I wanted to read this book because of some interesting fanarts and because the author had already shown me with her previous novel that she is capable of writing brilliant plot twists, complex characters, and interesting moral dilemmas. However... Case File Compendium is a bad book. Pretty bad. Quite terrible. Objectively horrible. It is so bad that it almost seems like a parody by the author.

To avoid confusion, in this review I will refer to Case File Compendium as BAB and his previous novel as 2ha (I haven't read Yuwu and I don't think I ever will).

ABOUT THE MAIN COUPLE

Do you know why I'm angry? I don't like couples with a big age and power gap, but the story begins as the two of them as adults with independent lives. They don't have a good relationship at first: the MC is in love with the ML's sister, but all his attempts to get close to her end up with tense scenes with the ML. AND IT WAS AWESOME.

Their relationship was a fun bickering with quite a bit of tension between them. Maybe the two of them don't like each other, but they help each other, they protect each other, they work together to solve some mysteries until... MISUNDERSTANDINGS. And the MC rapes the ML.

The relationship goes to shit.

The MC was an interesting character who now becomes a ML obsessed stalker. The relationship between the two of them no longer progresses from the previous slow burn, but instead gets stuck in the following timeloop:
-MC forces ML to be with him with physical violence/emotional blackmail/lies
-The ML tolerates the MC
-The MC is happy and that makes him nicer
-The ML tries to break his abusive relationship with coherent arguments
-The MC has a crisis because: "Why does the person I've abused want to leave me?"
-The MC hurts the ML
-The MC forces the ML to be with him, etc...

This happens... 20 times? FIFTY? I AM NOT EXAGGERATING. THERE IS NO EVOLUTION IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP. THEY ARE CAUGHT IN A TIME LOOP AND THE MC IS ALWAYS SURPRISED THAT THE ML TRIES TO BREAK OUT. ALWAYS. HIS 50TH REACTION IS AS DRAMATIC AS THE FIRST.

By some kind of miracle, they develop a more or less peaceful relationship and... MORE MISUNDERSTANDINGS. MORE RAPE.

They have a tolerance relationship again.

There is no love at any time, but obsession on the part of the MC and Stockholm syndrome for the ML.

Seriously, if you've read this book and think there's something romantic about it, you've got a problem.

The author on this occasion at least gives importance to the trauma of rape. However... If you are having a consensual relationship and you tell your partner not to take the condom off and not to ejaculate inside you and he does, it is rape. If you're in a consensual relationship and you tell your partner that once is enough and he keeps going, it's rape. But the story describes all these scenes to you as if they were normal.

BAB is a story in which rapes between lovers are forgiven (bad men to pretty girls are condemned), rapes between men are mocked, rape victims remain silent for fear of shame, and the ML loses intelligence every time the MC gets close and that's why they always end up in bed.

THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS

I don't have a problem with misunderstandings: even more, I love ridiculous misunderstandings that generate comedy! However, at BAB the misunderstandings are absurd and frustrating. The author uses this resource to make the protagonists suffer (as if their relationship weren't already toxic enough).

This is the summary of most misunderstandings:

XQC: I hate you because you have abused me. I don't want to see you ever again. I don't love you nor will I ever love you. Disappear from my life.
HY: ok
XQC: *meets with a friend, goes to the hospital to some tests, hides that he is suffering from a terminal illness so as not to harm his loved ones, makes bad decisions without logic for the sake of the plot*
HY: WHY DO YOU HATE ME SO MUCH!? YOU'RE BETRAYING ME! YOU MADE ME ANGRY SO I WILL HURT YOU!

And so over and over again. It happens so many times that it's boring and annoying! I'm not interested in the plot of the male leads anymore, don't add any more unnecessary drama to their already bad relationship!

The author has once again chosen an ML who, out of pride and stupidity, must always sacrifice himself, generating misunderstandings that will culminate in the MC hurting him (almost always sexually). At the beginning of the book, XQC was an interesting character, but the author's decisions make him a caricature without ambition or personality.

Do you think I exaggerate? I give you an example of the worst misunderstanding:

ALMOST A GOOD PLOT

One detail that I recognize about the author is her talent for spinning all the plots and leaving small clues at the beginning that later make sense. Although BAB hasn't really surprised me like 2ha, there are a few moments that have caught my interest, and in other circumstances I might have enjoyed how the subplots link up.

However... The luck of the protagonists is ridiculous. Do they run into a homeless man? Boom! He gives them revealing information for the plot! Do they stop at a bar? Boom! They overhear a random conversation which coincidentally gives them the following clues! Almost half of the discoveries of the protagonists is not due to their intelligence or ability but by luck. In the end, it is implausible and irritating, and it ruins the rest of the surprises.

SCIENCE FICTION: A LOT OF FICTION AND LITTLE SCIENCE

That the novel is science fiction does not mean that you can write any nonsense and be believable. I mean, you can write it, look at BAB! Too bad that some readers roll their eyes when reading so much nonsense without a scientific basis.

Let's not talk about the scientific part. It doesn't exist.

MACHISM AND HOMOPHOBIA

The author considered at the beginning of the book that it would be funny to describe her two protagonists as openly sexist and homophobic.

Spoiler alert: it's not fun.

I'll start with homophobia. It's been a nightmare reading that the two of them are straight men even though they've slept with each other several times. They are both homophobic and there are scenes where gay people are mocked or belittled. Is there development on that? No. For the narration it is a joke that not only was never funny, it is also repeated too much until it becomes irritating.

And by making fun of gays, the story omits that there are other identities. Not everything is straight or gay, there are also bisexual or asexual people. At one point, a gay secondary defines straight people as "normal." *roll my eyes*

Sexism has made me even angrier. That label is used to describe XQC, the male lead. Machism makes him overprotective of his sister, a rancid, old-fashioned gentleman with women... These are almost positive qualities! Perhaps the other characters point out to XQC that his mentality is outdated, but it seems very dangerous to me that the author has decided that one of her main characters is openly sexist (the narration uses the exact words on many occasions and it is one of its main characteristics ), but do not reflect it as something entirely negative. Hello!? SEXISM CURRENTLY KILLS! WHY DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ML AS A GOOD MACHIST WITHOUT GIVING HIM ANY EVOLUTION?

Ironically, BAB is as sexist a novel as 2ha. Female characters? Beautiful and dumb girls, seductive women who use their bodies to manipulate men, ugly women who hate pretty girls... 99% of female characters are stereotypes, idiots, and bad people. They are raped, murdered or used in the plot for the development of the male characters.

The 1% is an interesting character that the author killed because... she had done bad things and should be punished. Not like the protagonist...

FLAT CHARACTERS

There are no complex or deep characters in this book. Secondaries are irrelevant, except two. And the two protagonists become more irrelevant as the book progresses.

But the most annoying is He Yu, the protagonist. His personality is to be obsessed with ML. He is an empty character, who uses any excuse to justify his harmful attitude. And the most annoying? The narration also sympathizes with him, explaining to you why he is so miserable. No. HY is a rapist, abusive, and manipulative. I no longer care about him for more than a hundred chapters, stop justifying all his crimes! HY is a brat spoiled by the author and that's why he always wins. He's not even a villain as a protagonist. His arc of corruption is ridiculous, all of his evil is justified by mental illness.

Then there is XCQ, whose IQ drops to the protagonist's side. At the end of the book, he becomes an incoherent character for the sake of the romantic relationship. Another example of bad writing.

LAZY SURPRISES AND POORLY EXECUTED PLOT TWISTS

I'm one of the few danmei readers who finds the 2ha drama overrated. But at least it was a real drama: cruel, violent and terrible against the protagonists. BAB looks like a parody written by a different person.

This book abuses the resource in which the narrator tells you a shocking scene... Which turns out to be false!
Example of a bad writer: the narration tells you that this is the corpse of beloved character X... then the characters discover that character X is safe since it was a hoax and you as a reader you feel cheated.
Example of a good writer: the narration never tells you whose body it is, but it gives you the clues so that your brain assumes that it is the beloved character X. The surprise is real since you have never been lied.

There are several scenes similar to this example. And many moments in which the protagonists seem to be in mortal danger... but they are terribly boring scenes since as a reader you know that they will be saved. They never manage to escape death by cunning or intelligence, but by... indeed, you got it right: their miraculous luck once again.

BAB tries to be dramatic, but all the "pain" is forced by the author with cheap tricks. There is no sense of danger because the characters always regenerate their wounds or they will manage to escape. The death threat of one of the main characters is soporific. The "death" of another protagonist is not even a spoiler because it lasts two chapters in which you know that he will return intact.

Top 10 worst scenes written:

MISCHARACTERIZATION OF MENTAL ILLNESSES

I cringed when I read the description of the book. Mental illnesses are generally very poorly treated in fiction and authors love to indulge in morbid cliches. BAB is the story of a fictional mental illness. The approach is interesting, but the author forgets about the disease for a quarter of the book and then she changes the symptoms or the consequences of the disease as the plot's interests. Just as I feared, BAB uses a mental illness to justify the protagonist's violent attacks and rapes.

In general, this book has no idea about medicine. Neither do I. But I'm a pharmacist and I know how to identify a lot of inconsistencies of someone who has barely been documented. The worst example is the narration assuming that a doctor is an expert in general medicine, when they are specialists in one area. So yes, here psychiatrists are equivalent to a traumatologist depending on the circumstances.

Although the drugs and medicine part is bad, at least it is not as offensive as the treatment of mental illness. Close your eyes and imagine all the harmful clichés of mental illness. You will find them in this book. Here, all mental illnesses are the same (anxiety? depression? bipolar? No, they are all a single label and that makes you a weird person according to the protagonist) and the great deal of the protagonist at the beginning of the book is to hide that he has a mental illness because it alienates him from society... Which could have been an interesting topic if it had been developed correctly. There are currently many prejudices against mental illness (the existence of this book is one of them). But BAB misses that opportunity, since it prefers to use this resource to invent drama.

HY: Oh no! I have a mental illness that I must hide and that makes me suffer from horrible oppression!
Also HY: *a privileged brat with money to spare*
Me: I don't know, sounds fake...

Congratulations to Case File Compendium for being the worst read this year.

I have to start saying that this novel it's not for people that doesn't have a strong heart and mind. It has strong scenes with things that a lot of people doesn't like to read. You didn't like 2ha? BAB it's WORSE. While I was reading I saw a lot of people stoping in the beginning and the middle because it was too much for them. So don't waste your time if you think it's gonna make you uncomfortable.

I started reading this novel eight months ago when the first chapter was posted. I was just curious because 2ha it's my favorite book and I wanted to know what this novel it's gonna be about. My curiosity took me to 253 days reading 1 chapter most of the days. Because of this I'm writing this, I just have to say something of the experience (and It's hard because english it's not my first language).

I don't even know what to say because BAB it's a novel with so many things, so many feelings, so many depth. I didn't know I could cry so much reading something and I am a crybaby (I'm crying writing this).

Meatbun did such a amazing job with this novel. Some days I just wanted to sit and talk to her after finishing a chapter because I wanted to talk with someone that would understand all the things I was feeling for this characters. And some days... I would cry SO MUCH that my energy would left my body and that only thing that I wanted to do was sleep. Even in the days that I didn't cry just one chapter would stole my energy because of the heaviness. And I'm not a sensitive reader but it was a lot even for me.

The way that she built He Yu and Xie Qingcheng it's so beautiful. I feel for them like they really exist. I laughed, cried, got angry, swear, and loved with them. Complex is a too simple word for both of them. There's so much in this characters that I really don't know what to say. I already thought that the construction of character of Mo Ran was amazing but nothing could prepare me for them. They have a special place and my heart and I'm gonna miss them so much.

So this is just an outburst (desabafo is the right word in my language) to say: thank you, Meatbun. Thank you for giving me this months with them. Thank you for giving me this experience that will never happen in my life again. Thank you for being so strong in this months.
And thank you He Yu and Xie Qingcheng for all the things that you both taught me

“The power of the human heart cannot be seen, there may be many people who do not believe in such an imperceptible thing, but it really exists. She will become a mother, father, husband, wives, children, brothers, friends, comrades, lovers... it becomes ideals, perseverance, gratitude, longing...

It will turn into tears. It will become poetry.

It is the love that makes the living not forget and the dead immortal. It is the most solid armor that eternally protects every person.”

AAAAA THIS BOOK 😖🫶🫶

I loved the plot even if it was kinda cheesy at times, and I really loved the xie siblings. Probably cause it’s one of the first damnei I’ve read that’s had close sibling core and it’s so relatable and cute??

And as for the romance…..there’s so many quotes I wanna put but this one’s my favorite 🥹🥹

5/5 ☆

I don’t even know how to start this review, but I’ll think first I need to thank the author for not giving up on publishing this novel… it really was an amazing experience to follow
each update with every passing day and is something that will stay with me forever.

This story is definitely a different setting from the last two novels, here we have our modern world with a touch of sci-fi and fantasy and let me tell you, I didn’t know this combination could work until I read this novel haha. I’ve always loved the way Meatbun tells the story, the narrative is exquisite but not overly detailed, poetic sometimes but easy to understand and sympathize with. Meatbun is able to deliver a novel with a 1.3M+ word-count and you wouldn’t even notice the novel is that long because the way the story is being told flows just right.

If we talk about the main characters, Xie Qingcheng and He Yu are more complex in my POV from the other MCs in the novels. Not only because both of them have a mental illness that causes them to be different, but because their own personalities, thoughts and feelings are overall more difficult to understand and to fall in love with. Xie Qingcheng is someone who at first sight is cold and apathetic towards others, but in reality he cares about everyone… even if it means reaching a point of viewing himself as a thing that’s replaceable. In the other hand, He Yu’s emotions are clearer and easier to understand, but he gets easily drawn away by these emotions and throughout the novel you can see how these are often mistaken by a “simple teenage obsession” when in reality, he’s being truly sincere. Both characters have their obvious flaws… but throughout the novel you see them grow and reach a level of mutual understanding and love that is just so amazing… they don’t even need words to know that they’re each other’s love and life.

The side characters have their own beauty too, even the villains are so interesting to read… I truly have no complaints about them.

This novel could even take place as my favorite novel/book of the year and life hahaha!!! But everything good must come to an end…

If you somehow managed to read all the way down here, know that the angst is worth it and that the light at the end pf the tunnel does exist!! You’ll have a rollercoaster of a time reading this, but it’s all part of the experience!!

I have so many things I would like to say, but I think this is good enough!! Thank you Meatbun!! <3

5 stars (are not enough???) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wow. Just, wow.

If I let myself get carried away I fear this review might turn into a novel itself but... there's so much to consider and give its due recognition to! I'll try my best.

Let's start from the beginning.

If I look back on my status update when I was 20% through this novel I was having some mixed feelings. Some of the things I said there I still stand by, especially the bad. So, let's get it out of the way, shall we?

This novel has a few flaws, the main one being pacing. I feel this is generally a thorn in meatbun's side, and something I think she purposefully doesn't care enough to correct and, in that sense, I think it may be a valid choice because her novels are character-driven and emotions take precedence over plot. But, still, throughout this novel I feel too often the story goes in "pause" so we can see relationship development (good or bad) regardless of how tense or not the large-scale situation was at that time. Back in the beginning, I feel there's an absurd amount of chapters where it's just a game of cat and mouse between XQC and HY and nothing much seems to happen or advance plot-wise and it drags on to the point it gets almost boring. Later, we also have them engaging in a lenghty heart-to-heart while in a supposedly burning building and then in the middle of the war or back to when they were just having their "honeymoon" phase in Mandela. I understand these are pretty indulgences but, if you present the situation as dire or urgent I... expect characters to act in accordance.

My other "problem" with this novel, if we can call it that, is the unreliable narrator aspect. This is seen in 2 situations:

- Their fallout when HY comes back after 3 years.
When we, the reader, first read this arc we are misled to believe XQC honestly wants to get close to HY and doubts, and worries. He's appalled and heartbroken when HY takes advantage of him during the conference and, as it's presented to us, he's caught up in a turmoil of feelings that leave him feeling oddly vulnerable. When we see this arc from HY's pov we see his hatred, pent-up feelings, and madness. Only a couple of actions make us doubt of his real feelings namely "kidnapping" XQC but preparing a banquet for him, having a small breakdown when thinking he's leaving and chewing out Anthony for tormenting XQC (only he can do it, ok!! xD). But when this arc comes to an end we learn that, actually, both of them *knew* HY was on the good guys team. XQC was just playing along in the hopes he could vent (because he himself felt guilty) and HY... well, he took the opportunity to work out his messy feelings but he never thought to change sides out of spite. In light of this I think, fine, HY's pov is more or less in line with this reveal... but XQC's isn't. If he knew, then why us, as readers, are getting tricked along HY?

- The "BE" and subsequent reveal
Like many, I'm not at all fond of LOST-like endings. The "oh, it was all a scene from the afterlife, a dream, a book, a play, a concept being explained in class, whatever". Again, we're purposefully misled in the second to last chapter, only to see that it what we have read was actually HY's work all along. All in all, since everything described happened save for the end, I can't be too mad. In my opinion, this is a cheap literary device when the plot has been made impossibly intricate and a solution seems impossible, and so it's used as an easy exit. That's not the case here.

Actually, I quite like the last chapters. I think the explanation given for HY's work and how it's handled its actually very elegant and beautiful. Writing that book gave him purpose and the company he needed, it let him work through his feelings and relive his lost love. I think the main issues here are perhaps that, if we think about it... a lot of stuff we read about he really has no way to know, even if he talked to XX, the Wei's and others at the station or clinic. Because, supposedly, what we read up to that point is his own take on the story, the uncensored draft, without any input from XQC even. This is not meant to be overanalyzed, I guess, because if we do, I think we may come to the conclusion that all we've read may be unreliable simply because that's HY's take on it, not the objective recount of events.

Now, with that out of the way, onto the good, great, and fantastic!

Meatbun keeps surpassing my expectations on how much angst can be fit into 1 novel. There's layers and layers of misunderstandings, mixed with left-unsaid words, mixed with pathologic behaviour, mixed with spiteful 3rd parties interfering... really, happiness is but a fleeting feeling in this book. And when there's respite from the angst it's usually bittersweet because XQC and HY are not being honest with one another and have completely different expectations out of their association. Really, I don't think I can do justice to the uber *pain* this work packs. There's a lot, believe me.

A. WHOLE. LOT.

In that sense, this novel is a very hard read, and the roller-coaster of emotions might be too much for some. I know this work made my chest hurt, and made me cry and curse more times than I can count.

Meatbun is also quite an expert at writing the most deliciously dirty explicit scenes out there. If you know, you know. There usually a lot of pain associated with these too, and not the good kind. HY repeatedly abuses XQC in the beginning and you are honestly made to hate him, but she always holds him accountable in the end. His mental health being precarious is not used as a scapegoat and he has to continually make a conscious choice throughout the novel to be more receptive in how he behaves sexually with XQC. The undercurrent of sickness is never fully gone however, and he's shown to still often succumb to violent impulses in his bottomless want for XQC. The difference is, as they grow closer, XQC actually wants him to, and is silently soothed by feeling so deeply and wholly needed. This obsessive, relentless nigh-mad passion actually ignites emotions in him, and he begins to have a lot of his own firsts with HY. Of course, some of the best sex scenes happen with both of them willing and truly wanting the other.

And that brings us to the main aspect of this novel: love. I think meatbun does an amazing work in intertwining many views on it and what exactly each character has done for, and suffered because of, love (or a lack of). Her most romantic lines in this book are specially impactful not only because of everything we've seen XQC and HY go through themselves, but everyone around them too. It all leads to a conclusion that's overflowing with warmth and a very hard-earned feeling of soothing, transparent, unrestrained love. I really loved how in one of her last notes, when facing backlash, meatbun described her writing process and all the pain she inflicts to their characters as a sharp knife coming down on marble: the harder and deeper it cuts, the better you can define your piece and see the result. It's a simple enough thought, but it can perfectly describe HY and XQC's journey and how we, the reader, connect and sympathize with them.

A last thing I absolutely adore about this novel are all the little elements that come back many times in the story to depict powerful emotions of love: the small dragon toy, the veil, the hydrangeas, the worn-down teddy bear toy, the keats-shelley epithets, the small phrases like "It hurts. It hurts too much", the nickname "Little devil", the foods and drinks like the pearl milk tea and (although it's made me laugh) the "my heart will go on" song and the whole Jack sacrificing himself for Rose concept... and many more!

So, I'd recommend this for people that are familiar with meatbun's works and enjoy them. If not, beware of extreme angst, dark and twisted characters, non-con, many explicit sex scenes and gore. Of course this is still a romantic tale at heart, but it's certainly not for everyone. I actually feel like getting through this novel is no small feat at all, but I'm glad I managed to. I don't think I can re-read it anytime soon as it was a taxing experience emotionally but I'll carry these characters and story in my heart for a long, long time to come, no doubt 💖

él no te debe nada...

HE YU, TE AMO.
Ayyyyy, solo lean BAB. No se van a arrepentir. LA MEJOR NOVELA QUE HE LEÍDO EN EL AÑO Y SEGURO UNA DE LAS MEJORES QUE HE LEÍDO EN MI VIDA.

4.5 ⭐

Cada que escuche My Heart Will Go On me acordaré de este libro 🥲

I wanted to like this book so bad but do I like it? NO!!

I could handle mental issues and 10+ age gap but r*pe is a tricky topic where I can let it pass in some books depending on the characters and the situation but the r*pe scene in this book is too brutal. I dropped this 21% in.

This is not a romance, not even a dark romance. When I heard the r*pe word associated with the TW’s of this book, I expected it to be along the lines of 2ha. Spoiler alert, it wasn’t.

In 2ha, the past SA happened because of madness, mental deterioration, emotional obsession, and misplaced hate. All of those are “emotions”—granted not good emotions, but at least the characters feel something.

This book was so superficial in the emotional state of its characters that the repetitive SA lost its impact after a while. Which is not how such a horrible act should feel to the reader.

In a book, I need to have at least one character to like or root for his happiness. My choices here were a homophobic rap**t or a homophobic as*hole. No thanks!

i started reading this book out of curiosity and i'm SO glad i did. this is like the best book i've read to this day.

it's not an easy novel to read and there are a lot of heavy topics, but it's really worth it. the characters felt so real, and hexie's relationship is just *chef kiss*

i really have to thank meatbun for writing this masterpiece!!

up to chapter 117, i was enjoying this novel a lot!!! (it deals with a lot of dark themes too, so check the trigger/content warnings before getting into this novel)
The main characters are super interesting and the plot twists till this point didn't disappoint. Can't wait for the official translation to come out so i can continue reading this dark and captivating story

new year, new resolution: i'm gna start writing reviews. why? for absolutely no reason at all. it'll be short though.

i've been saving bing an ben for a really long time solely because i wanted to sit and enjoy this fr after really enjoyed 2ha and yuwu. beware, because this romance is so dark, and you know it's a GOOD dark romance when you know the couple will get together in the end and it will have a happy ending (thank you twitter for reassuring me of this), but at some points you just hate the male lead despite knowing he will be redeemed. you know everything will be revealed, and even when you know it's coming, it still hits hard. that's exactly how i felt about he yu, as spoiler less as i can write this.

having read all of meatbun's work, i can safely say i love her prose. she has a way of using such simple words, though repetition and whatever magic it is, to make the most normal kind of words make ME feel so much. yes i did cry when a lot of things happened and the tension just does not stop all the way until the end, and no matter in whose perspective the chapter's, the emotions of both sides are always palpable. from their yearning to their miscommunication and missed opportunities (esp xie qingcheng!! not telling ppl is more cruel than having them accompany you!!) i lived for the way they went from not liking each other at all (which is really different from meatbun's bother works) to where they are now ahhhhh........ and,, quiet endings 🤌🏻

also, a huge appreciation for the breaks in the story; the mini-theatres where characters from meatbun's other danmeis make an appearance always make me laugh, and the extras........ one was so angsty and the other was so....... ahahaha.

i might not have the best taste out there, but bab is 5/5☆

It was so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one.
