Last Seen Alive

Fans of Vera, Val McDermid and Elly Griffiths will love Last Seen Alive!

When Anna Matheson fails to collect her son from the babysitter after a works party, the police are swiftly called. Anna is a stickler for time and a good mother – she would never abandon her baby. Her disappearance is totally out of character and DI Isabel Blood and her team soon suspect foul play.

CCTV footage shows Anna was last seen at precisely 11.11pm, as she collected her coat to leave the party. But the cameras outside the venue have failed to pick up her exit from the car park – how could she have vanished in plain sight?

Rumour has it that Anna was set to make big changes in the workplace, and Isabel can’t help but think someone wanted her out of the way.

Everyone at the party is a suspect, and all the clues point to murder…

Last Seen Alive is another engrossing instalment in Jane Bettany's D.I. Isabel Blood series.

Lauren Talbot becomes worried when her best friend, single mother Anna Matheson, fails to show up to collect her five-month-old son Benedict, who Lauren's babysitting whilst Anna attends a work function. Police are called and D.I. Isabel Blood's CID team are soon brought in to investigate the disappearance of the normally reliable Anna. Against the backdrop of a Derbyshire heatwave, they question Anna's mother Christina and her colleagues at her workplace, Allwood's Confectionery. The shape of the investigation is affected by D.C. Lucas Killingworth's connection to the Allwood family. When Anna's body is discovered in nearby parkland by the ubiquitous early-morning dog walker, the case becomes a murder inquiry and pressure mounts for Blood and her team to identify a perpetrator.

Investigations uncover a complex web of relationships and connections between the victim and various witness-suspects, both in the present and in the past. Shocking revelations expose multiple potential motives for Anna's murder as the detectives' attention focuses in upon a particularly remorseless criminal.

This is a series I find especially enjoyable to read. The crimes are realistic, without ever becoming gory, and its setting in the fictionalised town of Bainbridge (which the author notes is inspired by Belper, where she grew up) well developed. While the mystery plot provides the backbone of the novel, the strong characterisations, particularly of D.I. Blood, her family and police colleagues, are what sets the series apart from other mysteries and police procedurals. Unlike many protagonists in the genre, Isabel presents a psychologically stable, dedicated and approachable persona. She has her personal and professional challenges, but on the whole balances the demands of her work reasonably well with other aspects of her life. Her team members, at various levels in the hierarchy are also three-dimensional and intriguing characters, and its rewarding to see each of their development over the course of the series so far.

One aspect of Jane Bettany's writing that I find particularly impressive is her attention to detail as far as police and forensic procedure and her adherence to "real life" restrictions on police behaviour. As in the first book, In Cold Blood, an officer with a personal link to the victim or one or more witnesses/suspects is required to withdraw to "desk duties". This is a fundamental requirement to avoid potential conflicts of interest and/or undermining a future prosecution, but seems to be ignored all too frequently in crime fiction. Similarly, Bettany is meticulous - without ever becoming overly detailed - in her depiction of crime scene procedures. You won't find Isabel Blood tottering into a crime scene in her uncovered high heels and ordering everyone about, as you might in other series!

While I'd happily endorse the series as a whole, I believe that Last Seen Alive would also be enjoyed as a standalone read. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy contemporary police procedural mysteries in a traditional "whodunnit" mould. Readers who enjoy Ann Cleeves, Jane Isaac and/or J.R. Ellis would find this right up their alley.

My thanks to the author, Jane Bettany, publisher HQ / HQ Digital and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title, which was released on April 15th 2022.

This solid police procedural was pacey, well-written, and unpredictable.

Although this book is Book 3 in Jane Bettany's DI Isabel Blood series, it is also a standalone read.

I listened to the audiobook read by Helen Keely, who did an outstanding job with the narration.

This was my first DI Isabel Blook book and I was instantly hooked.

This is a pleasant mystery/suspense novel, which is a word that I don't think I've ever used for a book in this genre before. The book follows the story line for a handful of police officers and the female DI in charge of them as they investigate the disappearance of a new mother at an office party.

At first there were so many different officers and detectives that I had no idea who was who and had to just hope none of them ended up being the villain because I would have missed crucial information. This is the third book in the series and you don't need to have read the first two at all, but perhaps I would have a better ability to remember which cop was which if I had.

DI Isabel Blood is a cool character, smart and capable but also dealing with real life like a grown son who's moved back home and not doing much to advance his life and a missing dog. I thought for sure the missing dog plot line would have something to do with the case but no, it's just a middle aged woman who gets really worried when the family dog gets out. Other characters are equally real, visiting their parents to find out about family history for the case, worrying about not being very good with people or babies, and so on. These little bits of humanity were interesting and did help the characters come to life for me once I figured out who most of them were.

The case itself was very... typical. This isn't one of those books where the bad guy was a long lost twin with Dissociative Identity Disorder posing as the mailman all the time. No, it's an actual realistic case. I guessed the twists and motives and such before they were revealed, but I still had a lot of fun time puzzling as I read.

I'd happily read more in this series and would even read them out of order since none of this book referenced things from other books in terms of other cases.

This is an easy, enjoyable, light read. It will be well suited for those who like procedurals and who like getting to know the characters. No depictions of graphic violence, sex or triggers. Cussing and references to violence are about it. Recommended.

I read a digital ARC of this book for review.

Detective Isobel Blood's team is a group of believable detectives...no superheroes...no "Kojak Wanna-Be's"...just hard-working people doing a sometimes, thankless job. Isabel herself is smart and capable, and fair, but also has issues in her personal life to deal with, like her adult son, Bailey. This is an intriguing, well-written, well-plotted story that is rich with secrets, and surprises. Overall an enjoyable read. If you are a fan of Ann Cleave's Vera series or her Shetland Island series, which I am...you will more than likely like Isabelle and her team.

3.25 stars. This seemed to move quite slowly for most of the book, before things began to fall into place. What was slightly annoying was the tendency to keep calling some characters by their full names over and over in close succession - like they’d decide they needed to interview James Derenby, so could Dan ring James Derenby to make an appointment to meet in James Derenby’s office? Unfortunately this wound me up so that the first half or so of the book felt a bit of a slog. Overall it was a decent mystery, but having read two DI Blood books now, I don’t think I’ll be pursuing any more, apologies to the author.

I received a free ARC copy of this via NetGalley and the publishers in return for an unbiased review. Apologies for the delay in providing this.

This is #3 in the DI Isabel Blood, but don't hesitate to pick it up as a stand-alone!
DI Isabel Blood and her team are called in when Anna Matheson disappears after a work party. The party seems innocuous enough, but as the police investigate it's anything but! . Anna, it seems, was making big changes company wide and ruffling many feathers within the organization..

Before long, everyone at the party is a suspect and Isabel has her work cut out for her!
A great, competent and clean mystery for all of you detectivers out there! . #HQdigital #NetGalleyReads #NetGalley

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

This opened really strongly with Lauren wondering why her friend Anna hasn't come to pick up the son she has been baby-sitting for her. It was a solid police procedural, with a good balance of focus on the case and the personal lives of the police officers. I haven't read the first two instalments in this series, but it read like a stand alone book. There was a point in which the focus on DNA evidence got a bit confusing, but I thought the solution was satisfactory and despite the odd loose end (who was Anna on the phone to when Fenella entered her office?) I would recommend this novel and would read others by this author.

Jane does it again with another gripping read.

I read this one in 24 hours and had me engrossed from page 1.

What I love about Jane's writing is that you never feel like you are reading a story but that you are there in the scene, there were so many on point references to the pandemic that it really did make it more realistic.

I had so many suspects floating around my mind, none of which were correct (to say I'm a cooper's daughter I really didn't inherit the detective gene 🤣)

I'm really hoping that there is a book 4 in the DI Blood series, I've read them from book 1 and have become really invested in them.

Not an easy book to review; having read previous in this series it's a solid, engaging continuation with the return of several characters and a strong plot. It's not the best book I've ever read, there's nothing spectacular about it but I didn't expect there to be...

When Anna fails to get her son from the babysitter after a work party. This is not typical of Anna to disappear.
Cameras outside could not pickup her exit from the car park. What happened to Anna? This is was a good suspenseful , good and quick book.

D.I. Isabel Blood is keen to get started when she is notified that Anna Matheson has been reported missing. She knows that in a missing persons case, every minute counts and may make all the difference in finding the victim alive.

So the dynamics of the team were better in this one than they were in the second installment and probably better than the first one too. That said, the team is a lot broader in this one with the inclusion of some outliers including that of PC Will Rowe, whom I really liked. Especially the hints of romance between Will and DC Zoe Piper. The crime itself was fairly straightforwards with a few mysteries about There's the added twist of the family being investigated being related to DC Lucas Killingworth and the inclusion of some of his background being explored. I enjoyed the investigation into Anna's life and the revelations of the secrets at the company she worked, Allwood Confectionary and I generally enjoyed the book.

However, I did have a few issues. The first was the massive time skip between the second and third. The first and second books picked up one after another, whereas this time it seems like a whole year has passed. This would normally be fine, but I felt cheated from knowing more of Isabel's family dynamics adjusting to the reveal of her family secrets. In addition to that her son is back and has been living there a whole year and I just didn't like it. The storyline with the dog was fine, but blaming the son was pretty rough though, it's not like he did it on purpose. I also didn't really love the back and forth about him deciding what to do with his life.

The main issue was that the first two books used Isabel's personal life to carry them and without it, this was just another detective story with relatively interchangeable characters. So it wasn't bad, just not as colourful as the first two. A decent installment to the series. 3 stars.

Last Seen Alive is the 3rd instalment in Jane Bettany's DI Isabel Blood of Bainbridge CID series set in Derbyshire. In this novel which works as a standalone, 58-year-old Isabel is investigating when a woman, Anna Matheson doesn't arrive to pick up her son, five-month-old Benedict from her babysitter and very close friend, Lauren Talbot's house. Lauren phones the police at 1 am and they despatch PC Will Rowe to see if Anna has gone AWOL, or is missing. Anna, a marketing manager, had been at a works party and was last seen just after 11 o'clock and unlawful occurrence is suspected.

Isabel is smart and capable and also has issues in her personal life to deal with, including her grown-up son, Bailey. An intriguing, well-plotted and rich with secrets, enjoyable read which has tempted me to pick up a copy of the series début.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from HQ Digital via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

When Anna doesn't return to pick up her baby son after a works dinner her friend soon gets in touch with the police. Anna is very reliable, punctual & would never abandon her baby. Anna worked for a local confectionary firm. She had hinted that there were going to be big changes afoot. She had been seen at the factory on CC TV as the party came to an end but had never been seen to leave. Searching revealed nothing. When DCI Isabel Blood & her team investigate they find that opinion on Anna is divided the more they look into her life the more of a mystery she becomes.

Although this is the third in the series I found I got into it with no difficulty. It was a good read that kept me guessing. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Another riveting instalment of the DI Isabel Blood series with the disappearance of a young single mother after a works party; there is a locked room vibe to this story that has numerous suspects, a few unexpected twists and a detailed police investigation. Set in Derbyshire with an authentic setting and believable cast of characters, this is an immersive reading experience. The characters are relatably flawed with secrets. I enjoyed working out the connections between characters and their pasts.

The investigation unfolds realistically, with false leads and partial stories before the final unexpected conclusion.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

Took this book to read during my 2 week holiday. Just couldn't put it down but also didn't want it to end
Well written, easy to read, but a riveting plot. Not just about the characters of the police and investigation team but all of those involved in the goings on in and around Bainbridge. An excellent mystery and plot which kept me trying to work out who the perpetrator was right to the end. After reading this, the third book in the series regarding DI Isabel Blood and her investigations, I can't wait for her next adventures. It just gets better and better. Jane Bettany is a fantastic author who has me gripped. Simply superb.

This is book 3 in the DI Isabel Blood series and I couldn’t wait to read it. This can be read as a stand-alone as there is a really good balance of having a fresh new story and mystery to solve and the development of the main character and her life, which in my opinion always adds to a series.

The story was well-paced and gripping and I read it in a couple of days as I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next. I would have read it in one sitting if I had the time! I was kept guessing throughout and i felt the story was well researched.

Highly recommend yet another brilliant book by Jane Bettany which I read too quickly and now I want the next one!

The 3rd book read by Jane Bettany and it didn't fail my expectations. I loved trying to solve the murder , before the end. I think I managed to guess who it could be but wasn't sure untill the final chapter. I really had to concentrate on all the people's names in the story as there was so many , but I do like it based around Derbyshire mentioning the villages around the area . Looking forward to the next book.

DI Isabel Blood #3. Some parts of the writing grated quite quickly. The style almost seemed as though it was taken from a textbook on psychology. Then there was the use of the term "misper" by various police, which is a bit dismissive when they know the person's name.
The reference to people sometimes seemed "off" - DI Blood, or Isabel, but then "the DI"?
I decided there were too many annoyances, so DNF, and no rating.

Really good police procedural. I did not know this was the third book in a series, and it can be read as a stand-alone book. I liked the way the crime portion of the novel was balanced with the personal life of DI Blood. Has a lot of twists and turns, just what you want in a detective novel. You will not be able to guess ‘whodunit’ with this one.

Audiobook review- ⭐️⭐️

I just found the main storyline around genetics so confusing. Also the narration got more annoying with the narrator trying to end every chapter on a cliffhanger. Sadly not as good as the previous 2 books in the series. However I wonder if reading the book would give a different outcome

Very much enjoying this author’s two series. This is #3 in the DI Isabel Blood series. Not quite a cozy, but not gory either. Likeable characters, good plotting, and enough twists to keep it interesting.

Good read. Not easy to know who the murderer was nor to figure out the reason.
