One feisty aunt with talking animals, a surprisingly supernatural lakeside town, and a boatload of magic are all it takes to shake up my midlife.
No one should live day to day just to exist. It only took an invite from a person I’ve never met to a place I didn’t know existed to tempt me to walk…no, run away from everything I knew. How sad is it when I’m the last one to see that my crappy life needs a do-over?
Starting over in my midlife wasn’t exactly the plan. But with the discovery that I actually have an aunt I never knew existed, magic is real, humans can turn into animals, and there might even be a real freaking dragon living in Guardian Lake—I can’t help but hope there has to be a better life waiting for me to choose it.
I’m going to make the rest of my forties fabulous by any means necessary. From here on out, I’m carving my own path in life, choosing my own adventures, and creating my own happy ending.
Once I get the hang of my Charmed Midlife, I intend to never look back!
Spell Shocked is a slow-burn romantic paranormal women’s fiction with a woman who’s rediscovering her sass and learning how to kick a little ass.
A new series in the PWF world. Zara is in a controlling marriage and with a friend's help is whisked away by a newfound relative to a small town where magic rules. There, Zara finds herself fighting to overcome the years of verbal abuse she took from her husband and searching for who she is deep inside. Zara handles the idea of magic and all that goes with it with aplomb as she makes new friends and learns more about herself and her family's background. A unique twist in the book makes it stand out from many of the others in this genre. A fun read and I'm looking forward to more in the series.
Jenna Rivers introduces a whole new side of her magical writing in Spell Shocked. Stepping away from her shifters, she introduces us to her new characters Zara and Tilda.
This is a slow developing story, but the slow burn is worth the fire in the end. Zara is just finding her witchiness in mid-life along with the fact that she actually has a family, Tilda. Having never known anything other than her dreadful husband, Richard, er Dick, you watch Zara, teeter and tumble like a toddler finding their feet for the first time. But like that toddler, she gets back up after each stumble a bit more successful with each attempt.
The characters are fun and the energy of the story picks up as you get into it. As it typical with a Jenna Rivers story there at real life circumstances characters deal with, not just the fantastical. It is a good read. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Wow! What a great book! Started a bit slow and sad but warmed up quickly with the author creating a whole new life and world. devoured the book in one day!

I've enjoyed the book. It was an unexpected pleasure. However, I'm not a big fan of zara. Wimpy character. Good job by the author of creating an abuse victim. While the character clearly reads like someone who was vulnerable for abuse from childhood, as a middle aged woman, unfortunately, she continues to come across as a victim instead of a survivor. I'm curious about the next install in the series despite not being a big fan of the main character.
Enjoyed every word. Superb storyline that draws you into Zara's life immediately. Twists and turns that make you grab on tightly to the ride. Character growth gives one hope for anyone that has been subjected to controlling behavior. This is a must read. Very Highly Recommended.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable story of finding the family an orphan has always longed for along with a group of true friends. Zee not only uncovering her magic with the help of her newfound aunt but also finding her own inner strength and discovering herself was truly incredible. Look forward to more!
Dragon...still a mystery. Love this new entry into the PWF genre. Hints of romance, but at this point it is all about standing up for yourself and pushing back at those who hold you up.
What an absolutely beautiful story of rebuilding your life and overcoming obstacles. The world building is absolutely stunning, the mystery has me curious about what happens next and the characters are so well done that I can't wait to see what happens next.
This was my first book by this author and I loved it. A truly well written book with a plot that keeps you reading even when you have other things to do. I can't wait for the next book in this series and I'm starting her other series ASAP.
I almost put this book down because of how it started. I was sick emotionally. But I knew to keep on because if a book so quickly captures your emotions, it’s gonna be GREAT! Absolutely a must read series! Not sure if I the next one will come out soon enough!
Zara has had it rough. Her husband is a ass. Jump into the book and you will find out how becoming middle age and a witch goes hand in hand. First read of Jenna Rivers and really enjoyed her book. Can't wait for the second one in August.
A charmed Midlife Book 1, by Jenna Rivers. Loved reading this book. It was fun and will keep you up reading till your finished. Looking for the next book on the series
I loved that Zara is coming to her own life. I hate that she has been so damaged by her marriage. I want to keep reading to see her come into her true personality and able to make her own life chouces.
Dang! Tough read in the opening with a good understanding of domestic abuse and coercive control. It was cleverly done and I was so happily surprised at how the story developed (albeit slowly) into a cosy as in comfortable midlife magical mystery.
Zara's life is a mess. She suffers from black outs and has a husband who treats her horribly. Then a mysterious woman shows up promising her a better life. Zara soon discovers the paranormals are real! Join Zara on this exciting adventure! You will not be disappointed!
Oh bear shifters witches vampires maybe a dragon second chance starting over story with strong characters of both sexes some plot twist mystery and great battle book has it all and more
Love the whole concept of a charmed midlife - we need more books about kickass older women!! The lead takes a chance and finds a whole new life ahead of her as well as a great community. I look forward to many more in this series.
This book was so much fun! An unknown relative, an escape to a wonderful new life, and so much magic. I couldn't put it down and it ended way too soon.
This was not great literature, but it was fun. I enjoyed the characters and the plot was sustainable. If you like magic stories, i do think you will enjoy this one.
The story moved quickly and kept you interested. I enjoy books about the supernatural world and this is fun for any woman that has had a mid life crisis.
I was left thinking what I would do in a situation similar to what has happened to the main character in the book. She has been able to grow and hope this continues in further books.
