In Karen Kilpatrick's latest Nobody Likes book, we meet an adorable little chick who is trying to both explain and prove to a group of children why as he says, nobody likes the Easter Bunny. Each time he lists a reason, one of the children come up with a reason as to the contrary. As we continue reading, the chick continues to try and hint to and/or prove that chicks are actually better than bunnies with his many fascinating, yet conceivable examples. We begin to understand that the chick may be feeling both a little left out in general and possibly overshadowed by the Easter Bunny. It was delightful to read all of the creative responses that the children seem to so easily come up with in response.
I read this book with my six-year-old granddaughter, Sera, and my four-year-old grandson, Cyrus. Both of the children were fascinated by the adorable and charming illustrations, as was I. I actually think that the illustrations could almost tell the story by themselves.
We took our time on each page, really engaging with each illustration unhurriedly, so that we could talk about them and gather all that we could from each one. We then added what we got from the pictures to what we'd learned from the wording on the pages, so that we felt that we really had a good grasp on what both Karen and German were trying to portray. On that note, I truly feel that the author and illustrator work extremely well together and complement each other's styles so perfectly.
The story touched upon quite a few topics that were perfect for opening up a discussion with the children. Many of these topics can often be tough to bring up and explore and/or teach. While extremely entertaining, the book is also very educational. I think that children will thoroughly enjoy this story and perhaps not even realize how much they are learning from it. The story brought up feeling left out, fitting in, wanting to be acknowledged, as well as needing to feel interesting and important. It so creatively turns the negatives into positives, shows you the importance of keeping an open mind, and of course, realizing that everyone has their own opinions and that it is alright to have a different outlook than our friends on certain subjects. Having a different opinion, doesn't necessarily mean that one of those opinions are right, and the other is wrong.
Nobody Likes the Easter Bunny is a charming, and easy to read story, that is as equally entertaining as it is educational. The grandchildren and I really loved how the last two pages were filled with interesting facts about chicks and bunnies, many that we hadn't already known. You'll want to grab a copy for yourselves, so that you and your young ones can see just how silly the reasons are that the chick comes up with and whether or not he changes his beliefs after the children have given their rebuttal.
My granddaughter, Sera absolutely adored this story. She really liked how the children made it a point to help the chick feel special and included each time they countered his reasonings. We took a bit of time to discuss how someone feels when they are left out, and what a huge difference it can make when someone takes the time to include you and/or recognize that you are a unique and important part of their group.
My grandson, Cyrus really enjoyed the book as well. He really liked the very cute and humorous illustration/wordings. He especially liked it when the chick received his own Easter basket, because he was so intuned with the little chick's feelings throughout the entire story. He was glad to see that the chick was not left out. His favorite part of the story were the last two pages of chick and bunny facts. He was greatly surprised and excited to learn that "the chick is among the closest living relatives to the T-Rex," as his current favorite things are anything and everything dinosaur.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well the story kept my two grandchildren engages and entertained throughout the entire book. This is, needless to say, a very big feat in itself. I enjoyed this story so entirely much and definitely recommend it to anyone with young kids, especially if you are wanting to bring up Easter and its traditions and/or hoping to help educate your young ones on the topics I've mentioned above and more.
My grandkids are now super excited for Easter to get here, and they can't bear the thought of having to wait on their baskets and the egg hunts. I have already decided that a copy of this wonderful story will be going into a few of the baskets of my other grandchildren, as well as some of the neighborhood children this Easter.
I purchased my copy of the book on Amazon and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts are my own, well, and those of my grandkids. I would like to thank the author and publisher for providing a copy of the book to be given away to one of my followers.
I absolutely love the Nobody likes series! The graphic are so cute. Both my son and daughter enjoying ready this and laughing at the graphics. I wasn’t sure if they were team chicks or team Easter bunny! But they decided they love both.
Highly recommend and would make a great Easter basket gift!
My 4 year old grandson enjoyed this one. The illustrations are humorous and colorful and the text is a hoot. The story deals indirectly with a chick who is perhaps a bit jealous of all the attention the Easter Bunny gets and teaches a light hearted lesson.
This is the cutest little book, my kids really enjoy this one! I have 4 kids from ages 4-9 and they all love to read this book. It’s perfect for every age group!
