Works, such as the novels The Stranger (1942) and The Plague (1947), of Algerian-born French writer and philosopher Albert Camus concern the absurdity of the human condition; he won the Nobel Prize of 1957 for literature.

Origin and his experiences of this representative of non-metropolitan literature in the 1930s dominated influences in his thought and work.

He also adapted plays of Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Lope de Vega, Dino Buzzati, and Requiem for a Nun of William Faulkner. One may trace his enjoyment of the theater back to his membership in l'Equipe, an Algerian group, whose "collective creation" Révolte dans les Asturies (1934) was banned for political reasons.

Of semi-proletarian parents, early attached to intellectual circles of strongly revolutionary tendencies, with a deep interest, he came at the age of 25 years in 1938; only chance prevented him from pursuing a university career in that field. The man and the times met: Camus joined the resistance movement during the occupation and after the liberation served as a columnist for the newspaper Combat.

The essay Le Mythe de Sisyphe (The Myth of Sisyphus), 1942, expounds notion of acceptance of the absurd of Camus with "the total absence of hope, which has nothing to do with despair, a continual refusal, which must not be confused with renouncement - and a conscious dissatisfaction."
Meursault, central character of L'Étranger (The Stranger), 1942, illustrates much of this essay: man as the nauseated victim of the absurd orthodoxy of habit, later - when the young killer faces execution - tempted by despair, hope, and salvation.

Besides his fiction and essays, Camus very actively produced plays in the theater (e.g., Caligula, 1944).

The time demanded his response, chiefly in his activities, but in 1947, Camus retired from political journalism.

Doctor Rieux of La Peste (The Plague), 1947, who tirelessly attends the plague-stricken citizens of Oran, enacts the revolt against a world of the absurd and of injustice, and confirms words: "We refuse to despair of mankind. Without having the unreasonable ambition to save men, we still want to serve them."

People also well know La Chute (The Fall), work of Camus in 1956.

Camus authored L'Exil et le royaume (Exile and the Kingdom) in 1957. His austere search for moral order found its aesthetic correlative in the classicism of his art. He styled of great purity, intense concentration, and rationality.

Camus died at the age of 46 years in a car accident near Sens in le Grand Fossard in the small town of Villeblevin.

L'Étranger is a short novel about a stranger who is condemned to a death sentence not because he is a murderer (which he is) but because he angered the public opinion due to 1) Being an outsider; 2)He displays no visible emotions on his facial expressions and 3) He did not cry at his mother's funeral. The absurdity of the arguments in his trial is so beleivable this book makes a major point in discussing the random arbitrarity of human judgement and fragility of a man's doom.

La Peste is a nearly apocalyptical tale about the dark sickness eliminationg one entire civilisation and how those 'survivors' will cope with it. It is considered the Masterpiece of the Author, nevertheless, after reading L'Étranger, Le Malentendu and L'État de Siège, I would be careful picking one work to represent the whole oeuvre, which is quite diverse, in my opinion.

The edition I bought also had L'État de Siège, which openly dialogues with La Peste since the is a character named the Pest which will try to destroy a reign. I recommend the read of both plays in sequence for better understanding of Camus' aesthetic.

I've read La peste twice in French and once in English. It's one of my favorite books. Albert Camus published it in 1947 just after World War II, and then won the Nobel Prize in 1957. Soon after it was published, many critics asserted that the peste was a metaphor for the Nazis, but Camus denied this. I think the story is more powerful when the peste is interpreted literally as a wildly contagious infectious disease. More importantly, the book shows Camus' complete about face as an icon for existentialism, evident in his novel L'etranger. In La peste, the characters work together to support each other and their community in the face of adversity, the complete opposite of the every-man-for-himself morality of the existentialists. The book has practical value when we think of the AIDS epidemic, and more recently, scares of H5N1 influenza epidemic threats.

5ª Parte: Desenlace.

The Plague is not just a story about an epidemic; it is a philosophical exploration of how humanity faces suffering. Camus reveals the striking repetition of history—regardless of the disaster, it is always the poor who suffer the most, while the rich often find ways to escape or minimize their losses. In the face of the plague, some submit to fate, while others choose to resist. Dr. Rieux remains committed to saving lives; even though he knows he cannot ultimately defeat death, he persists in his actions, defending human dignity through resistance. Father Paneloux, on the other hand, initially views the plague as divine punishment, but after witnessing the agonizing death of an innocent child, he falls into a crisis of faith. In the end, he dies alone, trapped in his own contradictions. Through these two figures, Camus highlights the opposition between science and faith, resistance and submission, and ultimately conveys his existentialist message: the world may be absurd, but human value lies in how we choose to face it. Even if fate cannot be changed, the act of resisting itself gives life meaning.

Beyond its literal narrative, The Plague is also rich in symbolism. The epidemic represents the spread of totalitarianism, much like how Nazism swept through Europe while people remained indifferent and complacent. It also embodies the absurdity of life and the inevitability of death—Camus reminds us that while the world may be devoid of inherent meaning, true dignity lies in refusing to surrender to fate. The plague’s impact on society further exposes human indifference and social injustice: the poor are always the first to suffer, while the majority remain passive observers, only returning to their normal lives once the crisis has passed. However, the plague never truly disappears; it merely lies dormant, waiting for the next opportunity to resurface. Just as wars, oppression, and disasters have recurred throughout history, humanity must remain vigilant and resist, rather than passively accept whatever fate brings.

Through The Plague, Camus poses a fundamental question: When faced with disaster, how should we choose to respond? His answer is clear—even in the face of despair, we must act, because it is through this resistance that human existence finds its meaning

La Peste

I had that vivid memory of an extraordinary story. A book i could not put down when I first read it as a teenager.
Even though i tend not to read any book again, i could not remember what the story was about, but i should have kept it to my memory.
It is true, we’ve had the unpleasant experience of Covid, and surely that made the book less attractive.
I have to admit though that everything we went through is there: the quarantine, people dying by hundreds a day, people dying alone, being buried alone with barely a ceremony, lack of vaccines, exhausted powerless health system… that was too close to home to be read

Camus's meticulous brushwork in the novel expresses the fear, sensibility, emotion, friend and ridicule of his contemporaries when facing the Holocaust. I think Camus habitually avoids the direct nature of French society and regards the Mediterranean cities in North Africa as the place where the plague occurred. At the same time, it shows some basic ideas of existential philosophy: the world is absurd, reality itself is unrecognizable, human existence lacks rationality, life is lonely, and life is meaningless.
