About the technology Application security is much more than a protective layer bolted onto your code. Real security requires coordinating practices, people, tools, technology, and processes throughout the life cycle of a software product. This book provides a reproducible, step-by-step road map to building a successful application security program.
About the book The Application Security Program Handbook delivers effective guidance on establishing and maturing a comprehensive software security plan. In it, you’ll master techniques for assessing your current application security, determining whether vendor tools are delivering what you need, and modeling risks and threats. As you go, you’ll learn both how to secure a software application end to end and also how to build a rock-solid process to keep it safe.

This book explains in a very simple manner the importance of security in every step of software development, in order to achieve the mythical "security by design". It emphazises that is vital to have a well constructed CD and CI process in order have the maximum level of automation in these kind of processes.
Moreover it focuses on all the roles involved, since the aim of security must be crucial for team leaders and all other actors involved in the process.
The part I think is very useful is the third where it is explained to apply theory to actual cases, dealing with legacy code and exploiting the power and flexibility of microservices.
I didn't gave a five stars rating because I'd like to have more explanations about how to conduct a code security review.
Overall I can say it has been a enjoyable reading.
Derek does a great job describing a complex topic in simpler terms. He describes the basic pieces of an application security program, its importance and benefits, the available tools. He also discusses topics such as DevSecOps and application security as a service, which I think make this book a good read for anyone interested in the area of appsec. The appsec area is missing more books like this.
This book starts off with an explanation of Application Security concepts and DevOps CI/CD concepts. It then explains how to build an effective Application Security program and how to provide metrics around such a program. It finally concludes with pointers on how to improve the program. Very well written and concise. Definitely recommended reading for Application Security practitioners of all levels!
A good introduction to application security. It is more interesting the approach to security than the tools. The book is about the approach to develop a good application security program
