When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Chair

Rate this book
Her story has (not) defined her.

From where she sat, her perspective of the world was both quite ordinary and rivetingly extraordinary—from a paralyzing car accident in her teens to traveling overseas on a journey of self-reflection to becoming a mom. Throughout everything she experienced, she fervently believed in following her given path.

She wanted to trust its trajectory. She wanted to be sure.

Her story is not about a chair.

Her story is about her strengths and how they rose out of her instinctive vulnerabilities.

Her story is about her struggles and how they became her victories.

Her story is about being willing to hold it all, for herself and the whole of her world.

Everyone has a chair. That thing you are bound to or unwillingly defines you. An element that makes you different from the rest. One that you have little choice in the matter.

What’s YOUR chair?

If you are disabled, you have got to read this!
Because it's a reminder that YOU'VE GOT THIS.

If you have a disabled person in your life, you have got to read this!
Because it shows how disability doesn't define them.

If you are going through a rough patch, you have got to read this!
Because it's a nudge to dust yourself off and try again.

If you are down and low, you have got to read this!
Because it's a reminder to appreciate life.

When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Chair is the memoir of a paraplegic with a spinal cord injury. The story of a girl who suddenly found herself living an existence she neither wanted nor chose and had to figure out how to do it.
It's raw. It's honest. And full of heart and soul.
Told with humility and grace and with a lovely touch of self deprecating humour, this book takes us through all the stages of dealing with a disability. From the resentment and despair alongside that dreaded 'Why me?!' question, to the entire range of emotions coming straight on the heels of that, this book has it all.

It is NOT A SOB STORY.
It is the epitome of motivation. The 'dust yourself off and try again because you've got this' - kind.

It is a testimony of courage and resilience, strength and acceptance. The raw and honest account of a life that's nothing short of inspiring.

'There is something beyond powerful about the manner in which life unfolds and displays itself for each of us. There is something even more powerful about actually accepting it and learning from the winding and uncertain path that you journey forth. Everyone has their own path, and maybe it dead-ends at a shiny, metal chair. Maybe it doesn't.'
...
Maybe that is 'just the beginning.'

What Ryan Rae Harbuck gives us here, is a deep and emotive timeless tale that pushes us to reflect and learn, make sense of our choices, feelings and life. Nudges us to see things in a different, brighter light and appreciate the life we have been given.
Find victories in struggles and remember how to really LIVE.

'Her story is not about a chair.
Her story is about her strengths and how they rose out of her instinctive vulnerabilities.
Her story is about her struggles and how they became her victories.
Her story is about being willing to hold it all, for herself and the whole of her world.'

It acts as a wake up call that makes you feel and react. Makes you feel and want to do something.

I can see so much of her in the disabled people I am around!
From the reluctance to ask for help to the profound hurt caused even by innocent child remarks; from the crippling self doubt at a mere look that seems a bit harsh, to the desperate need of being seen as equals.

'Be the real kind of cool for myself' will be the motto of my wheelchair-bound son from now on. Thanks to this book here.
Ryan Rae Harbuck, if you ever get to read this review, thank you for that.
Your book is a small stepping stone for all those who no longer know how to take true steps.

To all Bookdragons out there in need of motivation...
Read this memoir if you want to be reminded that life is worth living.

It may not be fair, but do not waste it, feeling sorry for yourself.
'Don't let yourself go there. This is life. This is your life.
Breathe - you've got this.'

Does a book cover ever grab your attention and scream “read me?” This book certainly compelled me to open it, and the writing kept me glued to reading like I was in a hypnotized trance. As a wheelchair user myself, reading Ryan’s story felt like a foray into a parallel life; everything was eerily similar yet the contrast in our stories provided the perfect lens to act as a window into Ryan’s life and a mirror into my own. Ryan is a masterful storyteller and perfectly weaves every detail in her novel into a beautiful tapestry of art (or Indian scarf for those who have read the novel). Every line strings you along, interweaving you with the narrative. Upon finishing, you are left with the satisfaction of how seamlessly every small detail fits together; allowing you to zoom out and see the beautiful tapestry Harbuck created.

There's even a magical moment when you discover how perfectly the title interweaves into the story... I won't elaborate, it's worth experiencing firsthand for yourself.

While I related to many of Ryan's life experiences, this book is for everyone. I highly recommend it to everyone.

The title of this book will catch your attention, while the rest of the book will capture your heart and mind. “When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Chair” has something for everyone, you’ll find yourself rooting for the author as they overcome every challenge they face. Wheelchair users (such as myself) will especially relate and see themselves and aspects of their lives in Harbuck’s writing. I eagerly await Harbuck’s future works!

My favorite passage from the book: “Reflections from every part of my life beamed toward me. I was ready to recognize that my life was just that, mine. Although it wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be, nor wanted it to be, it was still mine. Regret or not, it was now my job to make it something great, empowering, and worth everything. Every penny, every breath, and every second of every piece of it all.”

What an incredibly impactful memoir, written by @ryanraeharbuck. I want to thank her for sending me a copy of this self-published gem, and allowing me to learn about her story.

Ryan was in a devastating car crash when she was just 16 years old that left her paralyzed. This book details the life lessons she learned as she moved forward from that day, through her teenage and college years, and as she grew to be a wife and mom.

There are moments of despair and frustration, but there are more moments about finding joy, about acceptance, about living and learning and always moving forward. I think that overall theme is something anyone can carry over into their own life, and this was one powerful reminder!

The book almost reads as a collection of short stories. Each chapter almost stands alone as a little snippet of what she went through, or something she has learned. They bounce around in time a bit, and don’t necessarily add up to one linear story. Personally, I found the format very interesting and it had me turning the pages from the moment I started the book!

I can’t begin to imagine baring my soul for a memoir like Ryan has done here. I can’t pretend to know what it would feel like to put it all out there for anyone to read. But there are a few things glossed over in this book that I wanted to hear more about. Maybe that’s me being intrusive, but a few things left me curious and, to me, left the story feeling a bit incomplete. But hey, if your one complaint is that you were left wanting more, that’s not so bad, right?

Overall, I highly recommend this one— especially if you like reading memoirs!

A collection of heartbreaking and inspiring stories beautifully crafted and delivered in a package that you just can't bear to part with. I found myself feeling sorrow as I neared the end of the book, not because of the stories but because I knew it was almost over. A monumental tome chronicling the many facets and life experiences of a truly fascinating and inspiring human being. A must-buy!

“One thing that I know for certain about my life, and about life in general, is that when things are supposed to happen, they do. I have always been able to count on that….Those things that you do with your roadblocks, that’s what’s called LIVING.”
What a wonderful memoir about LIVING! Ryan’s vulnerability in sharing her story sets the bar higher for all of us to LIVE beyond our own chairs. Her words inspire us to love deeply, go beyond what we think is possible, to feel and to react. So grateful for her wise soul.

When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Chair by Ryan Rae Harbuck - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

This book was everything I needed and more. Ryan shares her story of adjusting to her life after a terrible accident as a teenager. This accident resulted in paralysis and her life-long need of a wheelchair. In the beginning Ryan struggled, like anyone would, to adjust and figure out how to physically navigate her broken body.

I work in the medical field, specially in peds and newborns, so I connected on that level from the get go. I was rooting for her teenage self the whole way! I learned some inside tips on how to be a better caregiver in that sense. Thank you for that.

The tuna stench was so symbolic because it represented rotting life vs rising above. Ryan was able to see growth in her self along the way, which was so rewarding as the reader.

I love how she points out and shares that things can cloud you from seeing a chance for growth. Being able to decipher what's serving you and what isn't, is very important in self discovery. Sometimes we need a "refresher course to living" and I am taking this with me for any dark days!

I think the biggest take away would be never to live out someone else's dream for you. While it is good to try something out with support and give it your all, only then would it be okay to verbalize your limits and stop. She shares how you need to be dedicated in your healing, mentally and physically. She dicovered what she wanted to live for and how she was going to weave in her own "normal". That's when I believe, the universe started to listen to her. From wonderful jobs, to swimming, to a husband falling instantly and perfectly into her life.

I cried many times at Ryan's strength. I will forever be in awe at mother nature and the universe for keeping you and your sweet boy safe during your first delivery! You are giving your little guys a perspective on life that we ALL need and search for as parents. And I only hope and pray that I find and teach my boys a fraction of what you're able to teach yours.

Thank you again for sharing your story! I will hope this one close to my heart forever! ♥️

This is a very well-written, introspective, and reflective memoir. Sixteen-year-old Ryan is the victim of a tragic auto accident which leaves her a paraplegic. She and five friends are on their way back from a high school dance when the accident occurs. Her boyfriend is killed, and she is in critical condition.

She takes the reader on an emotional and physical journey of healing and acceptance. From the critical time in the hospital following the accident, the restrictions imposed at rehab, the accessible basement apartment created for her in her childhood home, the college years, and the friendships forged and abandoned along the way, it is a heartfelt telling of navigating adolescence into adulthood.

There is an honest assessment of her childhood years in which the parents felt it best to stay together for their children’s sake. Unfortunately, that served to make a family of strangers leading separate lives. But there is so much more to come. She recaptures the joy and freedom in swimming and competes for a place on the U.S. Paralympic Team where she meets her true love.

That love leads to marriage and motherhood. This is an inspiring story of what is possible. Though it covers the challenges of disability navigating life in a wheelchair, it is truly the story of one woman’s ability to build a life with meaning and understanding of the frailties of others.

First of all, let me just say this – Ryan is an incredible human. I posted about losing my friend the other day and Ryan reached out with the sweetest message and offered to send me her book. I was a big fan of Ryan before this but now she's stuck with me for life. That gesture was not lost on me and I'll never forget it.

I purchased her book because I'm more than willing to pay creators for their work and man, was it worth it. Ryan is a talented writer and her story is nothing short of amazing.

I have been around writing my whole career and I'm convinced writing about yourself is hands-down, no question about it, the hardest. Ryan does it with such intelligence, grace, compassion, and self-reflection. Given her circumstances – the amount of loss she's faced on every end from her ability to walk to people she loved in the crash, and even the loss of what family "should" look like – she's preserved and created a beautiful life for herself AND her kids.

Her book hit me at the right time (it was just my late friend's birthday and the one-year anniversary of her death is coming up), but I'm convinced it would hit anyone at the right time.

We all have so much to learn from Ryan and if you're ready to pick up a memoir, I think this one should be at the top of your list.

Ryan, thanks for writing such a real, raw, and powerful book. And more importantly, thanks for living it.

Intriguing memoir

What an intriguing title in When I grow up I want TO BE A CHAIR by Ryan Rae Harbuck. I haven't read work from this author before, and I enjoyed this story. This author was on our podcast, The After Show with McKensie Stewart and Amy Shannon as part of our marketing palooza, and the author had two minutes to tell the world about her book, and it intrigued me so much I just had to read it. Of course, it's not about becoming a chair. The chair is a symbol, and how she grew from a car accident in her teenage years, and coming of age, and discovering herself, her true self. This book gives a lot of information about her life, and the path of her life, her own journey into transforming into what she wanted to be, her own being, guiding her own life and setting her own destiny. It is a very interesting and emotional read. When I grow up I want TO BE A CHAIR is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading more titles by this author. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

After a devastating that killed many friends and nearly ended her life at 16 years old, Ryan fought for her life and came home paralyzed. This book starts as a memoir and is a self-help guide for strength, courage, and hope. It is about how she faced the challenge of being paralyzed, mentally and physically. And how she worked to create an everyday life for herself that included teaching, swimming, marriage, and motherhood. Little by little, she pieced herself back together and became whole again.

I loved the author's spirit and how she could adapt and take in all of her challenges and accomplishments. This book showed her optimism and strength and was very moving. I loved how she wrote about the accident and recovery through the lens of a regular teen who just wanted to look fantastic and hang out with friends. The way she wrote removed any distance and created an immediate connection.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not influenced in anyway as to what to say.

After a devastating, nearly life ending accident leaves 16 year old Ryan fighting for her life, she returns home paralyzed and attempts to unpause the life she had to put on hold while recovering. Harbuck is a phenomenal storyteller, who carefully and masterfully guides the reader along her painful and triumphant journey as she overcomes life’s obstacles and transforms into the best version of herself. This book begins as a memoir but casually transcends into a self help guide of strength, courage, hope and an unbreakable resolve in the face of adversity. This book is a must read for those wishing to shuck off the limits imposed on us by fear, stigma and assumed limitations and grab hold of our destiny to determine the value of our own life. Highly recommend giving this one a chance. The audio narration is terrific as well.

It had to be good

The title won me immediately and so it was, with high expectations, that I began to read this memoir. I rarely read memoirs or autobiographies of non famous people. It's not because I'm not interested though. On the contrary, I believe every person is valuable and therefore every story is important and worth reading.

I liked the non lineal reveal of what led to the author's paraplegia. I liked her writing style which was conversational in tone, but also poetic. I liked her positivity and honesty.

I wasn't gripped all the way through, but there were moments of great emotion, drama, tension and suspension. There were also funny and happily thrilling moments. Harbuck did a great job of conveying her feelings. Her life is nothing like mine, and yet I felt connected to her and her story.

This memoir is moving, humourous, and truly inspiring. Seriously, inspirational. I'm so glad, I read it and I highly recommend it.

When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Chair is an inspiring narrative that transcends its focus on life with a disability. It’s a heartbreaking yet humorous exploration of what it means to live authentically, find purpose in unexpected places, and rise above life’s challenges. Her voice is as warm and inviting as it is insightful, laced with a humor that rivals its emotional depth.

For readers looking for a story that will make them laugh, cry, and perhaps reexamine their own perspectives on resilience and purpose, Ryan Rae Harbuck’s memoir is a must-read. It’s a book that gently holds you, just like the dependable strength of a chair, and leaves you with a renewed appreciation for the remarkable adaptability and endurance of the human spirit.

A GUIDE TO HOW TO LIVE LIFE FULLY

Is it possible to read the true story of a young woman who had a tragic accident at 16 leaving her a paraplegic and feel uplifted? ABSOLUTELY! Ryan Rae Harbuck could easily have sunk into her chair and just "existed" but this woman chose to live her life fully. She has gone places and accomplished things that would make many able-bodied folks envious. Her writing is honest, raw and engaging. I look forward to more from this ray of sunshine.

I would love to see this as required reading in high schools to help increase awareness. The world could stand to be a little more kind and empathetic.

Highly recommend this read!

Crosspost from a deleted account:

Ryan Rae Harbuck is a survivor, and her story is one of courage and triumph in the face of adversity.

I'm honored to know Ryan through Twitter, and had the pleasure of beta reading some of her fiction in the past. Her fluid, engaging way with words is such a talent, and it really shines in this memoir. At times humorous, often touching, and never dull, Ryan tells her story with a humility, grace and wit that immediately hooks the reader and takes them on an emotional journey through the pages.

Pick up this memoir. You won’t regret it.

A remarkably powerful and deeply emotional memoir. The way Ryan Rae Harbuck uses language is both evocative and plain spoken, lyrical and aggressive. Hats off to this courageous young woman for not only surviving a horrific accident but also for surviving the complexities of her family situation and growing into the fulfilled woman she clearly is today. This memoir is an exploration into the feelings behind the challenges she faced. It is sometimes difficult reading; it is gripping and unusual but it is also immensely inspiring.

This memoir was so eloquently written I couldn’t put it down! Ryan’s story is one of true resilience, strength, and beauty. I could feel her emotions, so raw and vulnerable in her writing. Her imagery is so vivid you’re placed directly into her observant, brilliant mind. I laughed with her, cried with her, cheered for her accomplishments, and felt her fears and her bravery. It was a love story (of spouse and self). A raw story. I related to her as a woman and grew through her experience as a human. I will forever be touched by this story. Thank you,

Inspiration, humor, and heart! Ryan Rae Harbuck's "When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Chair" embodies all of those qualities and more. Harbuck's deft writing transforms the story of a tragic event to a work that compels a reader to cheer for her and follow her journey from despair to love. The book is sensitive and uplifting, and readers feel they know the author as a friend. Writers: look at this book as a perfect example of where to start. There's so much talk about beginning a book in the right place. Ryan nails it:

She's 16, it's three months after the car accident that rendered her wheelchair bound for life, and she's about to sneak out of the hospital with another wheelchair-bound companion, who happens to be a cute boy. The sweetness of being a teenager, having a crush, and sneaking out, juxtaposed with the very devastating life challenges that only an adult should have to take on, really sets the tone for a great book.

Raw and inspiring

In a simple, yet eloquent, style, the author shares insights and personal experiences from a lifetime of adversity, sprinkled with hard-won triumphs. My son suffered a traumatic brain/spine injury this year, and reading this book gave me a lot of hope for his future. I know that he will give this world hell on wheels, just as this author has done. I highly recommend this book to those with a new disability or those who have a loved one with a disability, but it would be a great read for absolutely anyone.

A truly inspirational story

This story was very inspirational in the fact that no matter what obstacles come our way, we must never give up on ourselves or our dreams. Live life. Enjoy life. Don't sell yourself short and make excuses for why you can't do something due to physical pr mental afflictions. Figure it out. Ask for help. Show the world and mostly yourself just what you CAN do! Then do it!

I had the honor of meeting Ryan when I was in Craig hospital at 16 recovering from a spinal cord injury. She was introduced to me as someone who I could relate to and rely on during my path to recovery. I also had a blast being on a wheelchair basketball team with Ryan. I have always admired her smile and attitude. It's been a blessing being able to read this book.

What an amazing read! I love a memoir that shows a different perspective of life and this book did just that. It was raw and emotional at times, but also heart-warming and full of smiles. A real depiction of true life. I was immediately drawn in by the title and soon found myself unable to put the book down. An inspiring read that offers a raw perspective on life.
