Because one look is all it takes to trigger a werewolf's mate hunt.
And when a wolf is hunting, he doesn't stop until his mate either dies or becomes a wolf too.
Now I'm trapped in some guy's house, he's stuck in his wolf form, and there's no way out for either of us.
Life as I knew it is over, but my fight to survive is only beginning.

Hi, I’m Lola! I’m a book lover with a *slight* romance obsession. My books are all steamy romantic fantasy or paranormal romance, and there is always a happily ever after.

I’m still on the fence about rounding it up to 3 because there was a WHOLEEEE lot about this book I did not like, but then there was some good stuff.
The storyline had good potential, the characters, all aside from the female MC, had great personalities, even the side characters. (Female mc was a dud with a trash personality)
But it was just weird in general. I didn’t like how the cared mates / selecting mate process worked or how the overall mating process went. I also didn’t like the whole werewolf experience and how that whole shifting/shifted situation was. It was very unique, I’ve read allllloooootttt of shifter romance and have not read anything like that. However, it just wasn’t my jam.
In addition to this, there were multiple typos. A few times the male MCs characters name was Jessie instead of Jesse.
This is a pretty big series I think I saw there was like 7 books which would be amazing if I liked the way werewolves worked in them but I do not, so I won’t read the rest which is a bummer bc I did enjoy the side characters and those books are their romance stories 😭
No love or hate here. Quick read. Simple storyline. Kinda rushed in my opinion. The “chase” was a little weird to me due to so much of the book the MC was in wolf form only.
The whole werewolf concept works a bit different in this universe, as human and wolf function as their own entities. That's to an extent where the one not in control can't do anything but observe what's happening through the eyes of whoever's in charge; they can't communicate with their wolf/human or listen in to their thoughts. I'm unsure how much of a fan I am of that particular aspect.
Other than that it's a quick and easy read. Entertaining for sure, but didn't really get me to actually care about the characters. Spice is on the lower end of the scale. There is some towards the end, but it's nothing crazy.
i had to dnf it at 70%… i cannot STAND the FMC…. always is to complaining ab something so small and irrelevant for what reason?? i think this book is written like its 2014 and its on Wattpad. At the current place im at, shes complaining ab the MMC nicely moving her legs out of the way from the cold water in the bath… something about “principle” …. what principle??? also at 70%, there is no character development from the FMC, shes a raging bitch for no reason. doesn’t want to eat dinner with his friends all the while knowing her and him cannot be away from each other without shifting. so in turn , isolating him from his friends for well over 2 months… just bc she doesn’t want to eat dinner and “free food”. give me a break.
anyways, plot seemed slow and rushed at the same time. genuinely doesn’t feel cohesive at all. where i dnf’ed it, she still hates him and hes so fucking sweet to her that it just makes me angry. also, knowing they have to mate and have sex at one point (real soon being as though the book is nearly over), i just dont want to put myself through reading that. i just know the mating scene is going to be hot garbage.
this is only book 1/7…. i dont know if im gonna read the other ones….
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Usually I like books by Lola Glass because the hero isn’t an aggressive controlling jerk who manipulates the heroine while she puts up with his dangerous abusive behavior because, “he’s so hot.” This is exactly like that clichéd plot line except that “he’s so nerdy and hot” so it’s okay for him to be emotionally abusive because he’s sexually turned on by it and he gives her money. Ew. **Mild spoiler** As for it being “not his fault” he’s a kidnapping creep, all he has to do is stay away from unmarried women in his own community. Abstinence may not be fun, but it doesn’t turn you into a creepy pervert that justifies kidnapping people, placing a foreign conscious in them that steals control of their body, and then intimidating them into a sexual relationship with the threat of death coupled with injecting them with sex pheromones they don’t consent to. If they can’t say no, it’s rape. If there is no enthusiastic consent to the whole process from the beginning, it’s still rape and it’s also brainwashing. Learning to put up with having no control over your sexuality or body and eventually deciding to like the relationship anyway, doesn’t mean it wasn’t rape. Losing self control over when you wash, eat, or dress and feeling helpless for months leads to PTSD, not a happy silver lining where kidnapping and rape is okay because at least you have more food.
The author relies way too much on wish fulfillment. A real kidnapping victim isn’t suddenly overawed with gratitude by physical evidence a would be rapist puts tampons in a cabinet to be sure he can trap her for months. It’s proof he’s a pervert who plans. Yuck. He doesn’t have a relationship with her. The hygiene items aren’t even her brand, what if she has chemical sensitivities like so many people today who use only organic cotton? The boundary violations of every paragraph were worse than the ones before it.
No one has a plan to stop the kidnappings and no one addresses the real emotional trauma going on with the women. Brain scans show the nervous system does not differentiate between emotional and physical pain. Your brain can’t tell the difference between the loss of your emotional relationships and breaking your arm because the pain shows up in the same way. Ripping girls from their friends after they leave family to attend college because a wolf demands opportunities to rape people is awful. I left 2 stars because at least the main female lead has addressed the need to stop the kidnapping. I cannot recommend this book unlike many of the other series written by this author.
Is this the best werewolf shifter mate urban fantasy romance I ever read? Not the best, but I will count this as one of them. I can think of loads of other werwolf shifter stories that were much more steamier and cuter than this. And did I enjoy this? Hell yeah.
I was so frustrated with the main protagonist and heroine Teagan. I like that she is smart, can think for herself, and has her own goals. She’s sassy and sarcastic, and isn’t a complete whiny spoiled snob like some heroines in books are.
But she took so long to like Jesse, her werewolf mate and boyfriend. I just couldn’t with her. He deserves a girl way better that can return his affection and love because she pushed him away so many times.
BUT that was my attitude at first. It slowly changed over the course of the book.
I mean just look at this:
I forced myself to face the facts, to confront my emotions. I had feelings for Jesse. I liked him. Liked him, liked him, in a way I hadn't liked anyone before
And then there’s this: But the same kiss had woken me up to my feelings for him. It had forced me to realize that I couldn't be just friends with Jesse. We had too much chemistry, too much in common, too much fun. Yet at the same time, I didn't know if he had any real feelings for me. What if everything he’d done since we met was just because he didn't want to live his life alone?
And than this made me stop in my tracks.
Thinking back to my life, I remembered the simplicity of going to school, studying, working at the sandwich shop, and then repeating it all again. I'd only chatted with Ebony a little every day, and I had no other close friends other than my mom. That, compared to a life where I did everything with Jesse, had someone to verbally spar with all the time, and was constantly being fed coffee and other food... I swallowed roughly. Holy shit. My life as a werewolf—as a monster—was so damn much better than it had been when I was living back in my dorm room at college. How had I not realized that earlier? How had I not seen that? Even before Jesse turned human, Wolf Jesse was always there listening to me, conversing with me in his weird wolfy way. I'd been lonely living on campus, and over the past few months, I'd practically forgotten what that word meant. I was never alone anymore. And… I loved it. And if Jesse really became my mate, I would never have to be alone again. "Holy shit," I whispered.
And Teagan than evaluates her feelings even more. And if he only liked me because we were mates... well, I'd give him more reasons to fall for me. I knew I was pricklier than a damn cactus, and that I was far from the most loving, kind person on the planet, but I would try. Because I was pretty sure Jesse was worth it.
It took me a while to get over it, but I actually thought it worked out well. You see, this isn’t a bullshit romance where the guy gets the girl and they all live happily ever after.
Please, no one believes that because love isn’t perfect. It is messy, ugly, and all types of beautiful. This is what I learned from the story.
Did I like Teagan our main female mc? I sure did. I related to her a lot. She is bossy, demanding, and she has her head on straight. She still makes school her priority, and she has her own goals. She doesn’t let a cute boy cloud her mind, because that’s not what’s important to her. At the same time, she is allowed to be herself. We don’t need to be told that she is a badass, we are shown that she is. She is honest, strong, brave, and vulnerable.
I loved that she took the time to evaluate how she felt about Jesse. She didn’t rush head long or fall in love instantly with him. It took her almost most of the book to process and accept her feelings for him. Even than, she only just got used to it.
The werewolf lore and the world building were still in need of developing, but there was so much to like. The mating aspect to the werewolf packs, where they lived and how they functioned. Getting used to your wolf and it’s sense, how it worked and operated in a human body. All these tiny little things made the shifter aspect of the story unique.
All in all, I would admit I didn’t like the kidnapping part of the story, and Teagan was a little rash at times, but I still loved her. And I did enjoy this book. I would recommend this for those who enjoy a good in your feels story, or just simply a werewolf shifter urban fantasy romance.
I couldn't get through this read - there was something fundamentally off about the writing pace combined with a storyline that was disturbing, weak, and bafflingly irrational. By about a quarter of the way through I had to ask myself, "Is this ridiculous numpty with zero survival skills someone that I really want to read about?"
More seriously, exchange the "werewolves" aspect for "cult" and that's basically what this is. Kidnapping women to marry off to their members and indoctrinating them into their culture and beliefs while simultaneously administering mind-altering drugs (pheromones/venom)? Everyone smiling and acting nonchalant and welcoming to a young female kidnap victim who should, by all rights, be scared out of her gourd that she was bodily taken by a group of unknown men?
I'm no stranger to stories that involve kidnapping or abusive situations, but this one reads like some cloistered Mary Sue's daydream that she feverishly jotted down in a journal she hides behind her Nancy Drew collection so her mom won't find it.
Like someone failing to describe a flavor they've heard other people talk about but never actually tried, this book falls unceremoniously flat in all the areas that would be needed to pull off this storyline in any convincing manner. Meanwhile, the content that IS present is so bloated with inessential mundane goings on and internal dialog that I began to question my sanity as I hunted desperately for hidden meaning (where there clearly was none).
The author had the right idea and there was a lot of aspects of this book that I liked but god, I did not like the MC. This book gave off very distinct Wattpad vibes, like it was written by a teenager.
»When they brush up against you the way he's doing, they're marking you with their scent so others know that you belong to them.«

𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒏 𝜗𝜚˚⋆ Stubborn, intelligent and funny. I loved her and giggled a lot while reading her pov.
❥ 𝑱𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆 ࣪⋆✮ Hot but nerdy, we love an intelligent man. He was caring and possessive.
✥ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 To be honest I did not expect to like this book that much - but I did. It was funny, unique and very entertaining. The whole werewolf thing is done so much different than in other books and I enjoyed it. The worldbuilding is good and I‘m looking forward to read the next books in this series. Teagan and Jesse are cute together. The situation is new for Teagan but she adapts quickly and I liked her fierce and stubborn character. As a couple they are passionate and like a storm if emotions. The fact Teagan spent a lot of time with Jesse‘s wolf was funny and I liked how the author done that. This is one of these reads where you don‘t need to think a lot and just have a good time. Overall this was a fun and quick werewolf romance. In general I highly recommend the books by Lola Glass and I‘m glad I found her on KU.

4.5 stars. Teagan, the female human lead, is kidnapped from her sandwich shop job by what look like a group of football players when one starts making strange noises whilst she’s making their sandwiches. Jesse, the male lead, changes into a wolf and she’s given the basic rundown (as is the reader) of what to expect from here. But she’s still got school to attend and a life that she doesn’t plan to give up just because some werewolf decided she’s his mate…
This story is female lead POV, well written, and a clever take on werewolf conversion romance. I really enjoyed the banter between characters and the value of secondary character relationships. I enjoyed the character and relationship development throughout. The author first released this in Vella and the end of this story leads directly into the next one. I hope she keeps going with this series - I found it quite unique and amusing.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’m torn with how to rate this. There’s a lot going on in this book that’s never really explained or answered. For 324 pages (per Amazon), it read more like a novella. I can’t even say the pages were full of much, cause so much of it Jesse was in wolf form. The writing style was ok, the flow was ok- for the most part, but the “kidnapping” their mates wasn’t cool. That forced aspect really hurt the story, as it makes it very Stockholm feeling in the end. I really wanted more from this book, like world building to answer a lot of the questions left unanswered, & character development, to fill it in more. There were some confusing situations that disturbed me to the point I almost quit a time or two. I doubt I’ll continue with the series.
I should be embarrassed that I read this in one sitting that lasted less than 8 hours and yet I’m not. That being said, I’m clearly mentally unstable but this was a good book.
I figured this would be another meh kind of book but it wasn’t! I loved it! It’s slow burn and not insta. The characters are believable and the werewolf stuff is an interesting take. I will definitely keep reading.
Well, it’s official. The fated mates trope has become one of my favorites. I’ve probably read more than a dozen this month alone. This one was a fun quick read. The book was on the shorter side so I felt like we didn’t get much development in terms of romance. The male lead also spend half the book in wolf form which made it harder to really get a lot of traction when it came to the romance. But I still enjoyed this. It was low angst and the characters were really sweet and realistic. The explanation about the whole mating and shift was also really interesting. I can’t wait to see the rest of the pack find their mates!
Teagan is a student on a full scholarship and works part-time in a sandwich shop. One day at the end of her shift a bunch of pretty jocks come in and order huge sandwiches. While Teagan counts down for her shift to end, she suddenly comes eye to eye with the last customer and when he looks at her his eyes turn from green to red and snarling starts. Shocked, she flees through the back door but is hunted by the guys's friends while he is shifting to wolf. They kidnap her and tell her she is his mate and he will hunt her and she will eventually be bitten and become a werewolf herself. But Teagan is no pushover and all she wants is to graduate from university and live with her mom to give her a better life. She has no time for some jock on steroids with a pea for brain who thinks he can manhandle her into being his mate - but what will happen when she learns he is no jock, that he is a student himself whose field is computer science and while he is a werewolf with a very pretty face, he is also nice, intelligent and funny..?
Well, that was a whole new concept for werewolves and I'm still undecided if I liked it. All werewolves are male and when they find their mate, they at once transform into a wolf and hunt her, to eventually bite her. Then she transform immediately after the bite into a wolf while he turns back into his human male. Then the she-wolf tests her potential mate if he is worthy and when he is, she bites him and the 'climax' phase begins where they have sex for days (or weeks). But if she deems him unworthy, he is condemned to live the rest of his life alone while she can find a potential new mate and the hunt starts anew.
I fully understood Teagan's fury for taking away her choice because the thing is: when he bites her, there is a chance she dies when her wolf is weak during the transformation. Here, they meet and his friends kidnap her and during the hunt she lands in their little werewolf town. His wolf is very possessive and the battle of minds during a good first half of the book into third quarter is at some point a bit dragged. There comes the moment where I really liked Jesse. It is clear that he has no say over how this mate finding process works, he is a slave to his wolf. He and all his friends long for a mate but they also know that the way this works is not in their favor and they did things in advance to try to make it easier on their future mate, like saving money in advance or stocking their house with necessities she might need. It's not their fault it is the way it is and I started to have pity with him when Teagan refuse to even budge one bit. I didn't like it in the beginning when she was flirting with some guy on campus, asking for his number and trying to slink away later on to meet him on a date when she was already explained how difficult and possessive Jesse's wolf was. In fact, I have to say that I didn't like her at all. And in the end, with the kiss when she is offended by how he reacts, I was simply annoyed.
Since book 2 basically started at the end of this book, I will give Ford & Ebony's story a try but if I doesn't like it or goes similar to this book, then I will probably not read the other guys' stories even though I really liked them a lot in this book. I hope they don't get such an annoying b*** like Teagan.
I still have to point out that I really like the writing of Lola Glass and so whatever happens with this series, I will definitely try all her others and keep an eye out for what she will publish in the future. I can definitely recommend her latest series "Mated to the kings". The last book came out a few days ago and I will probably reread the first four books again before enjoying the last one.
MMC in wolf form for almost 50%. Fmc was really not on board of the whole situation which understandable but frustrating at times. Though I enjoyed how it all came together.
I really liked how FMC actually had a life and was like this will mess up my life and MMC did everything he could to support her so she could still keep working on her goals. I just loved that there was a big focus on this!! So rare! Also loved how she was like i don’t love typical alpha dudes but like nerds. It was cool seeing her discover this “not-football” player was actually a nerd.
It had a unique take to the whole werewolf/mate thing but after reading book 2, I actually like it more than I thought.
I'm devouring this entire series. Good intro to the series and the world, I like that it isn't just your standard shifter omegaverse. They are bound to the standard designation "rules", and the entire mating process isn't "I see you, I bite you, you're mine now".
Lola Glass's signature *something* is here. So readable, so bingeable, they are the movie popcorn of shifter omegaverse. You can't stop until you finish the whole bag (series).
i can't keep doing this. all i want in life is a good romance fated mates werewolf book and all i have is TRASH that is basically a wattpad book. i just don't get it. i have found sooo many alien romances to read, that aren't necessarily the best, but i can get through them and enjoy them! but i can't with werewolves, which i think is objectively more popular? but apparently not. idk. fml.
Normally don't have a problem with any protagonist, but God. This woman is too judgmental, she spent half of the book judging a man/wolf who was only giving the best for her.
This diva cracked me up. And her having a horny crash out because she found out he’s a virginal nerd is unfortunately so incredibly real. I too would’ve wanted to #jumpthat.
I don't know how I feel about this book. I found the take on werewolves to be interesting, definitely different than most versions of them. I just didn't know if I liked the characters by the end. I'll read the second in the series and see what I feel by the end of that.
SPOILIER ALERT!!!! Before writing this review, I would like add that as an author, I tend to read with a more critical eye. I don't like leaving poor reviews and try to balance the strengths of a story with the areas that I didn't like. This said, I'll dive in. I'm a huge werewolf fan so whenever I see a book about them I tend to read-on. This story deviated from the classic werewolf change by the moon theme, and was more of a shapeshifter novel, IMHO. I liked the werewolf community in the story and the mate for life theme as well. The book was a quick read, and entertained me for sure. Despite these strengths, there were areas in the plot that took me aback (so if you don't want spoilers stop reading now). For example, I felt the moment when Jesse imprinted on the MC could have been fleshed out more. All that happened was he locked gazes with her, said "Mate." and then his pack kidnapped her. Seemed a tad anticlimactic. I would like to have known more about how this process worked, why he chose the MC. Also the kidnapping scene didn't work for me. If I had been taken by a van full of men, I probably would have struggled with a panic attack, not breathed right. Tears would have streamed down my cheeks. I would have screamed until my throat burned. Especially if a man had morphed into a werewolf in front of me. In this book, the MC just sat there, showing no emotion. Then she escaped, staying completely calm, which bordered on being flat, and the wolf followed her. My heart would have pounded so hard, I would have stroked out. Instead, she just said things like, "shew, get away from me," as she tried to run to town. I was so disappointed with these scenes and felt they could have been so much richer if fleshed out more.
I'm a proponent of strong characters and in this book, I didn't feel the MC showed much strength. her choices were totally stolen from her. Yet, she didn't miss a beat and went along with everything Jesse wanted. Once in a while she'd say "Oh, I don't want to fall into Stockholm syndrome girl." This just didn't work for me. In a real world, I think a strong woman would have pushed back with everything she had. This book might have worked better if the MC would have been given more choices. For example, if Jessy would have approached her and explained who he was, and what she meant to him, then gave her a chance to maybe date, or something like that. Instead, I just felt like the MC was carried through the story, and forced into every choice. She never took control of her own destiny. Even in the end, the MC did what Jesse wanted and asked her mom to live in the town with his pack instead of following her own dreams. IDK, but this disappointed me and made the MC seem weak.
I gave this read a 3.8 star rating because while this book entertained me, I felt that the characters lacked depth and the pacing was a little slow sometimes, which was disappointing. I am going to read the sequel due to the entertaining aspects of the story, and if you like a shapeshifter novel, this might be for you.
It was fun, I guess. But I’d say ONLY if you like very specific shifter romance tropes. It was fun enough and I got through it in a day, but there were a few things I’d change about this book.
1) Teagan is too stubborn. I get it at first, truly. Basically kidnapped by men and told your a mate to a shifter and you’ll become one too without a choice. That’s rough. But after a while it’s just like girl shut up. ADAPT. she didn’t even TRY. She was constantly in denial and mad and wouldn’t even THINK about it.
2) we get in typical werewolf lore, they eat a LOT. which is fine….but my GOD in this book they were cramming food down their mouths every single page. And it wasn’t just some food, it was a ridiculous amount. And her stomach was always growling and 5 sandwiches and 5 gallons of milk and whatever else was never enough.
3) there were typos but the author originally wrote this on kindle Vella and it’s not like she was aiming for major publishing. So in my eyes, it’s fine. The typos weren’t that awful and I barely noticed some of them.
Anyway, I wouldn’t really recommend this book to anyone. Just one of those things you read yourself and liked it enough and that’s that.
I loved so much about this. Epically funny, unique story, great characters, good world building.
So now for the rough bits. Needed wayyy more world building. So many huge story gaps. The FMC initial reaction is not strong enough, even with things being on the lighter side. The other MC behaviour and initial treatment wasn’t likeable. Lastly, the end was seriously rushed.
Spoiler. She calls herself a monster. That’s never resolved. Simply, she wants Jessie, so it no longer matter? Secondly, she says she’s happier as a werewolf, only she’s never lived as one. All she knows is it’s excruciating to change, she hates the loss of control, the hunger and the violence. So how is being one better? She’s happier in a relationship, but that’s a side issue.
I loved so much of this, and could seriously let so much slide and still give it a 4⭐️, except for the end issues.
I’m giving it a slightly higher rating simply because I was enjoying it SO much until about the 80% onwards. Really hoping some of these issues will be improved upon in the next ones.
This was a cute fresh take on a werewolf mate book. It took out a lot of the toxic cringe-worthy stuff while still kind of keeping the feel that these kinds of paranormal romance books have. The characters were likeable and I loved wolf Jesse although I'm conflicted on how I feel about him being a wolf for about half the book.
Either way it was a fun fast read that does a great job of scratching that paranormal romance read itch without being weighed down by too many complicated things. Great for anyone who likes these kinds of books. It's all vibes and fun times. I think I'll for sure pick up the sequel when it comes out.
I liked the characters and banter. So why am I giving this 1 star?
*Climbs mountain of soap boxes and proceeds to shout* STOCKHOLM SYNDROME IS NOT REAL!
It is not a real thing. It is not a recognized thing. And this character allegedly went through a psych class? Sometimes she mentioned it multiple times a page and it got annoying fast. "Stockholm Syndrome" is literally something made up to discredit a woman. To say she doesn't know her own mind. It's very damaging and I am tired of seeing it thrown around.
Do your research and don't put harmful misinformation in your books. You are hurting women everywhere with your blythe ignorance.
The start to a PNR series focused on werewolves and their community in Moon River. There are no cliffhangers and the couple find their HFN / HEA, with I can only assume periodic updates as those of his pack find their mates.
** There are a couple of potential triggers for sensitive readers, such as adult language, semi-steamy intimate scenes, and some violence such as kidnapping and assault. **
— Although I try to watch it, if you haven’t read the story, the following may contain spoilers, but only so I can adequately explain my opinions. —
Overall, I enjoyed Teagan’s and Jesse’s story. Lola Glass presents a different take on the werewolf genre and keeps it to a lighter feel. The main characters are funny, snarky, and have good chemistry later in the story. I wish there were better descriptions of the characters and some of the settings. Such as what color are the bedrooms, kitchen, etc.? What about some of the features in the kitchen: are the countertops granite, the appliances stainless steel, is everything basic? After such a great view of what the townhouse looked like on the outside, I wanted more about the inside where so much of their time was spent.
There are several different twists than what I have read in previous werewolf PNRs. The premise is the first (explained at a high-level below), another is the males. They are apologetic, feel guilty and build nests for having ‘to take’ their females and change their lives. The other is their sexual experience level … surprisingly sweet. The violence that takes place in this story isn’t because it is a violent story, there aren’t any gangs, clubs, etc., fighting between packs, etc. It is all because of the nature of the animal involved (I.e. jealousy of any one touching, flirting, etc. of their mate).
As you can probably tell, I am fortunate that I visualize a story as I read it. So the more details the better, but other things can detract as well, such as grammatical errors. Fortunately, there aren’t very many of these. Mainly incorrect punctuation, with a couple incorrect capitalization in regards to honorifics, extra inserted words and/or typos. I uploaded my notes to goodreads for anyone interested.
The origin story is different for how werewolves and involves a witch and two separate beings sharing one body. When the wolf is in charge the human can see what is happening, but cannot communicate or control the animal that will act on instinct. Because of how werewolves evolved, only males are born, so when the wolf finds its mate, the reaction is immediate and that starts a 3 step ritual: Hunt, Chase and Climax. This is what necessitates the kidnapping of the human female, as the wolf will not shift back until his chosen mate is marked by his wolf.
In this story, Teagan, aka Tea and Teacup, is working towards her degree in nursing. She has a scholarship, but has a job in a sandwich shop. Right before closing a group of large college aged men come in for sandwiches. Everything is routine until she gets towards the end of the line. He makes a joke about his sandwich being veggie whereas everyone else ordered triple meat. Then his 👀 meet her’s, his turn red, he calls out mate and then starts having a seizure or something.
Tea isn’t sure exactly what is going on with him, but after trying to escape out the back and threatening to call the cops, she finds herself picked up and thrown over some non-football player’s shoulder as they take her out to a van. WTF?! Then veggie man is popping, cracking, howling, and growling from the back of the van where they put him. The guy driving the van is driving like a maniac and it is throwing Tea around despite wearing a seat belt. This causes veggie man, who is now half man … half animal … to growl even more every time she cries out.
More determined than ever to get away, Tea keeps unbuckling the seat belt that one of them keeps buckling back. He tells her that she doesn’t want to run right now, but yes she really does … “What are you guys?” she asks. They quickly tell her, “Werewolves.”
I won't give this a star rating, because I wasn't able to finish it. There are spoilers below, beware.
On the surface, the book is a great concept. It's a very unique look at werewolves, and that makes it interesting. The idea is when a male werewolf - they're all born male - comes across his mate, the wolf aspect of the shifter takes over and begins to "hunt" the female until she allows him to put his mating mark on her. I.e. he bites her. The thing is, during the hunt which can last for three months, he is stuck in wolf form. So this happens to our main characters. The main guy, Jesse, sees the main girl, Teagan, and immediately begins to shift. The hunt is on. What do his buddies do? They KIDNAP Teagan. So, we're off to a great start. Our FMC, a nursing student - that's important - is suddenly stuck in this stranger's house. She can't leave because he follows her everywhere. And, she's on a full scholarship - she's dirt poor - so she can't miss class. That's our premise. It's a comedy of errors, of sorts.
What follows, however, is not intriguing or interesting. It's confusing. The FMC spends the entire first part of the book trying to get away, because of course she would. And, it's okay for a time. But, the FMC has the all the personality of a bag of feral cats on crack and none of the redeeming values. She's NASTY. She has these ideas that she considers values, but are really carefully disguised aspects of pride and spite. She's the kind of girl that makes fun of a group of men for being virgins despite the fact she's done the deed once (all of this AFTER she decided they were promiscuous players because they were pretty).
She is one of the most stubborn and thoroughly unlikeable characters I've ever read about. But, the thing that really took the cake for me - the proverbial last straw occurred later on. She's finally gotten to the point that he's put his mark on her, she's a werewolf now, and she is VOLATILE. Still, she insists on going to school, putting herself in a position to be surrounded by unsuspecting humans, and a woman dares to touch the MMC. Well of course, the FMC loses it, and despite the MMC's attempt to get her away from the campus, she turns and bites the woman who touched her mate. Well, now, she's decided she's a monster - which is understandable really - and she can't be trusted.
Friends and neighbors, you've just turned into a wolf and BITTEN someone at your school. So, what do you do? Do you talk to someone about it? Do you seek out the council from someone else in the pack? Do you go back and do your homework because you're on a free ride scholarship? That's not what our FMC does. No, our FMC, the seemingly intelligent nursing student with the character of wet wool wrapped around carpet tacks who is being inhabited by an unhinged, volatile, somewhat rabid wolf decides the best course of action is to head to a bar.
This was the point at which I couldn't take any more. I can handle the prickly attitude, I can handle the Stockholm-esque story arc. However, I cannot handle characters being stupid. And, that is a theme that I see too much, these days. "Oh, I'm a danger to myself and others? That's terrible, I'm going to go get drunk and smother my inhibitions into nonexistence. What's the worst that could happen??" Ugh.
