A pitch-perfect new rural romance from the bestselling author of Once Burnt, Twice Shy.
When a drought dries up the contents of a water hole on her uncle's property, investigative journalist Phillipa Davenport is astonished at what she finds.
On a deadline and with a severe case of writers' block, Pip doesn't have time to investigate this story - she just wants to write her book. However, the universe and her neighbour seem to have other ideas. And then there's the mysterious detective assigned to the case, who Pip is beginning to find very distracting.
When the only person of interest is a ninety-eight-year-old war veteran, who's unable to communicate and who appears to have been found unjustly guilty in the court of public opinion, Pip feels drawn to the case despite the fact she simply doesn't have time to take it on. But how often does an old cold case murder land on your doorstep?
With more questions arising as each layer of the past is peeled back, Pip soon realises she's opened a can of worms, and secrets thought long-buried suddenly emerge bringing some hard truths for the little town to face.
Karly Lane lives on the beautiful Mid North Coast of NSW in Australia. A certified small town girl, she is most happy in a little town where everyone knows who your grand parents were. She writes women’s fiction – everything from romantic suspense to family sagas and life in rural Australia. She has romantic suspense titles published under Karlene Blakemore-Mowle and her latest release, Third Time Lucky is available now.
Investigative journalist, Phillipa Davenport, arrived in the small Victorian town of Midgiburra, preparing to house-sit her Uncle Nev's property, Roseglen, for the next three months while he was travelling. Pip had driven from Sydney, where the trauma of her recent past still hadn't left her. She knew she'd feel safe, tucked away and writing her book on the notorious criminal she had just helped put behind bars. The true crime novel was begging to be written but Pip's experience had left her with a bad case of writer's block. Could she finish the book in this small town of peace and quiet?
The drought in Midgiburra was severe and the dam at the bottom of Uncle Nev's property was showing a mess of trash which had been uncovered as the water became less. Pip decided to clean it up, calling in a local with a digger. But the uncovering of a rusty, ancient car, with skeletal bones inside, once again drew Pip into her investigative career. Who was the person in the wreck? And why were the locals so determined one old man was the murderer? He was a war veteran, a man to be proud of, but the town's people had turned him into a recluse - Pip was determined to find the truth...
A Stone's Throw Away by Aussie author Karly Lane is another great read from this author's pen. An investigative journalist, a war veteran, corrupt politicians, corrupt cops, and people who would kill to stop their secrets getting out - what a great mix! Rural, yes, romance, yes (but not too much) along with mystery and suspense, and great characters - a novel to recommend. Unfortunately, my copy - bought, so the final edition - had editing errors.
Four and a half stars When long running drought dries up the dam on her Uncle Nev’s property in rural Victoria while Phillipa Davenport is staying there to write a book, there is a huge shock in store. While clearing the rubbish accumulated in the dam, the workers Phillipa hiresfind a skull and a rusted old car. An investigative journalist Phillipa, known as Pip, is there to write an account of her near death experience at the hands of Lenny Knight and the corruption of several prominent politicians. But for the first time words won’t seem to come. She is intrigued by the mystery surrounding the dam and even more intrigued by the detective assigned to the case. However, she doesn’t have time for distractions. She has a book to write. But how often does a cold case murder land in a reporters lap? And why does everyone in the small town of Midgiburra, believe Bert Bigsby who people call Butcher, murdered his wife Molly even though he had an alibi at the time? Curiosity and a desire for justice gets the better of Pip. She goes to visit 98 year old Bert who is in a nursing home. And is even more convinced he is not guilty. But can she prove it? She resolves to try. The more she discovers, the more secrets are uncovered which upsets some people. So when Pip’s life is in danger who can she trust? This is a story of long held secrets, and the attitudes of a small community as well as a romance, or maybe two. It is also the story of a war veteran and the treatment he received after coming home. The setting is well developed and so are the characters. The rural landscape definitely plays an important part in this story. There is plenty going on in this story to keep the reader interested. A bit if profanity and bad language but overall a good, recommended read.
I do love a good rural romance and Karly Lane does them so very well add in suspense and this one is a page turner, I could barely put it down, I loved the setting, and the characters, this one is a must read.
Investigative journalist Pip Davenport is writing a book on her last investigation that saw her in danger but the culprit is in jail and it is time to get this book written, so she moves to her uncles quiet country home in Midgiburra, Victoria for three months, they have been in drought for years now and the dam is very low showing lots of metal thrown in there. Pip decides to get it cleaned out and hires Bob with his excavator but what they find will shock everyone and maybe Pip needs to investigate this story, a cold case from over seventy years ago, missing persons Molly Bigsby, her and her husband Herb owned the farm before her uncle, Herb is ninety eight and in the local nursing home after a stroke.
Pip cannot help herself and starts researching the Bigsby’s story, what she finds is a heartbreaking story of love and hurt and secrets kept by the town folk that happened during World War 2, this also brings her in contact with the local police officer and then a detective from the next town is called in as well. Pip is drawn to Detective Chris Jarret and she has no idea why but as they share facts about the case they get much closer, but then small things start happening and Pip is thrown back into her last investigation and she is in danger, but who can she trust?
This is a fast paced and fabulous story told so well by MS Lane she pulled me in and had me turning the pages, Pip is so strong and showed such strength with everything she had been through and the secrets she uncovers has the small township reeling, it is a beautiful story from the past and the now. I do highly recommend this one it is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat at times, and cheering Pip on. Don’t miss this one another keeper from Karly Lane.
My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review.
New South Wales based author Karly Lane presents A Stone’s Throw Away, a captivating story that will delight fans of her work and the wider rural fiction genre.
At the centre of A Stone’s Throw Away is Pip Davenport, a committed and determined journalist . Pip is thrown into the aftermath of a mystery close to home and a possible news story. When a drought causes a dam to dry up on her uncle’s property, what is revealed sends Pip in a spin. But Pip is having trouble putting words to paper and an important deadline looms over her. Pip’s attention is soon turned towards a neighbour and a detective, who equally pose as a distraction from her writer’s block. As Pip continues to grapple with her personal and professional responsibilities, she is compelled to investigate the mystery remains of the dam further, which leads her to a ninety-eight-year-old war vet. It seems this man may just hold the key to solving this decades old case. It is clear the local town is withholding information about the past and it is up to Pip to help the community understand the real truth.
Karly Lane’s nineteenth book was released in May last year but sadly it has taken me the good part of the year to get to this engaging rural fiction release. With themes of the past, the war, misconceptions, resilience, investigative journalism, drought, climate change, romance and the supernatural, A Stone’s Throw Away proved to be a very pleasing read.
Pip Davenport is Lane’s appealing lead and I liked getting to know her as the story progressed. I admired Pip’s resolve and sense of determination. There is also a vulnerable side to Pip which we learn as the narrative unfurls. This emotional segment of A Stone’s Throw Away reveals information about Pip’s past and a traumatic incident that left her with both PTSD and anxiety. Lane is sensitive in her approach to this facet of the novel, delivering a narrative filled with compassion and insight. Pip’s attention in the story is taken away by two different men and I think Lane did a great job with the love triangle situation that developed as the storyline forged ahead.
My favourite aspect of A Stone’s Throw Away was the trip back to the past thanks to the character of Bert. Lane utilises some flashbacks and letters of correspondence between this soldier and his wife to give readers an essential insight into the mindset of a man fighting abroad. Lane also uses this area of the narrative to explore Pacific War. It was a fascinating story to read and it gave me a huge level of appreciation for the sacrifices made by our ancestors.
There is always an element of the land, nature and respect of our country in Lane’s novels and A Stone’s Throw Away is no exception to this trend. In this 2022 title, we witness the impact of drought on properties such as Pip’s uncles’ place. This was an intriguing thread and I enjoyed how it shaped the general storyline. I think the end was poignant, especially the slight supernatural conclusion. I felt satisfied when I turned the final page over.
A Stone’s Throw Away is a layered rural fiction novel that draws on instinct, pursuit of the truth, history, the war, trauma, the climate and romance to lure readers in to this entertaining country yarn.
*Thanks extended to Allen & Unwin for providing a free copy of this book for review purposes.
A Stone's Throw Away is about the power of love and forgiveness. Investigative journalist Phillipa Davenport needs a place to write a book about her last case, and Phillipa accepts her Uncle's offer to babysit his rural property. However, Phillipa Davenport became involved with a local cold case mystery due to writer's block and will it divide the small rural community. Readers of A Stone's Throw Away will continue to follow Phillipa Davenport to discover what happens.
A Stone's Throw Away is another fantastic book by Karly Lane. Wow, I became involved with this book from the start. I enjoyed the way Karly Lane incorporated her twist and turned in a way that I did not realise they were coming. I love Karly Lane's portrayal of her characters and how they interacted throughout this book. A Stone's Throw Away is well-written and researched by Karly Lane. I like Karly Lane's description of the settings of A Stone's Throw Away, which allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of A Stone's Throw Away will learn about the consequences of community cruelty on a person. Also, in A Stone's Throw Away, readers will understand some of the problems that can happen to investigative journalists.
What’s not to love about Karly Lane’s books? With well-developed characters, a beautiful setting and a storyline that keeps you turning the pages her books will entertain any reader.
A Stone’s Throw Away is a well-written story by a very talented Aussie author and I’m looking forward to her next book. I loved this book and have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone looking for their next read.
Investigative Journalist Pip Davenport moves to her uncle's quiet, country property to overcome a case of writers block. She is writing a book on her last assignment which ended in a prominent politician going to prison.
When a cold-case in the area is reopened Pip can't help but be pulled into the mystery. The town is tight-lipped and Pip feels there is more to this case than first appears.
The introduction of two potential love interests for Pip adds a touch of romance to this tension filled crime novel. I must admit to having a sneaky look forward to see who Pip would connect with. Pip is a strong, determined character. She is suffering a severe case of PTSD but when her journalistic instincts kick in she is fearless and doesn't balk at ruffling a few feathers.
Karly Lane has delivered a wonderfully immersive novel with visually pleasing descriptions, a highly engaging plot, gripping suspense and compelling twists.
A Stone's Throw Away is a story of courage, resilience and a passion for the truth. *I received my copy from the publisher
A huge thank you to Allen and Unwin for sending me this book to review.
What a brilliant book. I loved it. For me this was a book about trusting your instincts. The book is told by Pip's point of view. I loved Karlys descriptive language of the scenery as it made me feel like I was right there. Pip had to decide whether to go along with the small town minds, or trust her own judgement about Bert the 98 year old war veteran. She also has to trust her instincts when she meets two local detectives. This book is about secrets, romance and suspense all rolled into one. It goes back to 1938 where we hear about Berts war stories through the letters he writes home to his wife Molly. I had a connection with all the characters and the way it ended was superb. I was engaged in the story from the first page to the last page. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
There is so much to love about this one! It is definitely one for a multitude of readers with some romance, mystery, history and suspense thrown in, keeping the reader engaged all the way through!
When journalist Pip Davenport is presented the opportunity to house sit her uncle’s rural property, she sees it as a great opportunity to isolate herself and write the book she is contracted to write on a case she was working on.
What Pip did not expect was to find herself absorbed in a cold case! After a moment of writers block, Pip decides to arrange the junk out of the old dried up dam to be cleared out but what is found is long buried secrets of the past and Pip needs to find out the truth!
I read this book in one sitting! Absolutely absorbed in the story, the setting and the suspense! Highly recommended!
A Stone’s Throw Away is the latest engaging novel from Australian bestseller Karly Lane.
Still reeling from a vicious assault after breaking the story of a corrupt politician, investigative journalist Phillipa ‘Pip’ Davenport, has retreated to her uncle’s property, Rosehaven, in rural Victoria to write a book about the high profile case. Despite her best intentions, Pip finds it difficult to settle to the task, and in the spirit of procrastination, decides to hire someone to remove the detritus at the bottom of her uncle’s dam, exposed by the ongoing drought. To her shock, and that of the small community of Midgiburra, the skeleton of a young woman is discovered in the rusted remains of an old car, and Pip finds herself caught up in the decades old mystery, even as her own past threatens to catch up with her.
Offering intrigue and romance, this contemporary set novel also touches on Australian history.
There are two elements of suspense in A Stone’s Throw Away, one of which centres around Pip and her safety. Though her assault was likely at the behest of the politician Pip exposed who is now jailed, her attacker was never identified, and concern remains that she is still a target. Pip simply wants to put the incident behind her but, struggling with PTSD, she can’t always suppress episodes of anxiety.
Pip’s wariness also affects her interactions with the two romantic possibilities introduced, local police officer, Erik, and city detective Chris. Though she chooses to drop her guard with one of the men, she soon finds herself wondering if she’s made a deadly mistake.
The other thread of mystery involves the former owner of Rosehaven, 98-year-old Bert Bigsby, a WWII veteran incapacitated and confined to a nursing home after a major stroke, and the fate of his wife, Molly, who disappeared seventy years ago. Despite her reluctance to get involved in the cold case, Pip uncovers the heartbreaking story of deception and betrayal that has haunted Bert, and exposes the truth behind the accusations levied against him by the town.
It’s through Bert’s character that Lane highlights a facet of Australia’s involvement in WWII, adding another layer of interest to the novel. Bert, like many young men, volunteered to serve in the Australian Armed Forces, though he and Molly were essentially newlyweds. Letters from Bert to Molly provide some insight into the experiences of those soldiers who served in Papua New Guinea, particularly those who were captured in the Australian Territory peacetime capital, Rabaul, when it fell to the Japanese.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, though I did feel the touch of supernatural that linked Pip and Molly was an unnecessary addition. With its appealing characters, well crafted setting, and layered storyline, A Stone’s Throw Away is an entertaining read.
⭐️5 Stars⭐️ Karly Lane has smashed it with A Stone’s Throw Away, I was so pulled in by this brilliant book I could barely put it down!
The plot has the perfect mixture of rural crime, romance, suspense and a gripping mystery. it’s a book that I can honestly highly recommend to readers of most genres as it has a sprinkle of everything.
Pip Davenport is an investigative journalist, she’s struggling to write a book that’s based on one of her past articles that almost cost her life. She currently has a case of writers block and she’s not going to meet the contract deadline the way she’s going. When the opportunity arises to housesit her uncles home in quiet country Victoria for three months she decides to accept.
With the current drought the waterhole on her uncles rural property has dried up. It’s looks a bit of a dumping ground and Pip decides to call in contractors to clean it up. Old secrets are accidentally uncovered and Pip finds herself involved in a cold case.
I loved the different threads of the story especially Pip trusting her gut instinct in helping Bert the ninety-eight year old war veteran, who was the prior owner of her uncles property and is now in a nursing home. The town clearly show they are biased towards Bert and he’s certainly a memorable character with an intriguing but devastating back story!
On the romance front there’s sparks flying with two potential love interests, will Pip chose the right one?
Fast paced, heartwarming and totally engaging. Highly recommended read, don’t miss this one!

With a large amount of drama, a sprinkle of romance, a double whammy of mystery and a splash of suspense, A Stone’s Throw Away is one book that you will love from cover to cover. Journalist Phillipa Davenport arrives in Midgiburra at her uncle’s property to relax and write a book on the case she’s been currently working on. Questions arise, long buried secrets unfold and the whole town are about to face the truth. Rural fiction boss Karly Lane has done it again. Strong characters, a descriptive setting and a plot full of wonderful are all here to enjoy immensely. There’s a small rural love story, an interesting backstory and a compelling clever mystery subplot woven through that really elevates it. With a Karly Lane novel you are always quaranteed an enjoyable, entertaining and exciting read.
Wow super impressed with this audiobook. Loved the Aussie accents of course but the mystery and suspense was excellent. Pip a investigative journalist goes to the country to write a book about her recent story in which she was attacked, nearly killed and uncovered political graft and scandal. Her quiet retreat is ruined by the discovery of a body in nearly dried up dam on the property. So starts the multi-layered plot that involves the body from the past, the political scandal from the present and has Pip running for her life. She doesn't know who to trust or who is after her. This was really gripping story and loved the body from the past mystery that was solved by the end. Highly recommend this audio, I couldn't stop listening as it is so well plotted and kept me guessing kind of reminded me of a really good Linda Howard book.
Five Star all the way. Exceptional read from Karly, covered so many genres without becoming muddled. Definitely one to set a weekend aside for, you won't want to be interrupted!
Pip Devonport is used to exposing the truth. As an investigative journalist, she has brought down corrupt police and politicians. But her last expose left her brutally attacked in her own home. Still, Pip is planning to write a book about the politician she famously brought down.
Taking a three month leave of absence from her job, Pip travels south to assume the role of care taker of her uncle's property. But all plans of writing takes a back seat when a cold case from the 1940's occurs right on her doorstep...
There's so much to love in this book with a fine blend of history, suspense and of course romance. For me, Bert and Molly's tragic wartime tale was the standout. Karly really knows how to write this particular era, bringing our ANZAC past into the present day.
There's no doubt in my mind that ꪖ ડ𝕥ꪮꪀꫀ'ડ 𝕥ꫝ𝕣ꪮ᭙ ꪖ᭙ꪖꪗ is Karly Lane's best book yet!
This book has the feeling of a romantic thriller. Karly keeps you guessing on what’s next, keeping you engaged in both the investigative story and romance components. The story includes motivational aspects of not giving up on your career dreams and the idea that there’s more to life than small country life while also proving the positives of small community support.
Really enjoyed this book it was a mix of small town romance, gossip, secrets, lies with some history, crime, natural disasters and twists thrown in. It is not often that the war in PNG comes into a book but i really enjoyed it all. Great read
Karly Lane has done it again. Her writing and her storytelling skills just keep getting better. A Stone's Throw Away is a compelling tale with elements from many genres that I just didn't want to put down... until I didn't pick it up for days because I didn't want it to end. There is suspense, love, loss, war, corruption, history and a beautifully peaceful rural setting A massive ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me. Thanks @karly_lane_author and @allenandunwin for another engrossing read. #amreading #amreviewing #allenandunwin #booklover #bookreviewer #miclovesbooks #WorldWar2
In “A Stone’s Throw Away” Karly Lane again gives readers a highly enjoyable romantic suspense novel which touches lightly on other genres. Fans will not be disappointed, and new readers are likely to be converted to fans.
Pip Davenport is an investigative journalist, and a good one. Her latest expose was a triumph, exposing a corrupt politician and others around him, and resulting in jail sentences. However, the triumph was tainted to some extent by threats and attacks from those who wanted to shut her up. Pip’s been commissioned to write a book based on the case and her investigative work, so she’s retreated to Midgiburra to housesit, write, and hopefully recover from the stresses. Midgiburra is tiny, so should provide peace, quiet, and no distractions.
It works great for about two days, and then Pip decides to take advantage of the drought that’s largely drained the billabong to remove the rubbish that’s been thrown in it over the decades. Within hours the workers have dredged up old washing machines, farm equipment – and a body.
The resulting investigation not only distracts Pip by itself, but offers up two new distractions in the form of two attractive police officers – Erik Neilsen and Chris Jarrett. This is, I think, why the novel reminded me of romantic suspense novels from the 1980s. A recurring motif there was often competing suitors, and the looming suspicion that one – or perhaps both – was not the man he seemed. This seems a less used motif these days.
Lane uses this tension extremely well, using the two men to inject not just romance but also increasing suspicion and paranoia into Pip’s life. We see most of the events of the novel through Pip’s eyes, and she’s a strong character most readers will empathise with. Her curiousity drives much of the plot and draws readers into the multiple questions she finds herself poking into.
We share her uncertainty about the men she’s attracted to, her hopes to put the bad things behind her, and her increasing emotional engagement with the people who lived in her house before her.
There are multiple story lines, and Lane balances them well so that none dominates unduly. I thought the issues Pip was investigating were credible and believable, and so were other people’s reactions to her questions.
This is a romantic suspense novel, but it also touches lightly on historical fiction and the supernatural. “A Stone’s Throw Away” doesn’t really venture into either genre, but uses some story telling elements which wouldn’t be out of place there. They fitted into this novel seamlessly, and helped avoid the tinge of melodrama that sometimes surfaces in romantic suspense.
I enjoyed reading this a great deal. It’s an interesting and credible story, populated by believable and empathetic characters. It’s a fairly light read, due largely to an easy writing style that draws you along smoothly. It’s likely to appeal to a variety of readers: those looking for romance, suspense, or contemporary novels will all find something to enjoy.
Brimming with drama, intrigue and twists and turns that have you wondering just who can you trust, this Aussie author’s well-researched writing style grabs your attention right from the start while her cleverness in painting excellent word pictures holds you captive, like this one: ‘She had felt a little of her old self return, and with that some of her old fire. Yet still those remaining wisps of fear lurked in the back of her mind, like bothersome cobwebs that loitered in corners – almost invisible until the light caught them and revealed their annoying presence.’ Pip is an investigative journalist who’s taken some much-needed time out from her fast-paced big-city career to look after her uncle’s rundown farm on the outskirts of Midgiburra, a small town in outback Victoria, while trying to write an explosive expose on a dirty politician who’s now sitting in a jail cell after being found guilty of multiple horrendous crimes due to her keen investigative skills. Peace and quiet is just what Pip needs after being attacked by a shadowy figure from the underworld who was on the payroll of her most recent news story while she was investigating his dastardly deeds. But life in this small outback town isn’t at all what Pip is expecting, especially when an old skeleton turns up in a drought-stricken waterhole on the property she’s housesitting, and not one but two good-looking lawmen walk into this new slower-paced life she craves: the local copper who first befriends her and sets her heart a little a’flutter with his confident ways and gentle smile, and an eagle-eyed indigenous detective with an intriguing manner accompanied by a flirty grin who’s just arrived from the Big Smoke to get to the bottom of this latest mystery. How is an inquisitive reporter supposed to keep her nose out of an intriguing investigation happening right on her doorstep, especially when the first two men she meets after moving here are far too handsome for anyone’s good, let alone a canny young woman who’s doing her darnedest to keep her head down and stay clear of drama in any form. The interwoven backstory from WWII adds a another layer of poignancy and introduces characters who touch your heart over the injustices that life can bring. This is the first book I’ve read of Karly’s, but it definitely won’t be my last and I readily give it well-deserved 8 stars out of 10.
Karly Lane is back with a new romantic fiction novel set in rural Victoria, and it was an absolute treat to be back in one of her stories.
Pip Davenport is a successful investigative journalist who’s just finished the story of a lifetime – the uncovering of political corruption – which led to threats made to her life. Pushed by her friends and family to take some time to herself to rest and recover from her ordeal, she house-sits for her uncle in Midgiburra, with a plan to write the book she’s been putting off for the last year. But when the drought uncovers the bones of a body hidden in the dried up dam behind her uncle’s property, Pip is drawn into the mystery surrounding the previous owner of her uncle’s home, the small town’s suspicions and more than one unsolved mystery.
This was a surprisingly light read for the content, and highly engaging. Karly Lane knows how to write the every day person – the kind of character who draws you in because they remind you of your friends and family – getting caught up in something bigger than themselves. Pip is a tenacious woman who’s lived through something horrific and is still dealing with the trauma of that, supported by friends and family. She’s also determined to be independent and not bogged down by her experiences. She can’t help but be intrigued by this new mystery that’s dropped into her lap, despite knowing she has other priorities, because she sees the human element behind it.
There was the hint of a love triangle (in that two men take an interest in Pip) with local police officer, Erik Nielson, and local detective, Chris Jarrett, being involved in uncovering who the bones belong to and what happened to them. There’s a tension between the two of them that Pip doesn’t know the story of at first, and as the story unravels, begins to piece together. She’s not quite sure who to trust, and given that she’s in the middle of nowhere on her own, creates some eerie moments at pivotal points.
One thing Lane does incredibly well is weave some of Australia’s history through her stories – through character histories and flashbacks and letters. One of the characters that Pip begins investigating is Bert, a WWII veteran, who returned to Midgiburra a changed man after the battle of Rabaul. While it’s not a main plot thread, it impacts on the way the story plays out as Pip learns more and adds an extra layer of depth to the story that draws you in.
As always, I’m highly impressed by Lane’s ability to write compelling, entertaining and emotional storylines that hook me in right from the start.
A Stone’s Throw Away is the nineteenth novel from prolific author, Karly Lane. The Australian writer is known for her rural fiction and her latest release incorporates a variety of themes that will resonate with readers. From drought to corruption to journalism, it is evident that Lane has completed her research to create an authentic experience in a small town. The central character of A Stone’s Throw Away is Philippa ‘Pip” Davenport. I really enjoyed becoming acquainted with the thirty five year old as she moves into her uncle’s home in Midgiburra to housesit.
A journalist, Pip is there to recover from a work related traumatic incident involving corruption that has had unexpected long term impact. Lane kept me guessing on the details and I was shocked when the full extent was revealed. It would be difficult to find a person who wasn’t scarred in some way or another. Writing a novel about her experiences is one way for Pip to begin to heal.
In the process of recuperating and dealing with writer’s block, Pip helps her uncle out by clearing the waterhole on the land. When the professionals recover an old vehicle, Pip unexpectedly stumbles upon a mystery. The car leads her to ninety eight year old Bert.
Bert, a war veteran, is a resident in a nursing home. A cache of letters from his past open Pip’s eyes. Try as she might, Pip can’t resist the lure of the past as it comes to collide with the present, and her work ethos shines through.
Tenacious, and professional, Pip puts her heart and soul into her story. She cares for the town people, yet she also isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers to get to the truth. Those feathers include two men in the police force, Chris and Erik.
Attracted to both men, one quickly makes his move, winning Pip over. It is the start of the perfect relationship until a warning starts Pip’s alarm bells ringing.
Is Pip’s life in danger? Will she solve the small town mystery before it’s too late?
A must read for fans of rural fiction with a difference.
Thanks to Allen & Unwin Australia for the opportunity to read and review this book.
When a drought dries up the contents of a water hole on her uncle's property, the last thing Investigative journalist Phillipa Davenport expected to find was a body.
On a deadline and with a severe case of writers block, Pip doesn't have time to investigate this story - she just wants to write her book. However, the universe and her neighbour seem to have other ideas. And then there's the mysterious detective assigned to the case, who Pip is beginning to find very distracting.
When the only person of interest is a ninety year old war veteran, who's unable to communicate, and who appears to have been found unjustly guilty in the court of public opinion, Pip feels herself becoming drawn to the case despite the fact she simply doesn't have time to take it on. But how often does an eighty year old cold case murder land on your doorstep?
With more questions arising with each layer of the past Pip peels back, she soon realises she's opened a can of worms and secrets thought long buried, suddenly emerge and bring with it some hard truths for the little town to face.
My review I really enjoyed this easy read. Loved how the author has covered quite a few storylines in the book without it feeling cluttered. I knew at the start that the cop was in on it. Threw me off a little with the love interest detective appearing to be a dirty cop, but of course he was under cover. Really enjoyed the war history aspect and the mystery of the body found in the dam. Ending felt a little rushed but other than that a really good read.

I decided to listen to this on a Whim as an Audio while I was working on a craft project. I found myself devouring it like my favourite expensive Haighs chocolates - you know, not stopping till it's gone and a cyclone couldn't have pulled me away from it! I was torn between 4 or 5 ⭐'s with the latter winning me over due the level of satisfaction that was felt on completion - suddenly I'm now craving Haighs chocolates 😋🍫
I was expecting a good quality rural romance with a bit extra. But this came with the American style supersized extras with all of the other genres so cleverly tied into the story. It has just about everything from Ptsd, suspense, murder mystery, crime solving, investigative journalism, corruption, touch of Australian war veteran history, some twists, a bit of the mystical, as well as the Romance and heartbreaking long lost love story ❤️
I'm in great admiration on how Karly Lane has so brilliantly blended so many genre's and topics to create intriguing characters in an irresistible page turner story.
I just adored this story, it was just the prefect mix of romance, crime with a big dash of suspense!
Phillipa ‘Pip’ Davenport was in the country to take a break, to take sometime to write, she has a deadline to meet, a distraction wasn’t what she was after.
But hey when a dead body is discovered, and it’s tied up with a 70 year old cold case, Pip can’t help but be a journalist and this is just the start of what is to come.
There was just so much to love about this book, I love how Karly Lane can stir up all the emotions, her writing easily draws you in and keeps you captivated.
I became so invested in the characters, even trying to justify some of their actions not wanting to believe certainly things. There was a moment when I really felt annoyance the way Pip did when she first visited the nursing home. It actually kept coming back into my thoughts.
I loved that this was so much more than just Pip’s story.
An entertaining read: drama, romance, suspense & a little ghostly mystery. Investigative journalist, Pip Davenport, is suffering from PTSD & writer's block when she leaves Melbourne to house-sit in Midgiburra for her uncle. The move doesn't immediately rectify her current problems but it does supply a mystery to take her mind off them, & a little romantic interest. Pip's welcome isn't entirely universal the small rural town but this only whets her appetite.
I enjoyed the story, & it was very easy-reading. I did have a bit of trouble engaging with the characters, they weren't as well-developed as I'd like. I will be looking for more from this author as I particularly enjoyed Wish You Were Here.
I do like me a bit of romantic suspense and this author definitely had the skill of storytelling!
Pip is an investigative journalist who is suffering from PTSD after covering a major story and being attacked by an unknown person because of it. She is looking after her Uncle Nev's property for a few months in a tiny country town, and under pressure to write a book.
When Pip comes across the story of missing Molly Bigsby, her instincts make her want to try and find out what happened to her. Molly's husband is a WWII veteran and unable to speak but Pip is sure there is a story there too.
What is going on, though, between the two police detectives who seem to have a history of bad blood between them?
I really liked this story. All the elements worked well and there was a bit of tension, plus a sprinkling of romance which is always nice :)
After helping send a corrupt politician to jail and suffering an horrific assault Pip (Phillipa) Davenport, an investigative reporter, relocates to her uncle’s country property, in the midst of drought, from her home in Sydney. There she plans to write a book about her investigation but is finding it difficult to concentrate. Pip has organised a cleanup of the dam on her uncle’s property when the contractor stumbles upon some old bones in a submerged car. Gradually Pip is drawn into researching this cold case, becoming involved with the town’s local policeman and a detective from neighbouring Coopers Creek. Well-written, unputdownable, suspenseful with small town prejudices rearing their ugly heads, weather and landscape making for a compelling read.
