A hug and a giggle? Who doesn’t love a good higgle!?
This delightfully playful board book will have readers of all ages chuckling as they read fabricated words of affection. A tickle plus a snuggle makes for a tuggle while a snickle and a higgle gets you a sniggle. Accented by adorable photos of beaming babies, this silly board book takes the reader on an engaging romp through repeated rhyming sounds landing right back at the best feeling ever—a snuggle with someone you love.
Alisha Sevigny holds a degree in Professional Writing and Sociology from the University of Victoria, is a film school graduate, former literary agent and hot yoga lover.
A shameless romantic, Alisha and her husband have travelled the world together. On a trip to Panama she fell in love with the country, culture, and their national emblem, the Golden Frog and was inspired to write her first Young Adult novel, KISSING FROGS.
Her second book, SUMMER CONSTELLATIONS is about a young woman fighting to save her family campground while trying not to fall in love, comes out May 1, 2018 with KCP Loft.
Born and raised in Kitimat, British Columbia, Alisha has always had a strong connection to the environment and conservationist spirit. She now lives in Toronto with her family.
Oh my goodness, it's cute out there! I am stepping away from my usual reviewing practices with this adorable little book, because I am now the proud grandmother of a racially and ethnically blended grandchild, and every little person deserves to have quality literature available featuring at least one face that resemble their own.
My thanks go to Net Galley and Orca Book Publishers for the review copy. This book is for sale now.
There's not much text here, nor should there be. Infant books need to be long on images--with happy human faces the very best of all--and cuddling opportunities with the big person doing the reading. This is how we learn that we love reading.
The images are terrific! There are thirteen pages. Each page has a photograph of a baby being "snickled," which is a blend of snuggle and tickle. Five images feature white or blended families, including one baby with Down's Syndrome. Five are Black or blended families, including one very Black family, which I am especially glad to see; so many public images of Black people feature those that are very, very light-skinned, and children notice these things. There are two more sets of family members that might be Latinx, Asian, or American Indian, or a combination of these.
I almost never go out and buy books that I have read for free; this will be one of the rare exceptions. Highly recommended for families of children under age 3; this would also make a great baby gift.
GIVE ME A SNICKLE by Alisha Sevigny just landed next to ONE by Kathryn Otoshi on my very short shelf of the very best board books in the world. Thankfully, because I'm sure ONE was getting lonely.
If you love language and if you love children, then you must own this inventive and joyous tribute to words and kids. I cannot wait to read it to the littles in my life (and some of the bigs, too).
The photos are sweet and tender and the beautiful blend of people underscores the blend of words: the book's creative concept.
This review, however, comes with a warning. If you're like me you will not be able to stop saying 'snickle'.
This is a charming and adorable board book for babies and toddlers! An adorable ode to affection and expressive language, kids will love the silly made-up words and opportunities for cuddles while reading. The pictures of babies with the people who love them will appeal to very young readers who love seeing themselves on the page. This would make an excellent baby shower/new parent gift and could definitely become an oft-repeated favorite!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
The pictures are cute but the words bother me. Board books are to share with your baby and toddler, who are trying to grasp language. Throwing in nonsense words doesn't make sense to me. I am not a fan of "baby talk."
Snuggle up with your little one for this book about cozying up together. I love the made up words that will make a baby laugh. Each spread shows different diverse babies and grown-ups. Great for storytime.
Of the books with made up words, this one was not my favorite. I spent so much energy processing the hybrid words that I didn't have much energy to enjoy the very nice accompanying diverse family photographs.
I love everything about his book. I love every photo, love all the text. I cannot wait to share this with my Wonderful Ones! Please, more books like this for me to share.
