With just one month to go until Walt Disney World’s ambitious Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort makes its maiden voyage, Marvel has released Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy Issue #1, “The Storm on the Horizon.” The comic series, written by Ethan Sacks, with artwork and coloring by Will Sliney and Rochelle Rosenberg, respectively, will span a total of five issues and reveal the secrets of Disney’s extremely expensive themed hotel.

While “The Storm on the Horizon” does feature two of my favorite eras—The Prequel Era and The High Republic—it does, unfortunately, feel a little bit like a glorified piece of theme park marketing. Which I suppose is the nature of the beast. It opens on an excursion that Padmé and Anakin had aboard the Halcyon during the Clone Wars, with the pair facing off against Asajj Ventress in a flashback, before flashing even further back to the High Republic era.

In these flashbacks, we see Burryaga and his Master Nib Assek aboard the Halcyon in the wake of the Great Hyperspace Disaster and of course—the Nihil attack. The Jedi manage to avoid a crisis by subduing the Nihil and keeping most of the passengers aboard the starcruiser completely ignorant to the attack, but the cliffhanger seems to imply that they’re going to have to deal with an attack of a slightly larger size in the next issue.

For the first issue in this new mini-series, Sacks does quite well with balancing new-to-him characters and capturing the essence of who they are in The High Republic. It’s great fun to see Nib fighting alongside her Padawan and to see Stellan Gios show up to offer some assistance in the middle of a firefight.

Halcyon Legacy also provides the first glimpse of the crew of the Galactic Starcruiser, though this specific crew is definitely long gone by the time that passengers will have to contend with the threat of the First Order. But Sliney and Rosenberg expertly take up the task of replicating the Halcyon’s interior and the crew’s uniforms.

While my initial assessment is that this feels like a Disney Parks cash grab, with clear intent to tap into an audience that likely hasn’t pulled together the credits required for setting off on the Halcyon in March, I’m going to try to reserve my judgment until the full run of the series has come out. I’m never going to say no to more High Republic era stories or glimpses into the Prequel era, but I just hope it all connects into the larger Marvel comic series.

"It was okay." - 2 out of 5 star rating.

I have mixed feelings about flashbacks being the majority of content within material, this one being about a 90/10 split... where yes, 90% of this comic book is an inward reflection of the past.

I will say, it is decently done. The dots connect nicely to present day as well, so this really isn't the the main reason why this is only coming in at 2 stars. If anything, the flashback was the highlight of The Halcyon Legacy #1.

The reason for -3 here is ultimately for starters... nothing really happens. And not only is this incredibly uneventful, there is no world building, there is no character deep dive,.. none of that good stuff. Alignment feels poor, action is minimal, and there is no added depth for the reader when it comes to any of the characters, the Jedi, the High Republic, or the Nihil. The ONLY thing that you really gain is a little bit of backstory about The Halcyon... which could have been easily accomplished within a single introductory page of text like how most comics start, laying the foundational ground work of what is ahead.

Finally, a Wookiee Jedi is just really silly to me. It's like an Ogre doing ballet, wearing a pink skin suit, walking on its tip-toes, and doing graceful twirls and bows... and trying to take that serious. I guess it could be pulled off... if one was open minded... but what we get here just feels bad. Wookiees gargle-speak, while wearing robes, piloting space ships, with their massive sasquatch frame with enough strength to easily dismember other humanoids with their bare hands... humming and channeling the force, using a laser sword... I just can't do it. Feels so ridiculous and so wrong.

I do think this comic book series is going to be okay though. Next up on the cover is Aurra Sing! She's definitely a bounty hunter favorite of mine, so I am super interested on how she will be injected into this story and what she brings to the table here within the Halcyon Legacy.

Ready for Take off

story: The Halcyon is the most advanced luxury starcruiser of its generation and its been transporting people since 275 years. In the present pirates try to board it in order to find a resistance spy. The service droid Deethree-Ohnine tries to calm a young girl, who visits the ship together with her grandfather, by telling stories of the good old times. In this first issue the little robot remembers a Nihil attack which is pushed back by Nib Assek and her padawan Burryaga...

rating: "The Halcyon Legacy" actually has a promising idea: combining all ages of Star Wars within a single series -from the newest (High Republic) to the oldest (originals). The whole setting is quite interesting and I very much enjoy the idea of this droid being around for so long that he starts to tell stories. HOWEVER we all know that this series is just established to promote the new Star Wars themed resort of Disney and it kinda shows. The story itself couldn't be less intruiging. Jedi defend a ship against the Nihil, Nihil use gas, Nihil retreat - a stereotypical story with no excitement. The art style is clear and nice to look at but nothing special. The combination leaves a boring first issue which took nearly all my motivation for this series.

conclusion:Nice idea but basic and boring execution. 2/5

Ok, I only read this because we are going on the Galactic Star Cruiser later this month. The Halcyon is apparently also appearing in the High Republic book series (book 3 mission to disaster) and season 3 of the Disney+ show The Mandalorian. It appears that Disney is working the Halcyon into the cannon.

Yes, this could just be high level marketing. However, since I’m among those who have followed the Halcyon since Disney pulled the permits for an secret hotel with only 100 rooms, I am thrilled to have these resources creating more depth to our experience.

The story is a classic Jedi tale but may not appeal to anyone outside of the Halcyon passengers. Since I am among those with vested interest, I look forward to the sequels!

A good Star Wars story that takes place over three different time frames The High Republic, The Clones Wars, and The Age of Rebellion each time line had its own story but there was also and overarching story taking place on the same ship called the Halcyon.

3.5 stars. Not a bad adventure if you can forget it’s an ad for Disney’s space hotel.

This was pretty weak. It is clear that this is a promotional piece for the new hotel experience. The only thing that gave it 2 stars was some of the artwork for the ships.

Kind of a typical theme park location tie-in. I do like that it at least flashes back to the High Republic era.
