Who doesn't like farts? In most groups, anyone who didn't just fart. And Cassie, the little girl from this book's title, tends to be The One Who Farted. This kid, I tell you, farts up a storm, day and night, more farts per hour than my elderly mother, and she can really light up a room with her farts, let me tell you.

This constant pong around Cassie doesn't make her popular with her classmates, who invent a song calling her Gassy Cassie, and it's all terribly mean and Cassie doesn't like it, especially because she can't help her propensity for farting.

And then a new girl joins her group, and this girl can't smell Cassie's farts, so they become best friends. End of the book, you might think, but NO! There's an encounter with a huge bear, and Cassie comes to the rescue, and everybody loves her, farts 'n all.

I think this might be the first picture book I've read that doesn't really seem to have a lesson or message - sure, there's something there about acceptance, but the girl who first accepts Cassie maybe only does so because she can't smell the farts. And Cassie only gets accepted generally when she proves the worth of her farts in the dangerous wilderness.

Ah who cares, it's a sweet little story, with lovely illustrations.

I'd suggest eating a lot of beans (the most musical fruit) before reading this one to your tyke, blowing the ol' trouser trumpet everytime you turn the page.

Parents, caregivers, and teachers would be hard pressed to find many picture book titles devoted to funny but embarrassing body noises, especially farting. There's always Walter the Farting Dog, but it isn't just canines that emit pungent odors. Humans do too, a fact which makes this book quite relatable in many respects. Although the ending seems rather unlikely, the rest of the story seems true to life even though much of it is exaggerated for humorous effect. When Cassie is born, she comes out of her mother's womb with a great big fart, and she never looks back from there. Her parents adjust to their smelly child, but even her grandmother is unable to stand her odor. Things get worse when Cassie starts school since her classmates dub her "Gassy Cassie," make up a rhyme about her, and shun her. Cassie feels lonely until she is befriended by Rita, a new classmate, who isn't able to smell her farts and doesn't care about them anyway. The two have great fun together, especially since wherever they go, the other youngsters avoid, leaving them on their own. But Cassie proves her worth to the others on a school field trip when her smelly fart repels a bear threatening the group. Readers will realize that there are many different types of heroism and that someone's supposed deficits or problems can actually turn out to be assets. The artwork is just as exaggerated as the text, which makes it fun to read.

L'histoire

Absolutely hilarious, this deals with ever-appealing farts. Giant farts. Smelly farts. Farts so big and smelly that Julieta can clear a beach with them. She gets teased mercilessly about them in school, but ends up finding the perfect friend: one who can't smell. Of course, the ending is the tired classic "what made the bullies tease the protagonist ends up saving them all so they all change their minds about it" trope, but that can't diminish the humor of farts that permeates the book. I was just thankful the book isn't scratch and sniff! The body humor shows that this isn't an American book, and I appreciated the expressive language. I wanted to read it over again just to savor the words.

This was a fun read about a problem Cassie has after eating. This child has trouble making friends because of her farts but shows everyone how effective it is when they are afraid and threatened.
