In Grant, Massachusetts, dozens of people are showing up at Med Center with bizarre symptoms--some are even on the verge of death. And no one knows why this is happening--no one but Patsy Keene, a vengeful Registered Nurse who works in the ER.
Diane Hoh is the author of fifty-seven novels for young adults. She grew up in Warren, Pennsylvania but currently resides in Austin, Texas. Reading and writing are her favorite things, alongside gardening and grandchildren.
It is supposed to be a surprise who the "killer" is, isn't it? So why does the summary on this site give it away? Luckily, I didn't read the summary first or I would have been ticked, the back book cover does not give the secret away.
Anyhow, the book was not good. I love Diane Hoh and was quite displeased with this work. The characters were annoying.
So glad I didn't read the blurb before reading the book because it literally tells you the person responsible which you don't find out until right at the end of the book! 😲
Anyway, Will has a stomach problem, then a girl called Julie has a stomach problem, then another girl has a stomach problem, and a child has a stomach thing. Nobody knows if or how they're connected, and some of them seem fine later, but Julie dies. Then Callie is the next victim, which doesn't go down too well with her father who runs the hospital. So one of the doctors decides that it could be poison, and a forensic pathologist is called in to examine Julie. It's determined that the victims were all poisoned with arsenic. Then it's discovered that the arsenic wasn't added at Grant Pharmaceuticals, it was added in the ER, and a letter is published in the paper explaining how it happened. A team is sent to another hospital to get the antidote for Callie because it seems that it's all gone missing from MC. It's foggy when the helicopter returns though, and it crashes, killing the pilot and a nurse who was on the ground and injuring several other people including Suzanna. Later Kate and Suzanna have to empty the locker of Patsy (the nurse who died) and find the letter that was written to the newspaper. The police investigate and determine that it was Patsy who poisoned the medication, because she was annoyed that one of the doctors had dumped her.
I read these when I was a "tweener," and plan to read them again at the and of this summer. I ordered all 6 from Goodwill's across the country, Jenson's Books, Once Upon a Time Books, etc.
It took me YEARS to remember this series! To find it again, ohhh...I am SO elated! 😊😁
I will edit these reviews once I re-read, as it has been almost a quarter century (omg, I'm getting old! XP)
P.S.
Her two books on the Titanic are on my re-read list as well. I bought them this time on Kindle. ;)
Thank you for all the amazing memories, Diane Hoh, and all the new ones that will be made from
This was one of six books in the series and I loved them as a teen; I still pick them up off my shelf and read them. They fascinated me with the medical drama going on with those my age and that teens were able to do procedures that in real life, it wouldn't be allowed. I feel in love with these books and sought them out. If you can suspend your concept of reality, you'll find drama, excitement, romance and more. It is even more enjoyable if you like medical fiction.
