Grim would’ve been a better title
I actually really enjoyed the premise for this book. It was not what I was expecting it to be, but nevertheless, it was an interesting and imaginative take on Alice in Wonderland, filled with creepy cannibals, insane characters, and good mix of blood and gore. While I figured out a lot of the plot, there was still one missing piece that was a good little twist for me at the end.
This book could’ve easily been four or five stars. My problem was with the writing and editing. The author clearly enjoyed the word Grim (and all forms including grimly, grimacing, grimaced, etc…). I wish of the 264 references to this word he would’ve changed it up a bit. The sentence structure also drove me a bit crazy… now I did take into account that this is an English author and I’m an American reader so sometimes phrases sound a little off to me; however, I’ve read books from other English authors and the writing was much smoother. I just feel this book needed to be edited a few more times - tighten up the sentences, clean up the structure, add some commas, fix the mistake words and phrases, and remove or change the repetitive words. I think the book could’ve probably been 40 pages shorter with the proper edits. English was never my best subject, so my critique is solely based on my own ease of reading.
All that being said, I kept reading because the story was so interesting! I couldn’t put it down, even though I rolled my eyes every time the word grim was used, again and again. I very much enjoyed the story and how it ended.
