Το βιβλίο αυτό παρουσιάζει στον φοιτητή και τον μη ειδικό αναγνώστη τις κύριες ιστορικές εξελίξεις στην πολιτική, την κοινωνία, τον πολιτισμό και τη θρησκεία σε δυο ιστορικές περιόδους που μέχρι σήμερα αντιμετωπίζονταν χωριστά: την ελληνιστική εποχή, η οποία ξεκινάει συμβατικά με τη βασιλεία του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου και τελειώνει με τον θάνατο της Κλεοπάτρας (336–30 π.Χ.), και την πρώιμη αυτοκρατορική εποχή, από την εγκαθίδρυση μοναρχικού πολιτεύματος από τον Αύγουστο (27 π.Χ.) έως τον θάνατο του Αδριανού (138 μ.Χ.). Η από κοινού πραγμάτευση αυτής της «μακράς ελληνιστικής εποχής», για πρώτη φορά στη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, συμβάλλει στην καλύτερη κατανόηση των κοινωνικών και πολιτιστικών εξελίξεων που συντελέστηκαν κατά τη διάρκειά της.

Ο τίτλος Εποχή των κατακτήσεων παραπέμπει κυριολεκτικά στις στρατιωτικές κατακτήσεις, που είναι τα κύρια σημεία καμπής σε αυτή την περίοδο, αλλά και μεταφορικά στις κατακτήσεις στον τομέα του πολιτισμού, στην άνευ προηγουμένου επέκταση της γνώσης, των τεχνικών δεξιοτήτων και των πνευματικών οριζόντων των ελληνικών και ελληνόφωνων περιοχών από την εποχή του Αλεξάνδρου και μετά. Το βιβλίο εξηγεί πώς η «μακρά ελληνιστική εποχή» άλλαξε τη θέση των Ελλήνων στην οικουμένη (την κατοικημένη γη), καθιστώντας την ιστορία τους αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της «παγκόσμιας» ιστορίας της αρχαιότητας. Η αγγλική έκδοση, που έχει μεταφραστεί σε πολλές γλώσσες, έχει καθιερωθεί διεθνώς ως βασικό εγχειρίδιο αρχαίας ιστορίας.

猶記得幾年前，剛剛踏入西方古典學領域時，華文圈的相關著作相當的貧乏。特別是亞歷山大死後到羅馬征服前這段“希臘化時代”，幾乎可以說任何專著都幾乎付之闕如，只能是附在整個古典希臘史下去談。最近這幾年，隨著人們開始重視這個主題，總算有作品如雨後春筍般地登場，甚至，在繁體書市也有了本書的出場來填補這段空白。

本書《征服的時代》是馬可孛羅在2021年引進，由英國Profile Books出版社與哈佛大學聯手打造的古代史書系。這套書我之前在亞馬遜網站搜書的時候有看到推薦，不過當時那時由於中文的都看不完了，也就只是留個心，沒想到一陣子後居然有台灣的出版社願意引進出版，真是讓人喜出望外。考慮到它是個系列五本作品，我就只是先收，等到今年出齊之後再一起閱讀(雖然它每一冊分開看並沒有影響)。


作者安傑羅．查尼歐提斯(Angelos Chaniotis)對我而言是相當陌生的名字，不過他在書的一開始就讓我印象深刻。主要是他對於自己作品即將描述的主題“希臘化時代”有些略為不同的詮釋。查尼歐提斯認為，一般傳統都把這個時代結束在奧古斯都對埃及的征服，可是他不這麼看，希臘文明隨著亞歷山大的遠征傳播開來，其影響力並沒有隨著羅馬人主導了地中海而消失，恰相反的，正如一些學者說的，「希臘文明反過來征服了羅馬」，查尼歐提斯在他的這本著作中，把這個時代結束在帝國中期，他認為那時，兩個文明已經合而為一，“希臘化”才不再做為一個獨立的“時代”存在。這是個有趣的觀點。畢竟文明是累積疊加而不是憑空產生，即便是今日，我們也可以看到很多希臘化時代的「影子」。

馬其頓的亞歷山大對人類歷史真正影響深遠的不是他那輝煌而短暫的戰功與帝國，而是某種程度上可以說促成了人類早期的一次“全球化”。希臘人跨出了自己的城邦，他們的移民把文化散播出去，姑且不予評價，但確實是一次大融合，幾乎可以說是後來的環地中海羅馬文明的先聲與奠基。

例如，希臘化時代的王權，有別於傳統的血緣繼承制，在亞歷山大的家族滅亡之後，就變成憑軍事上的成就與處理政務的能力來獲得黃袍加身的權利。當然，一旦權力穩固，他們很快的就開始建立王朝，努力以血緣繼承制邁進。只是說，一位沒有能力的君王，隨時都可能有挑戰者這也是殘忍的現實。這是不是我們於後來的羅馬帝國也能看到相似的情景？而王權轉化為同一個家族傳承，也同樣的會帶來成員彼此之間的鬥爭，王族一邊向民眾展示它們的相親相愛，卻又弔詭地上演各種殺戮戲碼，最樂此不疲的，莫過於埃及的托勒密家族。有意思的是，繼承者戰爭時代的諸國王的宮廷並沒有發展與建立一個東方式的官僚體系，儘管確實存在一批人來協助治理，或給予意見，但它們的頭銜通常都是“王室的親友”、“顧問”之類的非正式稱呼。從希臘化宮廷中，我們可以反觀出後來羅馬帝國從中借鑒了多少治理之術。

至於在這個時代，希臘城邦的自由終結在亞歷山大的父親腓力二世將他們征服之後。不過，接下來的各個國王為了有效的統治他們，還是假裝給予各城邦一定的自治權。作者舉了一個例子：從腓力五世要求一座城市按照他的意願立法的通信中，即可以看出端倪：「我強烈建議你們通過這項法律，因為這會給你們帶來很多的好處....」國王用了“建議”這個非命令式的詞句，但其強烈語氣又讓人不得不聽從，這也算是一種政治的藝術吧。

作者另外一個提到讓我覺得有趣的是關於社會的討論。希臘化時代社會的一個特徵就是，各城邦對於公民權的放寬，公民之間的流動性大增，且開始有邦際之間的“雙公民權”的現象，或者是互相照應給予保護的狀況。

階級流動上也較以往寬鬆，主要認定標準是財富，有錢就能有地位。至於怎麼向上爬，除了傳統的地產之外，越來越多職業也都能有機會攀登。例如，努力做學問當哲學家，就有機會成為達官顯要的顧問或“友人”，進而擠身上流。又或者能夠擁有特殊專長如數學家、天文學家、醫生等，就有機會獲得青睞。門檻最相對低的方法則是從軍，擔任傭兵，由於戰爭頻繁，各個國王在給予獎賞都相當慷慨，如果能夠平安倖存到退休，就有機會贏得土地等各種賞賜，榮歸故里也不是夢。這種狀況延續到了羅馬帝國時代，而且如果有幸認識皇帝，又身懷特殊技能，就可能階級翻轉。不然就是依靠當時的和平環境，積極從商致富。

這幾個面向上，都可以看出文明的傳承性。


總而言之，雖然本書討論的範圍很廣，但作者的寫法卻非常清晰易懂。查尼歐提斯重點敘述了主要的史實，然後清晰指出了希臘-波斯-羅馬之間是如何最終「纏結」在一塊(作者使用的詞語)，之後再開各個章節說明之中的社會、文化與宗教等各個層面的變化。比起純粹的描述，作者更喜歡舉例，而他的文筆流暢，是現下許多大眾歷史作家等級，做為一位學者，頗為了不起。至於翻譯，也是出色的完成了任務。深深地向大家推薦這部作品。

這些年，簡體書市終於也逐漸發現繼承者戰爭這段空白，慢慢推出了幾本專門著作，例如專述戰爭層面的《亞歷山大繼業者戰爭》(9787559441737)，偏通史的《王座上的幽靈》(9787520191999)、《裂土稱王》(9787522808451)跟《征服希腊》(9787522810546)，有興趣的，不妨繼續追著閱讀。

Ό,τι πληρέστερο θεωρώ στην ελληνική βιβλιογραφία σήμερα για την εν πολλοίς άγνωστη ελληνιστική εποχή. Το συνδύασα με το καλοκαιρινό μάθημα του mathesis και δεν το μετάνιωσα. Ο καθηγητής όχι μόνο παρουσιάζει αλλά ξεδιαλύνει πολλά πράγματα και μας εισάγει ταυτόχρονα και σε μια εποχή που επιλέγουμε να θεωρούμε παρακμής, βασισμένοι στην παραδοσιακή ιστοριογραφία του 19ου αιώνα, όταν ο αρχαιοελληνικός κόσμος αν δεν τελείωνε στη Χαιρώνεια ή στον θάνατο του Αλέξανδρου, το πολύ να πήγαινε ως την καταστροφή της Κορίνθου ή την προσάρτηση της Αιγύπτου στη Ρώμη. Όμως, ο Χανιώτης δεν το θέτει ως ζήτημα χρονικών ορίων, αλλά μελετά το υλικό μιας τεράστιας περιοχής φτάνοντας από τη Σικελία και τη Νότια Ιταλία μέχρι την Βακτριανή στα Ιμαλάια και στο Παμίρ, και σε ένα χρονικό εύρος που περιλαμβάνει την ακμή της Ρωμαϊκής Αυτοκρατορίας, τόσο συνδεδεμένης με το ελληνικό στοιχείο, όπου και οπότε υπάρχει μια σχέση δούναι και λαβείν. Με λόγο ακριβή και σωστό, ως προς τη μετάφραση, το βιβλίο διαβάζεται τόσο από τον ειδικό επιστήμονα αλλά κυρίως και σημαντικότερο, και από τον απλό αναγνώστη, που δεν έχει ειδικές γνώσεις, που θέλει να μάθει, να θυμηθεί, να πληροφορηθεί εν τέλει για μια εποχή που όλοι σχεδόν έχουμε συγκεχυμένη στο μυαλό μας.

This book is a concise overview of the Hellenistic period. He makes the case for a 'long' hellenistic period extending from Alexander to Hadrian. The author argues that the trends and developments that started with Alexander the Great's conquests did not end at Actium.

An intriguing opener which includes a reference to the opening passage in the Book of Maccabees about Alexander's conquests, goes on to paint, off the base of Alexander's conquests, a veritable picture of a broad, mini globalized world. Details of the nature of Greek politics, life and the ethos around the great changes of this period are explored all the way to the subsequent chaotic decades of initial Roman emergence and subsequent domination.
The quality of its scholarship and the scarcity of books-approachable ones- on this period, makes Dr Chianotis' book no doubt the greatest resource on the subject for the everyday reader.

Very interesting overview of the Hellenistic period from the conquests of Alexander the Great through the Wars of the Successors, the eventual transition of power to Rome, the rise of the Roman Emperors and all the way through to the reign of Hadrian. While I was very familiar with some parts of this history, there was far more discussed here of which I had at best a fragmented knowledge and a worst barely any at all. A little repetitive at times, otherwise a fascinating read.

Great book by the absolute expert in the field. Not for the frail at heart or time-poor readers, although weathered readers will lavish it and benefit from the undisputed accuracy and deep knowledge of the author. Massively interesting read.

Έμεινα πολύ ικανοποιημένος από το βιβλίο. Πολλές και χρήσιμες πληροφορίες για μια περίοδο άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα, χωρίς να σε μπερδεύει με περιττά. Εστιάζει τόσο στα ίδια τα ιστορικά γεγονότα, όσο και στις συνθήκες που επικρατούσαν, τρόπο και ποιότητα ζωής, αλλαγές λόγω των κατακτήσεων κα. Επίσης πολύ όμορφο εμφανισιακά και πολύ καλή ποιότητα, κάτι που δεν το βλέπεις συχνά πλέον.

Το βιβλίο του ιστορικού και μελετητή Άγγελου Χανιώτη, "Η εποχή των κατακτήσεων", αποτελεί μια εξαιρετική ανασκόπηση του ελληνικού κόσμου κατά την περίοδο από την άνοδο του Αλεξάνδρου του Μεγάλου μέχρι τη διάδοση του ελληνιστικού πολιτισμού υπό τον αυτοκράτορα Αδριανό.

Ένα από τα σημαντικότερα πλεονεκτήματα του βιβλίου είναι ο συνδυασμός λεπτομερούς ιστορικής ανάλυσης και συναρπαστικής αφήγησης, που καθιστούν το έργο προσιτό και ενδιαφέρον για ευρύ κοινό. Ο συγγραφέας αποδίδει με επιδεξιότητα την πολυπλοκότητα της εποχής, εστιάζοντας σε βασικά θέματα όπως οι στρατηγικές και οι πολιτικές εξελίξεις, οι πολιτιστικές αλληλεπιδράσεις και ο ρόλος των μεγάλων ηγετών.

Εντυπωσιακή είναι επίσης η τρόπος που αναδεικνύονται οι διαφορετικοί πολιτισμοί που συνυπήρξαν και αλληλεπιδρούσαν κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της ιστορικής περιόδου. Age of Conquests is about 500 odd years of Greek history from after the classical phase to the Roman empire. The book is well written and seems to be quite comprehensively researched.

As with most history books there are good parts (the military/political ones for me) and drab ones (socio cultural for me). However, your will walk away with a fairly good idea of what went on from Alexander to Hadrian in the Mediterranean.

One of the most striking things for me was what a profound impact just a few years of Alexander had on the world as we know it today. You can only wonder what would have happened if he had loved too 50 or 60 years of age.

One of the best features of Chaniotis' writing was that the work appears to be fairly unbiased and factual. Fir eg, while this is a Greek history, at no point does he seem to say that barbaric Romans conquered over cultured Greeks etc.

Overall, a very decent overview of the Greek world from that period. Not a must read, but definitely one too pick up if this sort of thing interests you. 3 stars from me.

A decent overview of the time period between Alexander's conquest and Hadrian. I enjoyed the way the book was split into different themes with the first section of the book being a general military political history of the period. With the second part focusing on civic life, public buildings position of women and slaves and religion.
I would have welcomed a more comprehensive account of the various cults and religions of the time period in this book, but the author managed to nonetheless pack a lot into a relatively short (400 pages) book.

De griek Angelos Chaniotis vertelt in dit boek het vaak vergeten verhaal van het Hellenisme, de periode na Alexanders veroveringen en vóór de opkomst van Rome in het Middellandse Zeegebied. Ook op academisch vlak is Hellenisme vaak het kneusje onder de classici. Chaniotis, die volledig zijn opleiding in Duitsland gevolgd heeft en dus behoort tot één van de meest uitmuntende academische tradities binnen de oudheidkunde, probeert dit recht te zetten met zijn Age of Conquests. Wie een liefhebber is van boeken over de oudheid zal zeker dit boek weten te appreciëren.

The reality here is that I'm still digesting this book, and will be doing so for awhile, but the author's argument that there is a "long" Hellenistic period horizon does seem valid. This is with the additional virtue that this is the most coherent overview I've ever seen about the doings of Alexander's "Successors," before Rome swept the board clean in points east of the Ionian Sea. Just give yourself a lot of time, as this is the sort of work that you'll be dipping into, as opposed to making a forced march.

A good book that talks about the Hellenistic world and how it's influence permeate everywhere today and at the same time giving a much clearer overview about what exactly went on. Such as the military history, to the politics and eventually to the social aspects of the Hellenistic world. Fascinating and a great read.

A truly excellent account of a fascinating period. Comprehensive, detailed, well written and engaging, I found it helped me understand this crazy complex period of rising and falling states, shifting alliances and bewildering lists of warlords. My only criticism is that the cultural information towards the back of the book is pretty damn dense. But otherwise would recommend.

Μετά από αυτό νομίζω πως θα μπορέσω να διαβάσω "από το πρωτότυπο" Πλούταρχο, Πολύβιο, αλλά και Λουκιανό και άλλους καταλαβαίνοντας σε ποιο χρονικό πλαίσιο γράφανε.

Ζηλεύω στην ιδέα ότι κάποιοι φοιτητές μπορεί να το έχουν για σύγγραμα μαθήματος.
