Therese Beharrie is a South African romance author of several acclaimed novels, including her One Day to Forever series. She takes pride in writing diverse characters and settings, and her books are often recommended for their heart and banter. She lives in Cape Town with her husband, her inspiration for every hero, and two adorable baby boys. You can find her on Twitter and Facebook or visit her at theresebeharrie.com.
I'm a big Therese fan but these books in particular with their 90s/00s paranormal romcom nods are really tickling me.
What a bonkers delight this story is with its ghostly makeout sessions and forced proximity/fake relationship and interdimensional theory, all grounded with that trademark Beharrie emotional depth. The sarcasm and banter is so fun but then you'll be slapped in the face with Deep Emotional Questions that make you feel very deeply for these characters.
Gemma is dealing with the discovery of her long-lost sister, the responsibility of caring for the ghost she accidentally turned solid (with her mouth), and the stress of trying not to fall on his mouth again. (She fails.) She's also a very Eve Brown sort of character which made her POV super fun.
Levi is dealing with the whole 'being a ghost' thing, but he also had so much personal growth to go through regarding his life back home, and an impossible choice to make that yanked my guts out and had me on the edge of my seat. Also, he's supposed to be helping Gemma with her sister issue, but she refuses to be saved and instead shows him he has a sister issue of his own... Oh, and he's a definite stern brunch daddy. We have a grumpy/sunshine ship, people!
Relatable realism meets spooky season whimsy. Love it!
I have to admit a Ghost in Shinning Armor is a cute story. About heroine who can see the dead and met with a handsome ghost. I do love Gemma and Levi. Both are loveable. It is just Miss Beharrie writing is bit off for me.
I have difficult time connecting with her story telling. Have to reread the page before over and over again to understand.
This starts off with a cute concept. Gemma can see and talk to ghosts, and if she acknowledges them in public they are visible to others.
Levi, who recently died, is offered a chance to come back to life if he helps Gemma with a problem she is having. If he doesn't succeed, he will cease to exist.
So, what is the problem? It appears to be that Gemma was adopted, and her parents only adopted her, and not her twin sister, and now she has found her, the sister. But she doesn't know how to tell her she is her sister. And she is a romance writer, so she starts stacking her.
And, she also kisses Levi on a bet, so he looks solid, and human to everyone else.
And gosh darn if they dont' spend half the book or more just moaning on and on about their problems.
And it is never explained how he is still a ghost if he is solid, or what.
And we never find out much about the alternative universe he comes from, other than there is no prejudice there?
And what is the whole point?
I swear I almost put the book down as a DNF, but I felt I had gotten that far, might as well go the whole way.
I barely care about Levi.
I barely care about Gemma.
I care about her writing sister, but just enough to know that if someone stalked me, and told me they were my sister I would probably slam the door in their face too.
Sorry, can recommend this. It just takes too long to get to the point. When it does, it was a good ending, but not worth slogging through the rest of the book.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This was such an interesting way to write about the choices we make to have or not have the life we want. Bravo to Therese Beharie for writing a complex and heavy topic with a level humor that didn't make me feel sad. You definitely have to read book 1 for some of the interactions to make sense.
I think if you're a people pleaser you will really connect with the internal struggle of Gemma and Levi. This was so present and I think where the book flourished. You get to see what that looks like in very different ways and how it ultimately impacts their relationships.
I do think there were a few pacing issues, which could have been partly trying to understand ghosts in human form but still a ghost. Also since Gemma could see ghosts, there were several popping in and out so I wasn't sure who was important to focus on. What role would they play in the overall plot. Though Jude was such a fiesty ghosts. It was subtle but their pronouns changed in just about every scene. Idk if I liked the positioned they put Levi in and you WILL have to be ok with the choice he made. For me there was an impossible one to make but aren't most big decisions.
Overall great banter, discussions on grief, adoption, sense of belonging, am I good enough, kids put in positions to be an adult before they should, responsibilities, friendship, love, and self love. It still feels unclear the status of Gaia and Gemma's relationship.

Listen. At this point, I just want to read everything the author writes. She is so incredibly talented. How talented? I was rooting for a living human and a ghost!!! Gemma is such a brilliantly beautiful person, sunshine in human form, always giving and caring and wanting to make others happy. Levi is grumpy as heck (did I mention I love grumpy/sunshine?!?) and trying to figure out how to help this stubborn but oddly endearing human so he can get back to his sister. I love him! I love her! I love them!! I really really hope the series continues!!
A heartfelt paranormal, fake dating romance perfect for fans of The dead romantics by Ashley Poston.
This story features Gemma, who has been able to see ghosts since she was a child. When she accidentally kisses Levi, a ghost sent to help her, he becomes visible to everyone and the two have to fake date to explain his presence. Naturally the forced proximity leads to feelings and the two have to figure out if they can have any kind of future together in real life.
The story also sees Gemma tracking down her twin sister, Gaia (from And they lived happily ever after). The two women were separated at birth and have lots of childhood trauma to work through. I thought this was well done with a perfect balance of romance and family drama with a fun paranormal element thrown in.
Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. I'm excited to see whose story is next in this series!
I am sooo sad I could not connect with this book. I LOVE the premise and even like the characters, but 25% in there was almost no story progression. Every other thought was sexual in nature and felt forced. If this book is meant to lusty in nature, than seeing them take some action rather than just hearing their thoughts over and over again would have been something to move the story forward.
In the end, it simply did not work for me. Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for the ARC of this!
Very cute, slightly paranormal romance. Perfect for if you want a romance with no actual scares that feels right for spooky season! I really liked the characters and their chemistry.
gemma and levi have both lost their sisters. gemma, when she was adopted and her sister wasn’t, and levi, when he died. but now, they both have a chance to get their sisters back. if levi helps gemma reunite with her sister, he gets a second chance at life. but as they get closer to each other and their goals, they realize they may have to do things they hadn’t originally planned.
this is my first book from the author and i’m definitely interested in reading more! i loved the paranormal aspect of this. there were also a lot of difficult decisions and conversations within this book that i thought were handled well.
I was going to write a whole review for this but I don’t want to give it that much energy. It just wasn’t good, sometimes to the point of being unreadable. And in 2023 can we all work on being more clear when a book is part of a series??? PLEASE, I don’t ask for much but I am asking for that.
I was provided with a digital ARC of this book thanks to the publishing house, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are completely my own.

TW: death, death of a brother, adoption, strained parents/daughter relationship, strained mother/son relationship, mentions of cheating
This book was such a surprise. The first part was quite slow and it got me a lot to get into the story, but I have to admit that beside that I enjoyed it so much.
This novel follows Gemma, a woman who can see ghosts, and Levi, the ghost sent to help her overcome some difficult situations. This is the premise, but of course stuff happens and feelings are involved. I really enjoyed the supernatural part of this romance. I have never read a contemporary romance with paranormal vibes, and now I'm obsessed. I can't wait to read more of them.
I also liked how the romance wasn't the only part of this book, the characters also have to deal with different family situations and how they impact their day-to-day life. Gemma and Levi were two very interesting main characters, they are so different but their personalities really complement each other and their banter was great to read.
I haven't read anything by Beharrie in the past but I'll surely get to more of her work in the future, such a fun read that I highly recommend!
I generally enjoy Therese Beharrie's romances but I was not fully on board with the first book in this series (the mix of contemporary with paranormal elements didn't work for me very well). Starting this book I had already met both MCs in book 1 and knew the hero is a ghost (but the heroine and other people could see him), so I hoped it all would work better for me. Sadly, i have to say it didn't. The ghost aspect didn't make sense for me and I found myself not caring about either of the MCs, so I just couldn't continue. It was the romance that carried me through in the first book and without it here, I saw no point in reading further.
A Ghost In Shining Armor tells the story of Gemma who can see ghosts and often helps them and Levi, the ghost that has been sent to help her. Gemma has always known that she was adopted, but has just recently discovered that she has a twin sister. This has thrown her life into turmoil and Levi has been sent to help.
I have always loved fantasy romance and this one did not disappoint. This was such a fun fast paced read. Therese Beharrie is a new to me author. I really liked her writing style and can't wait to get my hands on more.
Thank you, Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own
I never have been a fan of fantasy romance till know. A Ghost in Shining Armor tells the story of Gemma who is this wonderful sweet and caring human that can see ghosts . All capes are off when she goes out one night with her friends and ends up kissing a ghost (a hunk of a ghost). Levi is not just a guy she kissed because he has a mission to help reunite with her sister. Totally addictive, totally fast-paced and loveable characters. Recommend this gem.

3.0
Pretty standard, there’s nothing really sophisticated or outlandish about it - I would put it more along the lines of whacky but heartfelt. The plot is mediocre at best, the romance is flimsy, the message is confusing. I’m not sure how I really feel about this book, on one hand I enjoyed it cause the characters are great but they don’t seem to have any believability nor any sense of good morals, which makes it hard to root for them. Their chemistry is a little lacking as well, but that may be because I have been biased by another book that had off-the -charts chemistry and A Ghost in Shining Armour just couldn’t compare.
I liked Gemma and her internal struggle, it was relatable and it was written well. Levi… oh my dear Levi, you were done dirty. I understand that life is a choice and some choices would make you happier than others, I just wish the author would have made it convincing. There was no justification for Levi’s choice, and Gemma didn’t seem like the strongest motivator. These two really had NOTHING going for them - there were no stakes for the couple and they barely even knew each other, so it was just hard to be convinced in my opinion. I think Levi had higher stakes, and we should have seen his internal struggle throughout this and we were ROBBED of a truly amazing plot point that could have shaken the literary world but it didn’t.
I think things just fell flat with this book, and emotions could have been acknowledged more, experiences, thoughts and feelings could have been added. This book has no emotional core despite its heavy themes - and sadly that’s where it falls flat for me. More thought on the emotional weight of this book would have made this better.
This book is so cute. I wanted Gemma's story since reading And they Lived Happily Ever After (in that book, Gemma was quasi-stalking her newly discovered sister, the heroine of that book). In this book we see Gemma coming to terms with having a sister, with the secrecy from her parents, who she loves, and trying to build new, difference relationships after her family dynamic has been completely up-ended.
This parallel's her love interest's journey, new ghost Levi (who was sent to help Gemma, who can see ghosts, wither her crossing-over assistance duties while she deals with her stuff). He also has had massive family changes and has to build a new reality after changes.
They are lovely together. The supernatural romance is adorable and their emotional and romantic journeys are super satisfying. I absolutely adored it.
Thank you to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I’m usually not too keen on magic and ghosts and things like that, but I knew I would be in good hands with Therese Beharrie. I don’t think she can write a book I don’t like. It takes place more or less at the same time as the first book in the series, And They Lived Happily Ever After (also an excellent read obviously), and of course that means that we had already read some events from Gaia’s POV, but it didn’t feel repetitive at all. As always in Therese Beharrie’s books, the focus is on the characters and how they grow and figure out how to be together. And as always, it was done so well. Both Gemma and Levi have always lived their lives for others and it’s great to see them learn to choose themselves. The stakes for the romance were incredibly high and I’m so glad we had the epilogue to see how it all worked out. I absolutely adored this book and had tears in my eyes at some points.
*** I received an ARC through NetGalley in return for an honest review ***
I STRUGGLED with this story. Gemma was a bit annoying playing hot and cold with poor Levi who’s already dead and is socially awkward in the sense that his demeanor is soooooo blah.. everything he does is simply dispassionate and lack luster so to speak. It’s like being dead shut off all his emotions and he’s going through his “life” with Gemma on sort of auto pilot. And Gemma can’t figure crap out on WTH she wants and it’s soooooo irritating for someone who seems to be so headstrong and confident in the beginning. I didn’t connect with any characters and it felt flat for a romance or even a comedy.
I had a hard time connecting to this story until half way. It was a mistake to listen to this without starting with the first book.
Levi passed away and is in ghost form looking over his sister Hailey. Gemma has been seeing ghosts since she was 18 years old and now she can see Levi. They are brought into each others or it because they have unresolved issues besides their souls can be at peace.
I almost quit it several times. The last 1/3rd was much better but it wasn’t as engaging as I hoped for.
this book was worth it every second .No lying i fell in love with Levi who would not i mean .their love story one of the unique ones in a weird yet beautiful way. There had to face and make some hard decisions on the way but i would not have had it any other way .Such a beautiful story,Much thanks and appreciation to the author
Thank you Kensington Books for my copy. All thoughts are my own!
While I’m not a huge high fantasy reader, I do love a little Romantasy, a little urban fantasy from time to time. I grew up lusting over Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and devouring The Mediator series by Meg Cabot. I ate up the Twilight series. I’m not stranger to paranormal elements with my Romance. So I was super excited when i read the synopsis of A Ghost in Shining Armor!
It’s a cute, easy read that is perfect for a cozy fall day. At just 320 pages, you can easily read it in a single sitting over a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning. It’s fun for spooky season but not Halloween focused at all.

What I Liked:
The Concept—I LOVE The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite shows. Therefore, a love a little forbidden Romance between the living and the undead.
The Characters—I really liked the characters individually! I thought they were fun and I was excited to take a walk in their shoes.
What Didn’t Work:
The Chemistry—Things felt a little forced between them. There was something missing, like a spark.
The Pacing—That same spark was lacking in the pacing for me. I couldn’t get into a good reading groove.
Character Authenticity: 3/5 Spice Rating: 1.5/5 Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Despite not necessarily disliking this title, I did find myself forcing myself through it. It wasn’t entirely what I had expected based on the premise, which I was very excited for. Paranormal rom-coms are very fascinating to me, and I love the creative mix of genres and inherent angst that comes with the tangible separation between the leads. All of these things were the fixings of a great romance, but some extra additions to the plot gave me a pause. Between Levi’s alternate dimension, guardian ghosts, and an adoption side plot, it felt like there was a lot going on and the rules of the universe became a little convoluted in ways that felt unnecessary. Perhaps it was going into the story without having read the previous instalment— which was the unfortunate result of having no idea it existed— that lead to A Ghost in Shining Armour feeling somewhat incomplete, but I can’t say the discovery of its predecessor has me jumping to read it. I found myself hoping it would take itself more seriously. Levi’s death, for example, had the potential to be an emotionally impactful reveal that was instead reduced to a second hand embarrassment inducing joke that I didn’t feel quite landed. It’s quite unfortunate that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped I would, because I really did have high hopes for this book. I will say that the development of both characters, showcased through a shifting dual perspective, was done very well. Both characters were relatable and realistically flawed, and their growth as people was given as much as if not more focus than the romantic arc between the two. The insta lust was a bit grating, especially given that there was little to no payoff. I simply struggled with the believability of the romance and plot entirely, the situations the characters found themselves in often outlandish and embarrassing without dedicating any time to fixing these holes that they (mostly Gemma) dug for themselves. The ending fell kind of flat and felt rather anticlimactic— the whole “true love was the answer all along” reveal felt like a major cop out, somehow managing to be unexpected yet predictable at once. Overall, I can’t help but feel like I spent the whole book waiting for it to begin. I had really hoped to like it, but something was just off. So much was either left unresolved or wrapped up too neatly, and it seemed like much of the conflicts could have been solved far earlier than they were in a much more satisfying way.
I adored this book - very much Meg Cabot The Mediator series vibes but like, an adult romance.
It was such an interesting take on the afterlife & the multiverse, and I really enjoyed the blend of contemporary and paranormal elements. Some people will find it a little 'insta-love' as there was a kiss and definite attraction early on, but personally I really enjoyed this and felt like it was just attraction, emotions developed as the plot and story evolved. Gemma's inner monologue was so funny - I think some readers will struggle to relate to her as she's so chaotic and basically having a breakdown, but personally I loved her and found her super relatable. And the way Gemma spoke about people needing things from her but never giving her the same energy? Wow, I felt that. Levi was just so gone for her and it was super sweet. I really enjoyed them together, but I feel like we could have done with some more scenes that were less about pushing the plot forward and more about developing their relationship, as at times it did feel it was moving a little fast.
I did feel that sometimes scenes and dialogue jumped a bit erratically leaving me a little confused, and that the ending felt a bit abrupt and a little unresolved (what happened to Haley and his old life??). But that epilogue?! Are we getting a Haley book next?? I'm so confused what is happening GIVE ME MORE!!
(I would also love a Lacey and Chet book? And more from Jude/them? Soooooo much more to explore in this world!!)
My second paranormal romance from the author, and I honestly wish it was better than the first.
The first half of the book was much more promising and exciting because it contained all of the book's interesting aspects, so you could say I was expecting more in the second half after being so impressed in the first.
Unfortunately, the inconsistency of the writing begins in the second half. With how things unfolded there, I'd say the characters and writing became a little bland to me.
Although the characters are entertaining and I can tell that the chemistry exists, I would say that these two fell short in the second half, let alone in terms of growth. The romance in the second half felt forced, with the constant back and forth of their moments rather than moving forward.
Overall, I wish the second half had continued to be good, but it didn't. However, the concept remains intriguing, so 3 ⭐
What's the plan when you find out you can see ghosts, but you don't realise you might just be falling in love with one? That's Gemma's conundrum. She's known about her ability for a while and spent a few years helping hapless spirits find their way. Then she meets Levi. Except, things are a bit different with him because he's been sent to help her, too... Gemma is a happy soul, with her worries that she carries hidden away. Levi is a grump. He didn't want to die when he did, and he had a chance to change his fate... But things happen. You can never anticipate what your feelings will do. An enjoyable paranormal romance read that is not filled with spooky stuff but rather more about emotions. Many thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for an ARC.

I am not even an entire chapter, and this book has me smiling. Gemma is a human who can see Ghost Levi enters her life.
Levi needs Gemma's help to get back to his life. He wants to help her get to know her sister.
As the story progresses, we see a slow-burn romance between Gemma and Levi. The book's pacing slowed down for me a lot near the end. It's an excellent sweet book and a canny little read.
