This is the third book of the author's that I've read, though it's my first review for her. Also, as I was reading this, it had been a while (& many books in between) that I didn't realize that I had actually read book 1 in the series. I was wondering why the secondary characters & situation sounded familiar until I logged onto goodreads & saw the information 😂 Although this is book 4 in the series, you don't have to read the others first - though of course it'll add familiarity for the secondary characters. While there were things that I found weak, there was enough for me to enjoy this quick holiday story.
Because of a misunderstanding, Jack leaves for Doctors Without Borders in Africa & Stella is left heartbroken & pregnant. When Jack left, he not only lost contact with Stella but with his family members as well. Later, we do learn that there is a good excuse for him losing contact with his family. Stella only had her mom to rely on as she kept the secret of Luna's parenthood a secret from Jack's family out of fear of having a custody battle ,but there was really no need to worry about that since Jack's family were all kind towards Stella & Luna. Though Jack & Stella spent years apart, they never got over each other & it was very easy for them to pick up where they left off.
Neither Stella or Jack are strong & impressionable characters but I don't dislike them, though I understand why others would. Stella tries her best for her mother, Luna, & bakery. I do think she made things tough on herself by not telling Jack's family about Luna & getting more support but I do understand that she was swayed by her mother into thinking of protecting herself & Luna. As for Jack, his misunderstanding & heartbreak is understandable but his reaction to it, especially because he's supposed to be Stella's best friend as well & know her, is disappointing. However, during their time apart, he had regrets, thought of her, & didn't date anyone else so at least he has that in his favor.
I do think that the reason for their breakup was foolish, like Jack didn't even bother actually talking to her to clear up the misunderstanding. & the way it happened was too fast it didn't leave you feeling sadness for them or anything, except maybe annoyance at both of them. However, it did show that neither Jack, nor her, were ready for more commitment at that time. They are only reunited towards the end of the story so I would've liked to see more chapters of them exploring their feelings once again but with the time spent apart, & what Jack went through, you may just want to be together already - if only for Luna's sake or because you know that they never stopped loving each other. I also liked his parents, especially his dad who made me chuckle, & his sisters. I do plan to read their stories as well.
