One of the real ones

This isn't a rehash of someone else's work. Jim Cobb tells you how to still be standing after the smoke clears. I've been trying to get ready for some time now and I have had to rethink some of my set in stone ideas after reading this book. He doesn't just tell you do this and don't do that, he explains the good and bad. His logic and facts are unassailable. I know I am better prepared for having read this book. You would do well to read it too.

more pragmatic & realistic than other guides… doesn’t encourage consumerism & is focused on slowly preparing yourself, which is more healthier

3.5 stars. An absolute great jumping off point and intro to prepping. I took notes on things to buy and do further research on. It also inspired me to join a Facebook group which I feel will give me way more info and support going forward.

A good resource and overview of a broad range of prepping topics. At this stage of my "prepper" life I didn't learn much that was new, but it's convenient having it all in one place. I am confident I will refer back to this one.

Also, it has an excellent list of books/references at the end for digging into more detail on some key topics. Love that.

Very similar to other survival preparation books with a catchy title.

I learned some additional facts:

How to use a portable shower.
MRE's cause constipation.
A knife and a lighter and a water filter will prove quite necessary.

This is a very well-done, straightforward, and easy to read prepping/disaster guide. It’s always best to be prepared for anything, and this book walks the reader through various scenarios. Some of the advice is common sense, yes, but a lot of people lack basic common sense. I also liked that this guide had some info on conflict management, potential hostile situations, and compromise - as interpersonal skills are extremely important in any stressful scenario.

Horrible Formatting in Kindle

Overall, I think Jim Cobb is a very good author. My complaint is with the publisher’s delivery of this book. The Kindle version is Print Replica - and as with almost all Print Replica books, they are nearly impossible to read with any tablet with a screen less than 12.4 inches. Buy the print version instead.

I read this in one sitting because so much of the book is, bizarrely, made up of random stock photos. Obvious padding. There are some useful tidbits here, and I think this could be a good “very first disaster prep book ever” but not the most helpful. I got this from the library because I live in a big city, but I didn’t find that it focused on urban settings all that much.

If you looking for the “the government is coming for your guns, hid out in the mountains, set traps and live off the grid” kind of prepping, this is the wrong book for you. This is the suburban, dad wants logical tips to keep his family safe and feel prepared, kind of prepping.

Scarily practical and yet I still feel unsure about how much you can actually prepare.
