I love Jennifer Spreadman's books. She writes from her heart. Whether she's spinning a tale about an Amish family or a Mennonite family, she researches and presents so authentically how the community works.
A Secret Christmas has a little bit of everything that makes a great Christmas story. Long lost loves being reunited, a discouraged heart finding the true meaning of life and lots of hugs and kisses.
This book shouldn't be taken lightly, it may be a simple story but it holds a great truth. Treat yourself or give it to someone who is struggling to find peace in their lives. I highly recommend it!
This is a wonderful book. It made me feel so very good when l read it. I felt joy and happiness coming from all the characters. I made me feel like I was there with them.

Pennsylvania, Early December Joseph Bender’s head shot up at the piercing scream that ricocheted through the air. Was that Mary? He immediately dropped the lead line to his mare and bolted toward the house. “Joe? What’s wrong?” Harvey meandered out of the barn, his expression light as usual but a hint of concern manifested in his eyes. was Mary who just screamed.” He threw the screen door open and rushed inside. Moisture gathered in his palms and an uneasiness settled in the pit of his stomach as the door slammed shut behind him. “Anna?” He entered the kitchen. His wife was nowhere in sight. He ran to young Mary’s bedroom but found it empty. “Anna? Where are you?” “I’m in here. In the bathroom.” The distress in her voice caused his heart to lurch. He poked his head through the bathroom door and his gaze met his wife’s. “What’s going on, Schatzi? Why was Mary screaming?” “I don’t know if she had a nightmare or if it was because of her fever. She’s been a little out of sorts since we returned from her doctor visit, but nothing like now. She feels pretty hot.” Joe came close and touched the back of his hand to his daughter’s forehead. His heart felt like melted wax when he noticed Mary’s lethargic countenance, a stark contrast from her normal happy extroverted self. “You’re right, she’s burning up.” Did Anna recognize the worry his tone conveyed? He kneeled next to the bathtub, reached into the cool water surrounding Mary, dipped a washcloth into it, and then placed it on Mary’s forehead. “Does that feel better, liebling?” Mary attempted to smile and speak but all that passed her lips was a groan. “Did you check her temperature?” He frowned. Anna shook her head. “Not since earlier this morning. It was a hundred and one then. The thermometer is in Mary’s room on her dresser.” He briefly squeezed Anna’s hand, communicating to his wife that everything would be alright. He just wished his heart felt the same confidence his action exuded. “I’ll get it.” Joe turned toward the bedroom and silently pleaded with God on Mary’s behalf. Please don’t take her yet, Lord. Five years isn’t long enough. We can’t lose her. You know how much Anna and I love her. Tears were rare for him, but once in a while he couldn’t help their formation. This was one of those times. He shoved the tear away with the pad of his thumb. He couldn’t let Anna or the children see his distress—they needed his strength, his leadership. He took a cleansing breath and stepped back into the bathroom. He handed the thermometer to Anna. “Where are the kinner?” “They’re napping.” She held the thermometer under Mary’s tongue. “I’m surprised Mary’s scream didn’t awaken them.” “You know they can sleep through anything.” She pulled the thermometer out of Mary’s mouth and frowned. “What? What is it?” “A hundred and four. I didn’t expect it to still be so high. She’s been in the cool water for almost ten minutes now.” She brought a cup of water to Mary’s mouth. “Drink, lieb.” Their daughter did as told, but Joseph could see she was Joe shook his head. “I don’t know, Harv. But I’m certain that was Mary who just screamed.” He threw the screen door open and rushed inside. Why was Mary screaming?” I highly recommend reading. A SECRET CHRISTMAS by J.E.B. Jennifer Spredemann has given us a delightful story in her book, A Christmas Secret.
Jennifer uses this story to share the plan of salvation with her readers in her special, unique writing style.
The characters, Joseph and Anna Bender, Candace Dixon, Taylor Young, Harvey, Maddie and a special little girl named, Mary are so well described. They become just like part of your family. They are realistic and they seem to have real emotion and feelings.
The setting of this story, in Amish country with both English and Amish friends, only adds to the appeal of the story.
I realize it is a Christmas setting story, but this only adds to its appeal and interest. It is an any season read.
When Candance discovers that her father maybe in Pennsylvania she knows that she has to try to find him. Harv can’t believe it when he finds out who she is. Watching these two become close and get to know each other is truly amazing. Taylor is truly a wonderful person. The way he is always helping Joe and his family is really special. The characters in this book are all very special inspirational people who you will enjoy reading about. Mary is like a little angel she is so special. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could. You will feel God working throughout this wonderful book.
This was the first book I've read by this author, and I very much enjoyed it.
A widow & wedding planner from California discovers that her father (whom she thought had died in Vietnam) might be still alive in Pennsylvania. A wedding she's working just before Christmas is near there, so she adds a few extra days to the trip so she can try to find him. She does find him - and a whole lot more.
A wonderful story of love and forgiveness for several characters looking grid a meaningful life. Great characters and melding Amish and Englischers together. I was educated on herbal medicine and why it works so well in healing and recommend this book to anyone interested in that as well as those looking for meaning missing from their life.
It was a very good book to read, a little heavy on the religion part, but I enjoyed the reunion of a father and daughter and the healing of little Mary, it was hard reading the part of Danita the herbalist and what she said about cancer and chemo, after my husband dying of cancer, nobody offered herbs All Jennifer Spredermann books are worth reading
An easy read. Candace, an adopted woman, finds her father, who never knew about her. In getting to know him, she meets Taylor, who like her, is widowed. As she gets to know her dad, who lives with an Amish family, she also gets to know Taylor and finds out why he is more co tent than she. God works in wonderful ways through many new friends to change her life for the better
This read covers inspirational situations showing how lives were changed by the Savior and how they showed His love in many ways. The Savior was truly the reason of their Christmas celebration. Also an amazing announcement stunned those who gathered for the celebration! See what this amazing read is all about!!
A Secret Christmas is a love-filled book involving a family of heart members, even though not biologically connected. One of the younger Amish members, Mary has the childlike faith Jesus said we should all have. True selflessness and servanthood drives the individuals, be they Amish or Englisch.
Don’t let the title stop you from reading this book in any season
Author J.E.B. Spredemann hits the mark for excellence in writing an excellent tale. The interweaving of characters from different believing non-beliving backgrounds will keep you reading into the night. Well done, well written Christian book.
Very interesting story line. I had sort of figured it out, but at times I was proven wrong. Loved the fact that Candace found her dad. And that Mary survived. Can't wait to read the rest of this series.
This is a very good read. So many times we read about the Amish not truly knowing Jesus as their savior. It does my heart God to know there are those that truly know Him. Enjoy and God bless.
Loved the characters in this story. They seemed so real. A great Amish Christmas story with a unique plot. I know that this book is one I will recommend to others.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It took place in the Amish community in Pennsylvania, a place I used to enjoy visiting. They had no problem communicating Jesus to anyone who they knew. And that's a good way to live. They lived Jesus in their lives.
This is the first book I've read by this author. I enjoyed it very much because Candace finds faith after finding her biological father & also finds Taylor whom she comes to love. Also, there is an adorable little girl that captured my heart.
These authors write superb Amish fiction. I loved this wonderful story. Well written and so uplifting. I highly recommend absolutely anything these authors write.
This was a totally different kind of Amish book, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the presentation, the characters, and the outcome. In this day of unpleasant news, it was nice to pick up a book that was uplifting.
