Lauren can't believe she's escaped her old life in London for a new start with her partner, Paul, and his two young children. Haunted by her past, Lauren knows how lucky she is: a dream home, a ready-made family. And she also knows how much she could lose.
But as Lauren struggles to adjust to motherhood, her fears grow. She'll never live up to the ghost of Paul's perfect wife, or help him forget his grief over her tragic death. And as village rumours begin to swirl about their house in the woods, Lauren feels ever more isolated - despite Paul's reassurances. She wants to trust Paul - she owes him everything - but how can she, when she can barely trust herself?
It took me a little while to get into this book but then it got really good. Lauren was recovering from a terrible accident. While her body had largely healed she was still suffering from amnesia and mental trauma. Psychotherapist Paul Bloom starts to work intensively with Lauren to heal her fractured mind. They become close and she eventually moves in with him and his two children - Margo (4 years old) and her brother Jesse (5 years old). Paul’s former wife, the sainted Emma, died of cancer a couple of years ago. Lauren feels like has found her perfect family although they are not yet married (well, it’s….complicated).
One day, after they have been together for 7 months, Paul announces a wonderful opportunity. Some friends of his who own a beautiful, large house on acres in the country have taken a posting overseas and have offered him to stay in the house for 12 months rent free. At first it all seems wonderful indeed but Lauren soon feels isolated and claustrophobic. There’s really nowhere to go within walking distance and Paul is always wondering where she is when she’s not at home. It’s not hard to work out this is a classic case of gaslighting. You get this right at the start. But while Margo seems unaffected, Jesse’s behaviour becomes quite concerning but Paul insists there is nothing time won’t resolve.
I can’t say much more without spoilers but clearly things are not as they seem! In fact they are much, much worse. Although Paul doesn’t beat Lauren, the psychological damage he inflicts is extensive until, she doesn’t know if she can trust herself anymore. And what did actually happen to his first wife? Lauren was such a gutsy character, determined to get to the truth. Jesse stole my heart though as he was clearly conflicted about, well, pretty much everything. Paul was the classic narcissistic controlling manipulative so-and-so gosh he reminds me of somebody! Let’s not go there now though.
This story was quite disturbing in that I think this level of coercive control is not unusual and it’s a salutary reminder of how insidious this can be. Watch your backs ladies and, I suppose, some men too! Many thanks to Netgalley and Quercus Books for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
Paul and Lauren, along with Paul’s young children Margot and Jesse are moving to the countryside. They’ve not known each other long, in fact less than a year and Lauren is tingling with happiness and anticipation at the new beginning in the impressive architect designed house, deep in the heart of rural England. However, “she“ hangs over her like a dark cloud obscuring the sun, judging her, ‘she’ being Paul’s deceased first wife, Emma.
The book starts really strongly with some unsettling signs and a number of things to puzzle over and get the grey matter going! It’s hard to get a handle on Paul as he seems very erratic and exhibits some strange, surreptitious behaviour which is intriguing. The biggest concern and some of the most disturbing aspects of the book come from Jesse, whose behaviour demonstrates that he is clearly struggling. This is a very strong aspect of the book and you really feel for the little boy. Margot is a cute foil to Jesse and this makes his unsettling behaviour really stand out.
The author conveys a strong sense of mystery, suspicion piles on top of suspicion, there is some truth twisting and coercive control and manipulation and you feel Lauren’s confusion and her attempts to disseminate truth from lies and her tension is palpable. The claustrophobic atmosphere in the house and grounds adds to the tension with at times a feeling of menace hanging over it .
Initially, I’m not so keen on the second half as I question it’s point especially as I’m enjoying the first half so much but I should’ve had faith, the end twist is so unexpected and one you do not see coming. It’s definitely very unpredictable. However, clever though it is you do need to suspend some disbelief!
Overall, the author can construct a good, well paced mystery thriller with well rounded characters. .
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Quercus Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review
Paul and Lauren, along with Paul's young children Margo three and Jesse four are moving to the countryside. They have only known each other for a year and Lauren is excited to start a new life in an impressive architect designed house.
Lauren had been involved in an accident, she was referred to psychotherapist Paul as she was suffering with amnesia and mental trauma. They slowly become close and she eventually moves in with him.
Lauren struggles to adjust to motherhood and her fears grow that she will never live up to the ghost of Paul's first wife or that Paul will never get over the grief of his wife's tragic death.
Things are not as they seem and this story will get worse and things are about to get very creepy.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Well I'll be damned! That super twist at the end was seriously fu*King mind-blowing!!! I definitely didn't expect that geez!!!! & just for that ending alone you need to read this book!
That's without the super characters who I was totally praying for to get through the tough time to kick arse back to see through the cloud!
I've not come across a story like it, Emily's idea is completely original and would totally make a sh*t hot movie or better still a TV series because those Plot twists would totes have viewers hooked!!!
Defo my number 1 read this year I reckon! Thanks Netgalley & Quercus for the copy 🙏 AdPr product.
I was a bit slow to get into this one, it started to unravel more around half way thru. I did think I had most of the plot figured out so was quite surprised and pleased with the ending although I think there could of been a liitle more explanation to it. Overall a good bit of suspense but just a bit slow and repetitive in parts. Thanks to Netgalley for the Arc.
Lauren and Paul are moving to the country, for a fresh start with his two children. The death of his wife has had a lasting impact but finally, they feel like things are moving forward. But as the story goes along, we start to see some red flags. Odd things begin to happen and while one of the children adores her, the other seems so troubled.
I was drawn into this one immediately with the eerie setting and while I had no idea where it was heading, I loved the intrigue created by the author. I did suspect what was happening towards the end but it was still an enjoyable domestic suspense.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Quercus Books for this gifted review copy.
Set against the backdrop of a 'normal' life, this story simmers with foreboding and menace. The build-up to the ending is perfectly paced and executed. A highly recommended read for lovers of dark domestic noir thrillers. 5 stars from me.
I’m going against the grain with so many 5 star reviews. The book was silly, unrealistic and dragged on forever. By the end, I wouldn’t have cared if everyone was killed off…would have been just as satisfying.
‘He gave her everything. But can she trust him?’ - cover tag line. My thanks to Quercus Books for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘What She Left Behind’ by Emily Freud and for an invitation to take part in the publication week blog tour.
This was quite a ride! A cleverly crafted domestic noir that delivered on its promises. I read it in a single day as once started, I couldn’t put it down.
Given its nature I would suggest reading ‘cold’ for maximum impact. So just brief plot details to set the scene.
Following her recovery from a devastating accident Lauren is excited to be leaving London with her new partner, Paul, and his two young children, Jessie and Margo. Their destination is a dream glass house located in a woodland that has been lent to Paul by some friends.
Lauren met widower Paul when she was at her most vulnerable. Becoming part of a ready-made family seems like a second chance, her happily ever after. Yet when she begins to hear rumours about past events at the house and Paul’s behaviour becomes increasingly concerning, she starts to feel that her dream is turning into a nightmare.
In Part Two the focus moves to another woman, Eliza, who has moved into a familiar glass house with Richard, her husband, and their children. In Part Three the narrative alternates between Lauren and Eliza, with the shift indicated at the opening of each chapter. Part Four returns to Lauren’s perspective.
Overall, I enjoyed this very much. I had been impressed with Emily Freud’s debut, ‘My Best Friend’s Secret’. Now with ‘What She Left Behind’, I felt that she demonstrated her understanding of the elements that make for an addictive domestic noir/psychological thriller.
This is an excellent read and a really good representation of how gaslighting and abuse can affect a victim and also the strategies they can use to maintain control.
Paul is deeply manipulative and takes it to the extreme, the way that he used Lauren’s memory loss to make her feel like an unfit parent is so evil and he used the love she had for her children against her. He also created an unattainable utopia (Emma) that Lauren had no choice but to compare herself to, he also moved slowly isolating her from her friends and family carefully pushing the boundaries further and further to see what he could get away with
Lauren’s character is also really interesting, she is someone that you feel bad for at the very start even before you know anything like the full extent of what she is going through. You feel the love that she has for the children even when she believes herself to be an outsider and her only aim is to give them a good childhood and to try and soften the blow of losing “Emma”.
The Eliza sections are excellent as well, the way that Richard’s abuse slowly seeps through and how he gets more and more extreme. I also feel it was explained well why victims of abuse find it so difficult to leave, often the perpetrator will have cut off lots of avenues and created a scenario where the victim is reliant on the abuser as well as the use of emotional manipulation to make them believe things can’t improve
I was also impressed by the ending, the idea of Eliza and Lauren been the same person could have easily felt contrived or like it came out of nowhere but looking back the book does a great job at tying the narratives together in way that it feels natural but still unexpected

Ok so I’ll be honest I find thrillers and horrors very hit and miss . Mostly miss , sadly. But this , this was special . This was a hit of epic proportions. The kind of book you stay up until the early hours reading as it’s impossible to put down. I even had a nightmare that I was in the story it hooked me that much !!
The story and characters are so vivid and the writing is phenomenal. This is my first read from Emily freud but it certainly will not be the last !
I really don’t want to give away any spoilers whatsoever but I promise you this should be the only thriller / mystery you buy this year!
Thank you NetGalley, Quercus Books and Emily Freud for letting me read "What She Left Behind" in exchange for an honest review.
It’s such a well thought out domestic thriller, I was absolutely shook reading it🫣😳😨 The main character Lauren moves to the countryside with his new partner Paul and his new children, after a short time things aren’t really what they seem. It’s legit another one of those books that I could imagine happening in real life👀
I went into this book blind, it’s such a page turner and I read it over the last 2 days, I couldn’t put it down!
It’s definitely creepy in parts, I did have a inkling of what direction What She Left Behind might go in but that didn’t take away from the book at all. I really enjoyed seeing everything unfold throughout the book📖
I’m glad my first read of September was such a good thriller, I know after reading this I’m 100% going to pick up Emily’s debut novel My Best Friend’s Secret asap📚
This is a psychological thriller about the coercive control in relationships. There is an immediate and underlying sense of foreboding and mounting dread from the moment Lauren and Paul arrive at the glass house in the woods. The isolated setting creates an evocative atmosphere of unease and anxiousness. As the story unfolds, tension mounts and it's clear that something malevolent is at play.
The storyline was dark, menacing, suspenseful and chilling with a shocking twist at the end.
I was completely absorbed, and immersed in this book from start to finish. I devoured it at every opportunity and easily finished it in a couple of days.
This was a really enjoyable and addictive psychological thriller that kept me engaged throughout.
Thank you to Netgalley, Quercus Books and Emily Freud for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Ugh! This book had so much premise to be such a great book, but I don’t know whether it was the author or maybe im just so used to thriller twists, but I guessed what was happening within 15% of the book and was proven right. So it felt quite meh when it came to the reveal. What I can say is the author did a stupendous job with really making us reader feel so gaslighted by the main male character. You could honestly feel the emotional torture and abuse that the female protagonist was going through. Overall it was ok.
4.5✨ holy shit, this book was insane. i would’ve NEVER expected that eliza and lauren are the same people??? that was baffling to me, and the fact that paul/richard were behind everything is crazy. and the poor little kiddos, it’s such a beautiful story in the end where eliza gets to keep the kids and falls in love again and trusts herself more than anyone else. but this story messed up my brain, like it was crazy, it took some time to get into the book but by the end, i was IN IT. super good book, i recommend

I enjoyed this, but it felt quite similar to another book I’ve read recently, so the impact was slightly less ‘there’ for me. I enjoyed the dual character perspective and the dynamic between the other characters did create tension and I was ready for the wrap up and to find out what had been happening, but that then felt really quick and like all the strands were just narrated back, rather than being unpicked in a way I would have found more enjoyable. Overall, it was a nice easy and tense read!
This was such a good domestic/psychological thriller that I didn’t want to put down. It was fast-paced and the character development was perfect. I enjoyed how the book was divided in parts, which all came together and made sense. I was so engaged and the twists were 🤌🏼chefs kiss. Also a big F U to Paul. I can often guess how a book is going to play out and I have to admit that I was way off for this one.
Lauren, her partner Paul and his two young children are moving from the city to the ‘glass house’ deep in the English countryside. Lauren thinks this is exactly what she needs, fresh air, a ready made family to call her own and a chance to start again after her accident.
The book is made up of four parts, once you get to part three it all comes together and I worked out what was going to happen in the end. This was a quick read that I finished over two days.
⭐️ 4.75/5 (rounded up to 5⭐️) 📚 54/36 🗂 Psychological Thriller ✅ UK based ✅ I felt uncertain/on edge the whole time ✅ Would make a great tv series 😩 I half guessed the ending 📆 July 2022 *Publication Date - 1st September 2022
I received this eARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley and Quercus Books!
I have no words, this book was amazing from beginning to end. As a romance reader this is far from my normal genre but I LOVED it. The twists, the suspense, I felt like I was the one investigating this strange family. 5 out of 5, I want more!
The MIND GAMES were insane!! I didn’t start piercing the story until part 2 and then I was hooked. It started off a little bit slow and confusing but damn once it picked up, I could not put it down!
Really recommend if you’re in the mind for a proper psychological thriller!
This was an exciting psychological thriller. Even though the plot got fairly obvious earlier than expected - it did not spoil the thrill of the story. Rather, it fuelled the connection to the main character. I really enjoyed this, but it wasn't mindblowing.
I like my chick lit mysteries, but this one was not enjoyable. I do enjoy reading about bad men doing bad things to women and then getting their comeuppance. I also think it’s helpful for women to read books like these so they can recognize what abuse is and how subtly it can start. But, the chapters with Eliza started to turn into torture porn. It was just too much for too long. I had to start skimming just so I could finish it.
