Reading this 11th installment of The Secret Explorers series for young readers makes me curious about the first 10. In “The Haunted Castle” episode the Gustavo and Kiki, the History and Engineering Explorers are sent back in time to a medieval castle and solve the mystery of green and glowing horned ghost-knight and keep a cranky prince from taking up residence and making life difficult for current residents. As the 125 pg adventure moves briskly along, students in grades 2-4 will pick up tidbits of learning from the time period and will likely pick up on clues to who the ghost is, possibly solving the mystery before the unveiling. Periodic black and white sketches add to the overall enjoyment and for those who want to know more, author SJ King includes a glossary and a fully illustrated appendix of additional information about the politics and activities of the time period. Being a DK Kids publication, care-givers can be assured that facts have been verified. Great series for those who enjoy Magic Treehouse.
Thanks for sending me a finished copy for review, Amazon Vine.
The Secret Explorers is a series of children's books that follow a group of eight kids from across the world. Each kid is an expert in a subject that they must use on missions to solve mysteries and problems. Through these missions, the book teaches kids about concepts and history. In a way, it is similar to The Magic Tree House series of books.
For this book, The Secret Explorers and the Haunted Castle sees two of the Secret Explorers, Gustavo and Kiki, travel to the Middle Ages to help solve a castle's ghost problem.
The book is fun. It is written simply for its target audience. It gets quickly into the plot and moves at a constant pace and many moments to help teach the reader about the Middle Ages, along with many illustrations to help visualize the scenes. There is even a glossary and additional information about the Middle Ages at the end of the book for kids.
Really, I only had one problem with the story. Kiki, for the majority of the story, came off as only being there for Gustavo to explain stuff regarding the Middle Ages. Kiki only gets one moment where her expertise gets to be used and then gets pushed back to the background.
The Secret Explorers head for a medieval castle in this adventure. They help the Count and Countess save their people and castle from the king's nasty brother. As always, the series blends informative text with a full story.
This is the eleventh book of The Secret Explorers Series. Two of the explorers are sent back in time to help a Count and Countess save their home from the bad Prince.
