One human. One immortal. Will their alliance save the kingdom, or will their forbidden love be a death sentence?

When Cassia seeks out a Hesperine, he could end her mortal life in a heartbeat. But she has no fear of his magic or his fangs. She knows the real monster is the human king, her father. If he finds out she’s bargaining with his enemy, he’ll send her to the executioner.

As a Hesperine diplomat, Lio must negotiate with mortals who hate him. Cassia is different, but politics aren't why she captivates the gentle immortal. He wants more than her blood, and if he can’t resist the temptation, he’ll provoke the war he's trying to prevent.

Blood and Ash fans will love this slow-burn, steamy romance with classic fantasy worldbuilding. Follow fated mates Cassia and Lio through their epic love story for a guaranteed series HEA.

So happy to be starting a fantasy romance series that promises a strong political plot alongside a slow burn, star-crossed lovers vibe!
I heard amazing things about Blood Mercy before I picked it up and it did not disappoint. It's a bit of a struggle to get into as it has a strong historical-esque writing style and a lot of world building and politics kind of thrown at you, but as our two main characters started interacting with each other about 20% in, I started to sink into the story.
My only real negative on this one is that slow pacing and struggle through the first 100 pages, so I'm super hyped to get to book 2, which, dare I say it? May even be a 5 star prediction.
Especially after that last chapter which essentially lives in my mind rent free.

p.s. this has the sexiest blood drinking scene I've ever read.

I finished it. Finally. It took me two months to do it, and I only managed it due to my own dogged tenacity and stubbornness. This book was sooooooo long ... and not the good sort of long where you don't mind because the story drives you to want to spend almost 800 pages reading it. This book felt even longer because I rarely felt the desire to pick it up. I just didn't care about what was going on, and that made it take forever to finish this book.

I can see why lots of people enjoy this book. Two people who come from very different places find a way to connect and fall in love. It seems as if everything works against their relationship, but they find a way to make it work. There were beautiful moments in the story, but the entire book was just bogged down with too much stuff. I think the worst part of the story was the fact that it was impossible for me to understand exactly what was going on and why it was so important. When the story begins Cassia is trying desperately to find a way to meet a Hesperine representative. Why? We don't find out for a gazillion pages. I'm not sure why Vela Roth decided to drag this out. If I better understood Cassia's motivation, then I might have been more likely to feel invested in her machinations. Instead I felt like I was always missing things that I was (maybe?) supposed to know already. I felt lost for A LOT of this book. That may entirely be my own fault for not reading more carefully, but I don't think so. I think it was just sloppy writing that didn't quite push the story forward in a logical way.

Having said all that, this wasn't a terrible story. In fact, toward the end of everything I started to feel more invested in the characters and their actions. Unfortunately, the book ends with Cassia and Lio separated. I'm supposed to want to immediately grab the next book in the series so that I can see how this lovely couple finds a way to make things work. But there are at least five more books in the series, and if each one is like this first one ... well, I don't think I have the patience to slog through 10000 pages just to get to the HEA. Maybe I'll feel differently in the future, but for now, I think I'll pass. I'll give this one two stars. It was okay.

....

I really just want to ask what this was....

I picked this up against my better judgement because I was led to believe that this was fantasy romance with some plot. Some political manuevering... and even by fantasy romance standards this was lacking? In both the fantasy and the romance?

Now I know you might be asking yourself how can the fantasy be lacking in a book with a vampire coded love interest and humans that also posses magic, and dear reader I can only tell you that it was. In the past I have dragged people like a Robert Jordan who felt it necessary to describe every blade of grass on the way to a tower, but honestly we need some of the new girlies to start acting like him. This book felt like a series of discussions in rooms that felt more and more like characters floating in the void.

I do think it's important to judge a book in context, and while I read a paperback printing of this book from my library it is widely available on Kindle Unlimited where authors are paid for every page read, and clearly Ms. Roth was out here trying to nickel and dime her way to the spotlight. The first 150 or so pages are so monotonous to get through what with Lio hovering and not doing anything but complaining about the smell of cooked animal product, and Cassia... just sort of existing...

It's not until Lio smells that Cassia uses soap unlike the other people in the kingdom who heavily rely on scented oils to freshen their odor do things pick up. Sure you have to adjust to the fact that the only reason a romance is gonna happen is because of proper hygiene, but I suppose that is a better option than the inverse. Then we get 150 pages of learning everything there is to know about these vampire coded creatures, again in a series of convenient conversations is various voids and maybe one garden. It feels like another 100 or so pages is dedicated to various sexual acts between these two individuals with little regard to this little treaty thing that the Spring Equinox framing device is being used for only to then spend the last 100 or so pages trying to thwart this vaguely political plot from being pulled off...

The book isn't bad, it's just boring... Even for free I do think that we should be expecting a little something something... After sort of just existing for the past few years this series is finally getting its moment in the sun, but I do not care about these cardboard characters or the void that they spent 600+ pages dancing through and so I will just find comfort in the fact that after however many more installments they'll get their HEA and be at peace with that.

Blood Mercy is the first book in Vela Roth’s Blood Grace series, and I loved this epic fantasy romance! The world-building and character development are amazing, the story is intriguing, and the love story is swoon-tactic! The story follows Cassia, a human and the bastard daughter of the king of Tenebra, and Lio, an immortal Hesperine diplomat who is attending a summit with the humans and his peers for the first time in centuries. When Cassia and Lio develop an unexpected friendship, they both must face their feelings, the dangers that threaten them, and the nefarious happenings at the summit that threaten both their kingdoms. Can this unlikely pair work together to save their people?

Cassia and Lio are fantastic characters, and the story is told from both of their perspectives. Their lives are very different, yet they complement each other well. They are both so compelling, and they are exceptionally layered and developed. I feel like we learn so much about both of them, and really get to understand their thoughts, feelings, goals, and motivations. Cassia and Lio are courageous and strong, and they both want similar things for their kingdoms and from the summit. Cassia is burdened and grief-stricken over the violent death of her sister and what happened to her afterward. She yearns for answers that she thinks she might find in the visiting Hespertines, which is a really interesting aspect of the story. You get to learn a lot about the Hesperines and Cassia’s father and people through learing about Cassia’s sister. Cassia is also generous with her time and skill, though she constantly feels the threat of death looming. Treated as an outcast and vilified because of the circumstances of her birth, Cassia has no control over her life when the story starts, but as it progresses, she grows stronger and more self-assured, which is definitely connected to her relationship with Lio.

Unlike Cassia, Lio is very much loved and supported by his family. A new ambassador for his people, Lio is determined to prove his worth to his famous family members and friends. He is a sincere, and intelligent male who just happens to be a beautiful and charming vampire. It’s interesting because mortals are raised to believe that the Hesperines are evil, vicious, and blood-thirsty, intent on draining humans to death. Of course, the mortals pushing this fallacy are the most villainous of all, and the Hesperines are the exact opposite. There are definite messages throughout the book about what makes a monster and who the monsters really are.

Those of you who know me know that the romance is usually my favorite part of a story, and it is definitely my favorite part of this one!! My word, the relationship between Cassia and Lio is the sweetest, most romantic, slow-building enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance! Lio is so gentle and patient and kind, and I love how he slowly grows on Cassia. Though tentative at first, Lio and Cassia develop a strong friendship before their relationship turns romantic, and they have many long, deep, and intimate conversations. Not shockingly considering her history and years of being told of the evil of the Hesperians, Cassia is slow to trust. She has been betrayed, threatened, and more, so she is hesitant to let anyone get too close to her. However, Lio changes all that, and it’s positively swoon-tactic!

As romantic feelings develop, Cassia is surprised as it is the first time she has ever had these feelings about another person. However, Lio is tough to resist, and they are drawn to each other. Some of the things Lio says to Cassia are so unbelievably romantic, and many of their secret meetings are filled with pining, sexual tension, and squelched desire. Cassia and Lio learn a lot about each other’s worlds from each other, and they help each other throughout the summit. But what I like the most is how Lio shows Cassia a life much different from the threatening and dangerous confines she lives in under her watchful and malicious father. Lio brought hope with him and shows Cassia possibilities she never even dreamed about. Their romance is beautiful, and they connect on a deep level that is powerful and lovely.

I also really love the relationship between Cassia and Knight. Knight has been by Cassia’s side through everything, and they are wonderful companions. He’s ferocious and protective and so sweet, and he’s one of the few things that brings joy to Cassia’s life, especially when the only other loving relationship she had was taken from her. Lio’s relationships contrast Cassia’s, as he is surrounded by supportive family and friends who love him unconditionally, and Cassia has no one except her loyal canine. Luckily, as the story progresses, Cassia finds that she is not as alone as she initially thought.

The world-building in this story is immense. Layered and complex, the story includes the culture, history, politics, religion, and more of each kingdom. It is meticulous and thorough and really brings the world to life. The author created a unique type of vampires, and I’m so intrigued by them. Their beliefs, culture, politics, families, powers, and more are dynamically developed and interesting, and the kingdom sounds like such a beautiful and peaceful place to live. It contrasts well with the oppressive, dark, and dangerous kingdom Cassia’s grown up in. Her life is never safe, and she does not know the feelings of freedom and security. Lio, on the other hand, lives in a world that is peaceful and welcoming. I’m eager to see more of Lio’s kingdom and am hopeful that Cassia will end up there instead of in a place where she constantly has to watch her back.

The story includes powerful themes like the manipulative control of those in power, the dangers of prejudice, learning to trust, and more. There’s also a ton of political intrigue, suspense, and an ending that made me desperate to read the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend the book to readers who enjoy epic fantasy or romantasy.

Special thanks to Vela Roth for gifting me a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved so so so much of this book 💛✨

This is a "slow burn" star crossed lovers story. And I mean slow burn. This book is over 600 and you defs get to know so much about the world and the characters before they are getting together.

My favourite part of this was how extensive the world feels. This is a fan ro that the author did not skip out on the fantasy. This world feels well thought out with such intricate details and lore.

Some ppl think the beginning is very slow and I think it's because there's a focus on the world and the politics rather then the Romance. I think knowing that go in really helps!

Lio is often described as a cinnamon role character and man he is so fricken cute 😭😍 I loved him so much and he's on of the sweetest male love characters I've read from.

Cassia is a strong MC who the world really isn't very nice to. But she's smart and she knows how to survive. I love how she was done, and the way she thinks.

The characters in this are incredible imo. I also really loved the unique take on vampires.

Why this didn't get 5 stars. A lot of the world building is done through dialogue. The pacing was a little bit off.

I can't wait to read book two.

Ps the audio is really good.

When I first saw the premise for BLOOD MERCY I was intrigued, though I admit I was intimidated by the page length. With an incredibly detailed and complex world and slow building forbidden romance, BLOOD MERCY was a good read but the pacing didn't fully work for me. However, while this didn't fully connect for me I do feel like a lot of readers would love this one, especially if you like to really sink down and marinate into a book's world, politics, and history.

As the illegitimate daughter of the King of Tenebra, Cassia knows she shouldn't be seeking out one of the Hesperine diplomats in Tenebra for peace talks, but once she meets Lio she can't stay away. The more time Lio spends with Cassia under the cover of darkness the more he desires her, in both body and blood, but their meetings go against all the rules and if they're found out, it could mean death.

The first 50% of BLOOD MERCY is very slow and very long and while I appreciated the attention to detail and the immersive world building it moved too slow for me. The best way I can describe it is that stuff was happening but because there's no sense of urgency to any of the characters' actions or thoughts it feels like nothing is happening. It just ends up being a lot of conversations between Cassia and Lio, or Lio and the embassy, or Cassia and the mages of Kyria. These conversations build a lot of the history of Tenebra and especially the Hesperines but with no pressures or deadlines the tension was gone.

That being said, I did like both Lio and Cassia as characters and I thought the Hesperines and their culture was really cool. Hesperines are basically like vampires, they need blood to survive and they live forever, but Hesperines are infinitely peaceful and gentle. Their biggest concern is healing and helping humans and when needed, providing the Gift so that those who are dying can live forever. Of course many humans think they're monsters so their history with the human kingdoms is fraught with problems and distrust. Lio is young for a Hesperine (only 88) and this is his first mission as an initiate ambassador; I liked Lio's selflessness and his genuine care for all those around him. He's a good match for Cassia because he respects her in ways she's not used to as the King's illegitimate daughter and his kindness wins her over. As the book goes on we see Cassia grow into herself and find her voice and this was probably one of the highlights of BLOOD MERCY for me. I enjoyed her growing confidence and her realizations that there were people willing to help her if she just reached out. I can tell Cassia is going to become a force to be reckoned with.

Once the book hits 50% it starts to pick up in pace and the romance between Cassia and Lio really starts to build. Vela Roth does a fantastic job expressing all the emotions involved; between Lio's hunger for Cassia's blood and Cassia's newly discovered desires, the intimacy between these two is very sensually written. It's a lot of emotions and desires and cravings and it really sweeps the reader into the moment. It takes a while to get there, but I think BLOOD MERCY really starts to shine in the second half. The last 25% comes in like a wrecking ball and everything starts to happen. It almost felt like a different book because suddenly things were happening, plots were being uncovered, schemes were being made and everything was culminating in a possible fight between the humans and the Hesperines. I will make a quick note that this does end on a bit of a cliffhanger and Cassia and Lio's story is only just beginning.

This was a hard review to put together because even though it didn't fully land for me I do think BLOOD MERCY was an impressive fantasy romance with a lot to enjoy if you're willing to dedicate the time to it. I would definitely recommend this to readers who love forbidden romance, deep world building, and slower paced plots with lots of room to develop.

no rating ~ DNF @ pg.61... for now

Despite being positively surprised by the set-up of this book, I'm not getting on well with the way that the dialogue is written, it's verbose and overly formal, additionally it is taking too long for things to happen in the story. I'm in a bit of a brain-is-mush book mood at the moment and this book is asking me to concentrate on it way more than I care to right now. This is very much a me not the book situation and I have every intention of coming back to it when I'm more in the mood.

“I’ve never heard such a charming sound,” he told her.
“What sound?”
“Your laughter.”

I absolutely adored everything about Blood Mercy. Everything about this story was so incredibly well done. While the cover was the first thing that drew me in, the plot absolutely had me convinced to read this story. Blood Mercy follows two POV’s; Cassia, the bastard daughter of the human king, and Lio a political ambassador from the vampires (Hesperine’s as they’re called in here). Lio and Cassia start meeting in traitorous secret, and eventually, fall in love (this is a very simplified version of what happens in here LMAO). The author described these two as “star-crossed lovers”, and I very much can confirm that is the entire vibe.

This is one of those rare fantasy-romances that has just as much (maybe even more) focus on the fantasy elements including the world building, the magic systems, the fictional religion aspects, the vampire (Hesperine) customs, ect, as it does the romance. The writing also has so much lyrical and meticulous detail. This is truly one of the best most well-written things I’ve read on KU. So when I say I want a fantasy romance I truly mean exactly like this book. Although the plot is very slow moving from beginning to end, that didn’t deter me from this story in the slightest! The world building is very very heavy in the first 50% and the characters and relationships are very heavy in the last 50%. And this book is not short at all. It’s over 700 pages with very firm fixation on the lyrical writing and fantasy.

And while the fantasy elements were absolutely incredible in this book (and heavily prevalent), the romance and characters were easily my favorite part! I adored Cassia and Lio so so dearly. Lio is a very soft, sweet and downright precious cinnamon roll hero (which is my absolute weakness guys). He’s very good with his words (wink wink), and he never wants to resort to violence in anything he does. Cassia is a very good match to Lio’s character. She’s very obedient and meek for a lot of Blood Mercy, but she has so much growth as this story goes on. She becomes a strong-willed, and self-sufficient woman who takes matters into her own hands and will resort to violence if she must. And even though Lio is the stronger one (physically at least) of the two, Cassia would literally do anything for him and protect him at all costs.

Their relationship and character contrasts were the absolute best to read about, and their interactions were so fucking sweet. Lio would do anything for Cassia, and absolutely vise versa. They were just so god damn soft and I could go on and on and on about how much I loved these two and their relationship. Not only were they so cute, but this book had absolutely one of the hottest blood drinking scenes I’ve ever read. And believe me when I say I’ve read a shit ton of vampire books.

I’d almost given up on fantasy-romance so many times these past few months, especially a lot of the ones on KU. A metaphor I always like to use for KU: Kindle-unlimited is essentially a landfill stuffed with a whole lot of trash, and very few diamonds in the rough. This is absolutely one of those gems, and if you’ve been wanting a fantasy-romance with a heavy, sorted out fantasy plot, well done, fleshed out characters, and beautiful writing, I’m begging you all to read this book. You won’t be disappointed, even though there are a few pacing issues.

This will definitely be going on my favorite books of the year, and I’m so very excited to continue on with this series (but scared because how will I ever read that many books…). Yes I’ll admit there were a few issues, but for this being the author’s debut, and something I enjoyed so dearly, I don’t even mind. I will now talk about this book every chance I get and beg everyone to read it.

DNF @ 15% 😔✊ + cherry-picking spicy scenes
My hopes were so high that I downloaded books 1 and 2 of this series together. And that’s how they’ll be leaving my Kindle as well.🫡 I need to accept that if it’s taking me 2+ weeks to start a book, I’m just not into it. Or I’m depressed. In this case it was both.🤗 This didn’t grab me whatsoever, which was disappointing given its high ratings. The characters didn’t jump out at me as anything special, and the writing felt incredibly verbose. It seemed like I was suffering through sooooo much exposition and I was having a hard time discerning what the plot/conflict was, let alone the lore/magic system. I skipped ahead a bunch (because I’m trash) and things did not improve. No way I was going to make it through 600+ pages of absolute snoozefest. Got to the end of my flipping around (aka searching the ebook for “kiss”) and found the damn glossary at the back of the book??? Bitch I needed that after chapter 1!!! 🚨Also new book ick alert!!!🚨 If the author uses special fantasy language words for 🍆 and 🐱…federal prison. Immediately. Going to leave it at that.

it’s 3am, so please bear with the ramblings of a madwoman.

i just finished this book and omg. one of the most beautifully crafted, sensual, original books i have ever read AND it’s about vampires. it doesn’t get any better than this!!! this book is the definition of ART and i feel honored to have had the pleasure of experiencing it.

the romance deliciously rips open your heart. the spice is some of the best spice i have ever read. there was nothing that vela didn’t think of. the bloodletting was immaculate, i cannot even begin to tell you. and oh god the amount of bloodletting is so toe curling my eyes still haven’t rolled back. lio is the perfect lover and i wouldn’t mind if he showed me “how good it could be” up against a tree.

overall the emotions conveyed are stunning. from words well chosen to acknowledging physical and emotional boundaries. vela roth is truly a masterful author. i can’t wait to read the rest of this series.

DNF at around 3 hours from the end

I'm SO tempted to put this as read because I've invested SO MUCH OF MY TIME TRYING TO READ THIS BOOK. Look, this book and I? Well, we go way way back. I've tried to read this book around 4 times in the past few years. Every time I've gotten to the 7 to 8 hour mark and was bored out of my mind and stopped. This time I read a few reviews and even though they compared this to my current all time favorite series (for the last few years) From Blood and Ash I simply could not get into this book. If Blood and Ash is slow paced and long winded this one is triple that. By the time it finally picked up I was kinda sorta over it, which is very unfortunate.

The romance is very sweet and respectful and I loved it! I just wanted less world building happening in the beginning. There has to have been a way to ramp up the romance aspect of this book while still putting in the world building in a way that didn't bore me to tears and that still made sense. I don't claim to know how to do that but I've read books that have done that so I know it's possible.

I understand the comparison to the Blood And Ash books but at the same time, I don't. If I'm being honest I think this book taught me that I would rather things be happening and feel lost for a little while than have everything slowly presented to me to only then start to kick off the actual story. I've learned that as much as I like a well built world in my books I'd rather the focus be on the characters and the adventure they are going on first and foremost.

The main characters were great and the romance got there eventually! Overall, this would have been a great book had it been written a tad bit differently for me. It's a personal qualm and unfortunately was not for me but I understand why so many people love this series so much. Maybe I'll try this again in a few years to see if my reading tastes have changed any in that time. It's too bad too because the covers for this entire series ARE GORGEOUS!

I really, really liked this. A slow burn fantasy romance where the fantasy is incredibly detailed and satisfying. We’re living the dream!

Blood Mercy is the first book in a self-published fantasy romance series. Cassia is our main character, and she is the bastard daughter of a king (a terrible, tyrannical, cruel king). She normally tries to stay away from court in order to stay away from her father, but a once in a lifetime event is about to occur and she needs to be there. She maneuvers her way to court so she can meet a Hesperine. (Why she needs to do so you have to wait to find out.)

Hesperines in this world are essentially vampires because they drink blood, but they are not your typical folkloric vampires. They are kind and compassionate, and like basically they are hippies? Anyway, the treaty the Hesperines made with Cassia’s kingdom has long-lapsed (as in, four hundred years lapsed), and a delegation is coming to renew it, which is a very big deal, considering that Hesperines are thought of as the monsters they very much are not in her country. Everyone is on edge, because the king is not known for his compassion, and it’s pretty much given that he’s up to something in inviting the Hesperines.

Lio is our other main character, and he is absolutely a cinnamon roll. He is the youngest member of the diplomatic party, and after he and Cassia meet by chance one night (he’s out hunting, and she is looking for a Hesperine) they keep meeting, getting to know one another slowly. Cassia is a very lonely person, but she is smart and cunning, so learning to trust Lio is a process. It also takes her a long time to build up the courage to ask him what she needs to know.

Honestly, most of the book is made up of their meetings and their conversations, but it does get very steamy, and the last hundred pages were a whirlwind of exciting plot and court intrigue. If you like fantasy and romance, and fantasy romance! there is a very good chance that you will also like this book. I really need to get on with finishing the series before I forget too much, because I’m very curious to see where it’s going.

Booktok brought me to the water but Vela Roth's two star crossed lovers, Cassia and Lio made me stay.

Although the book got off to a slow start, it finished with me downloading the entire series. This is HUGE because the fantasy genre isn't one of my favorites. Yet I think the slow pace and the thoroughness of the two protagonists discussing the differences between them and their worlds made me a believer.

There are over 700+pages so it won't be a quick read but trust me it's worthwhile! And who can resist a sexy vampire? Not me!

Ohh how I suffered with this book. You can read my updates when I was reading it and when I got to 20-35% I got so conflicted..

But lets take it one step at a time: First, the lenght of the book and the overall lenght of the series. I will be more carefull now about this. i TBR this book because the blurb looked interesting and I didnt check how many pages it had. So , at 10% I checked and it was a nearly 700 page book. Ok, the worldbuilding was a little tough but worth it so I keep reading. I make a small break and read a few reviews because at 20-25% of the book nothing was happening and I discovered this was a 10 BOOK series and that really let me down...

I dont mind reading a long book, but I was really upset because this could have been A GREAT BOOK with a beautiful story to tell.. I loved the characters and the writting, but like the tittle says, it was bad executed. I gave it 3 stars because although I couldnt enjoy it the way I would have liked, I know there are people out there who can think this book is for them.

So, you will love this book if you like
- extensive worldbuilding
-a really slow burn romance
-cinnamon MMC and confident FMC

Dont pick this book if you dont like:
- Very loong monologues
- extensive lenght book made on purpose by the author to make the series longer ( if you read zodiac academy you will get what I mean hehe )

Spice
Im going to explain spice in each review I make because Im a mood reader and for me is important to know if the book has smut scenes or not. Sometimes Im in the mood to read a sweet YA novel and I dont mind getting little spice scenes but what I dont like is getting into a book thinking is spicy and then discovering it was fade to black or some shit like that. So if you like to go blind into your books skip this paragraph

SO this is the ephitome of slow burn romance.Because is a long book, it took a lot of pages to even get to A KISS. Is more like friends to lovers, so you have to endure all the friends to lovers part to get to the spice. The smut scenes happen at 60% in the book . There are various chapters and they go in crescendo. Nothing too explicit and mostly sentimental . Dont expect tipically vampire sex thou..is more in the sweet side. Overall if you are here for the spice you will have to read first almost 400 pages of friend to lovers dual pov with some slow burn but nothing phisical

gonna start this off by saying that the fantasy romance genre isn't something i would typically gravitate to and all the previous ones ive read had been disappointing reads.

i picked this up on a whim expecting a fun book and it is exactly what i got. what i didn't expect was to really appreciate the really well crafted world-building (i don't usually care for it), the beautiful descriptions, and the interesting court intrigue it had; but what i especially liked was how the characters were constructed.

at first i thought leo (the love interest) was a fae which....idk why i thought that, but he's actually a vampire, or by their terms a hesperine who are seen as heretics and evil beings that drain people of their blood by the humans which are all lies of which we see through leo's character. i will admit i expected him to be the typical asshole-ish type of love interest who's humor heavily relied on sexual innuendoes and who constantly thinks of having sex or being physical with our main character (cassia) but he turned out to be kind and forms an emotional bond with her before anything turns physical.

the whole reason i wanted to a write an actual review for the book was because i wanted to talk about cassia and how much i enjoyed her characterization. at first glance she seems like our typical locked away from the world main character but what i was really relieved to find out is that she wasn't the naïve kind who knows nothing about anything but someone who despite being barely able to do anything to do anything, uses those limited recourses to get what she wants. she found a way to get her tyrannical father to bring her to the castle where the hesperines will be so she could find out things on her own, she uses her botanical knowledge to help. throughout the books she grows bolder and stronger and while i don't want to give credit for the love interest for that, he was their encouraging her every step of the way, and WAS the push she needed to become that bolder person.

the romance in this book was something i really liked. leo being 88 (...) and her being 21, you'd expect some sort of power imbalance to be there, but surprisingly there really wasn't. they were both on equal footing, each learning stuff from the other's world; and when anything physical happened, it was almost always cassia initiating it, asking him to bite her, telling him she wants to sleep with him, he never tries to rush her or seduce into anything she didn't explicitly want first (the bar is low but with the amount of books ive read that had iffy consent, the emphasis of it here is really nice). even when it came to them having sex, he wasn't some sex god who was gonna teach her everything, but he along with her were BOTH inexperienced and was their first time having sex which also really helped not having a power imbalance. as for how the sex scenes were i genuinely don't care about them, or sex scenes in general but again i was really glad there was such a heavy emphasis on consent.

the one thing i really didn't like was the made up words for the genitals...just use pussy and dick please no one's going to give you a slap on the wrist for it.

"Flirtation was only words, and words were the one thing they could exchange freely.Safely."

This book had such an intricate world building and the Lore was something else! As a Greek, I loved how the language and many of the names or places were of greek origin! The fact that there was a character with the name Argyros, had me thinking of a greek singer, but that's just me, I guess.

This book scared me because of its length and it was slow at moments, but I especially enjoyed the romance and how it picked up, especially after halfway through the book. I love books that have vampire- human romance and this was no exception. Their dialogues and their chemistry were really intense. The language was so elegant and I truly felt like I was in another era or world. Loved that it was mainly scenes in the woods, the castle or the temple and gave me the strong fantasy element.

The story had everything you expect. Plot twists, suspense, adventure, betrayals. I am very intrigued to see how this story is going to continue for them. Give it a chance if you love complex fantasy worlds with a hint of spicy forbidden romance!

If you love From Blood and Ash you will love this book.

If you love slow burn (very slow) and complex world-building, you will love this book. Also, if you are a fan of "From Blood and Ash" series, this is definitely worth the read!

I love how Lio shows Cassia can grow and be her own person, a strong and emphatic capable woman, without taking credit or forcing his own views. The author has a big, complicated world she reveals to us bit by bit. It is enough to make us thirst for more, but enough to keep us hooked to the story.

It is a story of opposing worlds and opposing world views that make the time and effort to understand each other, only to realise they are not so different, after all.

I would recommend this book to any who love adult fantasy, romance or slow burn. Like I mentioned above, it reminded me immensely of the From Blood and Ash series and anyone who loves it will surely love this, as well.

Dnfed on page 297. I'm really sad about this :( I'm almost halfway in and I don't think it's for me. I can't seem to get fully into it, maybe the writing style isn't for me. I'm not sure what it is

Wow, wow, wow. This book was a *chefs kiss*

I'll be honest in that when I first started reading the writing was a little more dense then the quick fantasy romance read I thought I was getting- but the more I read, the more I appreciated the intricacies of the writing. Every exchange is meaningful and these dang characters had a way with words that completely immersed me in the story.

Individually I really liked these characters and together they were great. And the romance between these two? I don't know, it was gentle and sweet while being tense and heartbreaking.

Might write a longer review on the backstory later but I will def read on!

Appalling

This is so badly written I just couldn't finish it. I got to page 83 and couldn't put myself through it. The absolute slog to even get the far felt like I'd been reading for hours. All these people, places, concepts, none of it explained. Didn't have a clue what anyone was talking about and wasn't invested enough in the characters to try and find out. The odd archaic language that seems to ramble and hint but never actually get anywhere. Yet another tiktok recommended peice of drivel. Don't do it to yourself.

2.5-3 stars.

I read this for my romantasy bingo square and I remain firm in my belief that, while I adore very certain fantasy romances, I am extremely picky about what truly clicks romance-wise and most books that are popular under the “romantasy” label right now may just not be for me. This was a better fit for me than some of the other romantasies I’ve read, but it still left me underwhelmed.

There is absolutely care and thought put into the writing itself, and I enjoyed parts of the peaceful, beneficent vampire lore. Things really, really came into place for me emotionally during the part of the book where Cassia told Lio about her older sister’s death and how the Hesperines saved her - this was very moving to me, and I thought the romance and writing both really shone. Generally speaking, my favorite parts were everything related to Cassia, Solia, their relationship, and their rebellion. Also the giant dog with stinky paws!! Finally, you KNOW I love a love interest who is just a big old sweetie pie, and Lio is pretty much eternally (ha ha) kind, sweet, earnest and supportive.

Unfortunately, other parts were rougher. I was disappointed by how much of the growing romance was just Lio infodumping facts about his world to Cassia with a few smaller gestures thrown in. Due to Lio’s support, Cassia undergoes a very significant empowerment arc very quickly, then there is a lot of smut, and then they’re magical vampire soulmates at the end. It was all way too quick, and I didn’t feel that Cassia’s growth was super believable in the way my favorite healing arcs of this kind are.

The plot is somewhat uneven throughout, and while the pieces do come together ultimately, there are some moments of dubious convenience such as Cassia justifying the decision to spy on her father by herself and doing so just in time to hear him infodump his entire evil plan and motivations. There are a lot of Hesperine side characters who only appear a few times with little characterization but who have complicated relationship/family dynamics, and I struggled to keep them straight. If I do continue with the series, I know that I will remember nothing about any of them. All in all, I didn't hate my time with this by any means but didn't absolutely love it the way I was hoping to either.

Now, DID I choose it as my romantasy square because I’d heard good things about the smutty blood-drinking scenes and I was hoping to rekindle the magic of my Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough???????????? Don’t worry about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m so glad I returned to this! I soft dnf’d this last year because I just wasn’t in the mood for it. This book has A LOT of intricate world building and politics, and the pacing is quite slow, especially the beginning. I do think this is setting up for a complex world/story as I know this is quite a long series. I was finally just in the mood to immerse myself in a long series, and sometimes you just have to let the first book(s) cook! The style of writing is more historical/old-timey than other books I’ve read, so that took some getting used to.
This book has such a unique and interesting take on vampires. In this series vampires (aka Hesperines) are peaceful and good. I loved learning about the vampire lore in this world since it’s so vastly different from anything I’ve read before.
Cassia had wonderful character development in this first installment. She started off very closed-off and kept herself muted in order to be safe. She wasn’t a risk taker and she lacked confidence. Throughout the book, she became very brave and self-assured. She’s intelligent and is finally putting that to good use, and I can’t wait to see how her character continues to develop! Lio is SUCH a cinnamon roll. He’s very different from the typical fantasy MMC—he’s gentle, kind, and even a little shy. I absolutely love him and it’s such a nice change of pace from every other romantasy. I think Cassia and Lio each brought out the best in each other, and I’m excited for their romance to continue.
I personally don’t think this will be for everyone, but I’m looking forward to starting the next book! I think this first installment did a wonderful job at setting up a series that not only focuses on the romance, but also an intricate world full of politics, scheming, and magic
