So far I managed to. Find only around 2/5th of the book and I can tell with clarity that little bit has left me reeling on the spot. It start with psychological terms, giving us a glimpse into a heavily layered psychological mystery but boy did I not expect such a heavy storyline pushed in front of your face. It seemed like even I felt as if I was reading something really not written as a BL story but rather a complicated thriller. At time it even felt like horror.

Honestly I want to continue to see what is truly happening, but also another part of me is truly scared to what will be brought by the other half of the story. It has be questioning my sanity too. Hopefully the other bit will be updated so I can know what truly is happening. Until the rest is updated, adios.

Wow??

This book is unlike anything I ever expected it to be. It is focused on psychology and mental ilness reflected in human behavior, which I adored reading about, especially in the first part of the book. Honestly, I didn't really care for the romance, but that's something I'll get into further into this review.

Starting with the good things, I loved the way the characters were introduced to us in chapter 1 as Doctor Ton and Patient Thana, with specific characteristics attached to their characters, only for these to be completely messed up and reversed around chapters 3-4. That's definitely my favorite thing about this book, because it's what completely hooked me at the beginning and got me to read all of it in two sittings. The psychology tricks played by the author were so well done, my words of praise are not enough to make it justice.

However, things started to be less great from chapter 9 onwards. The biggest plot twist in the beginning of the book with so much potential to be developed is instead closed with a time skip, and therefore heading right into the beginning of the romance between the leads. It felt shallow and abrupt. This is supposed to be a spoiler free commentary so I won't rant much about those few following chapters. It was from then onwards that I began disliking Wai (who I really liked at the beginning), and I couldn't forgive him until the end of the book - I think what he forced Thana to do and how he handled the situation deserves no redemption.

Then the rest of the book just felt underwhelming to me. It had such a strong start, and yet it seemed like Sammon was sacrificing the plot for the sake of romance (one-sided one at that), and I just can't understand the choice of direction for the narration. Still, there were moments here and there that I could see the same potential it showed at the beginning, which kept me reading.

I love Sammon's mind for plots and the accuracy with medical-related themes since she's an expert in the area but - one thing that always gets me sceptical about reading her books is the way she portrays the "I like guys and that's not okay" mcs. I think it's great when writers portray the struggles of being a queer person or finding out you're queer. But from what I've read from her, she writes her characters with a little bit of internalized homophobia. Our society highly influences our ideas, that's a fact, but the way she wrote Ton (in this instance) didn't sit right with me at times. His horror at the possibility of someone else thinking he might have feelings for a man? His disregard for Thana's feelings because he didn't consider them romantic just because he's a man? Also, the way his toxic masculinity shows in the beginning when things don't work out with his girlfriend?? He starts looking at the woman around him like they're his prey. His behavior is partially excused for what comes next, but still??? This is exactly what got me to put Manner Of Death on hold. I just couldn't get over the depiction of "gay is bad"/"if you're gay you should hide it". Manner of Death's Bun is 100% gay and yet he hides it by using women and there's even some descriptions in the beginning of him checking out his colleague??? And thinking about "what if he wasn't gay?". The series version is so much better in this aspect, where Bun is just unapologetically gay. I'm sorry, this isn't about MOD, I know, but it's also a Sammon work and this just doesn't sit right with me at all.

Overall, I wish I could give this 4 starts - the psychological part really deserves it. However, everything else falls short and I can't help but give it 3 stars. Great potential though, the skeleton of this story is amazing, I hope that they turn this into a series someday - it would be thrilling to see if some improvements were made!!
