The MDS and allies have withdrawn from the CoH, and they now want to become the center of gravity for humankind.
The goal is to obtain localized wins, draw in more allies, and achieve victory no matter the cost.
With the alliance undone, Rev must fight a seemingly unwinnable war.
But Marines never quit. They never falter. They never give up.
Humanity is about to experience a pivotal turning point in its history—one that will culminate in a discovery so profound that it may very well change everything.
These books just keep getting better and better! There was definitely a lot of action in this book. The Story progressed very nicely there was a few spots where I was definitely taken aback and did not know what was going to happen with the story. But I give the writers credit they kept me on my toes and kept me wanted to see what happened. I definitely recommend this book.
I really like these stories about individual soldiers or Marines in this case. It lets us see the fighting from their prospective and not from the Captain of a starship or some other high ranking individual that a lot of stories are written about. Oh, yes, being a Captain of a starship, especially one that is going into battle or fighting an unexpected enemy is pretty good stuff too, but once in a while I like to get away from "the big picture" and read about how the "grunts" are fighting. This story line with now Staff Sergeant Reverent (Rev) Pelletier, Union Marine Corps are some of the best down and dirty sci-fi fighting with a twist.
If you'll remember, Rev is an IBHU Marine, that's an Integrated Bionic Hopological Unit Marine which really means he has a weapon prosthesis attacked to his otherwise missing arm. He lost his arm in one of his past battles which would have seemed to have been the end of his career. Oh, the Union Marines would have gotten him a regular prosthesis so he could carry on his civilian life, but Rev didn't want to get out. There also just happened to be a crazy doctor working an unusual project that was looking for wounded Marines to which she could hook up her integrated weapon platform. This weapons platform took the place of the missing limb and allowed this specific Marine to be very dangerous, indeed!
By now, Rev is the most experienced IBHU Marine since he was the first. He has seen lots of combat and has been joined by many other IBHU Marines. The Union Marines had gone from employing Rev and his kind together, then in separate squads and now again in separate units. His current unit has the IBHU Marines spread out with Staff Sergeant Pelletier now a Platoon Sergeant. He and his platoon were still fighting the Manifest Destiny Sphere (MDS) for reasons that were beyond Rev pay-grade and interest. He just didn't like using his skills against other humans. He originated to provide firepower against the Centaurs, but that war had been won. Yet, humans and their kind can't seem to enjoy peaceful living for very long. So the MDS up and started a war.
After their mission comes to a successful conclusion, Rev gets tasked with escorting a VIP MDS POW back to HQ Intel. Why he was selected was beyond him, but that was his mission and he was going to do it. It should have been an easy thing, but as with all easy things they can turn very difficult with the blink of an eye. That blink came when his aircraft transport was shot down. Rev and his prisoner, an MDS Staff Captain, were thrown out the back of the aircraft close enough to the ground that neither were buried in it. Whether that was a good thing or not, Rev would later find out after he had released his prisoner in order to attempt to rescue himself.
Let's just say that Rev becomes a POW himself for a short while, but some other things worked out in his favor which got him released back to his unit to fight another day. The next mission is probably one he never wanted to have gone on if he had known the possible outcome. See, Rev and Tomiko have a very romantic relationship developing and it takes all he can do to stay professional when in fighting mode as it pertains to Staff Sergeant Tomiko. They both promised to cool it when on duty and were doing pretty good until Tomiko got killed! Read the rest of the story.
I can't imagine going through the stuff these Union Marines have to do. Still, I can see Mr. Brazee's writings in these stories for sure. He's done a lot of that kind of story telling in his "United Federations Marine Corps Series" which I really, really like. He and Mr. Chaney get real personal with the story and it sounds almost too realistic. The advances in medicine seem to be short of miracles, but I suppose anyone from the Civil War would think our current military medical operations are miracles also. I can't imagine walking around with a weapon integrated into my body that can react to my thoughts. I would be too dangerous to myself and certainly anyone around me. Good thing they are just telling a futuristic story. Still it's very, very good military sci-fi and that's what I love to read.
I did see a book 7, "When Words Fail" up for pre-order on Amazon. Delivery date is shown as 20 March 2022. I'm putting on my reading list right now!
The human alliance has been torn apart, the Manifest Destiny Sphere and their allies pulling out of the Congress of Humanity. Initially there is an uneasy peace, but it does not take long before old animosity sparks between the former allies. Rev and his Company are sent in to capture strategic locations with some initial success. It is a game of political wins to try and win allies, and Rev can see how that is playing out as well. However, when they are sent to an ice planet to capture an objective, the MDS’s previous theft of the IBHU’s becomes apparent, and when the team attempts to retreat off world, they find that their route has been compromised, and they are trapped. The Marines must go to ground, as not only are they trapped on the planet, but their support in space has been compromised also, leaving them in a dangerous position. With no foreseeable escape in their future, the Marines are forced to scatter into small groups and await rescue, all the while being hunted by the MDS. When Tomiko is badly injured, things only get worse for Rev and his small group. Rev won’t let her go though, and he finally begins to realise just how much she means to him (It has taken long enough!!!). What follows is a bloody running battle and whilst we know that Rev will make it (he is the main character after all), there is no guarantee for anyone else. This is a really brutal episode in the series, with a high casualty rate, and gives a somewhat censored idea of how bad things can get for the marines on the frontlines. There is some great character work again in this book, as we see Rev struggling to understand his new role as Staff Sergeant, and whilst he has been desperate for this role, he is also worried that he is up to fulfilling it. As things fall apart with the various aspects of the story, we also get to see a more personal side of Rev, as we see his feelings for Miko finally come to the surface as he realises just how much she means to him, and that he does actually love her. Throughout all of this though, is the underlying story of the political conflict between the Union and the MDS and their allies and what this means for the future of humanity. Having just defeated the Centaurs and come to a peace agreement, a civil war now would not only be devastating for humanity, but potentially provide the opportunity for the Centaurs to strike at humanity when they are weak. As this story unfolds, there are some really interesting things towards the end. One is obvious, given the not so subtle title, but there are other surprises that are going to lead to some really great stories to come!!
Rev Pelletier was a conscription; service in the Perseus Union Marine Corp was where he, & many other young "criminals" were assigned.
But now, Staff Sargeant Pelletier, the first IBHU Marine, was weapons platform by himself. And one of the PUMC's best fighters.
Before Rev could tell Tomiko, his love interest, how he really felt, he was called back into action to fight the MadDogs (Manifest Destiny Sphere) as they tried to take over several planets at the same time.
The battle Rev was was fierce; of course he battled the Karnans, his new "arch-enemy" - with metal incorporated into their heavily muscled bodies, they were hard to kill.
But Rev has a way to make me Fistpump, yell, & then LOL! He's a fine Marine, & I miss him between books. I can hardly wait until the next installment. This book was Amazing! (Please type as fast as you can!)
Escalation and then not......a game changing epilogue!
The war between the MDS and the Union is escalating. The marines are sent in to destroy a secret base on an ice planet that is doing some unknown research. They successfully attack the base but their route off the planet is cut off when the MDS attack their space craft. The marines need to fend for themselves while a much larger MDS force including Karnans, play cat and mouse with them! Miko gets badly injured and Rev cannot let her go as he realises how much he loves her..... You know of course they will get off the planet - Rev is the main character after all.... The MDS then attack the home planet of the Union in a last ditch attempt to get a victory. The title kinda gives away how that pans out......
But the epilogue brings things full circle .... Can't wait for the next one!
With a heavy heart Rev is thrust into heavy combat more than once due to the MDS decision to withdraw from the CoH and to attack various worlds as well. After the war against the Centaurs he very much dislikes the idea of humans killing each other but he knows his duty. So he remains steadfast even when D-4 shows their willingness to be petty animosity towards him. The epilogue looks like it starts a new story altogether but I suspect that somehow Rev will be involved.
I like this series. It's not too heavy with tech, and the warrior spirit is shown in these stories. The series itself so far indicates a constant political and military divide, and how the larger picture affects Rev as he navigates the story. And the cover did give away the story a little bit, showing what would happen at the end of the story, and well, my suspicions were confirmed. In any case, the story is good, and things work out for Rev toward the end of the story, showing what happens in wartime with relationships. I think the series is good so far, so I will move on to Book 7 and such.
The book makes you laugh makes you cry, makes you cheer. Very well done
If you want some of the realism of war this is the series and book to read. Plenty of action, plenty of drama, from the perspective of a lowly Sergeant. You see the world through his eyes, this is a man who has almost lost everything. I personally am glad he did not lose everything. No spoilers read the book and you understand what I’m talking about. Excellent going onto the next book.
The action is almost nonstop in this chapter of Rev's story. A lot of trials and tribulation, personal loss, and pain. A lot of soul searching and maturing. A bit of romance finally surfaces. A former rival/foe returns. Curious what's going to happen next...
As much as I love this series, and will absolutely read the next installment, I can’t help but to be disappointed in this 6th book. It probably needed a little longer to incubate. Inconsistent motivations, some continuity issues, and a runaway train of action sequences over substantive plot vehicle.
Definitely the worst book in the series. The author did really everything to get a setting which also could have taken place in 20th Century earth. That is not what science fiction is about and also not at all what the series started out with.
I almost didn’t read the next one. Luckily I did, it is much better.
I like the whole series. It's well written has Interesting character development. We have seen red, the main character, Go from being a Smart ass To being A. smart ass1st sergeant. After sex books He finally found a woman he can love,Tomiko And she is as big a smart ass as he is. I can see how they grew as a couple. I am not going to spoil The story of the ending about I said certainly recommend us To anyone who Likes Outer space fiction.
The change in POV to a female leisure ship captain at the end was disorienting. While it made for a very dramatic ending, it felt extraneous. It's too late in the series to switch away from Rev as the main character POV, especially at the end of the book. Maybe this sets a precedent to have alternating POVs with Rev and Tomiko but that's better begun when beginning a new installment.
Well another great storyline with plenty of blood and guts lol, great ending to one war just in time to get stuck into another one. Really looking forward to the next episode
Rev and Miko are two main character developed fully. The series need more characters to live because they are being killed off. Deadly fighting is occurring all over the human galaxy.
This is the 6th book of a series. You do want to start with book #1, "Sentenced to War". This book is bloodier than the ones that came before. I have pre-ordered the next one "When Words Fail".
This one seems to bounce back and forth a bit. There is a lot of action and a thread or two get resolved. Character development is good as is expected from Rev's history. A cliffhanger at the end
As with the previous books in this series, the writers create a very engrossing story with unique details of military ground battles that any Sci-Fi reader will love!
Another dam good read about rev and Milo and there story's within the marines and there visit to oopps there I go again giving the story away. Get the book and read you will enjoy revs antics
This book was many things but I felt it dragged a bit in the end. The winter survival scenes were some of the most hard hitting scenes i have ever read. And finally, we are back to humans vs aliens
Like fitting into the same old friends. Nice to have Rev and the others back. The story and plot for this book is just comfortable. I would truly hate it if there are too many red shirts. I enjoy both of these writers.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Wow what a tear jerker! Probably my favorite story so far. All I can say is it’s about time Rev! And the epilogue??? Whew! Can’t wait for the next one!!!
