Accompany Detective Rey Solis on a strange case of bank robbery.
Confront a mysterious figure in a magical tower.
Befriend menacing clockwork dogs.

Narrated by Kristin James, Richardson plunges us into the world of the Grey: a place where whatever you believe in hard enough comes to dangerous life, and death, magic, and the unexpected lie in wait. Harper Blaine sees the dead and in her stories she takes on cases where the dead cannot rest until she aids them. I loved each of the stories and was left wanting more from this world.

Richardson knows how to weave a story regardless of the subject, and she pulled me into each of the tales. Some set stories we know on end and twisted them, others made us ponder. I still shudder when I think of the reindeer.

You’ll meet dragons, step into a post-apocalyptic world and cross-paths with clockwork dogs. Except for the Harper Blaine stories, these shorts run from humorous to horror and everything in between. I found it worked best if I listened to one story, then paused to digest it. It’s a smorgasbord and Kristin James did a stellar job of narrating the stories. She enhanced the stories from her pacing to the voices she gave to each story.

Through the Grey has stories for fans of mystery, suspense, supernatural and fantasy. My favorites were the Harper Blaine stories, but I also enjoyed the warrior and her dragon, the clockwork dogs and an undead thief.

It’s always a pleasure listening/reading this author and I hope we see more from her. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

I was disappointed because I thought every story in this book was with Harper Blaine. I was even hoping for some epilogue story that happened after Revenant and would make the abrupt ending of the series better. But there were only 2 Harper Blaine stories and I've already read them.

Through the Grey is a short story collection. The best parts are two Greywalker shorts. If you have been wondering if Ms. Richardson's nine books series is worth starting, test it out with The Third Death of the Little Clay Dog and Chemotherapy.

I should comment that this book breaks the traditional "best story in front, second best next, third best in the middle, and fourth best is last." The deeper you go into the collection the better it gets.

Now onto review the stories:
1) Reindeer Games - One of two humor shorts, both of which are predictable. - You know who never has to worry if he is on the naughty list, Santa. (Contemporary Fantasy Humor)
2) Shatter - The battlefields of history, mind, society, leadership and work always have two things, and neither are the victorious. Only the dead and the traumatized. So many people believe it is better to destroy heaven than live in hell alone. (Apocalyptic science-fiction / magical realism)
3) Single Edged - Some days are bad, and others are worse. (Contemporary)
4) Chemotherapy - A Greywalker Story. Poison comes in a lot of forms and has dozens of uses.
5) Cutlass - Car jacking either goes horribly wrong or horribly right, depending on your point of view. (police procedural)
6) Drafty - Second of the humor shorts. A proper suit deserves respect (Fantasy)
7) Hearts Desire - Mirror mirror across the swamp, are my actions those of a psychopomp. (Fantasy)

Ends with the three best stories of the collection.
8) The Hallow Hounds- Quests three from a cave of magical things. (Steampunk)
9) The Third Death of the Little Clay Dog - The second Greywalker story, and the longest story, crossing into short novella territory. - Dogs are loyal. (Urban Fantasy)
10) Peacock in Hell - I think this has characters from other stories; they and the world they are in feel more formed than the (non-Greywalker) shorts. - There is no get-out-of-hell-free card, but a thief might work as a substitute in a pinch.

I loved getting a chance to read some more of Richardson's work because I loved her urban fantasy series Greywalker. This short story collection expands her range; it included a science fiction novella and some stories I'd categorize as general fiction. There is a steampunkish folktale retelling, "The Hollow Hounds" that was my favorite in the book. Richardson includes a Greywalker/Harper Blaine short piece and a wonderful Greywalker novella, "The Third Death of the Little Clay Dog," which I enjoyed rereading.

The fantasy-buddy story "Peacock in Hell" spins acrobatically on a perfect twist ending.

This will be a delight for fans of the writer's work. I don't recommend it as an introduction; I think the first Greywalker book, Greywalker gives you a better idea of her work.

As always, this book was, paradoxically, a great, quick read and something to savor. This is the problem with Ms. Richardson's writing - it is so good that I cannot wait to read it - and then when i have started, I want to really enjoy every word. With a volume of short stories, this is a little easier - I can dole out the pleasure over time. I thoroughly enjoyed these stories - great characters and enough of familiar characters to remind the reader of how fun the Greywalker series is. Get this book, enjoy, and then read or re-read the Greywalker series!

Nicely crafted short stories

Nice collection of short stories with the Harper Blaine story being the best. Wide variety of topics made the stories more invigorating.

3 1/2 stars. Really decent collection of stories. Some are better than others, but none were duds.
