I found this book by John Weir Perry to have insight and comfort for those who experience existential crises and syndromes that challenge the status quo of societal expectations. Understanding the diversity of human experiences, including psychological and spiritual, is a weakness of our current systems. I subtracted one star from my review of what would other be almost a 5 star review because of the reflections of Perry on practice experiences and modalities; I would have preferred a more succinct, more timeless presentation of theory and practice.

Gave it 5-stars because It is very special in the way it treats the subject. It gives an alternative view to the self-defeated way of viewing mental illness predominant in contemporary psychiatry. But it is not a page-turner and I must say you get the general idea by page 50, it can be technical sometimes and it is mixed with observations about the facility that Perry used to treat the individuals. Still, very good read.

It’s satisfying to read this book written by my grandfather and be so genuinely personally interested in all of the material. I hold these ideas close to my heart.
