Everything comes at a cost. Is love worth the price?
They say I've got it all. But half my identity is a mystery. When I’m traded to Pittsburgh’s pro soccer team, I know I need to solve the secret of my origins.
I just need to stay focused on my game in the meantime.
Easier said than done.
I had to go and meet a woman who’s just not that into me, and I can’t get her out of my head.
Lucy Nelson is so fierce. She’s raising her kid on her own and working hard to build a future…as part of the coaching staff for my team. She’s got priorities and apparently they don’t include a cocky soccer player, no matter how charming I try to be.
As far as Lucy’s concerned, I’m only good for one thing.
But I’m a midfielder. I’m used to playing offense and defense. I’m not afraid of Lucy’s baggage, especially with backup from a trio of brothers I didn’t know I had.
Beautiful Game is a stand-alone contemporary sports romance with crackling tension and sizzling passion. If you love meddling side characters, secret siblings, and single moms who finally find trust, you’ll swoon for this installment of the Stag Brothers series.
This is book 5 of the Stag Brothers series and I was a little worried going in that I would be confused since I haven’t read the previous books - but Davis explains just enough that I didn’t feel lost or that the previous characters took over the story.
I love single parent tropes, however Lainey Davis and narrator Nikola Muckajev are new to me so I was apprehensive going into this. I’m so glad I gave it a try. I truly enjoyed Hawk & Lucy’s story.
Hawk is a newly transferred soccer player and Lucy recently became a fitness coach on the same team. Davis brought a lot of depth to this story with Lucy’s battles with her ex, Hawk discovering his siblings, and a unique twist with Lucy not only knowing his sport well but also being in a supervisory position over Hawk. Charmingly mixed in all this was sexy romance, a cute kid, and supportive family and friends.
There was a little angst, but it wasn’t pointless or dragging and I enjoyed Lucy finally falling for a determined Hawk. Loved the epilogue and the HEA for this deserving couple.
I immediately grabbed The Stag Brothers box set so I can dive into Tim, Ty, & Thatcher’s stories.
Narration: I enjoyed Nikola Muckajev’s performance. As the chapters alternated perspectives, I liked that he changed his affect to correspond with Hawk or Lucy’s perspective. He had a solid range of character voices that differentiated everyone well. I’m looking forward to enjoying more of his narrations.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Home Cooked Books and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Beautiful Game by Lainey Davis is the fifth book in her Stag Brothers Series. It can be read/listened to standalone. I am intrigued by the other characters stories but didn’t feel lost or confused by not having read their stories previously.
Hawk is a professional soccer player, he is new in Pittsburgh as he has been recently traded. He is adjusting to a new team, and a new city and newly found siblings. Lucy is a single mom, and leaving an abusive relationship. Her priority is her and her son’s safety. She has started a new job as the fitness coach. Hawk and Lucy had fantastic chemistry. For Lucy she cannot allow her heart to get too involved due to her history with her ex and the forbidden element that she and Hawk work together. I loved Hawk’s persistence with Lucy. He was patient, protective and didn’t give up easily on Lucy’s resistance to more with him. He had such an adorable relationship with her son, and I loved the support he found amongst his brothers.
I was pleasantly surprised by the level of emotion in this book. Knowing it was a sport romance I didn’t expect this at all, and loved this aspect.
Nikola Muckajev told both male and female points of view and while it surprised me at first, I adjusted quickly and think he did a good job changing his pitch and range to differentiate the male and female roles. His voice is sexy and smooth and kept me engaged and connected to the storyline.
I look forward to more by both this author and narrator.
Audiobook received from Home Cooked Books in exchange of my honest review.
Fantastic Story & Audio Listen🎧 Gripping & Delightfully Heartfelt!
Beautiful Game Stag Brothers, Book 5 By: Lainey Davis Narrated by: Nikola Muckajev
Lainey Davis pens another fabulous sports romance novel and surprises us with another amazing Stag brother. If you are new to the Stag brothers series, no worries, it is a standalone, though I highly recommend the books in the series which are available in a box set for your reading and/or listening pleasure and what a pleasure they are. Hawk Moyer is a professional soccer ball player who was just traded to the last city he wanted to play in, Pittsburgh. Brought up by a single Mom who never revealed who his father was, the only thing he knows is that he was from Pittsburgh. But this team, The Forge, is trying to make a better name for themselves and he plans to do just that and make them shine. The only good thing that came out of Lucy Nelson’s marriage was her son, Wyatt, she may have gotten away from her abusive husband, but he is not letting her go and continues to make her life a living hell. She worries about her son when he visits him and her worst fears came to fruition, a good samaritan rescued Wyatt from a dangerous situation, that good samaritan, Patty, became good friends with Lucy too. Lucy worked with athletes before and when a new job opportunity comes her way, she jumps on it and becomes the new strength and conditioning coach for the Forge. Hawk felt an attraction to Lucy the moment he laid eyes on her, but she is not ready to get involved with another man, regardless of of how she feels about him or that the chemistry between them is sizzling hot. I thought these two were great together and for each other, they just got each other, and he was understanding about her struggles as a single mom and wanted to help her deal with her abusive ex-husband. And the way he learns who is his father and that he has brothers was priceless, the way the Stags handled it was too, you got to love those guys. I loved how everything played out in book, it is a beautifully written and plotted story with plenty of drama, heartfelt and emotional moments, charming and heartwarming moments and a romance to be remembered. Lainey Davis, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Lainey Davis chose the perfect narrator to bring her characters and their story to life. Nikola Mucajev is a talented narrator and versatile voice artists, he does an amazing job covering the voices for all the characters, giving each their own distinct sound, making it easy to follow and tell who is who. He has a complete understanding of the characters he is portraying, gives each a voice that suits the character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable in every role he plays and just as I picture to character to sound. He sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into his performance. Nikola Muckajev is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fabulous listen.
Beautiful Game is book five in the Stag brother series and even though this book is part of a series it is a stand-alone workplace, sports romance that is not only smoking hot but also pulls at your heart strings and is full to the brim with amazing side characters who love to meddle and secret siblings with a flock of kids that will have you hooked from start to finish. As a pro athlete Hawk Moyer appears to have it all, fame, fortune, a successful soccer career. However, family is a sore subject for Hawk. Having never had his father in his life part of his identity is a mystery and after a transfer to the Pittsburgh Forge soccer team in a $1 million deal, the initial fear he feels gives way to a determination to get to the bottom of the absentee father who makes up the other half of his gene pool. Hawk wants to concentrate on his work and not letting his new team down but before he can even kick a ball on the pitch, he meets single mum Lucy and her four-year-old son Wyatt and becomes besotted and protective with both mother and son. Lucy is a survivor and a super protective mamma bear after finally breaking free from her son’s abusive father and the man who not only mentally and emotionally abused her but isolated her from everyone with his coercive controlling behaviour. Lucy is grateful to a beautiful stranger for not only going to her son’s rescue (who Wyatt aptly names She-Ra) when he was supposed to be under the care of his father but also being a saviour to her and giving her some semblance of a normal life again by introducing her to an incredible group of women/mothers who play soccer once a week. Lucy’s life is looking up and when she secures her dream job as a strength and conditioning coach for the Pittsburgh Forge Soccer team it means she’ll not only be spending more time with the new all-star signing Hawk who has it bad for her, but she’ll also be getting up close and personal with him. Soon sparks are flying between the two, but it was Hawks relationship with Wyatt that had my ovaries exploding, plus I loved the way Hawks brothers not only embraced him but the way they help and protect Lucy and Wyatt is so beautiful it brought me to tears. This book is narrated solely by the extremely talented Nikola Muckajev and he does an incredible job of bringing Hawk and Lucy to life as well as lending his voice to the many great side characters. Nikola brought light and shade to the performance which helped to build the angst while showing the softer sides to the characters that built sexual tension that ended in a totally swoony HEA. A truly wonderful sports romance that gave me all the feels. My very first Lainey Davis book and it certainly won’t be my last, I loved her storytelling. First on my list of more from this amazing author will be the spending some time with the rest of the Stag brothers as I enjoyed Tim, Ty and Thatcher in this book.
(audiobook) We were supposed to be done with the Stag brothers after four books–one for each brother, plus a Christmas special–but the author brought a secret brother!
Hawk is a soccer player who never knew his father, just that he had to stay away from Pittsburgh where he might still live. Until he’s traded just there. Expected to be the new star in a troubled team, his personal struggles affect his game. And due to the fact that he was raised by a single mother who was taken advantage by a man, he’s avoiding serious relationships, until he meets Lucy and her little boy.
Lucy has been abused–not physically though–by her ex-husband with whom she has joined custody. But he doesn’t leave her alone. She has anxiety, she doesn’t trust, especially men, and lives solely for her son. Until an unfortunate incident brings her back on the turf in an amateur all female soccer team. All of a sudden, she’s getting support, opportunities, and a love interest.
I liked that, although Lucy’s and Hawk’s lives change after they meet, it happens independantly of each other. They have barely any influence on each other’s lives, really, though they provide support and comfort, and sometimes protection. They grow by themselves, but together.
The main theme of the book is clearly fatherhood, more specifically bad fatherhood. Between Hawk’s absent father and Lucy’s abusive ex-husband, we get a couple of examples, making by contrast Hawk’s relationship with Lucy’s son even more #fatherhoodgoal. Plus Hawk gets some closure for his own daddy issues, thanks to his half brothers. Really family, what it should be, and what’s considered a bad one, is at the center of the story.
There’s some sexy time, but it always involve deeper feelings which was kind of nice.
The narrator did good, though I wasn’t a fan of his female voices. The various voices were mostly recognizable, and the proper emotions and emphases were present.
Quickie
- Series: Stag brothers #5 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #sports romance #soccer #single mother #secret brother - Triggers: psychological abuse, talk about alcoholism - Main couple: Lucy Nelson & Hawk Moyer - Hotness: 4/5 - Romance: 4/5 - + Hawk slowly surrounding himself with people–teammates, friends, family–was nice to see - – the narrator’s female voices often sounded hysterical
Fantastic! What a brilliant introduction to Lainey Davis, and the Stag Brothers series. Now I'll immediately be going back and reading the 4 earlier books. I have a couple of her other ebooks in my collection, and I'm not sure why I've been sitting on them so long - this was incredible writing, incredible storytelling, and even better as an audiobook!
I loved the soccer themed story, that a single mom (Lucy) found friendships and also along the way, stumbled onto a relationship that she could trust. And while exploring a relationship, her whole life started to finally fall into place. At the same time, Hawk's life took a whole new direction, as he was traded to a new team, found the woman he was immediately attracted to (love at first sight??), is living finally closer to his mother, but at the same time that means living closer to the bio-dad he doesn't know, and now suddenly that whole situation explodes. While Lucy is fighting custody issues, Hawk is fighting bio-dad and newfound family issues, and hopefully they can lean on each other instead of pushing each other away.
It's a quick read, with soccer as the uniting theme throughout, and the audio really enhances the whole thing. Nikola Muckajev is a new-to-me narrator, but I found that I was immediately drawn to his voice. I enjoyed his performance, and he did both Lucy and Hawk's parts extremely well. I will definitely be looking for more works by him!
All-in-all, I definitely recommend this book, and definitely the audio version, to everybody - for all, but really for those who like single parent romances, sports/soccer romances, love at first sight, and especially those who love stories about characters trying to figure themselves out after a biological family reveal as an adult, and the ones battling custody with deadbeats.
I received an advance listen copy from Lainey Davis and Home Cooked Books, and this is my honest feedback.
Beautiful Game by Lainey Davis pulled me in from the very beginning. I love single mom/soccer player romances and this one hit it spot on. Lucy is a single mom with her priority focused on her son Wyatt. She meets another mom and they click as friends and doors open to advancing her career. Simultaneously she meets Hawk and has great chemistry with him, before encountering him professionally. I loved how the author wrote the story and developed the characters. I felt like I was watching it play out. Nicola Mucajev brought the characters to life through his distinguishable voices for the numerous characters. I could envision so many details with this book.
Lucy a single mother and Hawk is a pro soccer player. They meet at a soccer game and sparks fly. Hawk's dealing with finding out who his father is. Lucy's dealing with custody issues. These two are so well written for each other. I like all the characters and the narrators voice just fit so good. The steamy parts didn't even bother me. I'm so glad a found another new to me author, I love it. Since this is book five I had to go back and listen to the other four, maybe Lainey's other books too.
Beautiful Game is book 5 in the Stag Brothers series by Lainey Davis. Although it would have enhanced the story to have read the other books in the series first, I got enough of a background of the entire Stag family to thoroughly enjoy Beautiful Game. Book 5 focuses on soccer star Hawk Moyer. We get Hawk’s path to find love as well as the missing pieces of his own family tree.
In addition to the author being new to me, this was the first time I listened to narrator Nikola Muckajev. He is terrific here. He has such a smooth and soothing voice and does a great job giving each character a distinctive voice.
Ms. Davis gives Muckajev so much to work with in this emotional story. Hawk has been recently traded to Pittsburgh. So naturally the one woman who has caught his attention is hired by the team as their fitness coach. Their chemistry is off the charts and Hawk is determined to pursue Lucy. Lucy is a single mom who has just come out of an abusive relationship. What I loved here is how Hawk understands her hesitancy to jump into a new relationship and respects her need to take things slow. He is willing to take his time with her and adapt to her pace so that she feels safe and cherished which is beautiful to watch unfold. I also loved how quickly he took to Lucy’s son, Wyatt. Wyatt is her world and Hawk doesn’t hesitate at all in embracing him and playing the role of protector of both him and his mom.
In addition to the love story, a big part of the book is Hawk’s own need for answers to questions he has always had about his father. His mother raised him alone and has been unwilling to discuss who his father is. His journey to get the answers he needs isn’t an easy one but in the end it’s well worth it when he finally has the family he has always longed for.
All in all, Beautiful Game was a very enjoyable story and I look forward to more from both the author, Lainey Davis, as well as narrator Nikola Muckajev.
(Audio Review) This was definitely a whirlwind of emotions. I was definitely on the edge of my seat throughout!
Before I get ahead of myself though... First things first, ‘Beautiful Game’ is book 5 of ‘Stag Brothers’ series, but can be read as a standalone.
Here, we meet our main characters, Hawk Moyer and Lucy Nelson. After a transfer to the soccer team of his birth city (Pittsburgh), Hawk decides to finally find out more about the other half of his family whom he never knew. Whilst there, he meets Lucy, a single mum, who recently broke free from her abusive ex and who now works closely with Hawk. With all that going on, this new attraction forming between them is very complicated, and Lucy feels that her other priorities should take precedent over any possible budding romance between herself and Hawk.
This book was so unexpected for me. All the characters were so loveable and I especially loved the chemistry between our hero and heroine. It was *chef’s kiss*. I could definitely feel the attraction, and later, the love he had for her, and vice versa.
This book also covered heavier topics in the form of Lucy’s abusive ex. It was interesting to see all that she had to go through just to keep herself and her son safe. But, I’m glad she persevered and I loved how Hawk was there for Lucy when she needed him the most.
I also loved Hawk’s friendship with Lucy’s son and how her past didn’t deter him. Plus, I really enjoyed the new forming relationship that Hawk had with his brothers.
I honestly cannot think of much that I disliked about this book. Well, except maybe that I wished it was longer; I loved these characters so much, I wanted to see more. But, I guess that’s a good problem to have.
I listened to the audio version of this book. Narrated solely by Nikola Muckajev, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the narration as much as I did. But, I truly loved it! Muckajev did such a fantastic job at both the voices of both main characters, as well as, all the other side characters. I also felt the emotions within the book was conveyed very well. It was excellent!
Honestly, this book is soo good. I recommend picking it up!
I was provided a free advanced audio copy of this book. However, all opinions shared are my honest thoughts about this book.
Lainey Davis is a new to me author and it will not be the last book I read that is written by her. “Beautiful Game” is a story about second chances and finding yourself again after having to start over.
Hawk Moyer is a star soccer player and has been just traded to a new team. The team he has been to has had some recent problems but they are looking to turn it around. Lucy is new in town after divorcing her husband who had put her son’s life in danger. She’s also the newest coach on the team. A relationship is the last thing she needs but the chemistry they have can’t be denied.
I loved the plot of this story. Hawk grew up not knowing who his father was and coming to the new team, allowed him to find the parts of his family tree that were missing. Hawk starts out as the overconfident athlete and his genuine personality wanting to help Lucy wins you over. Lucy was so strong with everything she was dealing with. Lucy went through some terrible things and was doing everything she could to change her future. I loved every interaction between Hawk and Lucy’s son, Wyatt. It was so adorable the bond the two formed.
Nikola Muckajev narrated this book solo and I loved his narration. The story is told from both Lucy and Hawk’s POV. It threw me off for a second that a man was narrating Lucy’s part but he did an amazing job at portraying Lucy. He was a new to me narrator and I’m looking forward to listening to more books narrated by him.
What a story!! This one has it all! It took me on a ride of emotions. Happy, worried, thrilled…and all the tummy flutters (not really an emotion but it counts). The story had me glued to my earbuds as I could not get enough of it or the characters. The theme of soccer was fun for me as its a different sport that isn’t written about a lot then add in the workplace romance and outstanding characters this author made a goal!
I really cherished getting to know these main characters. They each had a struggle to figure out how to overcome. Watching Lucy grow and become a version of herself she could respect is inspiring. Likewise Hawk became the man he always wanted to be. These two together are delightful.
All of the characters are wonderful(yes even the bad ones). Each has a definite purpose that either put a smile on my face or made me irritated with their actions. Of course the best ones are the secret family. I enjoyed every time they came on screen.
This is a first time author for me. I enjoyed the smooth transitional story and the characters so I will need to check out the brothers stories now. I did listen to this on audio. Nikola Muckajev is a new to me narrator. He did an excellent job on all the voices and I could easily listen to him again.
This was my first book by Lainey Davis AND my first audiobook narrated by Nikola Muskajev. I would definitely listen to both again.
Beautiful game is a stand alone as part of a series, but it wasn't a problem that I hadn't listened to the other books first. I don't know how much overlaps with previous books in the series, but I felt like Hawk and Lucy's story was separated from the rest. After this one, I am interested in listening to the others and I don't feel like they would be spoiled. Beautiful Game was part single parent, part sports, part forbidden romance, and I would give it 4.5 stars.
The narration was definitely 5 stars. I prefer dual narrators for first person alternating pov, but Nikola did amazingly well for a single narrator. He is definitely in the voice actor category and I love how his performance brings the story to life. He has distinct voices for Hawk and Lucy, and I even like his female voice for Lucy's chapters which can be tricky. You can hear his female voice in the audio sample.
I received a copy of the audiobook at my request, and the opinions here are my own.
This is book 5 in Davis' Stag Brothers series and I loved this read / listen! This is the first book in the series I've gotten and it can be read / listened to as a stand alone. Narration by Nikola Muckajev was perfectly done and able to change pitch and tone for our two main characters - Hawk and Lucy beautifully. I love the push pull these two have from the very beginning. Hawk is a well known soccer player traded to a city he doesn't want to be in and has instant chemistry with Lucy - a single mom who is struggling to come to grips with her past mistakes. This book has the perfect balance of sweet, steam and humor - oh how I adore these Stag brothers now and want to know everything I can about them. I adore their dynamic! Well done all around and I can't wait for more!!!
I received a free copy of this book at my request and I voluntarily provided this review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read.
This is the fifth book in the Stag Brothers series, a Sports Romance. Hawk and Lucy's story is sweet and heartwarming. The storyline is interesting, and filled with drama, secrets, and twists and turns. Hawk is handsome, charming, supportive and caring. Lucy is smart, strong, and determined. I loved to follow them in their journey to love. Lucy's son Wyatt is so cute! I loved Hawk's brothers. They are handsome, and supportive, and I would love to know more about them. Nikola Muckajev did a great job with the narration. I enjoyed it.
Beautiful Game is Book 5 of the Stage Brother Series by Lainey Davis. Lucy is a single mom of an adorable toddler, Wyatt. While Lucy struggles to leave an abusive relationship, fight for custody, and find herself - She also finds Hawk. Hawk, famous soccer player in a new city, new team and working on his own issues. This is my first audio with Nikola Muckajev. I will say while I wasn't automatically sold, by chapter 2 I was looking up other books Nikola narrated. I will be listening to more for sure. I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't your typical single mom looking for a rich guy to complete the family story. Lucy was strong, she overcame everything that was thrown at her and she thrived through it. I really loved watching Lucy and Wyatt grow. Hawk wasn't without issues of his own. WIth his past he was able to find ways to help Lucy without overstepping. Also - How Wyatt greeted Hawk was the best!
This is my first book by Lainey Davis and it was wonderful.
This is a wonderful story of two people that find each other at the perfect time.
A single mom, Lucy, is working hard to take care of her and her son. She had a horrible ex husband, father of her son who has resurfaced and is causing her issues.
Hawk is a professional soccer player that is not looking for a relationship. Hawk has unanswered questions from his past and is trying to find resolution.
The chemistry between Lucy and Hawk is undeniable. Their relationship is so natural and beautiful. They help each other in ways they didn’t anticipate.
Nikola Muckajev is the single narrator for this book and does an amazing job. The emotion he brings to each character is fantastic! He is a new to me narrator and I’m looking forward to listening to his other work.
Started out ok- I love football (soccer) - but it stumbled into inappropriate secret affair that veered into fuck buddy territory. I just don’t do fuck buddy. Hate it with a passion, and hate the term. So it is a big, fat DNF from me.
I lost myself in Hawk and Lucy’s incredible story. Lucy was fierce and protective and willing to sacrifice anything for the safety and well-being of her child. Hawk’s confidence came off as cockiness at first, but his relationship with Lucy peeled back his layers to reveal his true heart. It was well written and didn’t shy away from the sensitive subjects. It had raw and real elements that gave me a deeper connection to the characters and their personal struggles and I felt invested in their journey. This was my first book by this author and I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the Stag Brother stories.
It was a successful collaboration between Lainey Davis and Nikola Muckajev. Nikola’s amazing voice brought each one of Lainey’s wonderful characters to life.
Hawk is determined to play his best soccer in Pittsburg, even if the identity of his absent father threatens to blow his focus. Lucy has a new job and she needs to keep it to raise her son alone, while waiting the trial against her abusive ex-partner. When Hawk and Lucy first met, the attraction is instinct but now they work together and Lucy has everything to lose if she gets involved with Hawk. Can they fight their feeling while trying to solve their own problems? An steamy love story about family, second chances and new beginnings. The audiobook is great. Nikola is a great narrator and he makes the characters and their feelings very real.
The narrators were fantastic! Really brought this story to life. This is a beautifully written story of a single mother trying to protect her child and rebuild her life after getting free from an abusive man. In the process she meets Hawk and sparks fly from first meet. Hawk helps Lucy in many ways while dealing with his own life challenges. Very realistic and easy to relate to. The Stag brothers bring them into the family fold and from there life only gets better for Hawk, Lucy and her son. A definite roller coaster of events brings out so many emotions from one minute to the next. Love this book. A must read.
I loved the original Stag brothers and in this book we meet a long lost half brother who I think might be my favorite.
Lucy and Hawk’s love story is really sweet and even though this isn’t a long book I was able to feel their connection and it’s hits on a trope I love where the Hero falls fast and pursues the heroine.
There are themes of child endangerment, domestic emotional abuse, abandonment issues, but this wasn’t a heavy or emotional book.
This was just a nice low angst, quick read with a swoon worthy guy
I listened this and I would recommend the audio and the narrator Nikolai Muckajev 👍🏼
Book 5 in the series it stands alone perfectly. If you're like me and this is your first venture into the Stag Brothers world, you will have no issues following along. You can tell there's background and more story to understand but you will never be lost, just left with the desire to explore more of the back list.
Lucy is a single mom who got herself and her son away from her excessively controlling ex. She now is very sensitive to trusting others. Enter an amazing group of women who invite her to play soccer and she builds friendships, a new network of people she can ask for help (not that she ever wants to) and who help her rebuild her life in the most amazing way.
Hawk is the son of a single mom who won't tell him anything about his father. He's a pro soccer player who has been traded to the city he never wanted to play in. It's his first hometown and around any corner could be the man who gave him half his DNA. Though his mother's story is different from Lucy's he still finds a lot of empathy for her. He wants to spend time with her, he wants to help her even though he doesn't know all the details of what is going on.
Together, Lucy and Hawk find ways to build trust with each other and with those around them, including Hawk's newly discovered bio family complete with 3 big brothers who will meddle in his life and support his plans to help gain Lucy's trust and her heart.
The audiobook for this story was performed by Nikola Muckajev. The story is told in dual POV but with only one narrator it gives it more of a cast feel since the voices are consistent through the whole book. Nikola does a great job of presenting both Hawk and Lucy's voices (dialog and internal narration) and the emotions he pulled were great. Frustration, fear, joy, reluctance, passion.... it was all there. And I have to comment him for all the kid voices. Lucy's son is 4 and makes friends early on with twin boys. Then we start to bring in all of Hawk's newfound nephews.... I'm a sucker for a well performed kid voice and I was not disappointed here.
I was provided an advance copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
Pour a glass of wine, grab the Kleenex and snuggle up for this emotionally-charged sports romance! This is my first book by Lainey Davis, and it definitely won’t be my last! The Soccer star and the Single mom. Traded to a team marred by scandal, Hawk Moyer reluctantly adjusts to life and soccer in a new city. Lucy Nelson is struggling to distance herself from her abusive ex and delinquent father to her young son, Wyatt. Temps rise and sparks fly when the growly soccer star meets the sweet, shy single mom! Can “Hawk the hottie” break down her walls and show her what a kind, thoughtful, stable man is like?
From their first meeting to the epilogue, the evolution of Lucy & Hawk’s relationship was a joy to read. Their friendship and romance is beautiful on and off the field. I love that Lainey wrote a heroine in pro sports! Lucy holds her own and squashes any skepticism buzzing about her abilities in a male-dominated field. The natural and respectful way Hawk approaches a relationship with Wyatt is endearing. Lainey Davis writes big family romance wonderfully. Although this is book five in a series, i didn’t feel lost or like I was missing something for a second. However, I am utterly intrigued by the Stag family and can’t wait to read the rest of their HEAs. Lainey’s characters are warm, genuine, and all flow in and out of the story nicely. Beautiful Game is about second chances, found family, fiercely strong women, and fighting for what you love. Lainey shows us the beauty that can come from accepting a helping hand and building a community you can rely on.
Nikola Muckajev is a new-to-me narrator and I really enjoyed his voice! He has great pacing and cadence. The way he brought the growly, seductive soccer star to life was masterful. Beautiful game has quite a few emotionally raw moments. Nikola performed them perfectly. There were a couple instances when I couldn’t tell whether he was voicing Lucy or Hawk, but overall he crushed this performance. I’ll be seeking out more books he’s narrated. If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming, steamy tear-jerker romance audio, grab Beautiful Game! You’ll fall in love with Lucy & Hawk and the whole Stag family.
A professional soccer player gets an opportunity to play in the last city he wanted, but finds more than one reason to stay once he gets there.
Hawk Moyer has done well in his career and at age 25 gets an opportunity to move to a different team with the goal of living close to his mom. Instead of Ohio as he was hoping, he gets an offer from Pittsburgh, which is a city that holds ghosts from his past.
Lucy is a single mom who finds herself grateful for the help of a stranger and gives her an opportunity to play on a women's recreational soccer team. Her ex-husband has made her life difficult as a single mom. Soon Lucy finds that this new opportunity for friendship will be helpful for not only friendship, but also a career as a fitness trainer for the Pittsburgh Fury.
Before Lucy became Hawk's trainer, the two shared an evening that led to a deep connection and shared attraction. Once Lucy's opportunity for her dream job comes her way, she tries to keep her relationship with Hawk only professional. As Hawk tries to be understanding of Lucy's situation, he can't give up on her no matter how hard he tries. As each one goes through personal challenges, the other comes alongside to assist as a friend who genuinely cares. Their situation feels unlikely to lead to a relationship, until neither one can no longer fight their feelings.
The beginning of this story pulled me in immediately. I was excited by the unique premise and evident sexual tension. But then just when things get interesting, the intimacy story goes stagnant and non existent. A bizarre one sided friendzone is established that lacks intensity at becoming more. Both protagonists have a lot going on that distracts from their growing relationship, but it feels like the opportunity to build their emotional intimacy was missing. The HEA is good with a sweet epilogue. I'm thankful we got one chapter of the two living happy. Wonderful bonus epilogue.
Bonus: The Stag Brothers make an appearance 5 years after Thatcher's story.

This series is hands down one of my favorites ever! I was a bit sad after Thatcher and Emma’s book, thinking that would be the end of the Stag brothers. And the came A Stag Family Christmas, which I loved. But I wasn’t expecting this book and a secret Stag brother, but I sure am happy about it! This book was amazing!
Hawk Moyer is a sexy and cocky pro athlete. But underneath all that, there’s a vulnerable side. He’s always felt like he was missing something by not knowing his dad. Lucy has had it rough. She’s a divorced single mom struggling to get by and keep her son safe all while fighting for his custody. They each begin a new chapter in their lives when they start with the Forge soccer team. Can Hawk work through his daddy issues to become the player the team needs? Can Lucy finally start to believe in herself and fight for her and her son’s future? But more importantly, can Hawk and Lucy fight their undeniable attraction? I absolutely loved this book! Hawk was the perfect blend of cocky, sexy, sweet, and concerned when it came to Lucy. His interactions with Wyatt had my ovaries sighing! I also loved Lucy and Wyatt. My heart ached for them and what they’d been through. Hawk’s growing relationship with his brother was so dang heartwarming! I loved how Tim, Ty, and Thatcher just brought him right into the fold! I love these characters so much that I don’t ever want to say goodbye. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This review is my own honest opinion.
Beautiful Game Stag Brothers Book 5 By Lainey Davis Narrated by Nikola Muckajev
If I listen to a sports romance, I am definitely partial to soccer. It's the game of choice in our house, so it makes it so easy to relate to. This book pushed all the right buttons for me. Hawk has been transferred to Pittsburgh. Not his city of choice, as it holds some very bad feelings. He will be closer to his mom, so that is a plus. Lucy has just started her new path too with the team, hoping to prove herself and gain a permanent position. Little do these two know how they will influence each other. Lainey Davis has won my heart with the book. From the revelations Hawk has, finding his true place and love to Lucy's achievements and success, this couple is one that I could not help but root for from the start. Hawk is a difficult nut to crack. At first I was a little frustrated with his attitude, but came on board as I got to know him better and understand him. Lucy is fantastic! Doting mother, but strong and independent, I love her ambition and drive. Together, Hawk and Lucy are the kind of couple I enjoy. They are realistic and easy to fall for. Plus meeting the Stag brothers is a total plus! Now I have to go back and get to know each of them! Things I look forward to.
Nikola Muckajev is a new to me narrator and I thought he was wonderful. Easy pace, voices to match the personalities of the characters and just the right amounts of emotion to make the story flow and seem real. His transitions between characters is flawless. I will definitely be watching for more from him.
This was another great read (in this case listen) from Lainey Davis. The Stag family was one of the first books I’ve read in the adult romance genre and I’ve been in love with the Stags ever since. At first I was a bit worried with the storyline and what it would do to the family dynamics. I needed not to worry.
Without going into too much detail. Hawk is in Pittsburg to play soccer for the local team and Lucy is a single mom in need of a kind hand to help her get her life back on track and away from her abusive former partner. When they meet the connection is strong and hard to resist. Their journey has its ups&downs and in true Lainey Davis fashion it depicts a real life story where the characters have real life problems, real life jobs and real life aspirations.
The narrator Nikola Muckajev was a new narrator to me. The story is told as dual POV and both characters are narrated by Muckajev. The narration is so good it’s difficult to believe both points of view are narrated by the same person. The male character voice is especially good.
Beautiful Game is the fifth and final book in the Stag Brothers series. This brother is a half-brother who no one knew about. He is a professional soccer player who finds out who his father is thanks to an ambush by a local journalist at a press conference. Tim Stag is the attorney for the team and finds out at the same time. Hawk’s story is about his search for identity and family.
Lucy is a single mother who escaped an abusive marriage (not yet physically) and is struggling to provide for her son and herself while fighting to protect themselves from her ex and his awful parents. Lucy is hired as the strengthening and conditioning coach of Hawk’s team. Her relationship with Hawk grows from there. Her journey is about finding her family of creation and triumphing over her abuser.
It is a good story with some spice. Definite cw/tw for discussion of historical abuse and current stalking.
