A basic guide on what foods you should keep in preparation for emergencies, such as canned goods and dry food such as rice, oats etc.

All of which I had an understanding of, but there was still a benefit of me reading this as there's detailed information on preserving, pickling and dehydrating food.

A decent beginners guide to prepping for emergencies.

This book is chalk full of information. Shopping lists, long-term food storage, canning and preserving...a little of everything that you’re looking for. And I love the references at the end! The references confirm for me that this book is well researched and it allows me to do a deeper dive. I also appreciate that the author’s real-world experience and knowledge are woven into the book. A worthy read.

I can’t believe I’m even writing this, but this was less good than the other two books of his I’ve read. What qualifications does he have to write on the nutritional benefits of garlic, exactly? A lot of the good information in the book is either common sense, has (or should have) been covered in his other books or can be googled very easily (how to can cabbage, anyone?). The rest is nothing more than filler. He stretched this out a lot, using the example of covid 19 to show how prepping is so important because anything can happen at any given time. Well. I wasn’t a prepped for such a disaster and ate my way through covid 19 just fine, thanks. In fact, I’m still displaying those ice cream, pasta and wine related calories around the tummy area years later despite my best efforts, and I think I’m not the only one (for information, it was the lack of activity not the change in diet - except maybe the wine - that was so blame). Yes, there is good advice and common sense in this book, but the implication that human nature is not resourceful enough to mean we can’t manage these sorts of difficulties is frustrating. That said, I’m sure Ted and his fellow preppers were more healthy, well fed and smug than most during those pandemic years. What can I say. Take all this with a pitch of the recommended kosher salt and it’s not a bad starter for ten if you have no idea about why buying in bulk might be cheap than not, but don’t expect to find anything super ground breaking here. Would make a better than average blog post though…

The Prepper’s Pantry is different from other books on building pantry stock. Instead of telling you what to stock, the author breaks down nutritional needs in a healthy diet and how to incorporate them into long term storage.
The first chapters of the book offers information on with nutrition the importance of a balanced pantry, this in itself is so vastly different than the typical
”rice, bean, seeds, and bullets” of your typical preparedness book! Many of us prep for rough financial times or medical crises and would love to know how to live with our pantries as a daily lifestyle rather than just ” the end of times! Chapters follow with the how to’s of bulk shopping, long-term storage methods and specific preservation methods and gives detailed examples of various foods and the nutrients they offer that can be stocked with each method. (including spices and vitamins!) The book gives the reader information on how each long storage option works together to offer a variety of nutritious and healthy foods. I especially appreciated the end-of-chapter recap.
This is not a go out and buys these foods book, This is a ”how to decide what to go out a buy book”. And is a must read for anyone that wants to build a long term pantry.

Ugh! Another worthless entry in survivalist Ted Riley’s prepper series.

This book is mostly a list of foods with specifics on their nutritional benefits. Information that’s good to know, but would be more effectively presented in a cookbook focused on nutritional meals that could be prepared in a grid down situation.

When he gets to specifics about different kinds of canning, dehydrating, and pickling, he gives these step-by-step directions where he’s trying to be specific, but caveats are just the norm when you’re preserving your own food.

Same thing with storing food long-term. You need to know which type of storage solution will work not just for the type of food, but also for where you’ll be storing that food.

While Riley gets the message across that people should be careful when preparing and storing food for long-term storage, his book barely scratches the surface of the knowledge and skills you’ll need.

And then he adds these helpful hints like, watch for sales at your grocery store, and when possible combine with coupons to buy extras for your deep pantry. If people need to be told this one, maybe they should be naturally selected to not survive the zombie apocalypse.

I wouldn't consider myself a prepper in the traditional (American) sense. I don't own a gun and live off grid. But I think Covid has shown us that things can be beyond our control, and that includes food supply.
This book is a good antidote to the fear you might have felt walking into a supermarket and seeing only empty shelves. It tells you how to store staples, how to make what you can grow last all year, and a 'canning for dummies' section!
My main two takeaways from this book - don't stockpile food you don't like (sounds obvious but it's true), and vitamins in tablet form last longer than capsules and may be beneficial beyond their best before date (i.e better than nothing if shtf).

This isn't really the most in depth book on prepping there is. However, it wasn't a bad book. This book is a good way to get your feet wet if you've considered prepping, to any degree. It gives you the most important bullet points of key factors such as canning, buying in bulk, stocking up, etc. It gives you an idea on things, gets the juices flowing in the old noggin, and is helpful in that if gives you enough knowledge that you can branch off on your own to do more research on topics thst you found the most interesting.

Perhaps it's me, but this one simply wasn't as useful as others from the same author. It felt particularly shallow in that anyone who has reached the stage of reading books for "preppers" probably already knows that a chest freezer is a good idea or that gardening is a great way to have more food. These aren't novel ideas and the author did not dive in deep enough to really add anything.

I'm still giving it 3 stars, though, because it does have some useful tables with canning times and vitamin requirements that I may refer back to in the future.

This book had a lot of very useful information in it. I really liked the way it was written so that anyone could read it and learn from it. Not full of a bunch of long, hard, unnecessary things.

Helpful

Stayed on topic and didn't go down the rabbit hole. Good information, presented in a reasonable manner. I may need to buy a physical copy.
