Mirabelle #4

Mirabelle in Double Trouble

Rate this book
Mirabelle is going on holiday with her family to a fancy witch resort and she can't wait! She has promised her parents that she will absolutely not get up to mischief this time. And she really means it too.
The witch resort is everything Mirabelle had hoped for, and more! Better yet, she makes a new friend called Bea. Then Mirabelle makes a worrying discovery-Bea is even more mischievous than Mirabelle, and she quickly finds herself in a whole heap of trouble . . . especially when a dragon gets involved!
Will Mirabelle's family believe that Mirabelle is (mostly) innocent this time or is it just a case of double the trouble?

Wil!

Viimeisin julkaistu Mirabelle jatkaa aika samalla linjalla.

This is a sweet, beautifully illustrated book, brought to you by the makers of Isadora Moon Goes on Holiday and part of the delightful Mirabelle series (an offshoot of the equally delightsome Isadora Moon series). The drawings are whimsical and two-tone; the cover has fantabulous glitter effects. The font is large, in keeping with the target readership which would seem to be little girls, age 3 to 8. Although I must say, little girls are perfectly able to read tiny script. It's middle-aged peeps like me who really appreciate the large type. The illustrations are nicely integrated on the page.

The story follows the antics of Mirabelle who is of half-witch, half-fairy heritage with a stern if secretly mischievous witchy mother, a charmingly non-macho fairy father who drives at the rate of knots, likes to eat petal-blossom yoghurt and is pictured in pastelly hues (in contrast to black-and-purple witch mum), and her older brother Wilbur. Mirabelle meets a girl who is even naughtier than she is while away on holiday. But there are twists!! And dragons!! It all ends sweetly and charmingly, with satisfying ethics on friendship, forgiveness and taking responsibility.

These series warm my heart, and my inner five-year-old. I was a tomboy because the role models for little girls were pathetic in the 60s (with the exception of Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Langstrumpf and Madita). Maybe if I'd had books like Harriet Muncaster's, I could have been prouder of my feminine heritage. :)

The author is a graduate of the Cambridge School of Art's degree in Children's Book Illustration. I teach at that university and am doubly proud. The credits say 'illustrated by Mike Love , based on original artwork by Harriet Muncaster.'

I bought this one and the previous one because when I buy actual analogue books in an actual brick-and-mortar shop I like to get a beautiful object (not just some content wrapped in cardboard, with tiny font and a stiff spine).

I ordered this through Amazon Vine, so I have to admit to not having read the previous books in the series. The reason that I thought that I would give it a go was that, when I was younger, I really enjoyed the Worst Witch books, so wanted to try and recapture some of my youth!
Overall, this was an enjoyable book for younger readers. Without young children of my own, I would guess that this would appeal to readers around 7 or 8. Mirabelle, the titular character, is half fairy and half witch. This book sees her going on an all-inclusive witch holiday with her family, and she has been made to promise that there won't be any mischief along the way. But when she makes friends with another girl called Beatrix, trouble isn't too far away.
The illustrations for this book were very charming, bringing lots to look at for the younger audience. Being way older than its target market now, it is hard for me to gauge how much I would have enjoyed it when I was that age. I think there was enough humour and excitement to keep me reading, but I do still hold a torch for the Worst Witch when it comes to those in pointy hats.

I’ve loved revisiting Harriet Muncaster’s wonderful imagination while picking out books for Violet’s school library. Not only does she write about children in a way that’s accessible and familiar, her world-building (and the accompanying delightfully-detailed illustrations) are simply fantastic. I throughly enjoyed the witch summer resort in this one!

Another short children's read at just over 100 pages. A brilliant series perfect for all little girls. I have reviewed others from this series previously. They all read fine as Standalones. Meet Mirabelle, half witch, half fairy. She is usually a very mischievous/naughty little girl. In this story she's off on holiday with her family and vows to leave her potions at home be a good girl. She meets up with another little girl on holiday called Beatrix and they soon become friends. However, magic and tricks are soon involved in the holiday and ofcourse Mirabelle gets blamed. But has mirabelle found her match in Beatrix? Whose causing all this chaos and can this family have a normal holiday for once? A well deserved four stars from me. Beautifully illustrated throughout. Highly recommend.

I have never before read this series, I just grabbed this from a library and I really liked its illustrations so I picked it not knowing it's a part of a series.

Mirabelle is half a witch and half a fairy and she likes to do tricks, she's such a naughty girl but she never does anything bad on purpose. She and her family are going to a holiday in a witch resort and... well the title says it all, there comes double trouble.

I absolutely loved its illustration but also the depiction of how kids behave. A very funny and sympathetic story about a little child who likes to do some tricks but never means anything bad. They're just kids and they do that.

A very different version of Mirabelle. Oh don't get me wrong, there are tricks galore, magic abound and chaos afoot but it is nice to see her fairy side get a little use this book. Witchy magical holidays seem amazing and I wish I could go on one. I liked that Mirabelle was trying to make a friend and be good. It was some amazing growth from her earlier escapades. Am very much looking forward to seeing more of these.

The 4th in Harriet Muncaster’s MIRABELLE SERIES (a companion to her ISADORA MOON SERIES) for readers aged 5+ is an entertaining read packed with mischief as Mirabelle is forced to deal with the consequences of being thought of as a trouble maker. Mike Love’s illustrations (based on Muncaster’s original artwork) neatly complement the text and I enjoyed Mirabelle’s relationship with her older brother. I would definitely read on.
