Mio, stuck with her father’s debt, finds herself at a dead-end when she runs into her first love, Yamato Kujo. She’s surprised when she learns that he’s become a lieutenant for the Yakuza, and he’s willing to take on her debt in exchange for her hand in marriage! After learning about Yamato’s past, the two of them grow closer as the dreaded day of the Family Meeting arrives. Yamato’s completely unexpected statements send violent tremors throughout the Hazakura-gumi, but how will Mio feel when she meets Yamato’s father for the very first time...?
I’m so confused on this plot. Maybe because there are so many characters that are getting their own screen time, but it was a little hard to follow. This is good though. It makes it more interesting, but I was like ok what subtle context did I just miss? Art is still super gorgeous and I love our main couple Mio and Yamato. I think it’s so cute that they’re both jealous of each other’s exes. That they didn’t get a chance to develop anything romantic as kids or young adults, but are definitely making up for lost time. But Mio’s ex boyfriend is kinda a jerk for making her question Yamato’s main motive for marrying her. Was it for true love or for the yakuza? I like how Mio is going to believe in her husband’s intentions and feelings regardless. But man, Yamato is definitely hiding something and he’s having a hard time not letting it get out to Mio.
The cheating ex-boyfriend needs to go back to the depths of oblivion. If there’s drama, it should only involve our couple and not the cheating dude.
As hard as it was to read Yamato’s response to that woman, I agree with what he did. You never know if it ain’t a trap because showing kindness to her, would be seen as a weakness by the higher ups. Well played by the ML, reaction gave me chills.
Let’s not forget that this is a yakuza story. And I don’t think the ML ever claimed to be ”good” either. For the most part, his morals are in the right place. I love how the ML is not all perfect. Everyone here have their own flaws that will make you really think that makes sense. However, even he knows that messing with another guys’ lady is going to bring more trouble than it’s worth.
This also doesn’t mean I condone Shirosaki’s shitty actions. He can go rot in hell for all I care. He is so evil for no good reason and a psychopath. Like he enjoys just being violent and mean. He is married to the heads daughter and cheating so openly at it too.
In this volume, we see further that the only person that Yamato cares for is Mio. Despite his declaration that he wants to disband the yakuza and protect the weak and crush the strong, he is too engrossed in this life to truly change. We further see two sides of him, a face of when he is around Mio, and another face around everyone else, showing his true colours.
We learn more about the people that are around Yamato, who all have something very dark, and Mio's reporter ex-boyfriend appears, who is trying to unearth the truth about the yakuza, and has no qualms using Mion to get to her husband, but despite this, still has feelings for her and is determined to protect her from the darkness that lurks close by
I find it cute seeing both Mio and Kujo become jealous over each other’s exes. It was also really interesting seeing a bit more of the side characters and even minor characters do on their time. I’m very curious about Shiki and his connection to the underground Idol girl. Also, I really don’t like Mio’s reporter ex boyfriend. I don’t know if it’s the way that he talks to Mio or, the fact that he just gave me a bad vibe since he first appeared, but I really don’t want Mio spending anymore time alone with him. I want her with a yakuza underling, Shiki, or even Kujo to be with her when she has to meet the reporter.
Mmmk better, much better. I like that we're focusing on him being a yakuza and doing bad things because come on he's not out there being a nice guy and never getting his hands dirty...he needs to scare away the ex boyfriend so we never hear from him again but I'm sure this isn't the last time we see that loser.
I enjoyed this volume and am enjoying the series...but I didn't really feel like a lot happened here. A few bits that hint at stuff to come and hopefully there is payoff in future volumes...but there wasn't any in THIS volume for me. Still love the characters and art.
Again, we don’t like homewreckers here. Or anyone getting in the way of the couple lol. Also this end has been the best end yet, I am really excited for volume 4.
The fact I read volume 1 to 7 in one day says enough about the pacing. The story is interesting and the characters feel really grounded and you are rooting for (most of) them.
Still despite my somewhat love for yakuza type stories (more yankees) I think I will forget everything about this story in about 6 months. It's not bad at all yet... there is something missing. Maybe because every thing is a bit too subtle? The humour, the story, even the love between the main characters? Which seems outrageous to say because their love is very strong. It is also based on both characters knowing in what kind of world they are living in.
But still, maybe I need some drama in these kinds of yakuza type stories. Which is a bit of a shame.
