For the first time in print, Rick Lai's "Chronology of Shadows" (his timeline of the pulp character The Shadow) has been updated & assembled in an easy-to-navigate package.
My geek for all things Shadow is showing, but kudos to Rick Lai for compiling this obsessive timeline of the zillion Shadow novels from the 30s and 40s. A fascinating essay at the rear of the book links the Shadow's lineage to the Paris Opera House during Erik's tenure. I met Rick at the recent Necronomicon and he thanked me for including Madame de Medici in the "Infernal Night" story I did with Heather Graham. He's the only one to recognize her as an obscure Sax Rohmer character. So an extra tip of the hat for that.
This is an extremely fascinating book where the author uses most of the Shadow novels in developing a chronology of the order of events that the Shadow was involved in, including who the Shadow's parents were and what happened to them, what the Shadow did before he became the Shadow, and the various cases that he was involved in.
This does not include summaries of the stories, though. It just places the various stories in an order in which it seems that they might have occurred, including various gaps and what the Shadow might have been doing during those times. I found it quite interesting reading.
Fantastic book delving into the past of the pulp character The Shadow. Rick Lai does a wonderful job analyzing the clues given about the Shadow's past and coming up with a probable history of this great pulp character. Well researched and written this book is a must read for any pulp fan of The Shadow. Very recommended
