This is another children's book from my childhood that was intended to inspire interest in historical Black figures. Most of what I wrote in my review of Book of Black Heroes: Great Women in the Struggle applies here (of course with the fact that men ans well as women are featured here. The one curious thing about this book that distinguishes it from other books on African-American history/culture that I read as a child is that it is still in print. In fact the latest edition was published in 2013 so you can actually find this around get a taste of what I read growing up!

My edition is paperback.

I have read and loved this book. What I especially liked about it is that Hudson and Wesley have chosen from a wide range, including many that are not usually widely written about. It is a great book to have in a classroom library.
