How to Win a Duke's Heart

Rate this book
Some fairy tales begin with love at first sight. This is not one of those tales…

Sophronie Slater had no interest in getting married. Even if she did, the Duke of Waycross would not be her choice. She would, however, do anything for her father. So, in honor of his dying wish to see her legally bound to the contrary, annoyingly handsome Scot who drives her mad, she agrees to a very temporary marriage. She’ll never love him, though. At least, that was the plan…

Evan Gordonstone has no interest in romance. Caring for his relatives and restoring his duchy to profitability is about all he can manage. But if he has any hope of one day realizing his dream of breeding and racing horses, he needs Sophronie. Their arranged marriage will fix all his problems. Assuming he doesn’t fall for his lovely new wife and ruin everything…

Sophronie and Evan are about to find out that opposites can attract in the most unexpected—and sensual—ways. But when all is said and done, can they win each other’s hearts and turn their fake marriage into a real happily ever after?

She glanced up, meeting his eyes, and her breath hitched at the smoldering emotion she saw in those blue-gray depths. It made her hot all over and heavy in her belly. Her feet moved toward him of their own volition, and she hugged him tightly.
“Thank you, Evan. Thank you.”
He encircled her with his strong arms, and she never wanted him to stop holding her. It felt so right. So natural.

Coming 1/17/22

Evan felt Sophronie’s presence before he saw her. It was as if his soul was in tune with hers and
sensed when she was near. His spirit cried out for hers, and in her presence, he was at peace. If only she felt the same, but given she’d asked again for an annulment last week, his confidence to woo her was waning.

Coming 1/17/22

Lips parted, Sophronie stared at him, her eyes alarmingly blue in her ashen face. She slowly rose, her movements as precise and stiff as a woman five decades older.

“You do realize, Evan, that you’ve just confirmed that you find me inferior in every way to a scheming, devious murderess.”

Hell’s bells.

https://books2read.com/HTWADHcc

Coming 1/17/22

She spread her hands apart, heartache and betrayal awash in her azure eyes. “Don’t you understand, Evan? No matter how long we are married, I shall always believe I was merely the means to an end. As a person, I had no value except what I brought to the union—my father’s fortune.”

Lifting her chin, he searched her eyes then captured her mouth in a searing kiss. He’d longed to kiss her again ever since that day when they’d been riding. She relaxed in his arms and twined her arms about his neck.

Coming 1/17/22

Evan turned her into his arms, and then she was against the solid wall of his chest as she’d yearned to be, absorbing his strength and the woodsy, musky scent of his cologne. He was her rock at this moment, and she clung to him.

Coming 1/17/22

People always said how strong she was. They were wrong. It was a veneer, a charade, a wall to protect herself. She wasn’t strong. She had fears and worries just like everyone else. She simply hid hers behind a bright smile, daring behavior, and a resilient spirit.

Head lifted, he peered into her eyes, so deeply and so intensely, he vowed his soul seared hers.
“Which is it, lass? This aggravatin’ thing, this perplexin’ spark between us? Love or war?”

Gasping, Sophronie reared back as if struck. Eyes tumultuous, she pressed the back of her hand against her mouth before squaring her shoulders.

“Need you ask, Your Grace? It’s always been war between us.”

One knee bent, he leaned against the shelves and crossed his arms. The posture emphasized his biceps and pulled the vee of his shirt wider, revealing a thatch of black, curly hair. Sheer brute strength warred with inbred, noble elegance. An arrogant smile teased one corner of his mouth, drawing her attention to the ebony stubble shadowing the lower part of his face.

No matter how determined she was to not react to the duke’s deliberate goading, as predictably as a match touched to tinder burst into flames, she lost her temper. What was more, she couldn’t deny a surge of triumph when irritation sparked in his stormy eyes. There was something most satisfying about getting beneath the severe duke’s sun-browned skin.

Eyebrows drawn together, Evan searched her flushed features and sparkling eyes. Why hadn’t he ever noticed her beauty before? Probably because every time she opened her mouth, they clashed. Nonetheless, at this moment, suspended in time with the sun’s newborn rays feathering her face in soft light and with the Highland meadow as a backdrop, Sophronie Slater was a heart-stopping vision.

"Ye canna run forever, my obstinate lass. I mean to chase ye until ye run into my arms." ~Evan Gordonstone, Duke of Waycross

Evan is positively swoon-worthy. He's tall, handsome, honorable beyond reproach, and has some money issues. He's working on being a top horse breeder and trainer in Scotland in an effort to keep his family afloat after his father and eldest brother passed away, leaving him a duke. He's inherited the dukedom and all that goes with it, including the debts. Between his sisters, mother, and aunts, he has ten women to look after, but he never complains and is doing the best he can do with what he's got. He wasn't counting on running into the hoyden American woman, Sophronie Slater at a horse race nor was he counting on her and her father becoming house guests.

Sophronie and Evan had met before and they couldn't seem to keep their irritation for each other under control. They didn't like each other at all. She thought he was arrogant and insensitive. He thought she was unladylike and belligerent. She was an American and didn't care what the ton or anyone else thought of her, but she did want to make her father proud and was determined to not embarrass him at this function and that included being nice to the Duke of Waycross.

I don't want to put any spoilers in this because it's a marvelous story, but Evan and Sophronie end up marrying against both their wishes. The circumstances mitigated it. After that, she wanted an annulment. He wanted to make a go of it. To see and feel these two falling in love with their only common ground being experts on horses and the love of them was so satisfying. He saw some errors in his ways as she saw some in hers and it was hard for them to put their past behind them and create a future.

This was a beautiful hate-to-love story with great characters, some moments that had me choked up, some humor, and a great ending. By the way, I really loved Evan's brogue. It made him so real.

This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone novel.

Very enjoyable read. Evan Gordonstone, the Duke of Waycross is not interested in anything but his horses, keeping his family happy, and keeping his properties afloat. Sophronie Slater, a headstrong American heiress, also loves horses, and dislikes Evan. Forced together, they start to see each other in a different light, but circumstances are working against them. Loved these characters and their families, and became so invested in their story I couldn't put it down.

Scotland 1810

With her signature style, infinite humor and unforgettable characters, Collette Cameron has crafted an a story that continues to make her one of my favorite authors.

A Scot to be reckoned with along with a feisty, petite American spitfire can only mean a match made in heaven. Or does it?

I fell in love with Evan and Sophronie and all of his extended family! Humor, sadness, a vicious scorned woman and Mr. Peppermint made the journey to a wonderful epilogue so worth the journey.

There are so many great quotes in this book, my kindle has yellow highlights all over it! I truly cannot wait for the next in this series and hope to see Evan's sisters!

Sophronie Slater came to England with her father to acquire breeding horses for their farm in Virginia. Invited by Evan Gordonstone, the Duke of Waycross, to Scotland, Sophronie was unaware of his invitation, until she and her father arrived at the Belleisle Racecourse. Always at odds with the Duke, it was constant bickering between them over horses. When tragedy strikes, Sophronie doesn't have anyone to turn to. Evan steps in. Only the situation doesn't get better. Sophronie and Evan find themselves bound together for a year.
This a fast paced romance between an independent, tenacious young lady from America and a pig headed Duke. A Scotsman who thought "women have nae place raisin' horseflesh or imposin' themselves upon male pursuits," until Sophronie changed his mind. A favorite trope of enemies to lovers with a little help from his three sisters, four aunts, two grandmothers and mother.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the book gifted by the author.

Sophronie Slater had no interest in getting married she'd rather be breeding horses on her father's ranch in Virginia. Even if she did, the Duke of Waycross would not be her choice. She would, however, do anything for her father. So when her father is trampled by a horse whilst they are visiting Scotland & in honour of his dying wish to see her legally bound to the contrary, annoyingly handsome Scot who drives her mad, she agrees to a very temporary marriage. Evan Gordonstone has no interest in romance. Caring for his relatives and restoring his duchy to profitability is about all he can manage. Their arranged marriage will fix all his problems.
This is the fourteenth book in the series &is easily read on its own. I loved this enemies to lovers story. I loved both Evan & Roni who are horse mad & annoy each other at every meeting but their chemistry is electric & they deny their attraction. Roni is feisty, loyal & kind, Evan has a heart of gold & even though the duchy is in financial difficulties he has his fourteen female relatives living with him. This is an emotional roller coaster of a read & needs a double hankie warning. I loved the verbal banter between the pair & loved the side lines by Evan’s relatives. There’s a vile villain & I loved how Roni was allowed to handle her. I hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the Gordonstone’s, after all there are three unmarried sisters (hint, hint!!) Another highly recommended, engrossing read which I devoured in a sitting, I just loved it
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I loved the honest nature of Sophronie and her love of family and horses. With the amount of loss in her life, she could have been a lot more closed off. Evan also had a great love of horses and was very loyal to his people, trying to rectify the damage done by his father and brother. I really enjoyed this couple as they grew to love each other despite the negative thoughts outside their families. This was difficult to put down for me, so I highly recommend this read.

I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.

FANTASTIC!!! How to Win a Duke's Heart by Collette Cameron is book 14 in the Seductive Scoundrels series and what a way to end a series. Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. The banter in the beginning of this book is Collette Cameron at her best and I there is nothing I love better than good banter in a book, it totally cracked me up. Nothing like a good laugh in a book. Also the snide comments were just great. I could not put this book down. Collette is such an amazing writer and she never disappoints. The story was original, had the true feeling of the regency era and Roni & Evan just sizzled. What a great read. This story has horses, a father wanting his daughter to marry, a brooding Scot Lord, support of a good family, injury, jealousy, a surprised birthday gift, death, a incredible horsewomen, evil and falling in love. It has it all and I am highly recommending you read this book. You will not be disappointed.

***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

I was hooked on this book in the first few pages & I thought the flow & pace of the story were perfect. I loved the setting in Scotland, the description of the castle, the green pastures -- I am always happy to leave London society & travel to Scotland, so it kept me turning pages & I was never bored with too many words or too many detailed descriptions.

Evan & Roni - they were so likable; he was a Scot that was honorable, handsome & Roni was my kind of hoydenish heroine plus they shared a love for horses & they both wanted a successful breeding, training stable. All the secondary characters were wonderful (Roni's father & all Evan sisters, aunts, mothers & grandmother - plus Sir Peppermint, Cinnamon & Eclipse) except the selfish & mean Leah.

Evan & Roni had an obstacle-filled journey to their HEA, but their families brought so much love, faith & support to our couple & even the animals brought love, laughter & loyalty to their story. I think you might have to be a horse lover/owner but the scene with Roni being surprised by Evan reuniting her with her horse, Cinnamon & the hug had me sobbing.

I enjoyed what motivated Evan - family & horses & Roni just wanted to be herself be with the horses, she didn't care for society. I loved the epilogue & I felt all loose ends were tied up, and it also left me hoping Larissa might get a story. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

Sophomore Slater is horse mad, she rides as good as any man, tames the wild beasts, and can pick broodstock. Traveling across England and Scotland with her father, she has had her share of looks and comments.

Mostly from the vexing, handsome Duke of Waycross, Evan Gordonstone. He has a house full of females, 10 to be exact, so he should be able to handle one spitfire, rebellious female. They disagree on everything except horses.

So how is it the are so at odds and not boosome buddies!!! They want the same prize, that's why. When Evan asks George Slater to appraise which would be the better investment, he knows the answer will be an honest, honorable, and best response given.

When an accident happens lives get turned upside down and a viper of unimaginative credulity places selfish wants where it should be kindness.
If you what strong, decisive characters; bantering; and domineering presence then this story is for you.

Join in the lovely romps through the Scottish countryside while you enjoy the horse races, family dynamics that will have you laughing at the hijinxs.

2.5 stars. This had a decent amount of character and plot development despite the short format. However, while I understood the attitude of the heroine, I didn't like her that much. The hero, on the other hand, was very likable. He came across as a decent man, one who not only liked but respected women. Overall a decent novella.

Collette Cameron’s “How to Win a Duke's Heart: A Regency Romance” is Book 14 in the delightfully charming Seductive Scoundrels Series.

An all-time favorite author of mine, Collette Cameron never fails to deliver richly developed characters you’re sure to fall in love with and Sophronie and Evan are no different. Two people from two different worlds who can hardly agree on anything but their love for horses and that’s debatable.

Sophronie Slater, a petite and feisty young woman from America who could give two hoots about the ton and their rules and the most irascible Scotsman she ever met, Evan Gordonstone,The Duke of Waycross who felt women had no place in the raising of horses. That’s not to say the swoon worthy Evan didn’t understand women. He has been solely responsible for his sisters, his aunts, grandmothers and mother and taken care of them well, he has, but this woman is exacerbating yet beautiful and intelligent.

Oh the sparks are there and between these two the chemistry sizzles. Not only does this extremely talented author weave the most delightful, refreshing stories but her dialogue is always exceptional. Her wit and wonderful sense of humor makes for the most entertaining banter. There are so many examples in this story. Her stories also include interesting, charming family members and Evan’s family are adorable. I look forward to reading the stories of his sisters.

This is an excellent enemies to lovers tale that at times had me teary eyed and at others just smiling. It’s a beautiful tale of learning to understand one another, even forgive and put the past behind you, a love story just waiting to be told. I always feel so satisfied after reading Ms. Cameron’s books and this is a story beautifully written and wonderfully told.

Thank you so much Ms. Cameron for this beautiful love story!

This delightful storyline satisfies several favorite genre desires. It’s an enemies to lovers , marriage of convenience, feisty heroine, and a happily ever after. It had twists and turns that I never saw coming. Evan, the Duke of Waycross, and Sophronie Slater, had much in common with their love of raising and racing horses, but that’s about as far as it went. The outspoken, unconventional American, couldn’t stand the Scottish Duke, and he was just as irritated by her. But there’s a fine line between love and hate, or as her father said, “love and hate are on two sides of the coin”. When circumstances bring them together in a marriage of necessity, Sophronie determines she will not stay in this forced relationship. The Duke determines to win her heart! I thoroughly enjoyed this story start to finish!

Oil and water

She's the water. American , horse lover, and according to society a hoyden. She and her father raise horses in Virginia and are looking for new stock. He's a Duke also raising horses and he disapproves of her and makes it known. These two are made for each other but getting them together makes a great story

From the first this book exudes Emotional tension. The Duke of Waycross (Evan) is interested in breeding horses to help get his Scottish estate out of debt. Sophronie (Roni) Slater is an American in England to help her father with purchasing horses. The Slater's go to Scotland at the invitation of the Duke to watch a horse race and help the Duke select some breeding stock. While Roni may be an expert at horseflesh she doesn't get along as easily with the human variety - she is too outspoken, too smart, too knowledgeable and talented with horses to get along with the stuffy members of the ton.
From the first Roni and Evan rub each other the wrong way and yet there is a spark between them that cannot be denied. Watching them dance around the attraction is enjoyable and when they finally find their Happily Ever After it is worth the wait.

I was able to read an advance copy of How to Win A Duke’s Heart. Like the other books in the series, this is a fun, quick read that left me smiling. Emotions burn hot when Sophronie & Evan are together. They may start out as adversaries, but things change as events unfold. There’s even a dastardly villain disguised as a spoiled society miss in this enemies-to-lovers tale. Once I started it, I couldn’t put down this story about two horse-crazy people that eventually figure out they’re also crazy about each other.

This book is a delightful addition to the author’s Seductive Scoundrel series. It is a very charming enemies-to-lovers tale that has been woven by Ms. Cameron. Sophronie Slater is an impetuous American who is the polar opposite of a refined English lady. The only thing she has in common with Evan Gordonstone, the Duke of Waycross, is a mutual love of horseflesh. I loved how the author set the tone for this work with her descriptive prose about surroundings, events taking place, the characters, both main and supportive, as well as the horses. The bickering and bantering between Sophronie and Evan eventually turn into love, though it is a somewhat rocky road they travel. They face tragedy as well as dealing with the actions of a nasty character. This was a very engaging read and kept my interest throughout. The writing flowed well and was clean of editing errors. I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this work and offer this honest and voluntary review, rating it 4 ½ with a mild-moderate steam level of 3.

Delightfully and Intriguing Romance

I was lucky to read the very beginning of this story before it’s release. I live in Virginia, so I was hooked by knowing the heroine involved in this book was a Virginian. The at once hated and romantic interest is a Scot. I pre-ordered the book and I read it immediately. I was not disappointed! I could not put it down. The skillful author had me feeling for our dear Virginian and her Scot, with all their confrontations and feelings. I heartily recommend this book!

How to Win a Duke’s Heart was a brilliant read. Full of highs and lows, with a mix of humour and sadness, there is plenty to entertain. Evan, the Scottish Duke of Waycross is one of the most honourable protagonists I have come across and Sophronie Slater, a rather spoiled and determined American heiress, would not appear to be likely partners in a HEA romance, but I am very glad that they do get their HEA, because their road towards this is not at all smooth. Their backgrounds re so very different, yet they do share a love of horses and personal attributes, including integrity and an absolute love of their families.
There is humour to be found in this book, but the nastiest antagonist that Collette Cameron has created is responsible for bringing about tears and sadness, so keep a handkerchief handy.
This book is extremely well crafted and absolutely one of Collette’s best yet. Definitely one to read.

How To Win A Duke’s Heart is book fourteen in The Seductive Scoundrels Series. I enjoyed this book. Sophronie Slater is an interesting heroine - independent, high spirited on the outside but at times vulnerable and very relatable on the inside. She already stands out from the crowd because she is an American. I liked the close relationship that she shares with her father and the deep way that they care about each other. Evan Gordonstone The Duke of Waycross comes across grim and serious at first. But I adored the scenes with his gaggle of sisters and aunts. He juggles women in his family well and understands them on a deeper level than most men. Unfortunately, he and Sophronie have gotten off to a very bad start. Can there be love between enemies? Read and find out.

Another enjoyable read by Collette Cameron. This story is about Sopronie, who is American but comes to England/Scotland with her father for their Horse Breeding Business. She meets Evan, who is a Scottish Duke. As soon as the meet they always disagree or compete for Horses. I love how the author writes Evan interacting with his extended family - Sisters, Aunts, Grandmothers and Mother. I also love the closeness Sophronie and her father have. You will enjoy this read and the time will fly by.
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest opinion.

irrigation breeds love

Sophronie believes Evan to be the most irritatingly, boorish man she has ever met. Evan believes the same of her. Both have an intense undeniable love of horses. Are they a perfect match? A murder, a loving family and a scheming neighbor await you.

Persistence leads to an HEA

Sophronie and Evan have lots of friends and family telling them that they belong together, but they are too busy fighting over horses. Both are looking to increase their breeding stock, but Evan truly needs to profit from his horses, as he inherited a bankrupt estate. A tragedy ties them together in marriage, and Sophronie is initially desperate to annul the marriage. Evan refuses, and she learns more about what a kind person he is, begins to appreciate him, and eventually Evan comes up with the most amazing gift he could, totally winning her over. The author has a wonderful way with words, and comes up with unforgettable characters.

A Good Story

I love any book Collette Cameron writes!! She is one of my favorite authors, her books always tell a good story, her characters are easy to identify with. This story is no exception. Roni and Evan were such a great couple and it’s nice to have an author who writes a strong woman’s character who doesn’t cave into male dominance and a male character who is strong and masculine yet accepts his lady for all she is and doesn’t try to change her.
