She wakes up alone in a dark house. She has no memory, no idea who she is or where she came from. Blood runs from a wound on one side of her head. She hears strange sounds coming from one of the rooms upstairs. She still doesn't remember anything, but she's starting to realize the awful truth.
She's trapped inside a haunted house.
Not even knowing her own name, the woman starts searching for clues. The strange sounds continue. Is she truly alone, or are there others in the house? And if there are others, are they friend or foe? After making her first shocking discovery, the woman begins to fear the worst. Time is running out. The doors and windows are sealed shut. Nothing makes sense, but a grandfather clock in the hallway seems to offer clues.
Who is this woman? What was she doing in the house before she lost her memory? And even if she remembers in time, will she be able to stop the evil that lurks in the shadows?
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
The plot was good but, the telling left a lot to be desired. It was a haunted house story with a difference, part "The Exorcist" and part "The Mummy". It started out well but fell flat towards the end. A real pity but, still worth a read.
This wasn’t very long; though it did seem long as I was reading it. It’s supposed to be a series so the semi-confusing and unsatisfying parts may start to make sense later. I hope so. I felt as lost as this lady in here with amnesia. That info is in the book summary as a teaser to lure you in. I’ll continue as I am a fan of her work and; though I have really run into some weird stories going down some unusual avenues throughout the years, most are really good horror.
Holy shit this book was so gooood 🔥 I'm currently on an amy cross binge her work is brilliant! This book was hard to get into at the beginning, but as it went on, it only got better! The story, the plot, the setup, and style were all beautifully done! This book is unlike anything I've read before, and I didn't expect a single thing that went down. I can't wait to read book two next week when it gets released!
This is the second Amy Cross book that I have to DNF (the first one was 3AM). This book is about a woman who wakes up at the bottom of the stairs with a head injury and has no idea what/where/who she is. She starts meeting some unsavory characters and the dialogue is so forced and awkward. Apparently, she is in a house (completely boarded in) trying to exorcise some kind of entity out of a young girl. It literally starts out at 100 mph and does not ever slow, so it feels very tense and stressful but not even in a good way. She makes the stupidest decisions, and it all feels like a fever dream. Maybe it would all make sense in the end, but I am the kind of reader who needs small answers sprinkled in and not just all dumped at the end making me feel like I need to re-read the entire book. I hate that.... Some people remarked that it was a "mix between haunted house and the exorcism" but I would argue that there's nothing haunted house about this...disappointing...
First I want to say I can totally understand why this book wouldn't hit well for some folk. This reads more like a prequel novel than entirely its own story.
Without giving spoilers here I want to say that this book kept me heavily unsettled for the first while, then rather confused for a moment- and ended with some good explanations that are leading me to think the next book has the answers to things. I enjoyed this as a spooky read for September while sitting at the bus stop waiting for my kid. It's not a story that had me in its grips but it was a good story none the less. I think if you want something kinda spooky, bit of mystery, not entirely nailbiting this is a great book for you.
I personally didnt catch any spelling/grammar/prose errors while reading it either which is always a bonus for me!
This was an interesting book. It was a good one for people who enjoy paranormal reads but don't like feeling scared or creeped out at all. It has mild gore but not really even a lot of that. Without giving away spoilers, I liked the twist with Cynthia. It wasn't expected and was a new concept that made the book more interesting than it probably would have been otherwise. It wasn't a favorite but it was a nice and quick, easy, fun read. The ending felt a bit rushed but it made sense to have it that way so it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. It was kind of left at a point where she could continue the story with a second book or leave it be as it is.
The premise of the story is very interesting: A woman wakes up at the bottom of a staircase with no recollection of who she is and why she is there. Eventually, she figures out that she is in a haunted house.
The beginning was great. The middle was good. The ending was meh. I wish more time was used to fill in the gaps.
Also, I complain when people are "in a hurry" and therefore do not answer questions.... They have time to say "there is no time to answer because we need to get out of here and blah, blah, blah", but not time to actually answer...
BUT I'm confused. If Rebecca and Jonathan died in the first book, how are they alive in the second book? I really hope it will be explained! I know Amy Cross is a phenomenal author and all her series flow from one book to the next effortlessly, but this has me baffled. I'll definitely be getting into book 2 in hopes this conundrum is explained!
Amy Cross is a masterful writer. Quiet House keeps you guessing from page one till the final paragraph. There were so many twists and turns that there were a fee nights I read an extra hour before going to bed. Great author, great characters, great read. You won't be disappointed.
I have loved all of Amy Cross’s books and this one is no exception. Matter of fact, this on is one of my favorites. The plot makes a lot of exciting and scary turns and the ending is a big surprise. Amy Cross’s books always makes me feel like I’m right there in the story and her character development is amazing. Highly recommended!
So it was all leading up to the twist at the end, the beginning of Rose's story. I didn't see the outcome till it was in front of me so it was a good plot but it didn't show much of Rose till it was almost too late and the ghost only came in at the end so it was more of a possession than a haunting.
Very interesting story, of a group of people being curious about a haunted house and once they go exploring then things get interesting, the way Amy cross writes draws you into her story and connect with the characters. The Quist house has a lot to tell and to discover,.read the story to and things will start to unfold
Was very confused for about 35% of this book. Since Rebecca can't remember anything at the beginning of the book if made the book confusing and not interesting for me as I didn't know what was going on. Big fan of what happens to all in the house though. As for the ending with rose again not a big fan. Will not be continuing this series.
Amy cross write more and continue to scares us you area remarkable author just keep them coming tell you what you keep writing and IL keep reading sincerely christinedunne Harlingen Texas thank you
I liked the book, but I didn't like the fact that Ixaal wasn't really explained. He was a priest, yes, but who was the goddess? I just thought it could be expanded a little.
Awesome, very scary, Amy Cross leads her heroines to a level of weakness and then regains strength and faith that helps mankind see that faith is the key to believing in human kind!! Great read!!
This started out strong and spooky, but I feel like it kind of fizzled out toward the end. What started as a mysterious exorcism ended up reminding me of The Mummy.
