I expected this book to be a moderately interesting but perhaps a little dry exposition of Jewish customs and perspectives. I certainly wasn't prepared for it to be so winsomely and powerfully written, full of insights & "aha" moments that have truly changed my perspective on being a follower of Christ.

Chapter by chapter, the authors go through what a first century rabbi was like and how Jesus fit into the religious culture of Israel, the importance of friendship, Jewish prayers & blessings, Jewish feasts & other customs, and the view of the Kingdom of God in that time.

More than just being a review of history & culture, this book focuses on how the information of history and culture should bring us to a fuller understanding of Jesus, a richer love for Jesus, & a closer walk with Jesus. Again and again they paint a rich picture of first century Israel, and then use that picture to bring us to insightful applications such as, "God's goal isn't simply to fill the world with people who believe the right things. It is to fill the world with people who shine with the brilliance of Christ." and "If you want to be part of God's redemptive kingdom on earth, don't ask how little you can do, but ask how much you can do to please your Father in heaven."

Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus truly is a wondrous book that I both thoroughly enjoyed and that God used in my life. It's a treasure. Read it.

I've been wanting to read this book for a while, but I could never find it. Usually, I pull my Christian literature off of used bookstore shelves, but this one had been eluding me for a while. So many people own it and don't want to give it up and now I understand why. If you're a Gentile, like most Christians, you've probably never experienced Jewish customs. Also, if you aren't at least 2,000 years old, you've never experienced the first-century Arabian peninsula. This book explains a lot of what Jesus was saying from that point of view.

At first, I was a bit skeptical. I've read a lot of theories that claim to have found out that "____ is a reference to ____ which Jesus said so that means the end times are here!!" and I was afraid this book would explain that Jesus fulfilled ____ prophecy that relates back to a Jewish custom I have no context for and can't argue against. However, this book is very well researched. The authors include all their notes and references that are pretty rounded out between Jewish and Christian scholars throughout the centuries. I actually learned a lot that I didn't know about Jewish culture, despite it being completely accessible in the Old Testament. The book explains that a lot of times when Jesus says something, he's referencing a Scripture or a Jewish custom explained and practiced in the Torah.

The most impactful parts for me though were Chapters 6 and 7. Jesus gives us an idea as to how we should pray in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 through The Lord's Prayer, but these chapters expand on that idea and explain how Jewish prayers and blessings worked. It adds context to Matthew 5's Sermon on the Mount (fun fact: according to this book, the tradition mount where Jesus would have preached is a natural amphitheater so 5,000 people would have easily been able to hear Him) and helped me reevaluate how I pray and how I recognize God in my day-to-day routine. So instead of "thank you Lord for this food," my prayer has become "blessed is He who provides for His children." I even wrote down a prayer that I'm trying to memorize and included in my morning:

"I'm grateful to you, living and eternal King, for returning my soul to me with compassion. You are faithful beyond measure."

Overall, I'd recommend this book to people trying to deepen their faith. I would read it with a spirit of discernment because it explains a lot of traditions that, if we're not careful, could lead us into pride and legalism. This book is explaining traditional Judaism, not recommending it. However, understanding the Messiah's faith can help us understand His message better.

Christian authors Ann Spangler and scholar Lois Tverberg explore the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. As more Christians seek a richer historical understanding of their faith, and the revolutionary figure who started it, the Jewishness of Jesus cannot be ignored.

The book discusses:

~ How Jesus’ Jewish upbringing shaped his life and ministry
~ The meaning behind Jewish prayers and blessings
~ Key Hebrew words that clarify and deepen Scriptural readings
~ Rabbi Jesus: How Jesus taught his disciples to pray
~ The political tensions and spiritual fervor of the first century

“As we tried to place ourselves in Jesus’ Jewish world, layer after layer of history seemed to peel away until we could almost imagine that, for a while we, too, had joined the disciples and were sitting at Jesus’ feet (p7).”

“As Christians we can never forget that the Bible is essentially a Jewish document,” say Spangler and Tverberg. “Once we begin to read it from a Jewish perspective, our experience will be transformed, as though we have just swapped an old black-and-white TV with its scratchy image for the latest flat screen, high-definition set. Suddenly the Bible takes on new depth and color as we read the familiar stories once again, this time from the perspective of its original audience.”

By examining the Jewish culture and customs that shaped Jesus’ daily life, Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus offers readers fresh insights into his teachings. The book also includes sidebars that explain Hebrew words and traditions, as well as questions and suggestions to help Christians incorporate what they are learning in a way that respects their own spiritual journey.

“It’s not hard to become fascinated with Judaism for its own sake simply because of the antiquity of its traditions and because many of its practices are wise and biblical,” say Spangler and Tverberg.

“We believe that all of us can understand Jesus better by retuning our hearing and thinking. That is exactly what happened
to us the moment we began studying Jesus’ Jewish culture – passages that had previously left us cold or puzzled suddenly came to life. Lights turned on, and the mist began to clear.”

I'll admit, I was really pumped to read this book when I first heard about it. I had pretty high expectations going into it. I read pleasantly unsurprised as skilled writer Ann Spangler and En-Gedi Resource Center founder Lois Tverberg depicted in clear vernacular the profound truth that most Christians ignore: Jesus was Jewish. He never denounced that faith, nor did He live in opposition to it. He was simply the culmination of all the prophesies, hopes, and promises of the Old Testament. He was the full realization of the Jewish faith.

This book provided answers to questions about my faith I had never considered asking before. What are the Biblical feasts all about? What do some of Jesus' most confusing statements mean in light of His Jewish background? Why was it so darn hard for the disciples to stay awake the night Jesus was arrested in the garden? This is a fast-paced, well-researched, easy-to-understand read that will leave you hungry to learn more about the real roots of the Christian faith.

This book is such a help to Christians in understanding the Bible (both Old and New Testaments). It enables the reader to grasp a deeper meaning from the things that Jesus taught, as well as to correct the assumptions many (like me) have made about the culture in which Jesus lived. I highly recommend both this book and Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, the book that follows it (although I read them out of order).

This is an interesting read for anyone interested in understanding the Jewish roots of Christianity. Many Christians forget that Jesus was a Jewish rabbi. When we understand our Jewish roots it brings the teachings of Jesus into a clearer light. Having worked at an Orthodox Jewish school for a year, I was pleased to learn more about how their cultural traditions and rituals are the precursor to the Christian faith. The book is well researched and the endnotes add to the chapters. I highly recommend this book for any one who is a Christian and wishes to deepen their faith.

This was probably the best book I have ever read (at this point I’m my life). I am always so encouraged and challenged by concepts that help me understand and follow Jesus better. I started this book as part of a group I was a part of and I was very skeptical when I got it. But from the first chapter I was hooked. The cultural context, the insights into the time and history, all add to what is spoken in God’s word. Nothing is new just a clearer and deeper and richer picture. I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone. It comes with discussion questions and awesome footnotes (I loved the footnotes)!

Anyways, please borrow this book from me. Please read this book. Please be more excited about Jesus because of this book.

Well, duh. I guess it makes sense for Christians to understand the Jewish faith as Jesus lived it. I just never thought about it before. This book shows how the Jewish faith plays into so many of Jesus' metaphors and so many of his actions that can't make sense if you don't know the context. Really very fascinating.

4.5! My only minor complaint is the organization of the content sometimes felt a bit scattered. Nonetheless, this book is a must-read for Christians; the authors illuminate SO much about Jesus’ ministry, the Torah, and the culture in which it all took place. The book has a more pastoral tone than academic tone (which I prefer anyway), yet it was so rich with its content that I’ll be referring back to it often.

In a relatively short amount of time, Ms. Spangler and Ms. Tverberg take readers into the world of Jesus, where they do a remarkable job of making His culture, day, and age come alive. The authors systematically go through various aspects of the life of Jesus, showing how Jewish Jesus was and how that influenced and colored His words, actions, and ministry. Along the way they point to head-scratcher passages or passing references in the Gospels and help us understand what they mean in the context of first century Israel.

Coming away from this book I felt I had a better understanding of Pharisees (the branch wasn't so bad as is often painted), Torah (we do ourselves a disservice by thinking of it merely as thou-shalt-not law), communion (and the significance of breaking bread together), and following Christ.

There are so many fascinating tidbits in this book that it almost feels like reading a book of secret knowledge. It is not a long book, and definitely worth the read.

I love books that add cultural and historical context to times, places, and books I have read.

I read a book similar to this years ago and it felt like the author was clutching at straws over some things. This one on the other hand, felt real and authentic and well-researched the whole way through.

I have a deeper and better appreciation for some of Jesus' teachings, a better understanding of just how many times He claimed to be God (more than a modern English reader would realize), and am in awe over even more of the foreshadowing of the Jewish feasts (Passover being the obvious one, but Pentecost was the one I learned the most about).

I'm glad this one is now on my shelf because I will definitely be referencing it in the future. Highly recommend.

This book was just as informational from beginning to end as Jewish traditions help explain and open specifics around stories in both the old and new testament.

Not having a Jewish background, I enjoyed learning some of the customs and will carry this through in my trip to Israel and during my Bible time.

Well done, highly recommend this one!

This is probably my favorite non-fiction book I have ever read. It gave great depth & understanding to my faith & gave an even deeper longing to know everything I can about the Jewish culture and it's foundation in Christianity. Seriously, every chapter I exclaimed, "God is SO cool!!!". Every single thing in scripture is not random or just because. Every single verse is significant.

Great book if you're just getting interested in the Hebrew roots of Christianity. It's easy to read and provides lots of good insights. Read this first and then "Our Father Abraham" by Marvin R. Wilson.

I've been reading this as part of my Bible study, learning to understand the context and culture in which Jesus lived, the people around him, the beliefs and expectations, and most importantly, how there is even more depth in Jesus' words and teachings.

It's incredibly readable, very interesting, and offers great insights from the small (why the disciples kept falling asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane) to the larger (why there are so many Jewish blessings, and the importance of the Feasts).

After I kept passing the library copy over to my husband, or reading/summarizing the chapter I'd just read, we bought a copy from the author's website. I know I'll be reading it again, and gleaning more understanding.

I highly recommend this book. I have been reading it as the text of an adult Sunday school class. I have gained a new appreciation of the words and life of Jesus as recorded in the four Gospels and Acts. The story of Jesus is so much richer and deeper now that I know more about the Jewish faith and traditions that he would have known, and that would have been known to the people who heard him speak during his ministry.

A taste of what I learned in this book: I knew that Jesus celebrated the Passover as the Last Supper on the night before he was crucified. I did not know that he was raised from the dead on another Jewish feast, the Feast of the Firstfruits. The text for the Sabbath between Passover and Firstfruits is Ezekiel 37:5 about God raising dry bones back to life. Layers upon layers of meaning!

I really enjoyed reading this in conjunction with reading through the gospels. It opened my eyes to so many nuances in the text that I missed because I don’t have the context of ancient Jewish culture.

I must admit, I really geeked out over this book!! I loved exploring the nuances of Jewish culture and having a much deeper understanding and clearer perspective of Jesus' words and the audience He was talking to. It was extremely insightful and only kindled the fire more in my spirit. It reaffirmed over and over again the Jesus I have come to love over my journey. All the details make my faith richer and fuller. It built more compassion and understanding of 1st Century Jews. What they would have understood and how the crucifixion was schemed perfectly over Passover, so Jews would not realize what was unfolding until it was too late to defend. Context is so, so important and this book brings a lot of beautiful context and insight. If you want to understand more; what it would have looked like as Jesus walked His earthly journey, then this is a great place to start unearthing that. I hope you will take this perspective into your faith journey. It will give you a new depth and fresh eyes. It will grow compassion and grace. It will encourage and challenge. If you let it in, you will not walk away without being changed. It is that good.

Do you sometimes feel like you don't quite understand the parables on the Kingdom of Heaven? Or like you're missing the full meaning of the Sermon on the Mount? Have you ever wondered how the disciples would have understood Jesus' actions during the Last Supper?

I've read the Gospels numerous times and read many books about what life was like in Biblical times. Frankly, I didn't realize until now how much I was missing by not understanding the rabbinic teaching styles of the time (among other things). Despite all my study, most of this information was new.

This book opened up my understanding of the Gospels by allowing me to see the deeper, richer meaning that would have been understood all along by the Jewish audiences of Jesus' day.

The book consists of general cultural notes alternated with using that new knowledge to examine specific Gospel passages. However, this book isn't just an intellectual exercise--it'll have you digging into your Bible with new enthusiasm and will deepen your walk with God.

While Christians who have a solid foundational knowledge of the Gospels will probably get the most out of this book, I'd highly recommend it to any Christian who wants a deeper understanding of Christ and his teachings.

Great Read! Giving your incredible context of the gospels and EVERYTHING That Jesus said. Everything he said has a direct correlation to the Old Testament.
One of my favorite quotes:
"If you want to be part of God's redemptive kingdom on earth, don't ask how little you can do, but ask how much you can do to please your Father in heaven. By changing our aim we are released from the burden of paying attention to infinitesimal rules designed to keep us out of trouble so that we can use our energy to love God more passionately."

Fantastic!! As a modern-day Christian, it had never occurred to me that so much of what Jesus did was so heavily influenced by the Jewish culture in which he was living. And how much we as Christians have to learn from that! Also -- Spangler and Tverberg did a great job writing in a way that is pertinent and readable by lay Christians that isn't drown out by confusing theological terminology.

Often in the Western Hemisphere we mistakenly view Jesus as one of us. But we must remember that He was a part of a different culture, a different people and in order to better grasp the things He said and did, it is vitally important that we understand the context in which He did and said those things.

This is another great book that looks in depth at the Jewishness of Jesus. The more you learn about the context and nuances in which the Bible, particularly the Gospels were written, the more it really comes to life. This is the first of three books in a series, and I will absolutely read the next two.
