This review is of “Christie’s Rapture” by Veronica Sattler.
The book begins in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1770, and it’s not a happy beginning for the Randall brothers, Jesse and his older brother Garrett, the hero of the book. When the brothers return from a hunting trip, they find their parents, Jeremy and Marianne, dead, and their home torched. Garrett makes it a point then, to find his parents killers.
Fast forward 20 years. In Virginia Colony, Garrett has come to buy horses for his horse breeding business from the Trevellyan family, who are in the same business. The first member of the family he meets is the daughter, Christianna Marcy, hereafter known as Christie, the titular character and the heroine of the book. Christie lives with her father, Charles, and one of his sisters, Christie’s aunt, Celia. (Charles’ wife and Christie’s mother, Jennifer, died giving birth to Christie). Sparks fly immediately between Christie and Garrett.
After sneaking onto Garrett’s ship, Christie and Garrett have sex and later get married while in New York, where Garrett is traveling to follow a lead on his parents’ deaths. Problems arise for the couple, however, due to their pride and a series of misunderstandings. These issues are resolved, mostly, and Christie and Garrett reunite for the birth of their son, Adam.
For a long time, they are a happy couple. Their happiness is threatened, however, as they discover the identity of Garrett’s parents’ killer and the person who is helping them now. Once these identities are revealed, a confrontation occurs, leading to the death of one and the serious injury to the other. Christie and Garrett reunite, and have their Happily Ever After.
Upside: For the most part, Christie and Garrett are both strong characters. It becomes clear that the love they have for each other is strong and passionate.
Downside: Despite the book being 526 pages, Ms. Sattler’s writing of Christie and Garrett lacks depth. The first sexual encounter between them can best be described as dubious consent. Later, Garrett hits Christie in a fit of anger.Ms. Sattler uses a lot of 1980's-when this book was published-tropes, such as misunderstanding and a lack of communication-to create drama between Christie and Garrett. Some storylines-such as Garrett being a former soldier-feel like throw-ins and are not truly developed.
Sex: There are a lot of love scenes, with most focused on the feelings of the act, as opposed to body part descriptions.
Violence: In addition to Garrett’s assault on Christie, there are scenes of sexual assault, assault and battery, and killing. Some of the scenes are mildly graphic.
Bottom Line: “Christie’s Rapture” is a good book, but various things keep it from the “great” category.
I really give this story a 2 1/2 stars. It was a bit too dramatic for my taste. What I mean by dramatic is that the situations were exaggerated to the point where it was not realistic. Overall, the story line was a bit different than the usual.
