It’s the annual Brooke Ridge Falls dog show and Lexy is excited to cater the event. She’s not going to let the murder at the Doggy Diva pet salon put a damper on things for her. She’s also not going to get sidetracked by the robbery at Farradays Jewelers down the street. Okay, maybe the dog napping in the retirement village will distract her. And what about the person stealing K-cups from the senior center?
Lexy’s grandmother and her gang of senior-citizen amateur sleuths, on the other hand, are excited to investigate all the above even if it means shifting through a variety of suspects including shady salon owners, jaded jewelrs and suspicious senior citizens.
USA Today bestselling author, Leighann Dobbs, discovered her passion for writing after a twenty year career as a software engineer. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, their trusty Chihuahua mix Mojo and beautiful rescue cat, Kitty.
Her book "Dead Wrong" won the "Best Mystery Romance" award at the 2014 Indie Romance Convention.
Her book "Ghostly Paws" was the 2015 Chanticleer Mystery & Mayhem First Place category winner in the Animal Mystery category.
Things were getting a bit dull in the retirement community, and the group of old ladies that investigate such things are looking for crimes. Someone is stealing coffee from the Senior Center. There's been a robbery at a local jewelry store. Finally, someone is murdered. Things get hopping.
There's a lot of very bad driving, with collisions every few pages. Some of these old folks need to get their licenses taken away before they kill somebody.
Assault and Buttercream is the 16th book in the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series. As always, Nans and crew are up to sleuthing and in this one, they have not one, not two, not three, but four different mysteries to solve. As always, Lexy is watching over the geriatric troupe to make sure they don’t get into too much trouble. With there being four mysteries to solve, are they connected? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
Mystery one is the robbery at Farraday Jeweler’s, who stole the diamonds? Mystery two, who is stealing K-cups from the Sr. Center? Mystery three, who murdered Freddy Lange at Doggie Diva? Mystery four, who has stolen Prudence, the dog that’s one of the favorites to win the dog show that has a $10,000 prize attached? Nans and ladies are on the case, but will they get it solved before anything else happens?
Another fun read from Leighann Dobbs. How can you not enjoy a group of elderly women, who definitely enjoy their baked goods, which Lexy provides from her bakery, and love sleuthing. If you haven’t picked up this series, it doesn’t matter where you start. Each book can be read as a stand alone or in order. My advice, if you want a fast and easy read, pick one of these stories to read. Cozy mysteries are my mental floss and these books always provide a perfect respite between heavy reads.
Thank you #goodreads and #leighanndobbs for the giveaway. All opinions are my own and were not solicited from goodreads, the author or publisher.
Nans and the geriatric investigation team have been bored with no real crimes happing lately. Luckily for them, there's been a robbery at a jewelry store. So they're off to investigate while Lexi takes her dog, Sprinkles, to a grooming place only to find one of the clerks there behind the counter. Very dead. Of course, Nans and her crew can't let a murder in their town happen without investigating. Then because the ladies don't have enough on their plate yet? One of the ladies in the retirement community has her dog stolen.
This is another fun mystery from an author who is really good at putting up red herrings and making you second guess everyone who you think may be guilty until the big reveal.
There are developed characters, a bit of humor, and a strong plot line.
It's been a bit since we have heard from Lexy and this funny cast of characters. It's been fun getting to know them again.
Nans and the investigating besties are bored. There hasn't been much going on lately for them to investigate but suddenly they have FOUR mysteries to solve: 1) a diamond theft at Farraday Jewelers 2) the murder of a clerk at the Doggie Diva pet groomers 3) Prudence, the pooch who's basically a shoo-in to win the dog competition is missing and 4) there are missing K-cups from the pantry at the Senior Center (which Helen is all riled up about). Could these various crimes be connected?
This was a fun quick read. Lexy's getting ready to cater the desserts at the local dog show and trying to keep track of her grandma Nans and her friends while they attempt to solve all four mysteries. It was a nice change of pace from the books I'd been reading. I would certainly love to taste some of Lexy's baked goods. This one does give recipes for different frostings at the end of the book which is nice.
If you haven't read any of the Lexy Baker cozy mysteries, it's a fun series and you don't have to read them all to enjoy them. They're all basically standalones.
This is an established series (this is book 16 in the series) but it can be read without reading the others. Nans and the geriatric sleuths have been quite bored lately...then comes their chance for some excitement. They investigate a burglary, a theft and a murder. Their antics along the way are always funny and interesting. This series has always been a favorite of mine. I highly recommend it!
This series is so much fun and entertaining. I have loved this fun and sweet ride I was on with Lexy, her nan and nan's investigating friends. I hope that more books in this series will come out and I will certainly read them all.
Love this series! It’s so fun to read about Lexi, her grandmother and her grandmother’s friends while they investigate crimes. The stuff they get into and their conversations are hilarious! I’d start with the first one, “Killer Cupcakes”, so you can get to know Lexi and the ladies! But beware, you are going to be craving pastries! Yum!
This series is one of my favorites, so I was very excited to be able to read this new instalment. And it was everything I had hoped for. A lighthearted tone, wonderful characters, a clever mystery, well, actually, several mysteries; a fun read! A great book to escape reality with! One thing though: I think I gained five pounds just by reading this LOL! No, seriously, this was an awesome book that I highly recommend.
This is the 16th in the series. Usually, the investigating crew is sharp but I felt like they were phoning it in by just accusing suspects without having sussed out some facts to back their theories up.
So, there were three mysteries: who kidnapped Prudence; who is stealing K-cups; and who killed the dog store worker, Freddy & why? The ladies, especially Ida were more concerned with their sugary snacks then getting real facts. They just didn't have the drive to resolve all three mysteries but did manage to do it.
I found the dog show entrants and the stress caused by the show to be enlightening. The method of Jack determining who had the stolen diamonds and why they stole them interesting.
I did like who called in the thief and murder. That was an awesome twist.
Still looking forward to future episodes but this was not my favorite.
I want to thank the author for explaining the different types of buttercream and having recipes at the back of the book for each. Who knew – I did not. I was given an advanced copy and am not required to leave a positive review.
Assault and Buttercream is Book 16 in the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series by Leighann Dobbs.
OH . MY . GOSH. Some books are just worth waiting for. It's been a while since we had a new story in this series, and it was SO WORTH THE WAIT!!!!
I love Lexy's character and her passion for her bakery and her lovely relationship with her detective husband. If I am being honest, the Ladies Detective Club featuring Nans, Ida and Ruth are such scene stealers. I absolutely love these old sleuth women!!!!
There is a robbery, a dognapping, a murder and a case of some missing K Cups from the senior center.
The characters are well written and funny!
The plot was so perfectly paced with MULTIPLE mysteries that the author seamlessly wrote in the most perfect way.
I highly recommend this series; start from the beginning you won't be sorry!
I look forward to the series! I like the seniors getting involved to solve the crimes and it is just a fun story to read. Probably not written for my age group but I enjoy it. Looking forward to the next adventure. Thank you Leighann Dobbs for another great story.
Enjoyed the fact that this book was based more around the dogs this time & that the Senior Detective Club had 3 different incidents to investigate (which of course were all tied together)! I love Lexy, her grandma Nan & all the other ladies in the books (and of course Jack)!!
Overall a good book with a solid storyline. I am assuming with the way it was left off that the author is considering allowing this to be the last book in the series. I am kind of sad because I truly enjoyed this series. However, I do feel as though the character development began to slide in the last few books, so maybe it is time to end.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I haven't read any of the other books in the series, but it was easy to follow along without reading them. It was a very quick read. I liked the characters and the storylines. It reminded me a lot of a Hallmark Mystery movie.
I like the way Leighann writes. Especially the relationship between Lexi and her gram. The other ladies in the group keeps you smiling too. Solving the cases keeps you guessing too.
Who killed Freddy Lang and why??? I have family members who do dog shows. Never heard of this going on at any of their shows though!!! I enjoyed the story and recommend the book. PS I also enjoy K Cups!!!
I absolutely enjoyed this book. A very cute mystery! The characters are so interesting. It kept me reading to the point I read it in one day. Love everything written by Leigh an Dobbs.
Love the old ladies and their crime solving abilities. The dogs were also fun to get to know. The who done it didn’t become apparent till close to the end. Good insight into harmful herbs.
I love leighann Dobbs books. She knows how to keep a person reading till the end.She had what I like best in a cozy mystery. A murder to solve and pets to love
With dogs, cupcakes, and murder - what could go wrong. I enjoyed this cozy mystery. The ladies are getting better and better at turning up clues and solving cases.
