If We Meet Again #1

If We Meet Again: (Book 1)

Rate this book
Twenty-five-year-old Ashley is an aspiring writer living in New York City. A recent lack of inspiration leads to doubt in her ability. She can’t envision a career outside of the bar she works in or any possible way to become unstuck from the cycle that consumes her.

But then, an overdue evening out with her two best friends leads to a surreal experience.

When she meets Megan, the energy in the room is enough to captivate Ashley—the infectious smiles that pass between them are electrifying. Smiles that, for a brief moment, make even Ashley—a true cynic—believe in fate.

The beautiful, sweet and mesmerising Megan is a Stanford graduate with one goal—to play basketball in the WNBA. She shares with Ashley a story about unfaltering love that’s compelled by the force of fate—a story about her grandmother, Nancy. It ultimately becomes the catalyst for their future relationship and the inspiration Ashley’s been looking for.

To Ashley, the word destiny has never been anything more than a crossword clue found in the NY Times, but she can’t deny the transcendent depth of their connection as an unseen force keeps pulling them back together. The question is—will it be enough?

If We Meet Again is heartfelt, romantic and utterly relatable. It’s a celebration of friendship and love, but more than that, it makes you recognise that you don’t find love, it finds you.

📍 From Lancashire, currently sipping matcha in South Yorkshire.
📚 Writer of sapphic romance, dreamer of big dreams.

Hi, I’m Nicole — a 32-year-old writer, quote collector, basketball fanatic, and proud wife of 7 years. Originally from Lancashire, I now live in South Yorkshire with my incredible wife and our three chaos-loving dogs.

For the last decade, I’ve been crafting quotes, short stories, and LGBT novels — mostly for fun, always from the heart. When I’m not glued to my laptop with a cup of matcha in hand, you’ll probably find me hopping on a plane, watching / playing basketball, or dreaming up my next big story idea from the comfort of my sofa . . . or coffee shop.

Sapphic romance is more than a genre for me — it’s a mission. Growing up, I didn’t see myself in the pages I read. The world was full of heterosexual love stories (some of which I adored), but none quite hit home. So now, I write the stories I wish I’d had: honest, modern, relatable tales where queer women can finally see themselves as the main character.

My goal? To create an escape, a spark, or even just a little moment of connection for anyone who picks up one of my books — especially for the LGBT+ community who deserve to feel seen, celebrated, and swooningly in love.

A few fun facts:

🗽 If I could live anywhere, it’d be New York City — because why not dream big?
📖 Favourite book: The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks (yes, I own a first edition, and yes, I cried)
🏀 Ride-or-die Lakers fan
✍️ Favourite quote? Easy: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” (Thanks, Wayne Gretzky — and Michael Scott, kind of.)

Let’s connect — you can find me on Instagram @nss_writings. Come for the sapphic feels, stay for the travel pics and dog content.

'Don't aspire to be that writer you've always envision, just have the passion to tell a story and finally, your beginning sentence should set the tone of your story..'

3.5 stars!
A somewhat charming love story with minimal interval of whatever chemistry the author is trying to develop between them (Ashley & Megan) --- anytime they're around each other. The push/pull, are they/will they storytelling was a bit tedious but it's still both enjoyable and readable.

This was such an unexpected read. The beginnings of the book felt like the usual instalove stories out there and then the angst kept building and building and building and oh my lawd I was inundated and just dumbfounded by the trajectory of the story. I didn’t even realise there was no spice because I was so caught up with the warring anxiety and hope. Just to end in a cliffhanger (I didn’t realise it was a series). I didn’t really believe in fate and all that but when a writer makes you believe something, even just for the time being you’re reading their work, their job is done!

Thank you to the author who provided an e-copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

If We Meet Again is a romance about Ashley and Megan. After a chance meeting in New York, the two feel an instant attraction. They go on an incredible date together and find it so easy to talk to each other. Then Megan finds out she's going back to England to play basketball. The two agree to be friends. But fate or something like it seems to keep pulling them back into each other's orbits.

I read this whole book in one sitting! It was so easy to read and I really enjoyed both Megan and Ashley's POVs. I think I need to read more adult lit because I found the problems both Ashley and Megan were facing so relatable.

I loved seeing Ashley work on her writing and figure out how she was going to chase her dream. I loved that Megan and Megan's story about Nancy inspired and brought Ashley's passion back to life. Also Ashley and Nancy's relationship made me so happy. I loved how Nancy became a grandmother to her.

I didn't see the ending coming with this one and it has me stressed for the sequel! I hope things work out for everyone, but I feel like someone will be heartbroken and I don't want that for my baby gays. Overall, really glad I read this one!

Rep: White lesbian cis female MCs, Spanish sapphic cis female side character, white sapphic cis female side characters, white gay cis male side character, various white cishet side characters.

Such a sweet story

Ashley is living in New York when she meets Megan when on a night out with her friends. Captivated by Megan, Ashley is determined to get to know her and they end up on a date, which provides Ashley with the perfect story to get her noticed as a writer. Megan’s career goals mean she isn’t sticking around long but fate can’t help but keep bringing the two of them back into each other lives.

A very sweet story about friendship, romance, and finding love unexpectedly. It was quite the ride because of how realistic it was in terms of circumstance, situations, and life just happening. I loved the fact that Ashley met Megan and everything between them was perfect but of course as usual when you find love it is at the worst possible time or can be short lived, so it really is down to fate sometimes.

I enjoyed the sentimental story that supported Megan and Ashley’s connection and relationship. What brought them together and how Megan had been able to provide such inspiration to Ashley was magical. It was that in some ways that lead to the fact the two of them kept meeting but it there were other reasons that happened too, more unlikely and odd ones that make you question how intuitive life is to providing you with the people you need in your life.

Just a lovely story with all the expected ups and downs that come in life, the typical dramas of falling in love, and a true representation of magical moments happening for real. I highly recommend the story and know it will be enjoyed by anyone who loves a good romance.

Thank you to Nicole for providing me with an eCopy of this book ahead of the sequel’s release in April (called The Wedding), which I will also get to read!

First of all, this book didn’t progress at all how I expected it to! The blurb tells you of the instant connection between Ashley and Megan and additionally, I knew that the sequel was called The Wedding, so naturally I assumed that this book would follow the two MCs through their ups and downs and it would end in a proposal, so that the sequel could explore the wedding arc and maybe throw in some more drama. BUT! that’s not at all how it happened!

I mean I guess it kinda did because the book DID end with a proposal just not from the people you would expect it. I really liked how this book kept me on my toes. There were quite a few time jumps and each time there was something new to learn again because of course things had happened in the mean time. I know some people might find the separation between Ashley and Megan counterintuitive to a romance but I think it worked really well because we were able to explore their lives separately.

However, I have a dilemma. (and this is where it gets pretty spoilery, so beware). I like Madison. I like her a lot. And now that I know that the wedding in The Wedding is gonna be Ashley and Madison’s I am scared for her because technically this is still Ashley and Megan’s love story, you know? And if that means Madison’s heart gets broken … then I will be real sad :( (unless of course Madison does something shitty but I feel like she won’t. and even if Ashley realizes she actually loves Megan, and Madison realizes that they are better off apart… this will still end in Madison heartbroken and I will cry.) And that’s that about that :D But maybe I’m wrong and it will all work out differently, since I wasn’t right with my predictions for the first book either.

I have one point to say though and that is that (obvs in a romance novel) there was a big focus on finding love and the idea of soulmates and finding the love of your life, which of course fits the theme. However, there was one quote I feel iffy about: “We, as humans, are biologically designed to fall in love, but that doesn’t mean we get it right the first time.” Since this sentence is written in the context of an article about soulmates it rubbed be the wrong way a little. It sounds very amatonormative to me because certainly not every person needs or wants a romantic love interest in their lives. There is many different kinds of love but in this context it felt very specific towards romance and I wanted to mention this!

A huge thank you to @nsswriting for choosing me to be one of your ARC readers.

Oh my god. This book. My heart. I wasn’t sure what to expect having only just discovered Nicole as an author but this was everything I wanted in a romance. Told through perspectives alternating between Megan and Ashley and set against the iconic backdrop of New York City, this was a beautiful story that warmed my heart but also kept me on my toes.

I honestly don’t know who I adored more — charming, fun and sassy Ashley or determined, energetic and fiery Megan. The connection between them felt so real and I was backing them from the moment they met. I loved the undertone message of “real life doesn’t always go to plan” and the authenticity of the ups and downs experienced throughout their relationship. I flew through the pages so quickly, desperate to find out what happened next as curveballs were dunked here, there and everywhere [pun intended].

The writing was skilled, effortless and easy to read. I was gripped throughout the basketball scenes [even as the least sporty person imaginable], covered with goosebumps as Megan told the story of Nancy and Christopher and left absolutely FUMING at that cliffhanger ending. How can I be left not knowing until spring!? I know for sure who I’m picking for Ashley!

This left me super excited to read ᴄʜᴏᴏꜱᴇ ᴍᴇ and ᴀʀᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ꜱᴛɪʟʟ ᴍɪɴᴇ which I’ve bumped up my TBR. I highly recommend picking this up if you’re looking for a heart warming f/f romance with brilliantly written, engaging characters and a creative non conventional storyline.

I wish my future self could have told my past self to not even bother with this. Plotting inconsistencies, MC's only being on the same page for maybe 25% of the book, unfollowable dialog (disguised as banter where it's one dialog sentence followed by another for an entire page and you loose track of who says what), etc are just scratches of the surface of things I didn't like about this.

I just really didn't care if the MC's got together or not. Which is the antithesis of what a rom is supposed to be about.

My thoughts…

This is not your typical romance by any measure. It does not follow the expected standard formula of the popular contemporary romances of today. There is no sacrifice between Ashley and Megan. There is no declaration of love between them. Most significantly though, there is no HEA for them.

Confused? Don’t be. This is still a romance, it’s just a bit unconventional. Indeed, Nicole does bend the rules for this one, but it works because it’s a part of a series. Readers accept loose ends when they understand there is more to come. Nicole uses this first book to set up the story arc and build the tension between the characters. Readers turn the last page knowing that there’s more to come. If We Meet Again is just the beginning of a much bigger story.

I can’t say too much without giving away critical plot points, but understanding that this romance takes a different path than the typical romance is critical to appreciating the narrative of this story. It took me a few chapters to grasp this. I was frustrated at first because I didn’t understand why Ashley and Megan were taking so long to get together; I questioned the reasonableness of the relationship. However, half way through I began to understand that Megan and Ashley’s romance was a journey, one that needed time and space to develop. Once I understood that, I settled into the storytelling and appreciated the flow of the story.

As for the strengths of this book, the dialogue can not be emphasized enough. It is simply terrific. The numerous scenes in which the friends engage each other in conversation is just plain fun to read. Nicole does a great job capturing the spirit and flavor of the main character’s friendships. I felt their connection to one another. It’s honest and sincere. Most importantly though, it enhances the overall storytelling.

Besides scripting excellent dialogue, Nicole crafts an impressive basketball commentary. The dramatic play-by-play is nothing short of thrilling. She has a real talent for elevating the excitement while describing the game play action. The energy and pulse can be felt with every pivot and turn. Readers get a real feel of the determination and grit on the court. The athleticism and tension hit perfectly, making these scenes a real stand-out.

Overall, this book is easy to read. Told in third person, its linear three year timeline is very easy to follow. It is logically constructed and thoughtfully developed. Its comprehensive approach works for the storyline. Additionally, Nicole’s writing style is comfortable and has a cadence and rhythm to it that can be respected. However, there are a few word choice errors and awkward sentences that did bother me some. I wish those would have been weeded out in the editing process.

Final remarks…

If We Meet Again is an intriguing story and the storytelling is definitely engaging. It’s easy to become invested in Ashley and Megan’s journey; Nicole sets it up quite nicely. She leaves the story arc wide open for so many possibilities. What those will be is anyone’s guess. Unfortunately readers will have to wait until the spring of 2022 to see what happens next.

Strengths…

Well-scripted dialogue
Interesting characters
Fantastic sports cometary
Creative storyline

Trigger Warnings: Drinking, sex, divorce, break-up, cheating, coming out, deceased parent

Representation: Gay (both female and male)

If We Meet Again is the story of aspiring writer/editor, Ashley, and aspiring WNBA player, Megan, who meet in a bar one night. Time continues to connect and disconnect the girls throughout the story until they meet a final time at a wedding renewal ceremony for Megan’s grandmother. Will these two ever get together?

This was a great story! I loved the cliche first lesbian date being more than a day! I have to say though that the back and forth really took me on a ride! All I want is a happy ending!

Overall, the story was well written and had very like-able characters. I enjoyed the up’s and downs that occurred, making the story very relatable. The writing style was easy to read and made the book very entertaining. I loved the banter between characters, as well as the flaws seen in each of our heroines. I felt like this story was not a typical rom-com but still provided the hope we all wish for in our main couple.

Thank you to the author for reaching out to me about this lovely sapphic romance, If We Meet Again, ahead of the sequel’s release in April (called The Wedding)!

Megan and Ashley meet in Ashley’s local bar in NYC. Sparks instantly fly across the room; powerful eye contact leads the way for a powerful chemistry. In realistic form, however - life gets in the way! The two begin a rocky path, with many ups and downs to ride through. Whilst an unorthodox approach to a romance novel, it definitely works to build towards the sequel.

If you’re not a fan of cliffhangers, well, lucky you, as the wait is almost up for the sequel. Usually I wouldn’t love a cliffhanger, but I feel confident in the way the story will end for Megan and Ashley (after a few more ups and downs!). This is a lovely, quirky queer novel that really shows the reality of ‘right person wrong time’, which is a very frustrating but overall enjoyable trope!

I loved Ashley and Megan so much and felt their chemistry through the pages. I wanted nothing more than for these two to be together from the start but life circumstances kept them apart. This book ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to dive into book two (the only reason I haven't already is because of ARC deadlines) but I can't wait to see how their story continues.

I'm a basketball mom so I absolutely loved the fact that Megan is a basketball player trying to make it to the WNBA.

I came across Nicole via bookstagram and I am so glad I did. I have a handful of queer authors that are auto buy for me and I'm always happy to find more and Nicole is now definitely on my auto buy list.

I cannot get enough of this couple! The chemistry between Ashley and Megan oozed off the page. The friendships added a real fun element. I have read this authors first two books and I must say this is the best - no disrespect intended of course 🙈 I read it over a week ago and I’m tempted to read it again!!

Is it weird if I create a # for this couple? Maybe #Ashgan or #Megley - I’ll work on it. The point is I loved this book … it was funny … it was romantic … it was easy to read … it really sets the scene for this couple and the little spoiler at the end I won’t give away, but I’m excited for what’s to come from this author xoxo

I loved all the characters in this book.
It’s not a super dramatic storyline.
But it is very touching.
I found the timeline to be wonderful too.
It’s clear to me who in this book are meant to be together and who need to just be friends.
It’s so frustrating!!! And heartwrenching! But also so heartwarming!
I loved it!!
Can’t wait to start the second book.

I hate how relatable this book was. The whole “right person, wrong time” is something that pains me to my core. Feeling an instant connection with someone but knowing that the timing isn’t right, and won’t ever be right is painful, but a reality for so many. It is a very sweet story in terms of friendship, relationships, and discovering oneself.

The story jumps from occasions that Megan and Ashley’s paths cross. Each time they meet, there is some sort of hinderance as to why they cannot be together. They also have closely intertwined lives, even though they don’t know it.

The support they show for one another, even if they aren’t together, is always heartwarming and lovely. I found myself wanting to scream multiple times at the characters to just get together already.

This book was very real and very “normal” as to real life.

OMG the yearning. This book was giving me mini heartbreaks all throughout. Fortunately that book 2 is out or I would throw my kindle across the room when I'm left with a cliffhanger at the end.

This book is the epitome of “right person, wrong time." I think Ashley and Megan are connected by a red string that keeps them tied together regardless of where they are. Honestly, this book has me on the edge the whole time because I too want to know the answer if soulmates exist, if destiny is real, and if there's such a thing as a right person.
I like the flow of this book in general. The writing keeps me engaged. I don't know if this was intentional, but some characters are just blips to me and then turn out to be important later on.
Overall, this is a good build-up to the second book.

I absolutely loved this book, and the other two in the authors trilogy. It had me laughing, crying, feeling so much for the characters (Ashley, Megan & all of the supporting friends & family), and their journey. The author has such a gift for writing. I couldn’t put the book/s down, and read them in record time.

Good, but….

Well written, with lots of endearing characters and little asides.

Not much in the way of follow through with some of the side characters and their plots, which is disappointing.

The main character Ashley at one points cites her sister as being completely self absorbed. Which is interesting because our girl Ashley seems to be quite self absorbed. She moved to the city 3 years ago to become a writer or editor for a major magazine or newspaper. But she doesn’t write. She doesn’t do anything but ‘sex in the city’ hang outs with her two roommates and working at a bar. Their is nothing wrong with either of those things, but she has no drive. She has no effort given. She just lays there and talks about being a writer without writing. She even mentions how she has more passion than anyone else in New York for this particular dream.

Whatever her justifications and whatever her reasonings, Ashley seems to have no care given in regards to others feelings. Or her own. I’m sure that the author intended for her character to come off as introspective, with a plot of finding herself, but Ashley’s personality comes off as wilfully ignorant of all the people she’s emotionally bulling through and over.

Her character winds up working with the New York Times, and writing little snazzy opinion pieces on relationships. They come off as condescending, particularly when taking into account that her most successful romantic relationship up to that point was being used as a personal booty call for a sociopath.

If the reader of this review is familiar at all with the manga NTR: Netsuzou Trap, the characterisation of the MC Ashley feels familiar. Just a selfish, greedy girl who doesn’t have empathy or compassion for others while she careens through the story. Throw in a few asides from secondary characters about how kind and willing she is to serve and help out others, and the character doesn’t come off as balanced or likeable.

Add in the cliff hanger ending designed to force the second book read, and I was left incredibly disappointed in this book. Knowing that no matter how the second book picks up, the MC is going to be incredibly cruel to two love interests who both deserve far better than her, and it makes me personally hope the author will have a moment of clarity, have Ashley get hit by a bus, and then Megan and Maddison can console one another over her comatose body until they pull the plug on her and they can live happily ever after, with someone who can actually feel love.

Wow. I can't really explain how much i love this book but i fucking love it 😍
It may take a few pages to get into it, but once i did, i could not put the book down.
The story never really got old. With every page turned, there was something new and refreshing. There were a few revelations that shocked me.

The slow burn between Megan and Ashley is so brilliantly written, and it ties in so well with the right person wrong time trope. The pining between them is just so gut-wrenching to read about but so beautiful at the same time.

More about their individual life was written than the interactions between the two, but i feel like this was the perfect decision.
I don't know how it happened, but because of this, i felt more connected to the main characters. I knew more about their personal lives, so i cared more about them. They got me tearing up, laughing and being disappointed at them at some pages, but they were both really loveable.
Also, i felt that the number of interactions that they had was enough to satisfy me, and it made sense with the story. Whenever they interacted, sparks fly, and the chemistry between the two is undeniable. Their interactions always make me swoon.

I loved the fact that the story was written across a few years, and not everything is being told to us, maybe in passing but not the actual event with the nitty gritty details just the more important ones.
The careers that both Megan and Ashley are pursuing are also really interesting to read about and add more depth to the story.

Last but not least, the side characters were so well written, and they had so much character that it really made the book even more enjoyable.

So overall, it's a good book that i would have no problem reading again. Now on to the next book!

I feel bad leaving a negative review when I DNFd before 25%, but I just couldn’t put up with it any longer than that.
Long winded and just generally bad writing that made me struggle to get into the book, kept zoning out or cringing.
Stinted dialogue, clunky writing, stiff and amateur feeling overall, honestly I’ve read better fanfiction. The Pov also seems to randomly switch to a birds eye view narration halfway through second chapter? Then back again?
I really loved the cover and premise but I just couldn’t get into it at all, with some rewriting and editing it could definitely have potential to be a great light read, but right now with the above issues it’s just not for me (sorry!)

3.5 stars!!! have been meaning to read this one for awhile! really liked it - however the further i got through and realised i wouldn’t get the satisfaction of the megan and ashley endgame that i so desperately wanted had me wanting more. definitely glad i decided to read this when the other two books in the series were already out. i don’t always loveeeee a story where i feel as though the mc is being entirely unfair (ashley clearly had feelings for megan throughout - even up until and after her proposal to madison) though i understand that life works like that sometimes! looking forward to reading the other two and seeing where their story goes!

I was gifted this book in preparation for an ARC reading of the upcoming sequel! Thank you so much Nicole for reaching out to me for this one❤️

It’s been a long time since I devoured a book so fast but this is an easy 5 🌟 read for me. Nicole’s writing is gorgeous and the way she wrote Ashley and Megan’s story is perfect! This book is all about love and friendship and finding yourself before you can find your person. Wrong place wrong time or the one who got away?

I cannot wait for book two to see what happens next!
