“a sword in one hand, a flower in the other; symbolizing the power to end the world, but with a heart as gentle as a flower.”

this book really knows how to rip your heart out of your chest, because what the actual fuck.

i can’t help but give this 5 stars. the relationship between xie lian, feng xin, and mu qing was everything i possibly wanted. this book added so much more crucial information, gave us the insight we never had to their characters before. not to mention a young hua cheng, who meets the crown prince and just so happens to become his most loyal follower? perfection. their paths intertwined long before the main story even took place, making their relationship all the more beautiful and heartbreaking.

some spoilers ahead!!

i have so much to talk about but i’m going to start this review off by saying how i absolutely loved xie lian’s character in this book. he’s so young and naive; he grew up sheltered and spoiled but truly wants the best for everyone. he has good intentions and so desperately wants to help the common people, but sometimes good intentions just aren’t enough. at the end of the day he is one person, and one person can only do so much.

”He persisted, “For what should I live for in this world? What does it mean to live?”
“If you don’t know how to live on anymore, then live for me.”

i lived for the hua cheng and xie lian scenes— from when he first met him, to years later, defending him and still believing in xie lian even when the world was against him. this book just added so much more meaning to their relationship— and the ending??? OUCH. i’m so excited to see how their relationship continues to develop in book three, while eagerly awaiting for the day that xie lian finally knows that hua cheng is the same boy from his past.

His other hand circled around Mu Qing’s shoulders, and Xie Lian sighed. “Thank goodness you two helped today. Thank you for staying by my side."
Xie Lian squeezed, pulling the other two close, and said ernestly, “Not just for today, but for always, thank you so much. I hope the sight of the three of us standing together fighting will become a tale for ages.”

AHHHHHHH!!!! I LOVE THEM!!! so many thoughts and so many emotions when it comes to these three. after being constantly told throughout the first book about their history, we finally get to experience their bond before everything fell apart. the relationship between the three of them is so complex and so completely devastating it hurts. from feng xin’s fierce, unending loyalty to mu qing’s caring personality that is so easily overshadowed by his cold demeanor.

the scene of them hugging added twenty years onto my life— while simultaneously murdering me because of all the foreshadowing; how xie lian believed they would always be together, their friendship never-ending. i somehow managed to fall in love with these characters even more (i really did not think it was possible) and can’t wait to see more of their relationship in book three.

“Otherwise I’ll break up my relationship with you, and you’ll be cursed to never find a wife!” Xie Lian threatened.
Feng Xin “pfft”-ed. “You’d break up with me?! The day after our breakup everyone in the Kingdom of Xianle will know one thing: His Highness the Crown Prince fainted from overly tight suspenders while dressing himself!”

FENG XIN AND XIE LIAN!! i so desperately need to talk about them specifically because oh my god??? the evidence is right there folks, they are literal EXES!!! was genuinely crying my eyes out at how much they care about each other; the scene where feng xin just so easily broke his own arm without hesitation, all for xie lian??? how feng xin was appointed as his attendant at fourteen, like they are literal childhood friends— what’s not to love???? feng xin is always so quick to come to his defense; he has such a deep, unending loyalty for xie lian that it wouldn’t even matter whether he's ascended or not, as long as he’s with him. i absolutely adore their relationship so much (both platonically and romantically) and it’s easily been a huge highlight for me throughout the story.

i now have so much love for mu qing— i loved him in the first book but after this it's a whole new level??? his relationship with both xie lian and feng xin was so fun to read; he truly cares for both of them, but often clashes with them (especially feng xin) because of his feelings of inferiority, believing that they look down on him and don't see him as a friend or equal. they all just need to go to therapy together and give each other hugs… i’m desperately awaiting a reconciliation scene (in book 5?) so bad ):

In the midst of pouring tears, he cried: “I WON’T FORGET.”
“I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!”

have to talk about that ending scene real quick because yeah, i cried. it was such a heart wrenching way to transition into book three and let me tell you, i will be looking at all the hua cheng and xie lian interactions in a new light now. i love their relationship so so much and can’t wait for more moments back in present time. these next three books will probably be pure heartache for me but i’m diving in anyways!

i can already sense my impending doom with book four approaching….. the angst...

This book deals completely in the past. Gives us an insight to what happened during the mortal lifetime of Xie Lian and his first ascension to heaven and his first fall from it. In a way the story is nothing but heartache and damage. I wish there was even a little where you could say it had some beautiful moments but unfortunately now.
It was not that Xie Lian took the wrong decisions but rather that every decision he took gave flawed consequences. My heart hurt for XL as he tried over and over again to control the calamities he faced but everything ended on a bad note.
What really hurt me was how close Feng Xing and Mu Qing were with XL and the sour nature of their current situation. Especially Feng Xing. He was one of the most ardent and loyal followers. But what really drove them apart? Was it really XL’s fall from grace? There seemed to be more to that story.
Also you have to be extra stupid to not know who this kid was. The moment XL tied the lock of hair on his finger, my suspicions were solidified. Now we have to wait till XL remember who this child really is.
Now let’s dive headfirst into the the third book once again.

"No olvidaré. Nunca te olvidaré"

¡¡¡Los amo mucho!!!

Solo quiero paz y felicidad en la parte tres, no es mucho pedir... ¿o si?

A sword in one hand, a flower in the other; symbolizing “the power to end the world, but with a heart as gentle as a flower”
this started as a four-star, then downgraded to a three-and-a-half-star, then the goddamn plague happened and bitch... i liked this one quite a lot even though i raged and cried and wanted to throw fists with some characters. i was gonna give it 3 but i'm gonna be lenient and still give it 3.5 for alienation reasons lol i did have fun and i did want to throttle characters and i did stay up until late reading 100 pages per night.

the hualian scenes were so sweet (minus the cave one bc honestly, what the fuck?)... i was so sad that we didn't get much of them, but the ones we got were worth the wait. i just feel bad for hua cheng because the little guy is always"🥺 your highness 🥺" and every single time xie lian forgets he already knows him..... POOR HUA CHENG!!! ARE YOU TAKING YOUR DAILY INTAKE OF VITAMIN B12, YOUR HIGHNESS???? I DONT THINK YOU ARE FOR CHRIST'S SAKE YOUR MEMORY IS TERRIBLE HELP
He persisted, “For what should I live for in this world? What does it mean to live?”
However, his questions were met by silence, not a soul to give him answers. It seemed that the young boy had expected as much and, slowly, dropped his head.
To his surprise, suddenly, a voice from above broke through the dead silence: “If you don’t know how to live on anymore, then live for me.”
[...]
“If you don’t know the meaning of your life, then make me that meaning, and use me as your reason to live."
a bitch is sad and heartbroken. hua cheng literally had nothing and found a reason to live in xie lian 😭💔 (this sounds unhealthy but xie lian is a god so its not that bad just thoroughly religious?!??) he's been through so much..... CAN THE AUTHOR GIVE HIM A DAMN BREAK???? GOD!!!!! anyway. there was a scene during the cave where those flower demons implied that even if hua cheng dreamed for eight hundred years he would still never have xie lian and BITCH....... were they wrong.
Xie Lian breathed a sigh, and said to him in a soft voice, “Forget me.”
That boy was stunned and silent.
Xie Lian continued to talk to himself, “Let it go. Soon, no one will remember anyway.”
[...]
In the midst of pouring tears, he cried: “I WON’T FORGET. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!”

the god-pleasing crown prince mostly depicted xie lian's life around the time he was going to first ascend—how he was and the people around him. mu qing and feng was already there with him as his left and right hands.

this book is filled with the violence and gore of warfare and plagues. readers finally get a deep dive into what caused the downfall of xianle kingdom including the white-faced ghost, and the ties that brought young hua cheng and the ascended xie lian together. i got to say, seeing how hua cheng would do anything to protect xie lian throughout the whole ordeal was painful and upsetting. qi rong was an insufferable brat that has a penchant for violence and bloodlust. he may be devoted to xie lian but it transformed into something sinister and unhealthy.

xie lian was more naive and optimistic of the world in this flashback. he fiercely believed that he could save his people from death and violence but the situation just worsens. despite everything, everyone can see that he really love his kingdom but is at a loss at what to do. also, the things that happened in this part just hints that a greater force might be at play.

books in the series:
1. crimson rain sought flower: ✰✰✰✰
2. the god-pleasing crown prince: ✰✰✰✰
3. no paths are bound: ✰✰✰✰
4. white-clothed calamity: ✰✰✰✰
5. heaven official’s blessing: ✰✰✰✰✰

I clicked so fast on episode 87 but to my dismay it was so short! Nothing like Hualian and Starember's art to make a person feel so happy. I LOVED the scene that happened in episode 87💖! I've written several look book reviews of Heaven's Official Blessing, so I'll keep this one short because sometimes less is more:

-HUALIAN IS SUPERIOR FROM MOST SHIPS
-Starember's art is absolutely gorgeous 🥲
-The slow-burn is fantastic
-The world-building is spectacular
-I need more episodes

a whole book centered around xie lian's backstory? say less. minor spoilers ahead since this is the second book!

i won't say much about this book, but i will say that it's hard to see a comfort character go through a shit load of intense pressure and watch them make difficult choices that you aren't sure if they're right or wrong. but i was happy to see the "what should i live for in this world?" "live for me." scene play out because that was probably the happiest point in the book for me. everything else was just suffering.

it was also really gratifying to see the little cookie crumbs tossed out throughout this story: the umbrella, the white flower that connects to hua cheng's name, the start of painting, xie lian tying a lock of hair around hua cheng's finger (connects to hua cheng tying the red string of fate around his own finger later ALSO it's a traditional wedding ritual symbolizing "til death do us part"??? im gonna lose my shit), etc.. it added a little spark to my eyes as i read along, constantly eating up all these little, meaningful details.

but i also have to talk about the cave scene because what the fuck was that. i was hysterical throughout that entire scene because it was just so bizarre to me. but i will say this: when that flower demon specifically targeted little hua cheng, saying "oh i bet your favorite type looks like this" and little hua cheng seemed to have stopped breathing, i know that shit must've looked like xie lian.

last thing i wanted to mention was the author's note.

We've finally reached this point...in a broken and defeated temple with a soon-to-be forgotten god and a young devout follower was the first image that floated in my mind for this novel, and was also what first gave me the impulse to write it. I'm the kind that would write up an entire book just for a scene...all this plot-planning exhausted me..."

i love this detail because i always find it so admirable and interesting what spurs authors to write and write and write. this author's note also made me laugh because that plot-planning would've exhausted me too; i don't know how this author does it. and with that, i'm off to book three!

And now we hit my only complaint with HoB. I find the past-vs-present isn't handled as well as it was in Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation/Mo Dao Zu Shi. MDZS only flashbacks as needed and as is relevant to current events. HoB takes a whole book to go retell Xie Lian's history in detail. Most almost all of it we already knew from Book 1. I feel like it could have been condensed down to only the new information, or better woven through the 'present' as history becomes relevant. Unfortunately Book 2 felt like a filler season and I was impatiently waiting for the 'real' story to start again. Don't get me wrong, there were some great scenes and revelations. But I feel content could have been cut to just those, with less repeating.

3.5 stars rounding down to 3. I'd like to give it more, but it felt like a lengthy info-dump that wasn't quite needed. Or wasn't needed to be quite this long. Most of the info in this book we already knew from hints and arguments in book 1.

(After having finished the series, I'm even more convinced of this. Book 4 was another entire novel of flashback, but it was NEW information. It developed the characters and their history so much more than this flashback-novel did.)

Translation notes: There's also only one translation still online from this point on, currently. And there is an unfortunate translator choice of having people yell full sentences/paragraphs in all caps. It detracts from the situation/content and makes characters seem like angry children instead of adults.

The three of them turned their heads, and saw the single eye of that boy, so bright it pierced the soul; that battered face was both furious and sad, both joyous and wild.
In the midst of pouring tears, he cried: “I won't forget. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!”

So yeah I binged book 2 today. It’s a holiday!
Was it a responsible decision? Not necessarily- I slept at two am because I was trying to finish book one. I woke up at 7 am because sooomeone forgot to disable their alarm! (Yeah, it was me). I’m sleep deprived and probably need rest- did that stop me? No. I read this because I desperately wanted to know what happened next.

This book didn’t give me the answers I was looking for. It’s set 800 years in the past- 800 years too early for the events that have got me so hyped.

How do I phrase this?

O yeah this book is PAIN.

Remember how I said I’d rage and die if something bad happened to Xie Lian?

I think somehow Book Two heard my declaration and decided to make that come true.

This is a undoubtedly beautiful book. It’s a worthy backstory/prequel/whatever. It’s my favorite book so far. Yes it caused me emotional damage 1000...

But it was worth it. It’s beautiful. I cried.

Actually 3.5 for me. This was quite exhausting. A lot of politics, a lot of details, not a lot of magical, exiting fantasy stories. I got board sometimes. It was important for us to know what happened to Xie Lian but way too long for me. Probably will take a break before book #3
