The last volume of this beautiful manga. The king is executed and then Marie Antoinette's trial starts. Later she is executed too with chants of long live the revolution. With this, the story ends. I loved this manga a lot though I have to say the first few volumes were more solid and had more drama to them.

This review covers all 10 volumes. 0.5/5.
I understand that Rose of Versailles was an inspiration for a lot of mangaka and is your favorite manga's favorite manga, but this shit SUCKS. My god. First of all, the Oscar and Andre plotline.. when did Oscar even start liking Andre? I never got the switch up, it came out of NOWHERE. Second of all, the art. Jesus Christ. There would be scenes where a dramatic beat was happening and they'd randomly be naked and I stopped taking it seriously in like Volume 3 or 4. I wouldn't say it's completely fair to assume the manga would hit the French Revolution beat for beat but whew did it feel like an afterthought. Now, yes that may be because I had just finished

This review is for the whole series.

Rose of Versailles grew my fascination towards French Revolution and mostly towards Marie Antoinette and her sad demise.

The story itself actually centered around Oscar de Jarjeyes a woman dressed as man and became a soldier because her father is among the highest rank of nobility in Versailles.
Oscar then met and built a close friendship with Marie Antoinette and watch her throughout the course of her life. Oscar was also there when Antoinette first met the love of her life, Hans Axel Von Fersen.

But along the way, Oscar and Antoinette went their separate ways because Oscar disagree with Antoinette spending and she actually in mind with the revolutionary ideas and turn her back on nobility.

And finally the revolution came and torn their lives apart.

During its time, Rose of Versailles receive huge commercial success and critics acclamation. It is said to be the most influention shoujo manga ever written

There are probably few manga series that have had the cultural impact or importance for the medium of Rose of Versailles but probably far fewer readers these days. it doesn't quite have the same impact today and I think a lot of that has to do with historical fiction not being in vogue in the medium as much as magical girl or modern day romance stories might be. For me, too, it's not a particularly focussed work and that bothers me - it starts out as a history of Marie Antoinette, shifts to being about Rosalie and then shifts to being more about Oscar, and it only really finds its feet when Ikeda nails down what she wants or *can* do with Oscar ... now don't get me wrong, it's progressive as all hell and I love it, but I can only judge a work in its entirety and in hindsight Rose of Versailles doesn't deliver consistently over its run. At it's best it's a beautiful thing though and one can only marvel at how it may have inspired Japanese women to think "sure, I can be that, I can present as that or I can be attracted to that"

one thing rose of versailles makes clear is that romance stories are not simply silly stories for women and girls, inside of a romance story we can always discuss important societal issues such as class and gender inequality

Definitely liked the first few volumes more because of their exploration of gender and violence especially w jeanne, who I thought was such an interesting character and a perfect example of how this manga is refreshingly honest and well meaning in its portrayal of women. Tbh I don’t really know how to interpret oscar’s turn to cisness and heterosexuality towards the end — because of utena I’m more inclined toward reading it as kind of a mental break w oscar giving in to the pressure of their father and grappling with both andre’s feelings and disability, especially considering how uncomfortable andre and other straight men have made her in the past by forcing themselves upon her and degendering her as opposed to her clearly embracing women as potential romantic partners even when they make her confused about her own gender. But if that wasn’t the intent, just such an odd choice writing wise given her feelings and experiences throughout the story

Overall i enjoyed it .. I never would’ve seen myself viewing marie antoinette as a victim but seeing her forced into her position as a child by imperial patriarchy was an interesting perspective!

I cannot begin to share my love for this story and the beautiful characters. The classic illustration is gorgeous and detailed. I am always swept away by this story, having seen the anime twice and now read the manga series. I am now convinced the anime needs a remake to more accurately follow the manga and leave out the unnecessary conspiracies/drama :) A story of love and revolution that will always be close to my heart. Vive la France!

I remember watching the anime when i was a kid and i really liked the story back then. I felt strongly for Lady Oscar but reading this manga 10 years later is not the same thing. I don't really know what to think of all of this, except that sometimes it's best to not go back to childhood because there is a risk of ruining good memories...
