The Ancients and the Aeons. Two groups of powerful immortals on the brink of destruction, and at the heart of it all stands Wynter Dellavale.
Wynter is a witch who once sought sanctuary for herself and her coven in Devil's Cradle. Better known as 'the Home of Monsters', it was a place for outcasts and fugitives. She now wears the brand of Cain, the infamous Ancient, who has claimed her soul for all of eternity and doesn't plan on ever letting go.
Together, Wynter and Cain have prevailed over many powerful enemies, but now they face their final - and most terrifying - battle. As the last Aeon left standing, the all-powerful Adam is out for revenge. His terms: Cain and Wynter in exchange for peace. If Devil's Cradle won't deliver them, the full force of Adam's devastating rage will fall upon them all. As the stakes are raised, Cain and Wynter will do whatever it takes to defeat Adam and keep each other safe, even if it means unleashing the monsters that live within them . . .

As a huge SW fan, I kept thinking something was wrong with me for not loving books 1 and 2. And I kept thinking it was just timing. I re-read them both and ended up upgrading book 2 to 3-ish stars (from my original 2 star rating) which gave me hope I would love this final installment. Sadly, such was not the case. I don’t know why, but this series just didn’t hit for me the way her books usually do. I’ll just call it a loss and assume it’s me lol. The price tag was also a lot higher than her usual books.
I’ll still read whatever she puts out next. Can’t win them all.
The Monsters We Are could have been brilliant but it just lost its steam. The conflict kept dragging and dragging, the relationship between Cain and Wynter, while sometimes incredibly hot, was a lot of telling and I wanted more between the two of them.
The secondary characters were almost primary characters and I was desperate for Cain and Wynter to be and do MORE. More passion, more intimacy, more alpha maleness, more internal entity play, more just everything.
I will always read anything Suzanne puts out but I just didn’t love this like I thought I would.
I absolutely love this author and will read just about anything she writes. That being said, I think this trilogy should have been a standalone or a series similar to her shifter books where each one focuses on a different character.
I would recommend only reading this first book in this series as books two and three are pretty much exactly the same as book one. Same conversations, same battles, same love scenes, same EVERYTHING. No character growth, no surprises… nothing interesting. 🫠 I’m only giving this two stars because It hurts too much to give one.
3 stars only because it is better than the second part. I'm glad they got their happy ending, but I don't think I'll be reading the other characters' stories if there gonna be any.
I've been highly anticipating the final book and this completes the trilogy. In readiness to fully appreciate this, I did a complete reread of books one and two. I've adored this series and this author is a definite auto-buy for me. I especially appreciate her female FMCs and just how put together and non-game playing they all are which Wynter was typical of. Wynter is such an icon and I adored her. I also loved the dynamic she and Cain share and how far he is willing to go to keep her safe even though she's more than capable of protecting herself.
This had all of the action and humorous camaraderie of its predecessors. The sense of found family is high and Wynter's coven was badass. This brought closure as the Ancients finally brought the fight to Aeon's doorstep in a dramatic finale that had me on the edge of my seat in pure gleeful anticipation. We finally received answers to all of the open questions and I was left feeling satisfied at the conclusion.
I recommend this trilogy especially if you are partial to strong female leads, found family and a humorous overtone sprinkled in within all of the serious stuff. If you like yourself a ruthless predatory immortal with a possessive streak a mile wild this should tick your boxes and more. I've enjoyed myself it's been a bloody blast all around.
I always love and hate getting to the end of a trilogy.
You get all your answers and everything gets tied up into a perfect bow, but then you are also done.
The gift is given and while you can go back and relisten (which I have already done), the anticipation is gone.
The waiting that we hate so much is gone.
Anyone who has followed me for long enough knows Suzanne Wright is my unicorn author. The only author who can do no wrong in my mind. So really, my reviews are useless because I will never leave a bad one for her, because she has not written a book I won't relisten to over and over again. I really hope she continues this series and brings us some of these crazies in their own books.
Suzanne Wright closes the trilogy with power and intensity. The Monsters We Are takes everything built in the first two books and delivers a storm of action, secrets, and passion. The heroine is bold, the hero is dark yet loyal, and their bond feels unbreakable. What stands out is the way Wright shows that even in a world of monsters, love and loyalty define who we truly are.
The final book in Wynter and Cain’s story. I have waited years!
Let me preface this by saying I love Suzanne Wright. I have read almost her entire backlist and she writes a lot. She has a great balance of over the top protective and possessive men who also recognize the strength and capabilities of the heroines. There is plot and spice. She is one of my favorite romance authors. This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me though.
I really do love Cain and Wynter’s relationship. They are completely committed to each other. Burn the world down type of love. They have great communication and even though there is a part of Cain that wants to wrap her in bubble wrap he admires how strong and capable she is. Wynter is capable of protecting herself but she is willing to make some concessions to ease Cain’s anxiety. She doesn’t push away his help or protection just for the sake of it. But if he pushes it too far she stands her ground.
I wish Cain and Wynter had felt more like a team and we had seen them together more during the action scenes in the story. Wynter is often with her coven and Cain with the other ancients. They would take care of business or strategize separately then come back together. Why are we not combining forces here?
I have always loved the side characters from Suzanne Wrights other series. There is usually a great found family but this series didn’t deliver on it for me. Wynter’s coven, while hilarious at times, was almost too much. Hattie with her sex questions and Xavier always lying. It became repetitive and overdone. They felt like comic relief and not characters you really want to get to know or add value. Cain and the ancients weren’t much better. There was always a level of distrust between them. Something was missing. I would love an Azazeal and Annabel book though. They were bright spots.
This is Suzanne Wrights most ambitious world so far. Gods, ancients, aeons, millennia long wars and grudges. It was a lot and I almost wish I would have done a reread of books 1 and 2. Everything came together at the end and we see how a lot of strings had been pulled along the way. I knew at some point someone was going to betray them but I was never completely sure. It kept me guessing.
Overall some good and some bad. I would absolutely read more books in this world though. All hail Queen Suzanne.
This was a SW series that for some reason I don’t really connect with. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, and there are hilarious moments (the coven) but compared to other books and series that I’ve read and reread, this was just .. ehh
So this concludes the Devil's Cradle series... well, I am a bit disappointed, I have to say. I expected a tad bit more than the previous two books provided (action, danger, steam, humour etc.), sure, the final book has it all, even the GREAT finale BUT all I got out of this journey is a flat epilogue, sure there was a grand battle everyone was coming to, the danger lingering above Wynter's head, Cain being his dangerous protective self (even though he's bound by the curse)... BUT the actual "light" of the story were secondary characters, especially Wynter's Coven...so cause of them the rating bar is 3 stars...
* You need to read the previous books before diving into this entry.
Wynter and Cain Has dispelled their enemies for now, but with the death of his beloved son they know that Adam will do anything in his power to exact revenge. And they are not disappointed, because Adam soon tries to sow unrest in Devil's Cradle by placing a bounty on Wynter and Cain's head. With the kidnapping attempts and looming war that follows, Cain and Wynter have their hands full, however Kali might have different plans for Wynter and something might also be stirring between underneath Devil's Cradle that might change the tides of war forever.
Pro's: + The action scenes in this story where sublime and I guess people would rarely expect them in a book like this. There was a lot of tension in the scenes and at times they got so wild and crazy that I couldn't help myself grinning at the wildness of it. + Even looking back, the characters in this book where great and even the side characters really got to shine in this book. From the dynamics between Cain and Wynter to the bonds between the coven and the place of the Ancients in the world, it has all written really well. + I am usually not into christian themed books, but in this setting it was very easy to read and the interpretation was something new to me. Even the sprinkling of other religions was believable and worked really well in this setting.
Con's: - The sex scenes got boring quickly and after two I started skipping them, as the rest of the story was so much more fun and exciting than the forced kinky scenes that didn't really do anything for me. One or two scenes throughout the book would have been great, but it felt like sex for the sake of sex, so that is mweh.
This was a great finale to this series and I'm a bit sad that I have to leave all these great characters behind. I hope there is something more for this universe on the horizon, because this world and the way it was build was great. The way religion was used was the only way it would ever be palpable for me, as it was not taken in its usual context, but using these characters in a completely different manner. It gave the book a real fantasy vibe and the action scenes where really worth the read, as this book was easy to read and unique enough to keep you interested until the ending. Really recommend if you want to read something different.
When I was reading the first book in the series, I discovered the third book on Netgalley. Since I was really enjoying myself with the first book, I put in my request for the third book right away and I was very happy that Piatkus granted me a digital copy. And then I forgot to read the second book, which means I could only start reading this third book last week.
This series is a mix of so many amazing elements. Yes, this is firstly a romance, but this romance has an exciting plot with a lot of danger and quite power opponents trying to rip the happily ever after away from Wynter and Cain. The mythology can get a little complicated at times, even in this third book new things are being added, and yet I love how the author used all those Biblical characters and elements to craft this story.
I must admit that this third book dragged a little at times. As a reader you know it’s a matter of time before the final confrontation will take place. The author finds some ways to delay that moment and make the book longer, but those delays don’t add much. The relationship is already quite established by now and we know that Adam is a horrible person.
However, I really loved how everything came together in the end. There were still a few unanswered questions and those were all answered by the end of the novel. Some small remarks are worked into the finale in a great way and when I read the epilogue I had a huge smile on my face. I will miss those characters. The author did an amazing job giving them an edge, while still making it easy to care about them.
I will for sure check out other books by this author in the future!
I received this from Netgally in exchange for an honest review.
There were three things I realised when I was about 10% into the book. 1) I was going to really enjoy this! 2) This was the final installment in the series 3) The above realisation wasn't enought to stop me reading once I'd started, because I was already hooked. The only regret I have is that I didn't read the other two books first because I obviously missed it on so much fun, character and relationship building. But I didn't want to stop so I didn't.
I adored the relationships between everyone, some were more tense than others but most were fun, especially the interactions between Wynter and her coven! Despite coming into this book blind and ignorant to everything, I was immediately drawn into the world and easily picked up on the world building which was delivered flawlessly. Everything happened almost in the background so I feel like I just absorbed the information without having to process it.
Cain and Wynter's relationship is solid, they are together and it feels real. They both understand each other in a way that catches the other off guard at times and I loved it. No silly misunderstandings or falling out. If there's a problem, they talk about it and that is gold to me.
It was spicy and thankfully it happens organically, there's no silly spice for the sake of adding it in or using it as filler or inappropriately timed. There is feeling, possession and obsession from both sides.
There were so many characters and so many things to live and hate about them. Even though some of the events in the book were a bit predictable, it was still very enjoyable. I think I'll just go back and start the series from the start.
I felt this was written by a teenage boy. The way the sex scenes were written felt very immature, maybe that was the vibe she was going for. I haven’t read the other books in the trilogy and wouldn’t bother. The author is British but writes and spells like an American. She was also very repetitive. I did read the whole book as I find it difficult to give up on any book. You don’t find out who Wynters father is, not sure if this is known in the other books. There were odd comments made through the book by the coven, these seemed very unnecessary and did but add to the characters. Anyway it ends as you’d expect so no surprise there then.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I must confess, this book has cost me a bit of sleeping time as have the first two. I couldn’t put it down. As Hattie would say, “It was a real page turner.” I love Wynter’s and Cain’s story and I would love for the side characters to find their HEA too!
The Monsters We Are is the final book in the Devil’s Cradle trilogy, and honestly? I’m just glad it’s over. Each book held my attention less than the last, and this one felt like all talk, no action.
On top of that, the romance had some definite yikes moments that didn’t sit well with me.
While I usually love Suzanne Wright’s books, this series just wasn’t for me. That said, I’m still looking forward to her future work—just not about these main characters..
This is bittersweet. I’m so happy that these two got their HEA that being said I’m sad to say goodnight. Though with Suzanne, you never know…
Winter’s continuous kidnapping, I found hilarious. I just don’t understand why people thought they can win. If I was them, I would have never even attempted😂
Book three has all the things I enjoyed about in book 1 & 2. I loved Winter’s relationship with her coven. No shocker that I think they are literally the funniest, coolest, nuttiest coven ever. I am hoping that some of them get their own book in the future. I’m curious to see how they would be as lead.
I enjoyed Cain’s obsession and possessiveness towards Winter. I liked that Cain was protective but not controlling. Did he want to wrap her in bubble wrap and never let her out of his side, yes, but did he ever do that? No. I really enjoyed reading about their relationship developing even more.
I am still curious about Az that hasn’t changed.
Also can we take a moment of silence for that little crossover at the end!!!
I look forward to the many wonderful books Suzanne writes in the future, in the meantime I will just re-read some of already published books💕💕
4.75🌟 What a conclusion to Cain and Wynter’s story!
To be honest, the first half dragged a little but the second half was amazing. What I enjoyed the most was how much Cain and Wynter cared for each other. The relationship progress from first book to this book was beautiful to watch. Saying he was obsessed with Wynter is understatement of the year. Blood rose coven as usual was a hoot. God, i’ll never get over their antics. There were some twists that I didn’t see coming but enjoyed it nevertheless.
Overall if you love Dark in you series, you will enjoy this one too.
P.s that epilogue was so unexpected and I loved it!
Can’t be read as standalone.
I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
“She was so much more than the addiction she’d once been. She was no longer a simple obsession. She was…everything. There would never be any walking away from her.”
The Monsters We Are is the third and final instalment in the adult urban fantasy series, Devil's Cradle. Written in third person POV, the story continues to follow Wynter and Cain as the war between the Ancient and the Aeons looms large with Wynter and her coven in the eye of the hurricane. Revenge is at the center of this conflict and as the stakes rise higher it becomes clear in order to beat Adam Wynter and Cain need something far more powerful than them on their own to stop him...but are the monsters hiding within able to save them or will they unleash something far more dangerous in the process...
I love this gritty world and possessive romance!
Wynter continues to be a kick butt character who refuses to back down. She explores the dark corners of her monster and while she is willing to discuss and listen to her loved ones she will not blindly sit by. Cain is a dark and powerful figure who loves with a brutal coldness that just sticks with you. He wants to hide Wynter away and protect her but he listens and recognizes that he cannot force her to be anything else. I liked learning a bit more about his past and the dynamic he was with his monster is fun!
“...she was vital to him. As necessary as breathing. Something he would never give up.”
In terms of spice, I would place this book at 2 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. They are an established couple already so we see references to spice from the beginning. There is a mix of fade to black and explicit scenes. There is biting, aggression, and dominance in their spice...I mean Cain is a monster. I felt the possessive added ferality to the spice which I love as part of the dynamic. This is a romance built on a powerful connection and the spice reflects this.
The book itself is a bit of a slow moving journey initially but it picks up. Essentially Wynter, Cain, and the others are trying to figure out how to end Adam despite Cain and his comrades being stuck in Devil's Crade. I liked how we get these a balance of action packed scenes (a lot of them centering around people really underestimating Wynter) and also these moments of political intrigue while Cain and his crew plan their next stages against Adam. We get some important reveals that help us understand Wynter's monster and some additional lore around the ancients and leviathans. We still get the fun and camaraderie of Wynter's Coven to shake things up and the final 15% things get CRAZY! I had a lot of fun diving into this and could not put it down! Also, excuse me that epilogue??!?!?
This was a great conclusion to the series! I just wish I had more time with Wynter and Cain after the end!
Thank you Hachette Book Group for this review copy!
I pre-ordered the physical hardback book version of this concluding part of The Devils Cradle series, mainly because I could not justify paying £12.99 for a Kindle version of a book I would never physically own.
This was a satisfying and entertaining conclusion to this short series. I have said before and will reiterate again that I am a huge fan of Suzanne Wright's books, going right back to when she was a self-published author, and this series was in my opinion her strongest with its bastardised use of theological figures from various mythology and religions. Her stories are always easy to read. They are what I would call a 'park your brain at the door' and just go along for the ride comfort read. The formula she generally tends to follow wasn’t as evident in this story, and that threw me at first, but I soon settled into it as it built to its conclusion. There were the inevitable moments of smut but not too much, they enhanced the story rather than carried it and it was the plot which was dominant not the sex, which in my opinion is how it should be. All the outstanding questions were answered, and the seemingly odd epilogue left the door open for further expansion for a new story. (It is interesting to note that the Dark in You series has taken a turn more towards the celestial with her latest book and so it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility for a story to include characters from both series’ of books - after all both Cain and also Knox (the demon from the Dark in You series) both made their first cameo appearances in another series of books Suzanne Wright wrote – the vampiric Deep in your veins series).
If I were to make any criticisms of this story, it would be the coven. I completely understand that they are there for comic relief and to lighten the mood in what was an incredibly dark story. The unhinged friends of the female lead are a staple part of Suzanne Wrights plot formula. However, it did become a bit much at times to have the same silliness repeated over and over, and for me, that did become a little bit irritating. The other would be the moments of peril that led up to the main battle. I am assuming it was deliberate to make these moments pointless to show the futility of them, and to set the scene to show just how powerful and dangerous both Cain and Wynter actually are, but the way they panned out did stray into the realms of predictability and repetitiveness at some points. These criticisms aside, this was still a highly entertaining story, and the end battle produced a number of surprises I didn’t see coming and which I thoroughly enjoyed. The fact I read this book in less than a day and didn’t get much else done after it arrived shows that once again, Suzanne Wright has produced a cracking good read.
The final instalment in what has been a darker and more intense than usual trilogy from Suzanne Wright but one that still delivers everything we’ve come to expect from this prolific author. From feisty, smart mouthed heroines and uber alpha and possessive heroes with sizzling chemistry between them, intrigue-filled plots, lots of secrets just waiting to be revealed and not forgetting a rich vein of sarcastic humour running throughout that will have you snorting back laughter at the deliciously wicked dialogue between the main protagonists
The Monsters We Are has brought to a close a series that was based loosely on biblical mythology and puts this author’s personal spin on what really happened between Cain and Abel and spoiler alert, the villain of the tale might not be who you expect. At the centre of the story was Cain, the de facto leader of Devil’s Cradle and a mysterious heroine in the shape of Wynter Dellavale, a witch who, like Cain, carried an entity within her but hers had it’s own agenda. Her arrival challenged Cain but also fulfilled a need in him, dispelling the boredom that plagued him. She also brought with her a opportunity for Cain and his cohorts to finally escape their prison and take their long-awaited vengeance on their despised captors. With Wynter came the ragtag group of witches she’d gathered along the way creating her own coven or crew depending on who you asked but who had become her family in all but blood. They certainly fought amongst each other enough to be related and brought their own sense of fun and levity to the story. In a gripping storyline with fantastic character dynamics, strong friendships, witty banter, and lots of steamy times, all the secrets surrounding the pair were revealed and justice served.
Suzanne is one of those rare authors I know will not disappoint me and I can’t wait to see what her fertile imagination produces next.
I cannot believe this trilogy has come to an end 😭 I sincerely hope that Suzanne writes other books about the members of the Bloodrose Coven and the other Ancients.
Now, this book. Oh. My. Leviathan! It's sooooo good! It was so full of expertly written character building, character growth, strength, resilience, comedy, and of course, SMUT. I enjoyed getting to read Wynter and Cains relationship grow and to learn more about each of them and the monsters that reside in them. I loved reading all the squabbling between Wynter's coven members. Hattie and her sexual questions never failed to make me snicker. The ending of this book too, wow 🤯 it was so freaking good! It played out really well and I definitely didn't see a few things that happened coming. Like the epilogue which makes me so fucking excited and hopeful! Definitely read this series. It's freaking amazing! As are all of her books though, she is one of my favorite authors so I'm a smidge biased.
I will never not be excited to read a Suzanne Wright book especially when it includes Cain and Wynter.
These books are always such a perfect mix of fantasy, power, feminine rage and SPICE. The plot lacks no detail which I love, it’s dark and yes, it has spice BUT this is never the focus of the story it just happens to be an added bonus.
I enjoyed the new additional characters we got this book and the way they expanded the story. The battle was immense and strategic as always. I know this is a trilogy, but I hope we get some spin off books or novellas.
Also, I’m a little confused by the epilogue. I won’t say why as I don’t want to ruin it, but huh???
Ok I seriously loved this book. The pattern was exactly the same as the other two books. But I LOVE Cain and Wynter. The spice is absolutely top notch.
The one thing I felt could have been better is that the conclusion of the plot was saved until the very end. Everything happened in the last 100 pages. I would have liked more to be spread out through the whole book. I would have liked to have a few more actual engagements between the two sides.
I always love the side character La and I felt they were a little more in it in this one than book two, but still much less than book one. I wanted more of them actually engaging in things. Hattie will always be my favorite.
I was fortunate enough to get to read this as an ARC read, I can not explain how grateful I am!
Suzanne has done it again, I don't know if this is the last book in the world (I hope not), but it was a fitting end months trilogy if so.
It had everything I wanted, I love the bloodrose coven, and wish I could actually be friends with them, each one of them make me belly laugh, as usual, Wynter and Cain were perfect, I FINALLY got answers to all of my questions... Wynters monster is no joke.
I’ve been waiting for this book for an entire year. It did not disappoint, in fact it exceeded my expectations 100%. There were some twists I didn’t see coming but it really worked out. I will read anything Suzanne writes. If you like organic chemistry and a realistic plot, this book is definitely for you. I’m sad to see Wynter and Cain go but I’m hopeful for another series. The epilogue was another thing I did not see coming. Like what!? Go and read!!!!
