This is a Cozy Mystery, and this is the second book in The Beagle Diner Cozy Mysteries series. I have not read the first book in this series, but I did not think that took anything away from my reading enjoyment of this book. The characters in this book were fun to get to know, and the dog was so much fun in this book. I loved the mystery in this book, and I loved guessing what was going on. The town in this book sounds like a cute small town. I really enjoyed reading this book, and the cover of this book is just too cute. I won a Kindle edition of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
All kinds of seemingly unrelated occurrences are happening. Is there something that ties them all together. Dan came to tell Lyra that he found Rob dead in his garage. The authorities were thinking natural causes, but they decided they needed to take another look. With the unexpected death of her friend, ex-celebrity chef Lyra St. Claire and her beagle, Cinnamon, are going to have to look into this because she is sure it was not an accident. Whoever did this must be caught. Of course, Sheriff Walker doesn’t seem to appreciate the “help”. But twists and turns and picking through all of the gossip makes it difficult to move forward. Will Lyra and Cinnamon crack the case?
Family, friendship, drama, mystery, and suspense run through the pages and keep the reader swept up in the story line. Well-developed characters are easy to get to know through their interaction and detailed descriptions. The story is well written, flows smoothly through the pages and keeps your interest from cover to cover.
Lyra has made the decision to sell her restaurant and move back to her hometown of Fairview where she buys her childhood home and the diner where she made many happy childhood memories. She's happily reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Dan is busy fixing up the house and spiffing up the diner. He's bonded with their neighbor, Rob, who is an old friend of Lyra's parent Everything is going great. That is, until someone plays a threatening prank in Lyra's house and Rob drops dead suddenly and the sheriff starts asking questions about what Rob ate, who served it, etc. Did something Rob ate cause his death? Was it a regular old heart attack or something more suspicious. When the sheriff seems to suspect Rob was murdered, he sets his sights on Dan as the murderer! Lyra knows that to be impossible. Her friend would never kill anyone. Rob's estranged son has arrived in town. What if he was in town earlier than he said? What's his alibi? Philip is a much more likely murderer than Dan! The sheriff keeps things close to his vest and won't share with Lyra so she decides she's just going to have to flush out the killer herself!
This is a great mystery! It has a good blend of cozy and mystery and the mystery is really tight. I read the first one awhile ago and while it reveals the name of the murderer and something big that happened, this second book stands alone. I never guessed whodunit! I was thinking it was someone else entirely. I was close but not right. That surprised me right up through the confession. I really thought there would be a last minute twist.
Lyra is likable but she's a little too perfect. Even though she's almost hit rock bottom, some of that was her choice. It is also due to her Pollyanna nature, believing the best in everybody and not seeing when someone is about to take advantage of her or use her. She's a little wiser now after the events of the first book. Lyra's Pollyanna personality makes her a good people person. She is kind, empathetic and intuitive about knowing how to reach people. She's made a good little family at the diner and is working hard to keep things going. She seems happy to be back in her small hometown away from the negative vibes of LA. She misses her buddy Kaden but he's close enough to visit. Lyra is a good sleuth. She takes all her clues to the sheriff and doesn't do anything super dumb. Trying to flush out the killer was dumb but she wasn't alone and that makes a difference. Cinnamon, the Beagle, is absolutely adorable! She's incredibly sweet and understands everything humans say to her. She reacts accordingly and even plays them with a look from her big brown eyes. AWW!! I think she knows who the murderer was and I think someone has been feeding her too much human food, probably at her request. She gets exercise but she needs more regular walks!
Robert McKenna, Lyra's neighbor and old friend of the family, is a jovial soul who knows everyone in town and runs the local garage. He adores cars and fixing them is his passion. He thinks of them in the same way a doctor might think of people. Rob is unfailingly kind to everyone and enjoys telling tales of Lyra's parents when they were young because he knows it makes her feel closer to her late dad. Rob bonds instantly with Dan, his lodger. He recognizes Dan's innate talents and draws them out quietly and subtly. He wants Dan to live his best life and tries to help as if Dan were his son. Rob is curiously quiet about his own history, aside from a late wife. Does he have family? Anyone who might want to kill him for whatever reason? Is there anyone to arrange a funeral? The answer is very sad.
Lyra's assistant Maggie seems a little suspicious to me. Does she actually want to be there? She must be so bored. She's supposed to be working on Lyra's cookbook but ends up helping out at the diner in a pinch. I think she'll move on soon. Except, it seems like she has feelings for Dan. Everyone seems to know it and if he doesn't act on his feelings, she'll go away and he'll lose out. Dan is a wonderful friend. He's been nothing but loyal to Lyra and protective of her. He left LA behind to come to this small town, made a new friend and is growing in confidence day by day. He doesn't appreciate how great he is. He's kind, friendly and helpful. There's no way he's a scheming manipulator. Patricia, Lyra's mom, comes home from a cruise and picks up where she left off with her old friends in the knitting club. She's a good mom who wants her daughter to be happy and wants to be with her daughter with no expectations of anything for herself. She even helps out at the diner when needed.
Poppy is Lyra's waitress at the diner. She's young and insecure. Poppy latched on to Rob as a father figure and now chef Leroy. She appreciates the mentoring and encouragement they give her. Poppy seems like a sweet girl. Her mother, Vanessa, is just AWFUL to her. Vanessa shows no compassion or empathy for her daughter when Rob dies. There's other stuff going on at home that isn't helping Poppy at all. Vanessa is a nosy gossip. She's mean spirited about her gossip too and seems to be in a feud with the other women over which one Rob would have married. Clearly he wasn't that into any of them and was a one woman man. They read too much into his kindness. Vanessa is also one of Maggie's mom's old friends from the knitting club so it's complicated. I would have banned her from the diner when Poppy was working or told her to check her negativity at the door.
Leroy, the cook, is good at his job and enjoys the work. He's also a great mentor to the other two members of the staff. He knows they're young and need help figuring out life. Leroy is a very chill kind of guy. Earl, the dishwasher, apparently has some kind of "learning difficulty" and is grateful for a job. Lyra is kind to him and allows him to learn at his own pace and do what he can to help things run smoothly. He's very sweet.
Philip McKenna is Rob's estranged son. This man has anger management issues and is suspicious of everyone who was friends with his father. He's especially suspicious of Dan. Everyone grieves in their own way but Philip is especially rude to Lyra and her friends. He's inconsiderate of his father and his father's friends, ignoring what would surely be his father's last wishes. No one trusts Philip. I wonder if he's working with the conglomerate that tried to buy up the town? I wonder if he was trying to get his dad to sell his property until Lyra moved in and Dan fixed up the farmhouse and diner. That decision allowed the townspeople more time to stay and draws in more tourists, this depriving the conglomerate of their chance to build a strip mall or whatever. Philip's story is very sad and he is a sad, sorry excuse for a man. He acts like a spoiled child who throws a tantrum every time he doesn't get his own way. My heart breaks for Rob.
Sheriff Walker is a tight-lipped, somewhat arrogant man with some kind of bee in his bonnet. He doesn't like newcomers and is suspicious of Lyra just because she's famous and from LA. He and everyone else, makes assumptions about her without trying to get to know her. He doesn't believe her about the message in the mirror and when Rob dies, he's quick to assume it was an outsider. Yet, Sheriff Walker becomes a more well-rounded character as the story goes on. Sure he's closed-mouthed but he's doing his job. He shouldn't tell a nosy civilian how his investigation is going or who the suspects are. He seems attracted to Lyra though and appreciates her coming to him with clues. She reads too much into him not wanting her to investigate so she won't get hurt. Um yes he's an officer of the law and you're a nosy diner owner. It's on him if you get killed.
Townspeople include Arabelle Finmore, a cranky old lady who comes into the diner every day, complains about the food, is rude to the staff and bickers with Rob. She's one of those types who thinks they can say whatever they want just because they're old. She's not THAT old to have lost her filter. Yet with a hint, Lyra can see through Arabelle and knows how to get through to her. I don't think she killed Rob, at least not on purpose. She's cranky but there's a hint as to the reason why early on in the book and I guessed some of it. Get over it lady! The Knitting Club ladies include Martha Curran, Vanessa Fife (Poppy's mother), June Edmonson and Carrie-Ann. They're all nosy gossips with nothing to do but knit and gossip about everyone. They probably spread rumors too. Carrie-Ann is the biggest gossip of them all and I don't think it was right for Lyra to exploit that. June is a crafter and Esther does the flowers at the church, a point of pride for her. It seems like some of them have more productive hobbies than gossip at least.
I really liked this book and I hope to read more in the future. Hoopla only has the first too. Boo!
Lyra is back in her hometown and running the refurbished diner. Things are going well until a sudden death that looks suspicious. The sheriff seems a bit testy and doesn't seem to take kindly to Lyra's instincts to search out and decipher clues - at least not at first. Lots of clues, several suspects and a few more incidents but Lyra is determined to uncover the truth.
A good who done it with likeable core characters and potential for more interesting adventures in the series.
However, whoever did the proof reading for this book should be fired. I noted 22 typo/errors. Most of them were of an extra or missing words such as - a, the or of - that just didn't fit with the normal cadence of the sentence. There was one place where instead of saying "How are you?", the text said "How you are?". In another spot a character is mentioned as having just left the diner when in fact they hadn't even been in that day. The name Maddie was used at one point but there was no character named Maddie so I'm not sure if the writer meant to write Maggie (who didn't seem to even be in the scene) or Lyra. In the recipe there is something called a "dstspn" but that may or may not have been meant to say a teaspoon. Regardless, that many typos in a book is just NOT acceptable. The errors are distracting and should easily have been caught in a decent proof read.
Had there been only a couple of minor errors, I would have given this book an easy 4 stars but frankly, I can't give this more than 3. Hopefully in the months before the next book in the series is released a more thorough proof read will be done on it. JMO
I really love the little family Lyra's got now that she's moved back to her hometown. It might've been a little crowded with her, Maggie, Dan and now her mom all in the same house, but I loved the relationship Lyra had with them all. She was super close to her mom which was refreshingly nice since I read quite a few books where the main character's mom is just a difficult person, and the dad's usually the nice guy. Which is fine too, but here at least Mom's a nice lady who pitches in to help.
It was interesting to see Lyra and Walker actually becoming a little more friendly to each other. I could tell he was eyeing up Kaden when he'd run down for a visit probably wondering if he had competition lol. I really hope it doesn't turn into one of those dreaded triangle tropes though haha.
I figured out around when Lyra did whodunit. The showdown was a good one, and I liked how everything was explained at the end in great detail. I'll definitely be borrowing Lyra and her crew's next adventure on KU when it comes out!

I had a little trouble getting into this book. There were so many characters and situations that were being mentioned that I felt like I was supposed to know about but didn't. That was when I realized this was the second book in a series and I hadn't read the first. When I got past the setting up phase of the story, I became more engaged and enjoyed taking the ride with the characters. There were red herrings along the way to throw you off track, but I did figure out who did it and had part of the motive as well. Even though I knew who did it, I did have fun seeing how the culprit was found out. Now I have to go back and read the first book to fill in the gaps so I can fully enjoy the future of this series. I recommend this book for a good mystery and a light, clean read.
Beagles Love Steak Secrets is a deliciously twisted mystery. There are so many things happening it could be hard to keep up. Lyra's bathroom is flooded. A friend is dead. Another friend is hurt. Food, especially steak, is missing from the dinner. Are all of these things connected? If so, how? With Lyra dogging the sheriff's steps, I was extremely invested in this book. I love the town the diner and Lyra's extended family! I could not put the book down. Thankfully I started it early so I can now get some sleep!
This is the second book I've read in this series and I found it a pleasant little mystery. Not a lot of high tension or frantic level of action. The plot isn't too challenging but it's but a nice little town with some interesting characters. There's also a bit of romance that makes one wonders what's going to develop there. At the end, there was a recipe that reminds me of one my mother used to make and I think I'll give it a go one night soon. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
a kindly neighbor who ends up dead, as well as someone closer to Lyra who ends up hurt leave a small town worried for their safety
personal connections and betrayals can go back decades, but having grown up in town does not mean Lyra remembers or knew about any number of grown up secrets
lethal lies, alibis and misdirection

Cinnamon's rolls, and specialty steak are the order of the day
Another clever cozy from C.A. Phipps. This time we're treated to a break and enter, a homecoming, a murder, an assault, and unexplained lethargy in everyone's favourite diner mascot Cinnamon.
With a number of clues and intertwined stories running through this book you'll be looking for all of the usual suspects, but nothing is as it seems.
Swing on by and visit the Beagle Diner, pull up a chair and get to know everyone. Small towns have their secrets; what will you discover?
I am looking forward to trying out the included recipe for Cottage Pie.

In Murder She Wrote you have a writer who solves murders and in the Beagle Diner Cozy Mysteries you have a chef/diner owner who does the same. Lyra is on the case but Sheriff Walker isn't pleased. I'm thinking a possible romance might be in the future for Lyra and Walker. Really liked following the clues along with Lyra.
Beagles Love Steak Secrets is another great read by the talented Cheryl Phipps. Bringing back Cinnamon, Lyra, Maggie, Dan, Patricia and even Kadyn in another twist of mystery keeps readers invested in this book. I found it hard to put down - trying to find the culprit responsible for a death, injury and burglary. Recommended
CA Phipps has once again brought us a cozy mystery with Lyra, who just can't seem to get away from drama, and her crime solving beagle, Cinnamon. When Lyra finds herself faced with the murder of a friend, she and her beagle can't seem to help themselves in their efforts to solve the mystery. Plenty of twists and turns as they play who dunit...
I loved book one and dove immediately into book two, drawn in by the title and the beagle. Cinnamon is a great addition to the story. This one did not disappoint, it kept me guessing throughout. Ultimately I figured out who it was, but it was well done in the end.
Beagles Love Steak Secrets is the second book in the Beagle Diner Cozy Mysteries and is an entertaining cozy mystery. This book has humour, murder, mystery, and great characters.

A delightful read! This had enjoyable, well written characters and I loved how well the story moved along. It was the perfect book to read while staying warm inside!
4-4.5🌟 stars This cozy mystery is full of suspects and an irascible small-town sheriff bumps heads with Lyra, the new celebrity owner of the town diner, as murder, property destruction, theft and assault hit close to home for Lyra, her customers and staff. Lyra's beagle Cinnamon is right in the thick of things, pointing Lyra in the right direction as she does her own investigating, but Cinnamon, it seems, has a secret of her own😏 that Lyra needs to decipher.
So many characters gravitate to the diner and keep the suspense going as town residents and visitors draw suspicion. The actual culprit was on my own short list of suspects but the author kept me wondering about the motive right through the book.
I really like a cozy mystery that keeps me guessing and confused by the twists and red herrings. This one hit the mark and was also enjoyable thanks to the array of characters, gossips and all.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
I truly enjoyed the 3 book series. It was my entertainment over the Memorial Day weekend. The characters are well developed and some are pretty outrageous. It was a nice change in the story line to go from famous to hometown friendly. The crimes and criminals were different. The endings were a surprise.
Lyra is a strong female chef who has given up a dream restaurant to move back to her hometown. There she and her team are workouts renovate a diner and her childhood home. Unfortunately someone wants to disrupt her plans. This someone is quite adept at hiding their identity and this much of the small town is under suspicion. Great characters and an interesting plot.
