One Winter's Kiss: A Beautiful Nightmare Story

Rate this book
She Warmed His Heart. He Cooled Her Soul. All with one kiss.

Winter
Whatever life I have, is already planned for me. My future. My heart. Every detail has been meticulously sculpted on my behalf, without my input. Dutiful to a fault, I walked the path chosen for me without a question or whimper.

Until I saw him. His golden eyes. His perfect smile. Everything about this man changes my trajectory in ways I could never imagine. And although my wits tell me to stay my course, my sails are set high and my boughs are breaking, no longing for just one kiss!

Lux
Love. The one thing I've long avoided has finally gripped my heart.. Never have I given much thought to the notion of love or a mate I could call my own. Until now. This girl—no—this woman. She perplexes me. My every thought is of her and she is driving me insane. How a mere mortal can cause such deep yearning, I'll never know. Her eyes. Her laugh. Her smile—and yes, her lips! Her kiss would ruin a wretched soul such as I—but I don't care. I'd wreck the entirety of my world for just one kiss!

One Winter's Kiss is a standalone Beautiful Nightmare Story. This Christmas get lost in the grandeur of Elysian Manor. It's Elysian Manor's turn to host the Supernatural Regency for their annual cotillion. The one time of year where a faction of human nobles, vampires, wolves and more collide to share in one common goal, civility. But that goal of civility will be tested when the forbidden love of a dutiful daughter and a hybrid wolf reveals a new and dangerous threat.

Wife of one. Mom of three plus a Beagle.

Well, at least that's how I'm described in the confines of my everyday life.

Writing has always been second nature to me. I spent my childhood creating short stories and my collegiate years writing for the campus paper (Go TERPS!) Jump twenty years to the present--I'm still writing. At my day job I spend most of my time writing capability briefs, white papers, proposals--you name it.

Then one day it hit me. It was time to access my own creative power and bring to life the characters lurking in my mind.

I hope you enjoy my first book, Beautiful Nightmare. It has everything you'd look to find in a paranormal romance-urban fantasy-new age novel. Vampires. Wolves. Love. And so much more!

"Now I intend to be her first of many. And her only."

This was a sweet quick read with instant love. Winter and Lux at first glance fall in love. The book was good with a bit of drama. I enjoyed reading it, i do wish it were longer.

This is sweet insta-love romance and it’s an enjoyable read.

But….

Why is there always a but?

I’m a picky reader. Let me just put that out there first. Anyway I liked this the problem was I really wanted to like it more.

I feel mean saying this it just felt more like a draft than the finished article. I know it’s a short story but some of the characters felt a little flat and Lord Elysian’s behaviour seemed positively bizarre at times.
I just felt it needed tightening up. More padding in places, just a little TLC.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

Review:
This book had me hooked at the beginning of the prologue and it kept my attention the entire time! This book is an insta-love so the story moves fast! If I could sum up the relationship between hybrid Lux and mortal Winter, it would be sexual tension. From their first encounter in the lumberyard, they oozed sexual tension and instant love. Lux was the first man that ever made Winter want to throw caution to the wind and mount her first “horse”! And I was here for all her bad decisions because you could tell from the moment Lux laid eyes on Winter, he would put the world at her feet just to see her smile. Their love story plays out with many twists and turns and oh sh*t moments, but they make it through in the end!

Winter:
Smart, witty, and takes nothing from anyone, yea that’s Winter all right. If you love a strong female lead, you’ve found the right book. I love the fact that she is strong willed all while maintaining her feminine soft side and remaining a hopeless romantic. All throughout the book, Winter stayed true to her heart and didn’t waver on making her dreams come true in her romantic life as well as her hopes and dreams outside of any man.

Lux:
Baaaaaaaaby!!!!! Lux is my new boyfriend/baby daddy!! The way this man can take control of your body and make you feel safe and loved in the process is beautiful. He is possessive, jealous, caring, and insatiable. The fact that he’s a hybrid, half vampire and werewolf, doesn’t make it any better. His inner wolf makes him an instant hot head over his mate, and he will stop at nothing to make Winter his.

Tropes:
- Supernatural
- Insta-love
- Age Gap

DNF at 20%.

I’ll be honest, I picked this one up because it’s a gorgeous Black woman on the cover of a paranormal romance…yes please.

Unfortunately, this one didn’t work for me. While I do enjoy Instalove story lines, I’m not a fan of the aggressive male claiming/be possessive over virgin women.

The writing felt clunky, and I just want sold on this instant attraction between Lux and Winter, especially since Winter literally was running from a marriage proposal before stumbling into Lux’s arms.

The story may get better from here, but this is a no from me.

If you are in the mood for a fast paced steamy romance with werewolves, vampires, and other mystical creatures, this fantasy novel is for you! In One Winter’s Kiss, true love between a mortal and werewolf is put to the ultimate test and in order for it to last, family dynamics must shift and curses must be broken! Although the pacing of this novel was very fast, the tempo kept me invested and needing to know what happens next. The incorporation of racial and sexual orientation diversity made this an inclusive work of art that more genres should take heed to.

Thanks to cocoa chapters and L.C. Son for the book and review opportunity.

One winter's kiss is a spicy forbidden love story that takes place at Elysian Manor. This is my first LC Son book, I enjoyed the characters. It was an exploration into love at first sight between Winter Elysian and a half vampire/half wolf named Luxor Decanter. I felt that winter's parents were judgmental on their daughter and brought up the past entirely too much. It was a good sense of pacing. Each chapter alternated between Lux 's and Winter's point of view. A little family drama in the middle. One Winter's Kiss is a beautiful story of two opposite individuals brought together to complete each other’s life.

Such a seductive and saucy story for the winter season! This tale, which lies between the realm of fantasy and romance, is an exploration into love at first sight between Winter Elysian (the strong female lead) and Luxor Decanter (a half vampire/half wolf).

The story overall is one that captivated my interest. I mean, how could anyone not enjoy a good fantastical romance?! However, I am not a big fan of the "love at first glance" trope - even in fantasy. I liked the author's writing style and the uniqueness of the characters (I always love a headstrong female lead!), but every time Winter or Lux talked about being "in love" or willing to "sacrifice it all" for someone they only knew for a day, my thoughts kind of drifted. I guess I'm too much of a realist and not romantic enough to fall for such a notion.

Aside from that, however, I would read this author's other works happily. She crafts a good story and has a nice sense of pacing. I really also liked that each chapter alternated between Winter and Lux's point-of-view. One thing to note, though - there are some steamy scenes. Be warned, if you're shy....but, if it doesn't bother you...enjoy!

One Winter's Kiss: A Beautiful Nightmare Story - L.C. Son

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

::: SPOILER-FREE REVIEW :::

Rating: 4 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is actually the first book that I read by L.C. Son. Since I am a fairytale and shifters’ romance junky, I simply could not resist this book cover.

I loved this book! I wish it was longer... it was over far to quick for me.

Totally smitten H! All in from the first time he saw the h. Absolutely little to no drama. I loved both of the characters and thought they were sweet together. Also- the steamy times were fabulous!

Surprisingly what I liked most is the insta-Love/lust . I am not a fan of it normally, but I think the holiday setting provided the perfect setting. It was clear from the first time Lux and Winter met that they were instantly attracted to each other.

I had fun with this one. It was a quick read with just the right amount of heat. The fantasy element was also well done.

And the side characters... I LOVED Ross and Abigail and I NEED to know what happens between Kharon and Rae. 🤭🤭

L.C. Son get us their story ASAP! Pretty pleaaaase!

One Winter's Kiss is an adorable story of two opposite individuals brought together to complete each other’s life. The cute little novella is a good way to add some festive cheer into your readings.

Highly recommend!

This is a lighter, fun insta-love romance from LC Son. Winter is in a terrible predicament due to her station. Her parents insist that she is poised, the good girl, and do as she’s told. But she wants more out of life. She doesn’t want to marry someone older than her that creeps her out, she wants to live her life. And so this story begins with a yearning to live, and a chance crossing with someone else that will change her life.

I loved the paranormal aspects that elevates this story from the typical insta-love novels, and the reminder that LC Son threads into her books that lack of knowledge tends to be dangerous, as it leads to misunderstandings. The twist at the end was so good too!

When I read the blurb and saw the cover for One Winter’s Kiss, I wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. This is an insta-love, BIPOC, age-gap, paranormal romance set in a fictional world where vampires, wolves, humans, and other supernatural beings reside.

This book is fast-paced and a majority of the story takes place in one day. I found the beginning of this book a little confusing, but after I was about 25-30% in I was invested in Winter and Lux’s love story and wanted to see it to the end.

I’m intrigued by this world and curious to read about the other characters and their stories set in the Beautiful Nightmare world.

This was an enjoyable read, and I really loved Winter and Lux. The elements of this story were very intriguing from the paranormal aspect to a gathering of humans and paranormal factions in an act to be civil to the threat revealed in light of a forbidden romance occuring between a human and a werewolf hybrid. There is also a wonderful Christmas vibe within this story that I really loved seeing included.

The romance between Winter and Lux was written so well, and I really liked how there was a forbidden element to it with them being of different factions. Even with it being an insta-love type of romance it still came together really well. Thank you NetGalley for an arc of this book.

✨️Honestly, if I could give this book more stars, I would😫. Especially when we got to chapter 32👀.
I love the short chapters, but my only complaint is that Lux stayed true to his word, and we didn't get to the spice until later in the book. 😫😂 Lux is bae and has such a strong will, and I love the insta love that happens between Winter and himself.
I just wish the story didn't end. I'm in need of more Lux & Winter❄️ Like I wish we could have more😭 I can totally see myself rereading this one day.

✨️Now about the "bad guy" Kharon of the story. When he was first introduced, I didn't like him, LOL. Then, with Winter's father intent on him marrying her, I REALLY didn't like him. I kept thinking he was going to come back and do something but then he disappeared and it kinda bothered me that Rae still wanted him even after learning what he did🤦🏾‍♀️ but we can't help who we love. I look forward to the Fire Duet in which we explore Rae & Kharon's relationship.

✨️I love Winter's cousin Ross. You always need a funny "lighting the mood" or say something that everyone is thinking, but WON'T say character lol he's hilarious!

✨️Overall, I really enjoyed this fast-paced fantasy filled story.

ARC from NetGalley

So this is bad, like teen fanfic bad, no offense to fanfic people, and I've never actually read fanfic, but I imagine it to be like this. I don't even care about the instalove. The instalove isn't what makes this bad. The plot isn't even really bad. I mean, it isn't good, but I actually finished it. I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to finish it after I read the first page of the prologue because the writing is fucking abysmal. It didn't take me long to stop bookmarking all the parts with cringey shit to quote, because it was like almost every page. At any rate, here are some gems:

“Tightening my already closed eyes, I dare not open them for fear once I see the glow of his sun-spun eyes deepen into my own, I’ll be completely lost to his lure.” Interesting sentence structure. I'm also intrigued at this deepening glow.

"Oh, Elysian, Win, if only you understood what you've done. I wanted to do this the easy, less painful way but now you've forced my hand. And now..." Let me introduce you to the comma.

"Despite the blazing fire from the oversized hearth fireplace" The hearth is part of the fireplace. There is no hearth fireplace. That's like saying the... chassis car? the um paw dog? It's a part of the fireplace. It's also a standalone word that could mean fireplace. So it's also like saying the fireplace fireplace.

'"My lords!" A loud shout from outside the terrace doors, yanks us back to the moment' Let us not get started on the amount of exclamation points in this book (there are 3 in this 11 on this page alone) and simply focus on the loud shout.

"I could care less how the spillage is likely making a dark trail of mascara run down to my chin." LADIES AND GENTS, SHE COULD CARE LESS.

"Now let us raise our glasses high in thankfulness of the return of the beloved [so-and-so's] return!" A yes the return of the beloved person's return.
To everything, return, return, return.
There is a season, return, return, return.
And a time to every purpose.
Under heaven.

What is with these people and the panting? So much panting.

"There is no where I'd rather be." No where.

There is also a lot of Lux inhaling her wholly. Do people do that? Do you just get right up in the crotch and just take a big deep breath because crotch is such a good smell? Does anyone do this? Even a spanking clean crotch has an innate crotchiness that I personally am not terribly interested in huffing. I am reminded of goat cheese, though I imagine far more people like goat cheese than they do crotch huffing. It just has this inescapable goatiness that I really hate. At any rate, this author is not the only one guilty of inserting excessive crotch huffing. People, stop it. No one wants to smell the musk. Or is it just me?

"Massaging up and down, he grunted, as I needed both of my hands to accommodate his erection." Right.

And.. Luxor Decanter? I cannot get the vision of a tacky Vegas-style Egyptian booze carafe out of my mind.

"Her life is now my life. Her body mine as mine is now hers. Between us there is only co-mission." Is this supposed to be like instead of submission? I don't think that's a word. "My devotion to her is just as submissive as I'll ever ask of her." Like I kind of get what you're trying to say, but ugh.

There is mention of lot of boners throughout, but they don't actually fuck until the end because VIRGIN IMPORTANCE. The sexy bits are really flowery and purple, though there is a bit in there which alludes to a dog knot if you're into that.

I'll leave you with this deep bit of depth:
"I am her protector. Her guardian. I protect what I love because I love to protect. And I protect what is mine."

Some stories pull you in from the very first page others take a little longer. One Winter Kiss was something different. First of all the cover was perfect, giving me an idea of Winter as the heroine. Winter’s life is filled with sadness, being groomed for the family business and running from Kharon Nix. Kharon is suppose to be the villain but there was not enough of him there to feel his evil. Her insta-love interest is Luxor, who prefers Lux because of his name being an entertainment venue elsewhere, acts immature at times for his age. One minute he’s showing control denying his sexual needs with Winter but then later he shows up poorly dressed with uncontrolled attitude to meet the father of the woman he wishes to marry. For the most part we are either seeing things from Winter or Luxor perspective limiting our knowledge of what is happening around them. Information about Rae and Kharon is so glossed over that as to be unimportant. I like the idea of different paranormal types and the hybrids having the ability to choose what they wish to be, Vampire or Werewolf. I also like Luxor explaining the different types of beings in his world and the ignorance of humans about their existence. Overall not a bad quick read.

A big thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for letting me read this book. Sadly it contains instant love which is something I don’t really care for. The bright, hard working heroine is doing all she can to replace her late brother in her parents eyes but honestly her parents, particularly her father here display bizarre behaviour and actually treat her like a recalcitrant child ! I just didn’t get that they could give her so much responsibility and yet just want to ride roughshod over her when it suited them.
This brings me to the crux of the story and the big, bad who oddly just seemed to fade into the background after the final confrontation. I did like that Lux is prepared to face untold horrors in order to win Winter but actually would have liked more descriptions of what he actually faced. I think that’s probably why I am not rating this higher because as much as it’s an interesting book I feel at times certain things could have been made more vivid in the readers mind. This is a romance and technically starts as it means to go on but unfortunately wasn’t the perfect choice for me.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was well written and thought out. A delightful story that has great characters. If I had ANY downsides it would be the villain of the story needing more attn to what occurs and their part in it. Aside from this got so enraptured by this love story. Love at first this intense is unreal but satisfying to read. I would love to see this on my tv screen! I know the way it ended would make difficult to continue a love story b/c it’s so final BUT I’m not disappointed at ALL. From the beginning you’re pulled in and want to know just where this is going.

Lux is that dude. I instantly fell for the character. He’s a protector and knows what he wants.

Winter was so pure and open. I wish she wasn’t such a pushover in certain times but I blame that on her love of family.

Ross is my homey. I would love to see something with h and Stephen! Maybe a story of him leading up to meeting Stephen because they’re so cute I want them forever.

Rae I really wanna know more about her and how she truly feels. Not just the façade she puts up.

The parents now that one …idk lol

Thank you so much for my ARC and allowing to give this honest review.

Beautiful book!

One Winter's Kiss: A Beautiful Nightmare Story is one of my top insta-love novels! I have to admit that first I was hooked by the book cover - beautiful one!
Winter and Lux met at the Supernatural Regency annual cotillion, and it was all - they realized they would stop at nothing to be together. But there is one obstacle - everything was against their love.
I was fascinated by how the author described Winter because she has everything a woman needs- she is a smart, romantic, independent, strong woman. On the other side, Lux is possessive and jealous, and on top of that, he is half-vampire and werewolf, which puts more tension on their love.
But he really falls for Winter, and he is ready to lay the world under her feet to make her happy. However, on the other hand, he is a captivating character, because he can be a protective, caring, and confident man, which is an appealing feature.
The fast-paced plot was just a delightful experience. The author's writing style is engaging and gripping. I couldn't help but read until I got to the end! Intriguing sweet story!

LC Son has truly written a beautiful nightmare love story.
Winter, young, spry, waiting for her fairytale love. Lux, strong, a beast of a man, never thought such could exist.
A chance meeting and their worlds collide: abrupt and beautifully. Even though her father had other plans, theirs was a fairytale with some “spice”!
Dreams came true, love meanders on; no curse could ever keep them apart.
I will definitely have to read the Beautiful Nightmare series in its entirety. I need to know about Rae, Kharon, Ross, and Stephen.
Short , spicy, well written.
Fantasy true love and beasts. If they interest you, pick this one up and give it a spin.

The author writes wonderful stories that are all in the Beautiful Nightmare world! This is Winter's and Lux's story of their love at first sight and family. There are surprises, have to have some, and I love how the author can make you feel like you're there in the pages, she's that descriptive. And throughout the story you have the ahhh okay moments and you have to love where she's going. If you haven't started these books yet you must, you won't be sorry!

Insta-love, interracial romance, told from dual point of view. The cover is absolutely lovely.
Winter is loyal, dutiful and kind, however she is filled with a quiet discontent yearning for more than her future holds. Luxor dedicated , strong and impulsive isn't looking for love. However he is willing to challenge and sacrifice for Winter. Their newfound love is impacted by hurdles, danger and duty.
The story ends in an HEA, while laying the groundwork for further stories featuring members of Winter's family.

I enjoyed my first paranormal read by author L.C. Son. The story from my perspective is solid and the characters are well-developed. The only issue I have with this story is Winter’s cousin, Rae. The hero of this story Luxor Decanter almost missed his date with destiny. Winter has had to take over her father's manor affairs since her brother's death. Winter would have never imagined it would lead her to meet her future. Luxor will do everything to be with Winter even if it means sacrificing himself.

I received an advance reader copy of this book from the author. This review is purely from my perspective, and all opinions are my own. I am under no obligation to review the book.

I am a huge fan of L.C. Son’s work. I absolutely love her Beautiful Nightmare series. I’ve read every story in it and I can’t wait for the next installment! (Luckily for me, I am reviewing it this month so it’s waiting in my Kindle for me!)

This was such a good love story. It was sweet and spicy, just like any good love story should be. Even so, this was about more than just an instant love with its happily-ever-after.

There is a dark undercurrent. We don’t find out what’s really going on till that last part of the book. It was a good twist that my fantasy-loving heart needed. (I can’t wait to read more of that story.) Of course it all comes to a satisfying and heartwarming end.

There is also a struggle, it seems, between the creature races and the humans. They come together every year for the Christmas cotillion and there is peace. But you can feel the strain of relationships between them all, like their peace is a very fragile thing. I like how Winter’s family finds a way to overcome that fragility and see things a little differently, even if there is still much to learn.

This book is spicy! But it’s part of the story. It’s not just thrown in because that’s what is popular now. It belongs here and is genuine. I love this part of Winter and Lux’s story. Young, passionate, sweet, and hot. Just what it should be!

I like all the characters. The parents who may be demanding but truly only want what’s best for their daughter. The cousins that are more like siblings. The mysterious man with whom the father has made a marriage arrangement for Winter. Winter, a dutiful daughter but also strong and determined to have the life she dreams of for herself. And, Lux, out for a run and has a chance meeting that completely changes his life.

This book is so good! I gave it all the stars and highly recommend it to fans of fantasy romance, paranormal romance, instant love, vampire stories, and spicy romance. If you haven’t started this series, you really are missing out.

I was gifted with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I am always intrigued when I get to scope out a fresh and unique version of a paranormal universe. We get to meet vampires, wolves, and hybrids of the two species. Exciting! One Winter's Kiss: A Beautiful Nightmare Story by L. C. Son immediately captivates the senses and attention with her gently passionate narrative. Winter is preparing for the annual cotillion for the Supernatural Regency. She is being courted by her father’s choice for her hand but does not find Kharon Nix at all appealing. When she meets Lux, a hybrid vampire/wolf, they immediately realize that they belong together. Love and Lust collide instantly. However, her other suitor stands in the way and her father is less than happy with the thought of his very human daughter being involved with a supernatural. Will Lux and Winter only have the memory of just that one kiss to keep them warm? I loved this story and Lux and Winter were very appealing. I would have liked to have more insight in what happened to our villain, Kharon Nix.

With all of the magical, fantasy, and paranormal elements involved, I was expecting more and I think was planning on a saucier romance for sure.
This is an insta-love story that at times seems light and airy and at other times seems slow and heavy.
The reason I am doing 4 stars instead of 3 is because the idea is there and I think future novels with the elements from within this story will be epic.
