Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose – An Inspiring Parenting Story: Raising Gifted Children, Overcoming Challenges, and Finding Strength in God

Rate this book
Sonya Curry chronicles the never-before-shared story of raising her children and her lifelong devotion to education, family, and faith. Sonya Curry’s journey, like those of her extraordinary sons and daughter, was filled with defeats and hard-fought victories, but hers took place out of the limelight, without the eyes of the world watching, cheering, or drawing inspiration from her example. Until now. In this inspiring memoir, Sonya tells her story for the first time, beginning with her childhood in rural Virginia and moving through the peaks and valleys of an incredible life—from raising her immensely gifted but sometimes headstrong children, to becoming an educator and founding a Montessori school, to discovering a profound, life sustaining connection to God and faith. Fierce Love is a wise and illuminating story of family, faith, and purpose. With something for everyone—seekers, sports fans, people of faith, lovers of memoir— it’s one strong mother’s gift to all who wonder how, where, and whether they’ll find the strength.

Fierce Love is a meaningful memoir that you won't be able to put down. Sonya Curry writes with honesty, purpose, and grace.

I am a huge basketball fan and know of the Curry family. To be honest, I didn't know too much about Sonya before reading her memoir, but I am so glad that I got to understand her by reading this book.

From the very first chapters, you see how special Sonya is. Even though she didn't have the money and fame at a young age, she had spirit. I'm not talking about spirit in the sense of a cheerleader, I am talking about spirit in wanting to change and make a change so that everyone can succeed.

When she was a little girl she wanted to help and educate the other kids that lived in her trailer park. Her detail of teaching a boy to read really touched my heart. And as chapters go by you see her heart. Family and faith are two of the most important factors in her life. She uses the wisdom from her badass mother Candy and God to help her navigate her life and that of her family.

It's so unique and rewarding for Sonya to start from her childhood to young adulthood, to the present. To see her growth is inspiring. And when she is in her college days at Virginia Tech she begins to put that wisdom to the test. She decides to leave a relationship that is not right for her and ends up meeting Dell Curry. When they learn she is pregnant, they make a decision that is the start of their family.

Although becoming a mother is a beautiful journey for Sonya, she knows her purpose is more than this. That is when she decides to go back to school and finish her degree. I love her passion for educating and I am so glad to know that she trusted herself to make the decision. You can't help but be inspired by her drive, compassion, and tenacity.

I give Fierce Love 5 stars. I think this memoir is so wonderful because it allows readers to see her as Sonya and not just Sonya Curry. It is really such a powerful memoir that I thoroughly enjoyed. Through all her ups and downs, her faith and love of her family keeps her going.

Fierce Love: A Memoir if Family, Faith, and Purpose by Sonya Curry is a mellow, easy flowing read that spoke directly to the mother in me.

There’s no drastic, over the top moments in this book. Instead, this is a heartfelt, faith based read. It’s the kind of book you read when you want to chill. It’s a, make yourself a cup of tea, kick your feet up and enjoy, kind of book. If you’re looking for a drama filled narrative, you won’t find it here.

This is a memoir about Sonya, not her children or her ex-husband. Although she does talk about her NBA superstar sons, as well as her daughter, it’s only to help the reader get a clear understanding of her parenting style and how she handled various parental situations. I appreciate her telling her story without the over saturation of her children’s stories. After all, she is a woman with her own story, her own purpose, and her own identity.

The writing style is simplistic which makes it a very easy read.

My favorite chapter is “The Art of Living”, Chapter 24. It’s final chapter, in it Sonya is alone. Her children are grown and have made new lives for themselves. Now, she is left to find a new purpose. She writes, “I want to discover who else I can be. I don’t want to be defined only by my kids or by my marriage”. To get clarity, Sonya unintentionally goes to a no speaking spa, eats only vegan food and meditates. This is not a fancy, upscale spa. The food is served cafeteria style and her bedroom has the bare minimum. But it is here she embraces her new journey in life.

This was a very resonating read. Having gone through these same stages in life, I was able to appreciate Sonya’s vulnerability.

Thank you Bibliolifestyle and HarperOne Books for gifting me this memoir. I enjoyed the journey.

Loved this. I don’t even follow NBA. I’m not that into sports although I do appreciate my husband watching Pat McAfee’s show. I wish I did follow sports more because I know I would love the sports politics of it. Anyway, point is: not a sport person. But I am a family person. I am a person with non negotiable standards. I am very religious and faith focused. I am, you might say a difficult person. All these qualities Sonya has. She values family, hard work, and education. I was head over heels when I learned she started a Montessori school. I homeschool my kids and while we haven’t done Montessori I am familiar with the philosophy and love it.

I particularly loved one anecdote about how Steph (I think, could’ve been Seth) didn’t do the dishes. And because of that he now had to miss practice. The coach calls and Sonya and him spar back and forth. She’s not budging. Family rule: so household chores or no sports practice. You can just feel the coach’s frustration but I loved this story. Expectations, rule, consequences. I’ve never considered myself a rules person but I was applauding Sonya the whole time through this book.

Picked it up at the library from a “new books” display. Easy read. Sonya Curry is a tiger mom. Fiercely defensive of her kids. Fiercely encouraging to her kids. I wouldn’t want to mess with her or get on her wrong side!! My favourite parts of the book were hearing about Stephen having to change his shot - it was tough work but he was determined. Great story. Read that part and some others about natural consequences to my kids. They also enjoyed. Reading and sharing it while GS is in the finals was timely. I think some of her theology may be a little off… or just written in words that make me concerned: “your truth” and her visions and dreams were given a lot of weight, but she definitely loves the Lord, and her children. The book was about her, but I was a little discouraged to not hear more of her marriage and they’re relationship… but it seems they are in the midst of a separation so maybe that makes sense to leave him out.
Recommended for Christian sports moms. 3.5 stars.

This is the most poorly written memoir I have ever read. Shouldn’t have finished.
