Playing with Monsters #2

Sleeping with Monsters

Rate this book
Length: 14 hrs and 7 mins

When everything is on the line, how far will you go to protect those you love?

What if the cost of saving them is your soul?

Would you pay it?

I thought I was prepared for what was coming; that if I made sacrifices, I could win this game.

I’m no longer afraid of the darkness or the monsters that hide in the shadows. I’ve become what I feared most, allowing it in to protect those I loved.

Sometimes it takes a monster to win. Sometimes to fight monsters, you have to become one. My only fear is....can I come back from it?

Warning: Intended for listeners 18 and older.

About the hero: Chances are you may not fall instantly in love with him, that’s because I don’t write men you instantly love; you grow to love them. I don’t believe in instant love. I write flawed, raw, caveman-like assholes who eventually let you see their redeeming qualities. They are aggressive, assholes, and one step above a caveman when we meet them. You may not even like him by the time you finish this audiobook, but I promise you will love him by the end of this series.

About the heroine: There is a chance that you might think she’s a bit naïve, or weak, but then again who starts out as a badass?

Badasses are a product of growth and I am going to put her through hell, and you get to watch her come up swinging every time I knock her on her ass. That’s just how I do things. How she reacts to the set of circumstances she is put through may not be how you, as the listener, or I, as the author, would react to that same situation. Everyone reacts differently to circumstances and how Magdalena responds to her challenges is how I see her as a character and as a person. I don’t write love stories: I write fast-paced, knock you down, make you sit on the edge of your seat wondering what happens next books. If you’re looking for cookie-cutter romance, this isn’t for you. If you can’t handle the ride, unbuckle your seat belt and get out of the roller-coaster car now. If not, you’ve been warned. If nothing outlined above bothers you, carry on and enjoy the ride!

WTF did I just read? I have been crying for a solid hour. That is by no means an exaggeration. A SOLID. HOUR. I'll be back to write my review once I can see through the swollen slits of my eyes. Gah, I need Manny and more Moscato. Shit, why is today only Thursday?

*sigh* This review is hard to write. See my above notation, that I am not deleting... because it is so true. I look at the above paragraph and have to swallow down over the lump that rises in my throat. The feels... yeah. They were fully engaged in the story of Lena/Kendra and Lucian... as well as the rest of the gang who joined in the party... a little Spyder who sat down... beside her? *giggle* mmm, yummy. Anyway, I digress. In my opinion... and remember folks, this is just one reader's opinion... it must be so hard to write a paranormal story. I mean I know how hard it is to write period, (take this review for example, LOL!)... but then to exponentially ramp it up by making it a fantastical world on top of it... crazy hard, right?

I loved Playing With Monsters so much... and I had such crazy high expectations for Sleeping With Monsters. Did I enjoy this book? Yes, absolutely. However, there was some noticeable editing/proofing issues. Little plot threads that just kind of pop up and then fizzle and are never mentioned again... It seemed to get a little convoluted and we're not even going to discuss the ending. I haven't recovered. I may never recover. Alas... I still can't argue that I was transfixed. I was held hostage to Ms. Hutchins words... to the world that she built.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

love is giving yourself to someone and discovering they're flawed, but you love them anyway, because you make them a better person. ...

Your love, though, your love cannot be forced or taken; it's given, because no matter how much time has passed, you are mine. Your love is the purest thing you have, and when you give it, you move mountains to protect it.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

People are what they've endured. Pain we survive is what defines us.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Deep right???

So even though I had some issues, and I've sat on writing this review for a couple days while my battered heart tried to come around a bit...this book was a monster. And I willing Slept on it and with it...and I'll read it again, I'm sure of it. And I'll read the next book in the series, which we've been assured there is more to come. Although with that ending, I'm not sure how. 4 stars.

"So what if we fuck like we are going to war?"
description

Sleeping with Monsters is the second book in the Playing with Monsters Series. Lucian and Lena are back and life and death are on the line. Lucian's desire to keep Lena is distracting him from his purpose and Lena is desperate to help her family and not allow Lucian to pull her away. With the war of good and evil raging all around them, the stakes are high for these two to survive.

description
"I could have loved you."
Told in multiple POV, Sleeping with Monsters is another action-packed read full of passion and steam. Although the plot continues to become more complex, the dynamics between Lucian and Lena continue to heat up. The Playing with Monsters world is complex with a twisted plot and an outstanding cast of characters.
"Congratulations, you destroyed me."
Overall, Sleeping with Monsters will appeal to any and all paranormal romance fans. Be forewarned, this ending truly took my breath away. I was so happy that the third book was already locked and loaded on my Kindle! This is one series I do not want to stop.

SPOILERS BELOW ⬇️

Book 2 starts off little while after book 1's cliffhanger. Lena's memories have been erased and she is living as her twin sister Kendra who was taken by Lucifer in the last book. Lucian has kept his distance, but Lena knows something is up as she can sense her memories have been altered and manipulated but cannot pinpoint WHO or WHY

She senses her life is not as it seems, there are plot holes in her mind. Nothing is adding up and she is urgently trying to find the reasons, but nothing is coming to her but slowly she is able to remember bits and pieces but relates it to dreams/nightmares.

OM Drama:She does have a scene where she is with Lucian, and she sees him at his club and they have sex but at the moment she truly believes its him but it turns out it's Lucifer who entered her dreams and slept with her as he posed as Lucian and since she does not remember her being ''Lena'' she could not tell the difference. This however does not go well with Lucian, and he is forced to bond her to himself/Spyder and some of his men.
She also gives Spyder a peck in front of Lucian since she is pissed at him and again Lucian is OTT about it.

Partial sharing:While the ritual to get her bonded to himself and the rest, they have to touch her, bite and kiss her. This is as far as it goes, and it's all done via magic. Lucian is the only one who she sleeps with, and he is NOT happy about having to do this, but he needs to in order to protect her against Lucifer. As claiming her like this will stop him (hopefully).

While she believes she is Kendra her grandma tells her to go get a witch who has sent a distress signal and she is tasked to do so with Spyder but we end up (the reader knows) that the apartment they go to is her old apartment while she was away from her coven and they end up at a club where it seems fishy - Lucifer is there but she is able to save the witch and get out, not realizing they were in HELL and they left it. Again, causing Lucian to have a brain aneurysm lol

We also find out that the witch she saved was glamoured to look like someone else but in reality, it is her sister Kendra. Thankfully Lena is finally able to remember everything and knows what has happened, but she also has other bits missing.

She is hearing voices of all the witches Lucian had to hunt through the centuries and this is causing her to put more pieces together behind the scenes.

Once she has her memories and is able to tell Lucian she remembers he explains that his intentions were to protect her and keep her safe and despite her initial anger she knows he meant well, and it wasn't meant to hurt her, but it feels like he undermined her which results in her pain. She also confesses she loves him after a night of love making (different from what they had done previously) and he reacts badly and leaves, leaving her alone and hurt beyond measure.

This causes a ripple effect for her decisions and what life has in store for her.

I knew at this point what would happen as this was my third reread but I am never prepared for the pain that the last part of this book brings you.

A few things occur so here is the list:
1) Lucifer has come to the mortal realm via an opening and hell gates are open, allowing demons to roam and kill people which is causing havoc.
2) Kendra is not herself at all in this book and she is pregnant with Lucifer's baby after her time with him in Hell.
3) We find out Kendra is actually possessed by the original Katarina
4) Lena is pregnant with Lucian's baby (we find out it was possible but Katarina needed to be the right time amongst other things)
5) The baby now holds the seal and is already filled with darkness, Katarina is now happy as she knows that Lucian must kill his own son to save the world
6) Lena is a clone of Kendra just like Joshua and Benjamin (they were the first set of twins Katarina experimented with to make sure it worked).

Katarina reveals she outplayed Lucian and did something behind his back the last time she was reincarnated. She made a deal with Lucifer and was able to create two separate eggs while Lena's mother was pregnant and had them both have each half of her soul, one half loves Lucian and is the dark seed while the other is the one who has no care and is pure. These two halves can be made whole once the other twin kills the other which is what she is planning on doing.

There is a lot more to this but it's a bit complicated to explain so I advise everyone to read it carefully to understand the loopholes Katarina allows which she did not seem to think things over lol

During this entire moment Lucifer and Katarina basically beat up Lena to a pulp and she can barely stand let alone move but she is able to kill herself and eliminate Lucian having to kill their son, her soul would be destroyed ruining the curse and never having Katarina be able to reincarnate again ending the game.

We also find out from her grandmother that she knew she would die as it foretold beforehand, also told her grandmother to pass the message to Lucian that ''some love was worth dying for.''

The sad part is that Lena died believing Lucian never loved her, loved Katarina still and never cared for her. She died believing his actions were for selfish personal reasons and never because he was trying to protect her.

NOW this whole scene of her suicide is heartbreaking, but Lucian's response is the worst part:
1) He cries over her body
2) He never leaves her side
3) He carries her casket
4) He has a moment later where he sees Kendra and falters because he thought it was Lena for a minute.

Lucian also might have NOT let Lena know he loved her, but we know it's because loving her or her loving him causes the curse to ignite and would have caused her death, but he never could have known it was coming to end the way it did. He is celibate during their separation, and he wants nobody else.

Here are some quotes about the aftermath of Lena's death and Lucian:
''Tears formed in my vision and I buried my face against her blood-covered chest''
''He's refused to leave her side even now''
''Lucian had remained true to his word, never leaving her. It was as if he expected her to wake from a deep slumber. or maybe turn into something else''

BUT not everything ends as this is book 2 of 4.

Lena died with no soul which means she is not accepted by Heaven or can be kept in Hell. We find out at the end she is alive but something else, cold, and we also see her with her brother who seems to be the same thing as her.

''You cannot kill something that never existed in the first place. I was never born, I was cloned''

''I couldn't die, I had no soul to take. I'd gone in with that knowledge, that power to face Lucifer''

WTF???
That’s how it ended? After all the fuck fest I had to read this is how it ended?!?!?!?! DAMN!!! I want to be clear that the ending was not my reason for my rating. This book annoyed the hell out of me and I thought about not finishing it around 30%. There was so much nonsense in the first half of the book that I have no clue why it was in there! Lucian well I don’t know what that mother fucker was doing the whole time but he wasn’t badass like in book one! Ugh! All I can say is WTF? lol

For now anyway! Ugh! What kind of ending is that? I’m pissed y’all!!!

This is two times recently that I’ve went back and read the first book (which I loved both times!) to be fresh for the next book only to be sooooooo disappointed!!

This book made me need one of those!!

Hope others enjoy but not sure if I’ll be ready to read any more in this series. If she even thinks about coming out with a book about Spyder I might vomit thinking about him saying kitty! Gagging! Gagging! Gagging!!

"Are Warriors born, or are they forged through the hellfire that life forces them to walk through?" ~Magdalena

Amelia warned us that this book was going to wreck us. And she was absolutely 100% correct. This book totally destroyed me. I started it at 12:01 am and didn't stop until it was over. I cried, I laughed, I melted, my heart broke, and above all - my soul ached. Yes. This book is THAT good.

I can't say too much without giving anything away, but can say that Amelia has outdone herself. You can feel the author in every page, every emotion. The passion she put into this story is spell-binding. Lena and Lucian are a force to reckoned with. Their love story is passionate, violent, tragic, sexy as all hell, and hauntingly beautiful. Lena is a true warrior - Light, dark, selfless, and fierce. Lucian is everything you could want in an alpha male. And Spyder? Holy hell.

I can only say, read it! Playing With Monsters is a MUST before this book. Reading the entire Fae Chronicles, in order is definitely recommended. Grab a box of tissues and enjoy the ride!

Credit given, where credit is due...

This is going to sound bad but I wasn't going to admit to reading/ listening to this one. I was reading under the radar. How do I explain that I enjoyed a story that wasn't well executed? I can't say I'm a huge fan of one of the narrators and her monotone reading or how Amelia Hutchins loves to draw out her plotlines.

BUT...

It's really easy to get sucked into these Monster's lives and their world. I'm fascinated to see what the Witches will do to protect their Coven. I'm intrigued with Lucian and Spyder and I don't care what type of Monster they are, I want to know more about them. I find Lena's character a bit strange. She spends most of her time being taken advantage of, or abused yet she goes back for more if it means protecting her loved ones. Then we get to catch up with Synthia, Ryder and The Fae Chronicles gang which always puts a smile on my face. The characters make these stories and I'm always desperate for more.

And...the sexy times...OH MY LORDY!! Action stations!! It's Kinky Time!! These characters go at it like rabbits and there are NO inhibitions about where and who you're doing it in front of. Now, in a normal contemporary romance, this would horrify me and probably have me scoffing at their confidence and inhibitions. Put it in a paranormal/fantasy and it's really, really HOT!!

I'll admit if I had read Sleeping With Monsters, I probably wouldn't have rated it as high. From my past reading experiences, I know that Amelia Hutchins is not noted for her editing skills and I'm a bit of a stickler for correct spelling and grammar. Listening saves me from the eye-twitches and the need for a red pen.

I bought the Kindle version (about $5.00) and added the Audible (about $2.00), and to me, that was a pretty good deal. I don't mind paying for a good story and by listening, avoided the frustration of bad grammar. Paying $2.00 for the audio, I can't really complain about the monotone reading. At least her voice was clear and easy to understand. I kind of wish we got a bit more time listening to Aiden Snow (the male narrator), though. He definitely brings a little more emotion to the story and with that deep voice of his, it's easy to picture these Monsters.

So, I'm glad I took the gamble and went back to Playing With Monsters. Will I go back for more? Only if it comes out on Audio. Yes, I want to know what's going to happen next... CLIFFHANGER ENDING... but I'm not desperate enough to read it.

Harsh review BUT 4 stars. Take from it what you will.

This book is for you if you are into kinky fae stories with uber controling alpha of yet undetermined species and very strong willed yet sometimes foolish heroines.

Playing with Monsters by Amelia Hutchins had been recommended by Samantha Thacker on our Facebook Group. When I asked for their “First Impression or First Lines Friday” last week Samantha posted *take the kids away from the screen as it will be hot and dirty 😉 *
“My face ached, and I fumbled on the ground where I’d fallen in the collision. My hands lifted to feel whatever had smashed my face, and touched something thick and soft. I felt it and pushed my hand around it. My sight finally came back as the stars dimmed; I looked at what my hand was holding, and swallowed a gasp that was stuck in my throat.
“That’s mine,” a deep growl resonated, along with a familiar voice.
My eyes darted to the penis in question, which was making its presence known through his slacks, and it was favoring the right. It hadn’t felt like a d!ck; it felt more like a freaking snake! A giant one. I blushed as I backed up, still on the ground, aware that he was watching my clumsy effort to gain some semblance of dignity back.”

So what do you think I did? Read it duh!

I already had the book on my Kindle bought for 0,99 USD and as I had loved the Fae Chronicles I dove right in!
I began last Sunday and... read both books in a row!

I had forgotten how addictive Amelia's stories are!

Is it faultless or exceptional? No.

When Amelia writes:
" I don’t write love stories: I write fast paced, knock you on your ass, make you sit on the edge of your seat wondering what happens next books. If you’re looking for cookie cutter romance, this isn’t for you. If you can’t handle the ride, un-buckle your seatbelt and get out of the roller-coaster car now. If not, you’ve been warned. If nothing outlined above bothers you, carry on and enjoy the ride! "

She is spot on! Her books are love or hate, roll your eyes or enjoy the ride kind of books.

I thought it had too much sex scenes yet don't worry the sex is not the main plot or I would have stopped. No with time I like my sex scenes more on the feelings side than sex crazed side. Here if you love steamy wild voyeur long sex scenes you will feel like a kid in a candy store!

Rape also happens in the book and uber dominating alpha will take you pun intended so if you don't like this well pass your way.

But then you will say, why did I read both books in a row?

For the plot first as Amelia as the knack to unveil the beginning of a secret but without telling too much. Kind of like being sexy but staying classy and not whorish. So I was left in a perpetual state of curiosity and need to know:
- who was Katarina this time?
- what was Lucian?
- who was dark?
-was Joshua really dead like dead dead?
- why did Lucifer want Lena so much?
- why so many demons now?
- what did happen to Helen and Cassidy?
....
I could go on and on but the worse was WTH??? How will I WAIT for the next one? Talk about cliffy!!!

Now as much as I loved Ryder from the Fae Chronicles the jury is still out on Lucian. Time and the next book will tell but so far he is more a@holish than anything else.
Lenna was an interesting character. She was in all shades of grey and I oscillated between compassion, admiration and wanting to throttle her as her sex drive made her make bad choices several time.

Something I really liked was meeting former characters in this story!

Now praise for Amelia and her imagination to invent potions, curses, complicated stories about fractured souls and living vessels (not sure I grasped everything).

Will I read the next one? Of course duh! I have to know!
Have you read these books? Do you think you would be rather "eye roll" or "love"?
Thanks for reading!

Hmmm, Let's start with I hate Lena😤. The love-hate relationship she has with Lucian made me crazy 😵🤯 and Lucian, Oh Lucian, you have to decide if you will let yourself fall in love or not. Both you Lena and Lucian gave me a whiplash..😵
All in all the story was unpredictable, heart stopping and tear jerking. You will hate it but then fall in love in the end. It was a roller coaster of emotion, from hatred😤 to happiness❤️ to heartbreak💔🤯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

BR with my my Siren - Shanny!

Lucian...

Oh, do tell...

Ah, it's 3.5 -3.75 stars for me...

I'll keep it short.
I've read Playing with monsters #1 some time ago and I have to admit I actually forgot some of the details regarding the story, and when I went into this, I was a bit lost at first. But I honestly can't blame the book for my own memory lacking, right?!

So, after I got into the groove and all, finally picked up the lines and all the "whos, wheres and whys", I was overwhelmed with the abundance of sex, lust and desire...
and fuckin damn, i never, ever thought I would say this, ever...LOL

But yes, I thought it was just a bit too much in regard of the story, nothing was actually happening, apart from the sex, until somewhere around 80%, then it picked up in action, and I had to really work hard to capture all the different POVs of characters that presented each of their own sides, and I' m not really sure, it was all that necessary to begin with...

BUT I won't go there...

it's a fantasy genre, and in fantasy ANYTHING goes...and yet I feel like it was a chaos, a messy, pent up disorientied chaos...where I just couldn't connect to the characters...

I loved LUCIAN in book 1, but here, he was on the verge of indecisive irritating alpha asshole *sigh* who always answers to any question with a contra question...I mean, dude...can't you just give a straight fucking answer!

and the main heroine...ah, she was confusing, and so was I
then she became annoying...and I got annoyed
then she found her bearings, and she womaned-up, good for her...but too late for me to appreciate it in full...

And than the big gesture in the end...*sigh* I was kinda disappointed at first, then I tried to understand the point, and sure, i got it...I just didn't see where this might go...

surely, into the next sequel, but I'm just not following...not feeling it

and yeah, I get that all that I have said above clearly points into my direction - as the one to blame for this elusive, undiefined and absolutely subjective review, so don't go judging too harsh on this book! Give it a try, Amelia Hutchins is a fantastic writer and her imagination is beyond grasp...and I am a HUGE fan of The Fae Chronichles series, as Ryder and Syn are one of my fave couples of the fantasy world...and yet, sadly I couldn't find the common ground with the characters in this book :/

Wow!!! I absolutely LOVED this book! The story was engrossing and I could not put it down.

The H is a very controlling, powerful,j/p (jealous/possessive), anti-H and a big-time alpha-hole. He will do WHATEVER it takes to protect the h.

Excerpt:

The H talking to the h -

"You’re not stupid, but you’re already craving what I can give you. You’re pissed, so be pissed at me. I couldn’t care less if you like me, Lena, as long as you know that you’re mine. You were mine from the moment I saw you outside your house staring at it like you were lost in memories. The moment our lips touched, you were a goner whether you wanted to be or not. You want to know why Lucifer wants you. Because you are the first woman I’ve laid claim to in centuries. So fucking hate me if it makes you feel better, but know this: if you touch another man, he dies. I won’t fuck around when it comes to you. I did what I did to protect you. I couldn’t lose you, and if that ends with you hating me, fine. At least I know I did what I could to save you. I’m not the guy who gives a shit if fucked up things happen to people, but I cared if it happened to you.”

This book is part of a series. Book 1 must be read prior to reading this book and it ends on a cliffy. It's not a hfn cliff either. I'm dying for the next book. It's written in much the same way that the Fae Chronicles were with each book ending on a cliff and the next one continuing where the other left off. Together, they read as one big story.

*****Trigger alert*****
Rape, dubious consent & being observed by a group while having sex.

I’ve never disliked a book this much. Hello & welcome to my rant!!

Let me start by saying that I think the book is well written and fantasy aspect intriguing. HOWEVER, I’m a (dark) romance girlie through and through and the romance in this book drove me ABSOLUTELY UP THE FUCKING WALL!!! The romance plot was ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING!

1. FMC unwittingly/on accident triggers magic or curse
2. MMC roars “betrayal” & throws her to the side *insert really mean action*
3. Enemy hurts FMC and MMC realizes she is innocent. FMC is down super bad at this point 😩
4. MMC & FMC reunite until the cycle repeats. Again, again, again…

I have a crazy example for this!

Anyway…sorry for my rant. I really did enjoy some of the story and the smut was really passionate 🌶️ But the constant regression of the relationship between the main characters ruined it for me. I mean we are two books in and they’re basically at ground 0

enemies-to-lovers (still??!)
non con encounters
violence (everywhere!)
miscommunication
voyurism 👀
exhibitionism

This book was awful. I say that because nothing happens. The entire book was just Lucian and Lena's cat-fighting. It didn't move one bit, I got bored half the time. The pace picked up at the very end and that's what saved this book from a 1-star review because I am curious to see how the next book goes.

(Update at the end, after finally finishing the second book)

Bloody hell.
I regretted after 40% to have even invested any money into this sorry excuse of a book.
I should have known better after the first book.
I really hoped the writing style would improve. But not only did that wish not come true, even the plot crumbled into dust. And the heroines mental denials versus her body's reaction turning her into a brainless nut case keep on repeating like a broken record.

I really do love sex/erotic based books. But this right here is idiotic.
The same play over and over again. Her brain doesn't want it, she mentally fights against it, but every time he is near her, her body's attraction shuts down any brain function. We basically get told from her inner monologues how she doesn't want sex with Lucian or any of his "friends", how she hates him. But every time he comes close to her, she falls in a sex induced submission. It is tiresome. Because either she starts really fighting it, grows some backbone and does something against it. Or she just gives in, shuts the bloody hell up and makes her piece with it. Make up your bloody mind. But instead there is no bloody progress and development either way. We have a weak and more ridiculous looking heroine by the minute, who gets more pathetic, page after page. She looses every confrontation, because she acts and sasses like a petulant child, instead of a grown up woman. Every argument ends up with her being seduced into submission and the story goes on, on repeat. She doesn't learn anything. And to add misery to the whole sorry excuse of a woman, the heroine starts acting like a brainless idiot, even when he isn't near her.
Let's get drunk while forced to sleep in the same room with a guy I don't want to fuck but couldn't resist if he tried. Let's get naked in the hot tub, same situation. Let's masturbate in the shower, same situation. Let's moan out load while licking dessert from my fingers, same situation.
How stupid can an author make a character look? And those constant brain battles of hers, useless page fillers.

And then i start asking myself, why she even started to fight her attraction to begin with? Was there ever a bloody good reason?
This whole series is 75%, i like him, i like him not. My body wants him, but my mind does not. I hate him, but my pussy feels like the Niagara falls. Oh and then there is 25% of a real substantial and good plot.

There were so many little inconsistencies. Details neglected, former information forgotten or just ignored. It was messy and chaotic. Grammar errors.

UPDATE:

I finally finished the second book of this series. And with that Cliffhanger at the end, it will likely continue. In retrospect, the story, basic plot and characters are really good. BUT basically the first book and the first half of the second book suffer from a bad writing style. Endless Descriptions, mostly useless, like appearances, clothing choices, mundane tasks of showering and making tea. And worse, psychological descriptions from the heroine herself, why she acts that way. The heroine stumbles around with no real goal or point to it. And then those endless sex, seduction and attraction stammering back and forth without any progress or development. Making the heroine look like a very unattractive doormat and turning it real quick into a nauseating read. The first whole 150% (Book 1+2) messy writing at best.
The last 50% of the second book on the other hand, was great. The plot develops, the characters progress, even for the wrong reasons. The heroine has purpose, the whole writing improves tremendously. Why the author couldn't deliver that from the very start, i have no clue.

Wow!!! I absolutely LOVED this book! The story was engrossing and I could not put it down.

The H is a very controlling, powerful, j/p (jealous/possessive), anti-H and a big-time alpha-hole.

Wow… the ending had me crying

So much happened. And I cried. The ending. Man, the ending. I have to keep reading to find out what happens.

Adding to my 2020 review

The book continues from where book one left off, which is when Lucian basically erases the memories of not only Lena, but the coven as well. He is making her think that she is Kendra, not herself, because Kendra is with Lucifer. Kendra is being tortured and r@ped by Lucifer in hell.

Lena knows that something is not right with her. She doesn’t really recall a lot of things, her clothes don’t fit her the same, and she doesn’t feel like she’s herself- keep in mind that she believes that she is Kendra. She meets Lucian, again, and the attraction between them is still there but she doesn’t understand it. So, she, along with two of her friends, decide to kidnap Lucian and get some answers from him. The kidnapping scene is one of my favorite scenes LOL. Lena (or Kendra in everyone’s eyes lol) tries spells on Lucian and believes that they’re working, but little does she know that she can’t handcuff him and expect him to not retaliate or that she can really spell him 🤦🏻‍♀️. Oh dear lord. That scene was 🔥🥵💦. He unmasks Lena from within, for a few minutes, while he enjoys smexing her, and then he uses his powers again to make her think she’s Kendra.

Lucifer figures out that he doesn’t have the correct sister and he wants Lena- so he comes to her in her dreams- and the 🔥things that happened in her “dream” were sinful🥵!!!! But this means that Lucian needs help to protect her from Lucifer- and this is when he calls in for reinforcements and his BFF Spyder in order to mark her for her protection.

Jeeezus- all the smexy scenes are 🔥🥵💦😅. Although Lena tries to fight her feelings for Lucian and he fights his feelings as well, they just CANT. They complete each other- even if they go to war when they have sex, it’s always so passionate and raw👏🏻. She even has a connection with Spyder 👀.

Lots of things happened, lots of revelations happen, and the ending had me crying. Even though I know what happens, I still got emotional.

⚠️safety squad⚠️(potential spoilers ahead)
-no cheating
-no OWD between the H and h
-noncon scene when the h is marked/tied down
-some might consider some scenes as dubcon scenes
-OMD- well, OM had to help mark h- which means OM is VERY attracted to h 😬 and she kind of feels the same 😅
-OW scene with OM 🙄 even though the h isn’t with OM, she bears his mark and she feels jealousy when she sees OW servicing him while he sits on the couch thinking about the h (the H wasn’t near them, so the mark was manifesting itself around them 😬)
-people die
-there’s voyeurism involved when h is being marked

Amelia killed it again! This sequel to playing with monsters took me on an emotional rollercoaster. As expected Amelia delivered on the hotness, but I also laughed and I cried (ugly cried). I really enjoyed Lena's rediscovery of herself and growth as a character. I loved glimpse into Lucian's past, it was dark, twisted and insightful. It's awesome how Amelia intertwines characters from The Fae Chronicles in this book shedding a different light on them. This book is a must have, be prepared to devour this one. I can't wait for the next one!

I don't think this series is for me. I either hate most of the book or I'm just frustrated with the characters in general. Not sure if I'm in a bad mood before diving into these books but I'm just not really enjoying anything. Doesn't mean that Sleeping with Monsters didn't have something likable in it.. because I think there was one moment that I did enjoy something or a twist. Yet, the rest of the book was okay or meh for me.

The romance could definitely be hot at times but I just didn't really enjoy Lena and Lucian being together. It was obvious that they have chemistry and tension but I just ended up not being a huge fan. Plus things were kind of predictable and that got boring quick.

Other than that, the ending of this gave me a 'wtf is going on here' moment. Hopefully this series picks up because I'm not sure how I will be able to finish this without day drinking.

This review contains minor spoilers.

Well, that was unexpected. And I’m not referencing the ending – which is only problematic for me in that it reeks of a trilogy and I’m going to want to know what happens; despite that I really didn’t enjoy this installment very much. It was unexpected since I gave Playing With Monsters 5 stars…..and now……this.

I’m not sure why Sleeping With Monsters didn’t work for me. Maybe it’s a case of “too much of a good thing isn’t so good”….but this seemed way more over the top, soap opera-y, drama-llama-ish, than I remember the first book being – and as a result I think the things that annoyed me stood out all the more. In Playing With Monsters Lena came into her power and right before Lucian turned into a paternalistic dickwad – I felt a sense of equality in their relationship. In Sleeping With Monsters it just seemed Lena turned into a whiny, teary-eyed, drama queen. The soliloquys! All books in the Fae series are guilty of them; but they seemed to stand out here. The speeches- part lecture, part motivational, psychotherapeutic monologue! When Lucian tries to defend himself (not that it’s very defensible) and explains that he was trying to protect her from Lucifer when he mind-wiped her and made her think she was her twin sister – this is what he gets:

Lena: “You weren’t protecting me. You were being a selfish prick. You knew the coven would run from this, and they should have been able to. I wouldn’t have run from you, I’d have stood beside you and helped you get my sister out of Hell, but you didn’t give me the choice, did you? No you took it from me and you erased me, I remember that night and everything you said as you turned me into her, every detail of it. You thought I was weak, but I wasn’t. I could have loved you, Lucian. I could have been your everything and you mine, but you don’t want that, you want me destroyed. You said it since the day I met you and I should have listened. Congratulations, you destroyed me. That Lena you eased, she’s gone. I’m not the same as I was, and I sure as fuck don’t need you anymore. You made sure of it when you decided for me. You told me you would ruin me, and so you have. Watch your back, because we are no longer friends. Us? We are nothing, just as you wanted us to be from the beginning. You’re Lucian, the one who destroyed me, ruined me and I’m just the girl who let it happen.”

For the love of God – take a breath! It’s not good when you want to tell your main character to STFU!!

I was a little worried that other reviews indicated that this installment was all sex and little story until the end. In reality there was a very good story with a fairly intricate, twisty plot hidden in there; Lucifer has a grudge against Lucian, Hades is a double agent, Katerina now hates Lucian and is in cahoots with Lucifer, witches are born dark, sharing of souls, choosing to go dark, family drama, evil fathers, pregnancies all around and missing seals that unleash the gates of hell! There’s definitely plot; but it seemed to get buried under minutia and a storyline that could have been tighter and shorter….and of course the sex.

You know what you’re getting into with these books; definitely borderline erotica. I’m just a little over the Lucian/Lena…..love you/hate you/need you angst/sex fest. Too much contrived tension and conflict. Lucian getting mad at Lena/Kendra for “letting Lucifer in” for “letting him touch what’s his”, Seriously? like she WANTED to have sex with Lucifer – so she could eventually be tortured and killed. REALLLY???? It wouldn’t be that he caused the entire event to happen by wiping Lena’s memories and leaving her vulnerable to flashbacks to their connection? He may as well have served her to Lucifer on a platter – but like a dog with a bone he (and his little band of merry men – or at least Spyder) harps on it for another 400 pages instead of taking any responsibility.

And then the fact that Lucian doesn’t want to let Lena go and makes with the caveman, “Mine, MINE, MINE”; yet then yo-yos her back and forth. Pull her close, push her away. An awful lot of emotional instability for an immortal not at his first rodeo. Granted he may be struggling with a little bit of denial because Hades has to remind him: “You fell in love with the first one; three days after you admitted it, she was murdered – by you. And she keeps dying with every reincarnation. One of you falls in love, and she dies. If she loves you, she dies; if you love her, she still dies. Do us a fucking favor: fall in love with someone who isn’t associated with this fucking curse so that you can know what it feels like to have love and get it back and not have her die”.

I’m also a little over the purple prose of wrecked and ruined pussies.

The surprise at 80% was kind of cool and I briefly hoped that Lena would become a badass again…..but…..not so much. I think I was supposed to accept that she was a badass because she kept saying she was fine when clearly she wasn’t…however truth be told – her protestations of being “fine” weren’t especially convincing.

Compared to the previous book in this series, this one was on steroids! Woow!
The ending wrecked me, I was so not expecting that, but all the more credits to the author for that. Well done!
We follow several plot lines, and the story just gets more and more complicated. I wouldn't say that the hell gates are open, but they have definitely cracked, and things are about to get even more complex if it's possible. I love Lena, love Lucian, and although I know there is no way the story would go in that direction, I am rooting for Spyder, he's slowly becoming my favorite in this bunch.

I do hope that was not the final book. Cause the end destroyed my soul.
How far would you go to safe the ones you love. Even sacrifice that one thing you
desired the most.
It’s heartbreaking, tearful and might destroy your believe in happy ever after.

Disappointed

This was hard to read. I have been a fan of this author but after this I truly don't think I can pick up another of her books. I only gave it two stars because at least the end got back to an actual story. The beginning and middle was disgusting and disappointing.

The first half of the book was a bit of fairy porn. 20% plot, 80% sex. ( and not the best I've read )
In the second half the plot thickened but was scattered in my opinion. I usually love alpha mail but I couldn't fall in love with Lucian. He couldn't convince me that he was the strongest creature in the universe and his cliche sentences- ( "I will destroy you" ... oh please ... after the 4'th time my eyes started to roll ) they only bored me.
Lenna's character was interesting , but again , she was so all over the place that I couldn't ralate to her .
( Lucian is no Ryder and Lenna is no Synthia )
The end was surprising and a bit disappointing, but that is not the reason for my disappointment with the book.

“Lucian Blackstone was a hurricane, and I was the land he intended to destroy. He was a category five, creating and wreaking havoc, knocking down defenses as he obliterated me.”

Sheesh my emotions were all over the place reading this book! The Monsters series is even better than the original Fae Chronicles in my opinion.

Let’s talk about how daft Lena acted in this book. Lucian told her at least 3 times that when you loves or cares about someone you might have to push them away to keep them safe. She even agreed. Then what does she do? She turns around and complained that he doesn’t love or care about her. *face palms myself* That pretty much sums her up in this book.

Lucian and Spyder? H O T! Especially when they are handling “business” together. Where can I find one of each? Haha

The ending destroyed me, especially Lucian’s reaction. It’s hard to read these in order when I’m dying to read more about Lucian haha
