Wealth is not just about adding zeroes to your net worth but having enough to live an unconstrained life. Money Wise shows you the way. It cuts through the clutter of jargon and technical terms, leading you step by step on how to grow wealthy. In it, you will learn: Ways of allocating your income The only mutual funds hack worth knowing Why you should be watching not what Warren Buffett says but what he does Written in Shenoy’s trademark style, Money Wise is a book as much fun to read as it is informative. If you want to start investing, this is the book for you. If you have already started, then read this and up your game.
This is a very basic book, targeted at beginners, written in a casual language. He tries to cover a lot of topics - personal finance, fundamental analysis, trading styles, insurance, scams, etc. but does not go deep enough in any topic. I expected a little more complex ideas from Deepak Shenoy.
I am not the expert in financial industry and this book shows you how dense it is to understand and comprehend the myriad world of stocks, cash flows, balance sheets, forex, insurance, returns and more. My key lessons from this book: 1. Go for MFs - I added a US focused MF right while reading the chapter (Motilal) 2. Term insurance over ULIPs 3. The part about not doing default savings account is good - hadn't considered it. Will do.
Overall, the book is quite rich - definitely not the easy flow one like Let's Talk Money but still important. I do hope Deepak gets a better editor. There is a lot packed in but story telling and chapter framing can be improved in the next edition.
The book is good especially for the beginners who want to initiative into stock market However it misses important investment options such as EPF, PPF, Suknya account, etc .There is no mention of NPS
As regards to insurance advice he suggests 40 years expenses coverage ..give me a break! The corpus calculated will be much higher for an engineer to earn through his entire life....then only in dying one can make more! His cautionary tales are important as well.
Very good start with a lot of info about stock markets, investment options for an early investor. Insightful for someone who is just starting earnings & investment in life. A little slow paced as it goes deeper into the book.
This book is a very good one for someone starting with their financial journey. Deepak Shenoy has beautifully selected nuggets of timeless wisdom from his vast experience and crafted an absolutely fantastic ready reckoner, which in my view is a good reference for one and all. Deepak has described the various aspects of one’s financial journey through multiple stages of their life and how they could traverse through the myriad of the jungle, that exists in the real world.
What makes this book endearing is that Deepak has quoted multiple anecdotes from his personal life. Experiences such as these make these incidents quite relatable and somewhere connects deeply. Personally for me, since our timelines match almost closely along with some experiences quoted in the book, I found the book extremely easy to read, but very quick to connect and assimilate. Some illustrations like husband-wife dialogue planning for their child’s future would definitely help the reader to have similar conversations in their life. An excellent idea !!!
The best part of the book for me was the Stocks section. This is a humungous ocean, with multiple perspectives, avenues & outcomes. The author has condensed this wisdom and packed the same into a wonderful section which provides enough food for thought for the reader to explore more. The various strategies and pitfalls, specially falling knife etc is quite well documented and brought out. Concluding the book with various scams, what they meant, how they operated, the author has ensured that the entire gamut of financial space with their pitfalls are covered in good amount.
This book is a refresher course for someone already into financial planning. For those starting with the journey, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED read.
Really enjoyed reading this. While I knew a lot of the concepts that Deepak writes about, certainly learnt a thing or two. Also Deepak's highly accessible and personable style of writing makes even a drab topic like wealth building easily understandable and immensely readable. Do hope he writes a sequel to this one !!!
Great book covering the basics of personal finance. Only thing I disagree with is the author suggesting not to buy a term insurance if you don't have a dependency in your early 20s.
A good personal finance book to start your investing journey in India(very India centric and quite helpful). Double up this book along with Stock to Riches by Parag Parikh
Deepak has covered fundamental concepts and the book is for novices and for readers who either do not understand these basic concepts and want to understand them in a casual and straightforward language OR for fresh-out-of-college graduates who are embarking on an investment journey.
I, however, liked the last chapter which does not go with the general theme of the book but covers some of the recent scams and Ponzi schemes and Deepak has explained their modus-operandi in a simple and interesting manner.
Plus point: Could be read in a couple of hours straight.
Disclosure: I am a fan of Deepak's explainers on Twitter and Podcasts and follow him on SM, but this book did NOT meet my expectation.
What I liked? 1. Personal Finance written in a memoir style. It made the subject more relatable. 2. Deepak Shenoy didn’t cut down on numbers and technical details for most concepts despite maintaining a memoir style. It gave some intuitive sense of math behind personal finance. 3. Deepak is from NITK apparently. So he brought some nostalgia for me ☺️ 4. Clear actionables. So passes well as a self-help book. 5. Liked his take on scams. “Every scam is a story believed to be true”.
So so 1. I expected less rule of thumbs and more math. He did it for life insurance calculation. But as the book proceeds it is more of rule of thumbs. It’s okay for many I guess.
Another rare case where I just had to abandon a book. Deepak seems to be trying to repackage, whatever has been told already multiple times, in a layman language but it didn’t cut for me. Nothing new and the repackaging was not fun at all so I have to pass.
“Clearly, saving a little more has a great impact on your returns, in the long run, than simply finding that fantastic stock, or bond, or mutual fund. People focus too much on the latter aspects. It’s the former - saving more - that has a greater impact on long-term goals.”
If you want to read a simple guide toward financial planning and literacy, Money Wise is the book for you! It shows you the way to save and invest smartly and thereby build wealth which gives you financial freedom. The USP of Money Wise is that it doesn’t have complex jargon from the finance world and hence it makes it easily readable for beginners who are starting their investment or wealth-building journey.
The primary things you will learn in this book are: 💯 Ways of allocating your income 💯 Mutual Funds hacks worth knowing 💯 Why you should be watching not what Warren Buffet says but what he does
Below are some important insights from the book: ✨ Initially, in the first few years of your working life, focus on saving as much as you can. ✨ When you have enough money, think about “allocation”. Think about putting your money into different “allocations” or “buckets”. For eg: The low-risk bucket is Fixed Deposits, High-risk bucket is Stock Market. ✨Plan for the absolute necessities: For eg: Retirement, Children’s education, etc. ✨ And with the rest enjoy your life
How simple is that?😍 Investing isn’t as complex as it seems if we take care of the basic things and have the most essential thing: PATIENCE.💯
The book is a wonderful guide. It gives brief knowledge about how mutual funds, stocks, FDs, and other assets work, which strategies to be adapted, which things we should keep in mind and be careful about, etc. It also has a chapter on money scams and malpractices which are nightmares for the people whose money is involved in them.
Must Read for those who are starting their investing journey. Also, those who are already in the investment arena can level up their game with the tactics given in the book.💯✨
This book works for a non-financial person for sure, but I think it may work as a revision for a financial person! :-)
The book has * makes you understand consumer friendly financing terms * Choosing the right reasons to invest or not to invest * "trust being challenged" in the financial sector in chronological order.
The whole concept of money is daunting and put in a packaged book that makes it easy to understand with heard-off concepts, just when you think it is becoming numbers driven, and technical, Deepak makes it simple for the reader.
Key takeaways - * It gives the pros and cons and leaves you there to make your own decision. * If you succeed, you are good, alone and no need to go out with a bugle. If you fail, fail small, learn from your mistakes and don't repeat them and share them. * Choose "boring".
The book talks to you like a friend, I have heard Deepak Shenoy on a few podcasts, the book is written just like how he talks. In the end, it feels like "what my papa (uncle, CA, trusted financial advisor) says" before investing. From the book's point of view, I just feel, there was more Deepak wanted to share, it as looney toons end "that's all folks".
Every topic is explained in a very understandable language with examples so anyone from any background can understand it. Each topic is given a general overview and some main points to remember. It is quite fascinating how effortlessly Deepak has captured this much in just less than 250 pages.
So if you're a beginner in finance or just want to get started in the field of personal finance then this book is for you. If you're already read a few books and have some knowledge about finance then also this book is good to revisit some topics.
Deepak also shares some of his financial wisdom nuggets here and there in the book and they're quite good.
Quite an easy and interesting read and won't take you more than a week to read.
Useful read. Gives to the point advice in a domain full of abundant information. Felt a bit generic and abstract at some places but overall the points covered are good enough to build a perspective for investing without having to loose sleep on it. Gives relatable examples on strategising investment based on individual apetite and stage of life. The last chapter is a much needed one for everyone who want to protect themselves and their closed ones from the lures of scams. At last, one book that is closer to practical approach than just vague advices and rules.
But, this book solo can't be your guide to investing. Need to first build basic understanding of the jargons and concepts of the world of investing.
I have been enjoying Deepaks's writing on Capitalmind (his company) when thinking about personal finance. His matter of fact writing and worldly insights have helped me make better decisions for my own investments. So this book was an easy choice for me. In the first 4 chapters, He distills the major themes on how to go about achieving the freedom that comes with financial security in the long term. In the final chapter, he warns on the dangers of chasing low risk, high returns - NSEL, MLM (Pyramid schemes), crypto, mixed with lot of personal anecdotes.
This was a quick and light read. Except the abrupt ending, this book kept me engrossed till the end. I would recommend this to a college graduate who just joined a new job and also to a person in mid-fifties about to retire.
It's a good book for those wanting to understand basic of finance when it come to wealth planning and management...
The author does not get deep into each subject, but personally, that was not my expectation...The sheer breadth of topics he covers wud not have been possible had each topic been delved into further than that which has been done...
The narrative style is easy and not jargon oriented or technical...
Not a step by step "Get quick Rich" guide, but would recommend as a read to those who want to start their journey to financial planning, especially those looking to invest in the market...
This is a beginner's book. Many complex concepts are explained in a very beginner friendly way. Although I was familiar with most concepts in the books based on my personal reading on personal finance, this is surely a good book for any one who is starting out. Only thing which could have been better is that the book just ends abruptly in the middle of nowhere, a summary table or illustration with few important points would be a great addition to this book.
Really good explanations on various concepts. If you're a beginner then this will be one of the best books to understand MF and stocks investing, the language is very simple. I picked it, since I've been following Deepak's posts on Twitter etc.
He takes an extreme view on the risk associated with the stock investments, for obvious reason of promoting his venture. I wouldn't say what he said is wrong or exaggerated, but it's towards the extreme end of high risk.
The first of many (to-be-released) books by Deepak I hope!
It is always good to learn from the knowledge & experiences of others, and the author has put forward 1% of his.
Parts of this book are very useful for beginners who want to get into the world of managing your life finances Parts are for people who have already begun and need a rudder Parts are for people who want to dive deeper into MFs & stocks.
This is my first personal finance book (from Indian point of view)
Most of these concepts are easy to understand if you already having been roaming around the self help / personal finance space
I truly recommend this for beginners. Especially Indians. Pattu (freefincal) and Deepak Shenoy are the only sane ones to give directions for our financial future.
Reading this book will help you know what to do and what to avoid only in the basics and essential sense.
Really well written, an engaging story-telling style. As a long-time listener to The Capital Mind podcasts, many of the ideas are not new to me, but they are nonetheless very important and ground-breaking. The best part about it is the no-BS attitude where Deepak just tells you how it is; no matter how contrarian it may sound.
Recommended for anybody starting out in personal finance, and for everybody who likes to read how they can get scammed. :)
The author is really good at explaining the concepts using stories. These stories are so easy to understand. Rather than explaining to others just gift this book. If this book doesn't ignite curiosity then I don't think anything will.
I wonder if another book could be released just all about stock market stories narrated by Deepak Shenoy. It will be fun to read.
After reading so many books on personal finance, this one was one which delivers straight information. Author is clear about writing names, examples and never shies away from giving to the point view from his side. A recommended read for beginners who are taking baby steps in personal finance field.
Good book for beginner investors without complex technical jargon, which makes it easy to read and understand. You will find a lot of similar advice in other popular finance books but this is mainly in Indian context, so that’s different. Covers some investing rules, pitfalls & scams to avoid when investing. I kinda liked it.
finally an excellent work by an Indian writer.... I was wondering about this kind of financial knowledge in the typical Indian context.... he completely understood what an Indian investor needs..... especially for beginners and enthusiastic learners who really want to learn and start an investing journey this is a must read book....
This is a nice book for beginners. Good intro to basic concepts. If you've read Deepak's Abeyaar series you know his writing style. Decent gift to someone starting out earning/investing - however I would still rate Monika Halan's book as higher.
