Perfect for fans of Jane K. Cleland and Ellery Adams, the second volume in Tracy Gardner’s antiques-themed mystery series finds appraiser Avery Ayers sleuthing a murder in a castle.
Thanks to Aunt Midge’s unlikely friendship with Nicholas Pennington, the Duke of Valle Charme, Avery Ayers and her associates at Antiques and Artifacts Appraised head off to their most glamorous assignment yet—cataloguing and appraising the contents of a castle-like mansion on the Hudson River. But regal splendor becomes a backdrop to mayhem when the precious Viktor Petrova timepiece disappears—and housekeeper Suzanne Vick plummets from a parapet to her death.
Avery, her dad William, and colleagues Micah Abbott and Sir Robert Lane soon learn that Suzanne’s predecessor also met with an untimely end. Further, the housekeeper’s suspicious demise coincides with Avery’s discovery that many of the Duke’s most priceless heirlooms have been replaced by fakes.
Detective Art Smith lends his expertise, but the suspect list encompasses the Duke’s entire retinue—including his family. Could the killer be someone intimately familiar with the Pennington estate, such as caretaker couple Ira and Lynn Hoffman, the Penningtons’ chauffeur Roderick, or even one of the heirs to the Pennington fortune?
Then the duke himself is injured in an inexplicable riding accident, and the clock swiftly ticks toward a reckoning with a cold-blooded killer. A criminal mastermind is making a desperate bid for ill-gotten riches…can Avery bring the culprit to justice before her time is up?

My first book by this author and I liked her style. Peril at Pennington Manor introduced me to Avery Ayers who is a partner in Antiques and Artefacts Appraised. The name describes the business which involves valuing and proving the provenance of valuable paintings, statues, jewellery etc.
Avery, her father and two other partners visit Pennington Manor to do an appraisal on items in the house (or castle) and soon become involved in a succession of murders and apparent thefts of antiques. Avery's on again off again boyfriend is a Detective who quickly gets himself into the investigation.
It is a standard cosy story but the mystery is quite tricky and there are plenty of possibilities for a potential culprit. I also liked the characters very much and enjoyed the romance between Avery and Art. That really is the boyfriend's name. It made me smile considering the theme of the book. Anyway it is a good read for cosy fans.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Avery Ayers and her dad William, headed to Pennington Manor in their roles as appraisers for the Antiques and Artifacts, with the Duke, Nicholas Pennington, there to show them the manor and where to set up. Their associates, Micah and Sir Robert arrived and the four of them set to work. Avery’s Aunt Midge was close to the Duke and had been for years, so by association, he welcomed the group. But it wasn’t long before they, and in turn Nick, realized some priceless pieces were either missing or had been replaced with fakes.
When the housekeeper Suzanne Vick, fell to her death from the high roof of the manor, the police and emergency services were on the scene within minutes. Detective Carter was running proceedings, and indepth interviews followed before anyone was allowed to leave. In the days that followed, Detective Art Smith, a friend of Avery’s, came in undercover, as an appraiser, and worked with Avery. She had good thoughts, suggestions that were feasible, as they worked through the family, staff and others in their search for a suspect in both the murder, and the trouble with the valuable antiques…
Peril at Pennington Manor is the 2nd in An Avery Ayers Antique Mystery series by Tracy Gardner and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I haven’t read the first, I had no trouble working out where things were going. A great character list, a beautiful mansion, and a twisted bad ‘guy’ – the mystery was well done, and I had no clue as to the killer. I went with the flow, happy to let it take me where it would! Looking forward to #3! Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
In a modern day castle setting, Author Gardner pens another stunning cozy mystery showcasing the thefts of valuable antiques. Avery Ayers of Ayers Antiques and Artifacts Appraisals heads the team to appraise a treasure trove inside a three-story castle. The owner, Duke Nicholas Pennington, is a friend of Aunt Midge’s from London. He and his dysfunctional family are currently in residence at the castle. Minutes after the Duke starts showing Avery around, a valuable gold pocket watch in a locked glass case is discovered missing. The Ayers team begins the job only to be sidelined when a horrifying, fatal accident takes place. The question is…was it an accident, or murder?
The story is exciting and full of plot twists. Hidden staircases are located, and several more stolen antiques are noted that have been taken right out from under the owner’s nose. I thought the identity of the thief and killer was well-hidden in the twisty plot. Detective Art Smith, Avery’s Beau, is on-site, working undercover to provide protection for the Ayers employees. Cute pets make for several ‘awww’ moments. Light humor eases some of the tense moments. This is an entertaining series and readers will enjoy!
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books. All opinions are my own. Thank you.
Avery Ayers and her team at Antiques and Artifacts Appraised got the assignment to appraise and catalog the contents of the Hudson River. The manor (that feels more like a castle) is being sold by the duke, who happens to be a good friend of Aunt Midge (Avery’s aunt).
The first time Avery and her dad William visit the manor, they realize that the Viktor Petrova pocket watch is missing. The duke is stunned but determined to ensure all the antiques are cataloged and accounted for.
On the first day of work, the team ends up being a witness to the death of Suzanne, the housekeeper at the manor. Avery’s instincts tell her it’s not a simple case of accidental death. Detective Art Smith steps into the scene to aid with the investigation and keep Avery safe. Moreover, the duo has to decide the future of their relationship (if there is one).
As more antiques turn out to be fake, the duke ends up in a riding accident, and another employee of the manor is found dead. With the list of suspects including every person in the manor, Avery and Art must sort through the maze to arrive at the truth.
Are the missing antiques and the deaths related? Are there two different criminals to track and unearth? Can the duo solve the cases before they face the bullet?
My Observations:
The book began with an interaction between Avery and Art, and I wasn’t sure of the dynamics. It took me a while to get into the subplot (the family, relationships, etc.). The case, however, was clear enough.
There were quite a few characters to track, which made it a little difficult to stay up to date with the developments concerned with the main plot. Luckily, I wasn’t in a mood to solve the case, which made it easy to go with the flow (and round the rating to 4 stars).
Getting to Avery and Art was nice. I had a better knowledge of their relationship by the end of the book. I would love to know where it heads in the future books.
Avery was intelligent (even if she jumped to conclusions at times). She was nosy too, which is rather a prerequisite to becoming an amateur detective. But the book balanced her sleuthing and antique appraisal work. I learned something about the field. That was fun.
The book has a super friendly dog and seven teeny kittens! Yeah… one kitty is black and white, and another has tiger stripes. Sigh! (Can you see my heart-eyes?)
Tilly appeared childish and strange in the first half. Must be her teenage acting up. Still, I couldn’t understand her sudden shifts in mood.
The pacing was uneven (it slumps in the middle), but the end wrapped up things pretty well. The characters weren’t fully developed, though they serve the intended purpose. No far-fetched theories or solutions, so that’s a plus.
To sum up, Peril at Pennington Manor is a blend of cozy mystery and family drama. The book would make a nice read when you want something that doesn’t demand too much of your energy.
Thank you, NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
I liked this one a lot and I am currently reading the first book in the series to get me up to date. One of the few books in cosy mystery series where I didn't find anything lacking and I like that the series is based around the world of antiques and rare artifacts. Good, well developed characters, good plotline and the pace of the book and mystery is well maintained throughout. The cover art work is eye catching as well.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Crooked Lane Books and the author Tracy Gardner for the e-Arc of the book. This book publishes on 7th June, 2022.
Periil at Pennington Manor was a fun read. This is the second in the series. I read the first Ruby Red Herring which I enjoyed also. Avery Ayres is the main character who works at her family's business Antiquities and Artifacts Appraisers. The other characters contribute to the story. Avery and her father have been asked by her Aunt Midge''s friend, Nicholas, a duke who plans to put his estate Pennington Manor up for sale. As he shows Avery and her father, William around the manor they discover that some of their things are replaced by fakes and his family's antique pocket watch is missing from the cabinet. While there the housekeeper, Suzanne Vicks, is pushed off the roof and falls to her death. This is where the story takes off. There are two parts to the story. besides what is going on at the manor, her sister, Tilly has come home early from England.
Avery wants to find out who murdered Suanne and who has taken the missing articles. Art Smith, a detective, and her boyfriend look into the murder. Greg Lightfoot the gardener and Suzanne's cousin is also murdered. The murderer attacks Avery and stabs Art leaving him for dead. The murder is brought to justice.
I look forward to the next in the series.
Thank you, NetGalley and Crooked Lane for this ARC.
She is surprised to learn that Aunt Midge is old friends with Nicholas Pennington, the Duke of Valle Charme. He is planning to sell his mansion on the Hudson River and Antiques and Artifacts Appraised has been awarded the assignment of cataloging and appraising a long list of antiques and valuable artwork. When the Duke attempts to show them his prize possession, a Viktor Petrova timepiece, they discover it is missing. Before they can even attempt to find it a scream rings out. Hurrying to find the source, they find the housekeeper, Suzanne Vick has fallen from the roof to her death . . . the same way the previous housekeeper died.
After Suzanne’s death, Avery determines several of the Duke’s prized heirlooms are missing and have been replaced by inferior copies. The suspects for the missing objects and the murder have to be either part of the Pennington family or their staff, but who? Avery with the assistance again from Detective Art Smith is going to do their best to find out before the thief/killer turns the tables on them.
After reading Ruby Red Herring I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Peril at Pennington Manor and author Tracy Gardner sure didn’t disappoint!
All of the characters I loved in the first book are back and joined by Avery’s dad, William. Avery and Tillie are so happy to have their dad back but they are all still dealing with the death of their mom. For William, it is still especially hard. I loved the way the author has written these characters. William hasn’t really had a chance to mourn his wife’s passing. Tillie has some issues at school abroad and Avery truly was carrying the weight of the business on her shoulders. These characters are true to life and feel so genuine. The supporting cast is so well-crafted too.
We meet several new characters that include the Duke of Valle Charme, his family, and his staff. All developed nicely over the course of the story. Many end up on the suspect list at one time or another giving a vast number of possibilities. They all reside in the fabulous Pennington Manor when they are in the States. The Old English style mansion has its own secrets and plenty of little nooks. It also has a huge pool and circular turret staircases. Outside you will find lily ponds, a greenhouse, perfectly manicured gardens, and a large stable full of horses. A wonderful setting for a mystery or two.
Ms. Gardner has written a delightful mystery with some really nice twists and turns to create moments of misdirection. Very well-plotted, I was kept guessing right up until the very end. The reveal was very exciting with some of our favorite characters finding themselves in peril.
The author also balances out the suspenseful moments with the exact amount of humor needed. Some of it delivered by a clowder of kittens and a majestic Afghan hound named Halston.
I was happy to see that Avery was able to take part in something she had worked hard for before the story drew to a close. Tillie also has a new opportunity and that Art and Avery’s relationship is growing.
Peril at Pennington Manor is a terrific follow-up to Ruby Red Herring. I do recommend reading the books in order because reading this book first reveals something very important that would be spoiled by reading this one prior to Ruby Red Herring.
What an entertaining little cozy this turned out to be! The writing was outstanding. I stood up well as a standalone. It was well paced. The plot was engaging. I would love to be an antiques and artifacts Appraiser! The plot kept me guessing with plenty of red herrings. There were a couple of side stories (Tilly's issues and the romance between Avery & Art) that I usually wouldn't be a fan of. I find they usually muddy the main plot and take away from the mystery aspect. However, I am happy to report that was not the case here! And the characters were plenty and likable (including some pet cuteness). Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I can't wait to see what these characters get up to in the next installment of this series.
Avery Ayers is back! Her life has settled considerably since the beginning of book 1. Her father has returned and taken over the household so Avery can go back to being a carefree singleton while he manages the more stressful aspects of taking care of a household. Unfortunately not everything is business as usual when Antiques and Artifacts Appraised takes over a project at a secluded estate owned by a royal family from abroad. When Avery and her colleagues begin examining the priceless heirlooms that fill the manor house they immediately discover that someone has taken advantage of the family's absence to abscond with some of their most valuable treasures.
There's a lot going on in this book. Avery is training for her first full marathon, she's reconnected with Hank while Art was conspicuously missing, and Antiques and Artifacts Appraised has been granted a contract with a local auction house that is keeping them very busy... but not so busy that they'd turn down the opportunity to appraise a manor house full of priceless treasure. I found the manor house and the royal family to be a bit of a stretch. Though it was an interesting premise it would have been more believable if it was a branch of the Vanderbilt family or something like that as opposed to a royal family from another country. I also struggled throughout to keep all the characters straight. There were the Hoffmans, the Wolfs, Mathew, Roderick, Greg, Suzanne, I think there was an Ian, there were times I had to wrack my brain to figure out who was who and when they showed up in a scene I also had to quickly try to figure out if they belonged where they were.
The mystery itself was interesting but there wasn't much in the way of investigation and there was only one clue dropped that I was able to recall looking back and it wasn't really a clue, more of a hint that could have meant anything.
I enjoyed the story, I like Avery and I like Art and the overall story is headed in a good direction in general, but I didn't like it quite as much as the first book in the series. I do look forward to continuing with the series.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
This tale, Peril at Pennington Manor follows on from instalment one, Ruby Red Herring, in Tracy Gardner's Avery Ayers Antique Mystery series and I enjoyed reading it immensely.
Avery Ayers, 26 has taken over the family business, Antiquities & Artifacts Appraised, alongside partners and colleagues, Micah Abbott and Sir Robert Lane. The company has an office in Lilac Grove and a branch in Manhattan. She is living back at home with her younger sister Tilly and their eccentric Aunt Midge and her Afghan hound. Her parents' involvement in a road accident hit Avery hard but now Avery's life is very busy as she is off to the Hudson River area where she will be cataloguing and appraising the contents of a castle-like mansion with its conical spires, turrets, and stables. However, a precious antique disappears and the housekeeper falls from a parapet.
The characters are entertaining and well-formulated, the plot has depth and the mystery held my interest throughout. There are romantic moments between Avery and Detective Art Smith and some cute pet moments. I like Tracy Gardner's writing style and I'm keen to read book three.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Crooked Lane via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
This is an exciting cozy mystery that kept me guessing until the reveal. I'm a big fan of cozies that involve antiques, so this book appealed to me right away. When it's discovered that precious valuable antiques have been stolen and replaced with fakes, it up to Avery to help sort through the clues and figure out whodunit. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
I really enjoyed this book, the second in the Avery Ames Antiques Mystery series. This is the first book I have read in the series, however I had no problems following the characters or catching up on the back story. I definitely will be picking up the first book in the series because I liked this one so much.
This story is about Avery Ames and her antiquities crew being invited to Pennington Manor, the stateside residence of the Duke of Valle Charme (and a friend of her Aunt Midge!). Avery's team has been asked for appraisals of several pieces in the home because the Duke is planning on putting the property on the market and wanted to sell some of the antiques.
One of the Duke's most prized pieces, a Viktor Petrova timepiece is missing, and as Avery and her team are evaluating other pieces, several notable fakes are found. Meanwhile, a maid, Suzanne falls from the roof and it looks like it was no accident. Avery and her police friend Art start looking for clues and interviewing staff along the way.
I enjoyed the character development, and I liked that the local police did not discredit Avery's opinions and suggestions in the case. This was a good cozy mystery and I look forward to more in the series.
I received a copy of this book in exhange for my honest opinion. Thanks to #NetGalley and the publishers.
After reading the first book in this series, A Ruby Red Herring, I looked forward to reading the second book in this series, and once again, I was not disappointed. In this book, Avery, along with her family and colleagues from Antiques and Artifacts Appraised, have been invited by a friend of Aunt Midge to catalog and appraise the contents at the prestigious Pennington Manor. More like a castle than a manor, everyone is excited for this assignment. When noticing several items have gone missing, and the sudden death of a staff member, it seems the manor holds more secrets than the stories behind the antiques.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. Although, I have several series I love, this series is one that takes me to the time and place as I immersed myself in its pages. I have a new admiration for the work Avery does, as I continue to learn about the process of authentication of the heirlooms being cataloged. Several people from the manor become suspects and trying to narrow it down was a challenge. I did enjoy the exchanges between the characters, and I’m interested to see where Avery, and Detective Art Smith’s relationship will head. I highly recommend this series!
I received this book as a gift; thoughts and recommendations are my own.
Avery Ayers is part of a small but prestigious antique appraisal firm assigned to survey tje contents of a manor house on the Hudson. Beautiful grounds and antiques but missing collection pieces and the sudden death of the housekeeper ruin the ambiance. Interesting cozy with loads of antiques info to buttress the mystery. Quite enjoyable. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy from the publisher through Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
I enjoyed the first book in this series and requested this second book when I saw it on Netgalley. Peril at Pennington Manor is the second book in this series and follows Avery on another assignment. They are hired to do appraisals at Pennington manor. Quickly it becomes clear this is not just another normal job, some heirloom pieces have gone missing and have been replaced by fakes. And then there is a murder as well.
I liked the mystery in this one and how there was the case of the stolen/ missing antiques as well as the murder. I liked seeing how they work on uncovering the truth of what happened to both these things and the way the storylines get woven together as they both involve Pennington manor and those who live and work there. I did feel the wrap up could've been a bit more extensive as there were a few more questions I wanted answered. The main lines are clear, but I would've liked a few more specifics.
I liked how Avery got involved in the case as it involved her job and how Art worked together with her again. I was a bit annoyed at how Art handled a few things at the start and the way Avery reacted, but I liked to see how they worked things out and their relationship went to better footing again as the book progressed. There is a bit of a romantic sub plot as they try and figure out whether to give their relationship another try or if the problems that got them apart in the first place are too big too overcome.
Besides the mysteries and the romance there are a few side plot lines as well, with Avery training for a marathon, an antique she appraises for a friend, Tilly who unexpectedly comes home from school as well as her father who is having some troubles adjusting back to normal life. It made for an interesting read with everything going on and I enjoyed reading it. It has less of that typical small town vibe as most other cozies, but I like how that gives this series a different feel with the small town where Avery lives and how she works in the city usually. I like the focus on antiques and Avery's job.
To summarize: Peril at Pennington Manor is a great sequel in this series. There are two mysteries in this book, a murder and some antiques that have gone missing. I like how Avery gets involved in the cases and seeing how it all progresses throughout the books. The reveal made sense, although I would've liked a few more answers. Besides the mysteries there are some other sub plot lines going on as well involving Avery, her romance with Art and some plot lines involving her family. I enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next one.
After a bruising encounter as she investigated the provenance of a valuable ruby whilst mourning the devastating loss of her parents, Avery Ayers needs some down time. The chance to appraise antiques at the nearby manor house of a European head of state while training for the New York Marathon seems like an idea way to achieve that.
All is not as it seems at Pennington Manor however, and soon Avery and her team discover someone has been replacing the antiquities with far more recent copies. When the body of a member of the household is discovered she knows any chance of relaxation has dieds with them.
Detective Art Smith once again joins Avery, as she looks closely at both the artifacts and her ever increasing suspect list, insisting there is unseen danger at the stately home but neither them realise just how desperate their killer has become. He also has a situation at home which was a welcome distraction at times from the main case and all its intricacies.
This is the second Avery Ayers mystery and is an excellent addition to what I hope will become a lengthy series of books. With her devastating family problems and floundering personal life Avery is a great protagonist along with Detective Art Smith who is my favourite character so far.
My only problem was the author's propensity for unnecessary blasphemy. I have no general issue with this but there were times when it was a shock and not in a good way! Apart from this the whole experience was great, with entertaining protagonists and another great group of suspicious characters to enjoy as I tried to work out whodunit. I failed, but look forward to trying again next time!
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent series and I am already looking forward to spending more time within the world of antiquities!
Another awesome installment in this new series! I fell in love with the key characters in the first book and just had to see what they were up to this time. That Aunt Midge sure has her connections with getting Avery and her crew an appraisal job for royalty. Something hinky was going on at the Duke's manor though. Things did seem a tad slower than the first book because that one obviously had the constant suspense of the "is he alive or not?" question.
But boy when this one picked up some speed toward the end, I just couldn't read fast enough! The events leading up to catching the perp were pretty suspenseful with Art and Avery sleuthing together. I was never totally sure about whodunit although it wasn't who I originally suspected. But there were definitely some exciting moments going on.
I loved that Avery and Art were getting closer and opening up about themselves, especially Art. The whole cat dad thing was so funny too! And super sweet. Avery got to achieve something she'd always dreamed about, had closure about something else, and her future with Art was definitely looking brighter!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
This is book two in the new cozy series "Avery Ayers Antique Mysteries ". The first in this new series was smart, fun and had a well crafted group of supporting charcters . I enjoy the antique aspect of this series that is done with authenticity. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. The cover art for this series is outstanding and I love how the author included many clues on each cover.
Avery is our protagnist and resident antique expert who owns a popular antique Appraisal Company. She has been invited to catalog the antiques and do appraisals at a local castle with a reputation for beautiful antiques. When she is there a death occurs as well as other mysterious occurrences. Avery is on the case amid a strange group of suspects and clues.
I loved this next in series. The author builds the sleuth with surprising twists and turns. The series is enjoyable to conclusion . I look forward to the next in series.
Really needed the respite of family and romantic entanglements to act as a breather between the investigation and danger! Come for the mystery (which is really well done!) but stay for the education into high end antiques appraisals and lessons in gemology and more (like polo). The due diligence is not only about solving the murder with the many suspects, but also about the theft of very valuable antiques with solid provenances that were illegally sold to esteemed museums across the US. The publisher's blurb is a good start, but most of the things that might put a reader off really are explained in this story. It really can stand alone. I loved it! I requested and received a free ebook copy from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
I am so sad that I finished this book. I have loved the world of Avery Ayers. I hadn’t read a mystery from my childhood of reading every Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys until I read Ruby Red Herring and Peril at Pennington Manor. I’m hoping Tracy has more adventures for Avery and Art in the future. This is an amazing book with so many twists and turns. Tracy is so very good at character development, and I found myself loving some of the characters and really disliking others. I read a lot, and these are among the best books I’ve read.
I loved the first book in this series and to be honest, I was afraid that was a one-off [as is the case with many of the new series I have started in the past few years], but I am here to tell you that it was as good, if not better than book one [I read this in two days, only stopping because I needed to sleep]. WHOOSH what a ride.
Much like book one, this one is best going in blind. I knew almost nothing about this book when I requested it and I am glad I didn't go searching for plot lines as this was really great to read and discover things as the characters did. And these are some GREAT characters. I love Avery and how she handles life [there are some scenes that are right out of real life and how she handles what happens is so true-to-life and shows her maturity and grace] and the supporting characters are just perfect.
The mystery is good and compelling and puzzling. My only complaint is that there were a ton of characters and I tended to forget who people were and I wish I had kept a list of characters when they appeared in the book [something I recommend to future readers], but this is so very minor. The reveal was good and a bit edge-of-your-seat and there were moments I really wondered where we were going to end up at the end. I didn't know the killer [though in a rare turn of events, I knew the why from almost the beginning, which should have clued me in to the who, but I was totally oblivious. HOW glorious] and I love when that happens - it really makes the book.
I highly recommend this series - the writing is amazing, the mystery is very good and it leaves you wanting the next book ASAP.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tracy Gardner, and Crooked Lane Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The characters were likeable and in some cases a bit quirky. The plot wasn’t very involved but the story was interesting and moved along. It is a light summer read with enough mystery to keep, the readers attention.
I found the mix of an American background set on the Hudson river, aristocrats (unusual for America) and antique business people with a penchant for mysteries all put together in an intriguing story.
The aristocrats are finally selling this manor (the one on the Hudson river) and they want all their antiques appraised and valued for sale. To their dismay Avery and her associates discover right at the beginning firstly that most of the more valuable pieces are fakes, and secondly that some are totally missing. Added to that when the housekeeper is murdered, followed by another murder, and the story gets out about the previous housekeeper also being murdered and the story not widely known and hushed up, Avery knows that trouble is afoot.
The story with the backdrop of antiques and the procedures that one followed in appraising them is a good one. It added a depth and flavor to the story of murder and mystery and history of this particular family.
This was a well-paced, fascinating mystery which taught me a lot about antiques and authenticity. Avery’s “short” 12-mile runs in book 1 now make sense since she’s training for a marathon. I loved the setting of the manor house with its priceless antiques and secret passages. I also enjoyed getting to know Avery’s sister, Tilly. Bonus points for the detective saving all the kitties!
I received a copy from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another fun installment in the Avery Ames mystery series. This was a good mystery that kept me guessing. I also liked the secondary storyline with Avery's sister Tilly. Good read!
I was given a free e-copy of this novel by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. (Goodreads synopsis) I have not read anything by Tracy Gardner prior to this. I started out very confused. The opening introduction to Art made it clear that this is not a standalone novel. There were, also, some references to another person and their crime, which wasn’t mentioned, so that was hard to understand as well. I wish there had been a brief “here’s what happened”. I think it would have cleared up why Avery reacted the way she did in the antiquities office. From what I can gather Avery had to raise her younger sister for a short time, but that doesn’t seem to change how Tilly reacts to her. There is an interesting relationship between them. Almost as if Tilly is trying to put Avery back in that sister position, but Avery is still focused in the parental idea. I would have liked more of an interaction with Avery, Tilly, and the rest of their family about how they should all be adjusting now. With that said, I liked Avery’s mindset, and how she handles her temper. I didn’t feel she necessarily put herself in danger, and how she purposely thought through her actions and the possible consequences. The mystery kept me guessing the whole way. I wasn’t really expecting the perpetrator until, maybe, the last 4 chapters. Avery doesn’t really have a lot of interaction with the suspects. Instead Avery and the reader seem to grab most of the information from the Detectives on the case or from outside sources. So I thought that was really unique to this character. I had the same idea as Avery when it came to the imitations. Overall I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars. I will follow this author and read the first of the series, so that I am better prepared for the next in this series. Hopefully, there will be another in the series.
“Peril at Pennington Manor" is the 2nd instalment in the Avery Ayers Antique Mystery series by Tracy Gardner. I believe this is the first book I have read by her, and it can easily be read as a standalone but I recommend reading in order. I have since purchased book one in the series.
I really liked the setting of Lilac Grove in rural New York, and the manor house on the Hudson River. The main characters are likable, interesting and realistic for the most part. Avery is an independent, strong woman who has been dealt some hardships with the loss of her mother. I’m looking forward to learning more about all the family dynamics (will be reading book one) and seeing what happens in Avery’s love life. I also liked the addition of some cute kittens .
The mystery was interesting and well plotted, with enough twists to keep me interested. I kept guessing and second-guessing myself on whodunnit right to the very end. I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoy this series about antique appraisers. I enjoy learning about the process of authenticating objects which leads to a murder mystery. Using the antiques to help solve the mystery adds to the interest.
The characters are very real with their strengths and flaws. I’m enjoying getting to know them.
I certainly hope there will be more books in this enjoyable series.
I listened to the audiobook and the narration helped bring the story to life.
I will post this review to Goodreads today (11/17) and to Instagram and Amazon on 6/7/22
This second installment in the Avery Ayers’ Antique Mystery series is set at Pennington Manor. This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine and I am already looking forward to the next in the series.
Avery’s Aunt Midge is friends with the Duke of Valle Charme and through this friendship, Avery and the team have been hired to appraise the various antiques and artwork in the manor.
While there to begin the appraisal process, the housekeeper meets her untimely death, thus leaving everyone feeling as thought they could be in danger. With the help of Detective Art Smith. Avery and the team continues the process while sneakily investigating the death of the housekeeper.
This installment seemed to be a bit faster paced than the first in the series. I highly recommend reading the first, Ruby Red Herring first so that some of the finer details make even more sense. The information giving in the first novel helps this one be even better.
I love how in addition to the mystery, we get to catch up with the Ayers family and what is going on in their personal lives.
Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Tracy Gardiner for the copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are entirely my own.
