I think this is a cute book to introduce young readers to the idea of mammals vs fish in the ocean. It describes much about the life cycle of whales and how they need to breathe air from above the water unlike fish. The illustrations are nice. I did have some lingering questions about the anatomy of these whales. I can't recall ever having seen a whale's nipples and I can't see how the giant mouth on those calves is able to suck on the teat. I googled it and now know a little too much about whale anatomy. :)

Old. Pretty boring. But I like having a nonfiction connection to a fiction story about whales.

Up from 2.5 stars. Factual information, decent illustrations, but nothing outstanding.

I think this is one of my new favorite books. I mean, we all know whales are mammals and therefore they must nurse their young, but how many books actually talk about it. And how does a baleen whale nurse? Well, this book talks about it. It also has other really great information about whales, mostly humpback whales.

This is a very easy book to read though the concepts and information are packed into the pages. The pictures are interesting and the words are understandable! I loved reading about baby whales and their journey into adulthood; I definitely recommend this book!

Reading Rainbow: The Milk Makers

We've read this one since Bea was a toddler. Too simple for her now - but still an excellent book as are most in this series.
