Shifter Queen #1

Soul of the Pack

Rate this book
ALONE. POWERLESS. HUMAN.

Tendira is a world of beastly shifters and deadly animals… except me.

The Human Queen.

When my home is taken over by an angry pack who wants me dead, I'm forced to run, so I go to the one place my attackers won't dare follow:

The Blood Lands.

But the Blood Alpha watches his territory more closely than I imagined. His people catch me, and drag me to their pack's capitol. And instead of killing me, they decide to keep me.

The problem?

They have no idea who I am.

So now if I want to stay alive, I have to make the most ruthless pack in Tendira believe I'm one of them.

That plan goes surprisingly well... until the Alpha decides he wants me as his mate.

Then I'm a human pretending to be a shifter, a queen pretending to be powerless, and a woman pretending not to fall in love with the deadliest shifter that's ever existed.

I'll die if I go back to my castle, but if the Blood Pack discovers my lies, I'll suffer a fate far worse than death.

And with my survival on the line, I can't afford to lose anything to the Blood Alpha…

Especially my heart.

Woah this book was good. It's been a while since I read a good shifter book and let me tell you I could not put this book down.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series especially after that last chapter.

Do not let the cover fool you! This is a great read!

World build is unlike any I have read in a long time. Which is super unique cause this heifer has been reading PNR for looooooong time. I would not say the world is easy to follow, so you got to be engaged to understand all the layers to this read.

Mesa is SUCH an interesting FMC. A barrier is blocking her magic for 6 months. Mesa has to survive within the wall of the Blood Pack with ZERO magic. This little human is super smart, crafty, and about to burst with unknow power....leading to her becoming the Shifter Queen.

Tuslan dear lawd help me is sexy, dominating, thoughtful, loving, funny ..... I mean I could go on and on. Tuslan makes it clear when they first meet that he does not give second chances, which leads to Mesa believing her necessary lies (regarding who/what she is) will be their end. IS SHE RIGHT???!!!

LOVED the secondary characters! It has been a minute since I have completely enjoyed this aspect of a read. So refreshing to feel a complete connection to a book again!

Such a great storyline and characters!!

Can not grab book 2 quick enough!!

Happy reading,
DD🥂

4.5 - I really enjoyed Soul of the Pack, the beginning of Lola Glass's new Shifter Queen Series. This is now my favorite book from Lola Glass.

I loved the characters and found the land, packs, and society to be interesting. Tendira, a land of shifters, has varied traditions, magics and (a few messed up) dynamics within the lands, as each group/pack values different things, their different loyalties to the Royal Queen and the Soul of Tendira. Additionally, the diverse power structure, shifter types, and the number of forms an individual can have vs. the way relationships, touch, and intimacy is handled was very different from anything I have read before.

I loved Mesa's spirit and compassion, and I adored Tuslan, the feared Blood Alpha, and his pack leads immensely. I loved the way Tuslan gave Mesa what she needed without taking away her own power and met each challenge with heart, not anger.

I hope we get more information and background on the Human Queen/Shifter Queen magic, power structure, and the mating mark of the Lalidro. As well as the trade within the Human lands.

❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇❇

I would like to thank Lola Glass for sending me a complementary digital copy of the ARC of Soul of the Pack in exchange for my honest review.

I was completely unprepared when I picked up this book, not expecting much, but it totally blew me away! It was even better than I could have imagined. I was literally kicking my feet in excitement! It's been a while since I've been so engrossed in a book. It stressed me out in the best possible way, and the ending was so unbelievably good that it left my jaw on the floor. I immediately bought the next two books 😂 I'm officially a huge fan of this author, and I can't wait to dive into more of her work!

This book had a very unique world set up. It was complex, but the author doled out a piece at a time, which helped with the overall understanding of how the world system worked. I'm still confused about some things like ... Why did she have to keep her identity secret in the first place. I mean, I understand she was fearful for her life, but it got to the point that it didn't make sense for her to continue the secret. I don't know if I'll continue on or not ... The ending was intriguing, but I can't seem to garner any enthusiasm for the next book.

disappointed

So much potential wasted. The pen of the author is indecisive.
She goes in circles over the same conflicts. It’s repetitive and redundant.
Too long and too little, it’s said.
There is talent in her prose, without any doubt, but she denies the story's climax repeatedly.

DNF @ 80% 🫠

The only thing that has actually ‘developed’ is the status of Mesa & Tuslan’s relationship. And even then it’s still a weak development. Everything else is still the same. And I’m 80% done. If I wasn’t clear, I AM 3/4 OF THE WAY DONE AND EVERYTHING’S PRETTY MUCH STILL THE SAME! The heck!! This book’s going in my DDNF (Definitely Did Not Finish) pile. It’s my special pile for books I started out hopeful with but now basically loathe.

Mesa’s character is now annoying to read because it’s still the same pile of what ifs since PAGE mf ONE. Anywho, laters. I’m so sad this book didn’t reach the promise this whole premise held. I think I might just do another re-read of a fave so I can forget about this struggle.

NOTE: Author’s writing is good! 👍🏼 It is just the way Mesa’s character’s mapped out. I’d gladly pick up another one of hers if the MC’s nothing like this one (Mesa). Give me a book with a decisive kickass of a heroine.

This book didn’t need sex to be spicy as HEKK and make me flip through the pages like my life depended on it. I had so much fun, I’m incredibly invested in Mesa and Tuslan, and I’m starting the 2nd book ASAP. 🔥

For one the FMC is not a poor little thing that needs saving. She is intelligent and stays that way even when faced with a attractive man…. She is not obsessed by sex or leaves all her plan when she starts falling for him.

And the MC is not an asshole and a player.

Well… That was refreshing and fun.

The story is interesting.

Soul of the Pack is one of those books that you read until the early hours of the morning because there's never a good place to put it down. It's an action-packed shifter romance (moderate-burn), with lots of interesting characters. Honestly, the "Blood Alpha" was a bit of a cutie and I adored the scenes between him and Mesa. Mesa's internal dialogue was a bit repetitive at times, which got a bit boring (-0.5 stars), but otherwise was a likeable and strong heroine.

The book ends on a cliff hanger - so I'm super excited to binge the rest of the series this week!! Would defs recommend.

1st person POV - Mesa

Okay I LOVED this! I was pretty confused about the magic system surrounding the Shifter Queen and the Human Queen but eventually I was able to put the pieces together... for the most part. The banter between not only the MCs but the side characters made this a super enjoyable and bingeable book. I loved how obsessed Tuslan is with Mesa from pretty much the get go. His pursuit of her was so romantic and as she started to accept his courting, he became more and more vocal about how adamant and sure he was that she was going to be his mate, despite knowing nothing about her background.

Their talks of boundaries and consent made for some of the healthiest communication that I've seen in a book despite the fact that she was in hiding/lying to him for the entirety of this first book. Tuslan is so considerate and tries to anticipate her needs and actually gets mad at himself when he feels like he's failed her (not gotten her food quick enough, not kept her warm enough, etc.). It's quite endearing and cute to see such an important man absolutely fold for his woman. Not much in terms of spice but the tension and chemistry is there so I'm sure in the following books we'll see some more. Heading straight into book 2 now!!

A beautiful story with a strong human queen. I've read and enjoyed some other works by this author, but here I was blown away by the world building and characters. I love Mesa, and how fast she forms some friendships, even knowing it can't last. I really enjoyed how the destined mates trope played out here- he gave her SO much space to just exist and get to know him and the pack without any pressure. The ending was perfection, I need to find out what happens next.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

once again, i find myself reminded why ms. lola glass continues to be one of my all-time favorite authors. not only does she create some of the most fun, immersive worlds i’ve ever read about, but she always manages to write such wonderfully authentic characters. characters that somehow always embody just the right balance of strength, power & vulnerability w/o feeling like you’re reading about the same character over and over again. it’s truly impressive.

in this story, we have mesa, someone who was honestly just an utter delight to read about. i really connected to how much she embraced being the only human in a world full of shifters, while also acknowledging her desire to for more. more power, more freedom, more of life. it was seriously well done. then we have tuslan, our a m a z i n g love interest. he was someone who was so powerful, vicious and ruthless, but he was also someone who was 1000% completely taken by mesa. his obsession with her was nothing short of adorable, and i loved that he was never deterred by mesa’s constant rejections (and by constant i mean DAILY). he was so entirely devoted to her, and i particularly appreciated that tho mesa always tried to keep him at arm’s length, she still knew that he would always come for her. this shit had me giggling, rolling on the bed, and kicking my feet in the air like a goddamn teenager!! 🙈

literally all of the side characters were also so interesting that i actually found myself almost as invested in their own storylines as i was with mesa & tuslan’s. i’m genuinely curious to see who will pair up with who, if they do at all! the friendships in this book definitely made for a good portion of why i liked it so much, and i feel like this is just another prime example of how talented LG actually is. i seriously canNOT wait to jump right into the next book & get into the desedra trials!! i just know tuslan’s gonna give us a good show 😉

Ummm... So this book has me pulling my hair because it felt like the author was dragging parts of it on purpose to drive the readers nuts. So far, I'm not a fan of the main female character just for the simple fact that she lies for the majority of the book and she's been asked several times, who she is and where she's from. I get keeping the secret at first but after a while you could clearly see that the blood pack, or at least the alpha's inner circle are trustworthy as well as protective over her. If she had let them in on the secrets she kept, I feel that so much more could have been uncovered and more of the relationship with Tuslan could've been built. It felt like the story was going around and around in circles and getting nowhere at the same time. This book is a slow burn and continues over multiple books. Only problem is there's no spicy moments, just mildly heated ones and there's no real action which makes the book seem longer than it is. I do like the concept of the story and that some of the shifters have more than one form that they can shift to. I also like the mystery that someone has betrayed Mesa and the royal pack and we still don't know who. But are those two things worth sitting through two or three more books... 🤔🤔🤔 Yeah, no. Somebody give me the cliffs notes because I need this series summarized.

Really good

So good! I really loved this read. I loved the storyline, the world building, the characters! Everything here was done nicely and I just couldn't put the book down from start to finish. At first I thought mesa was holding on to her secret a tad bit to much, but as the story progresses you really get the understanding its more then her safty. Its about self preservation, its about not letting these ppl who actually need her know that they are literally screwed without her. That she's important! And she won't let herself end up like all the queens before her. I loved that! It was refreshing to watch that shift within her. I loved the blood alpha, sexy, romantic, thoughtful, and violently protective. He's everything I love in a leading man. The drama is all over this book, and not just with our H hiding. The only thing I will confess that I'm confused about was how a queen is chosen? It was stated that her parent left her with the queen? And she does say that she hopes to find the next queen and that she's safe with her mother. Then I read about the shifter queen having a child and they are the next shifter queen? I'm confused and wondering if I read that wrong?

:(. 90% of the plot is the romance, and any actual plot starts at around 70% into the book. But since the MMC falls in love with the FMC in, like, the the second time they meet, the entire plot is the FMC slowly falling in love with the MMC… which is sweet, but honestly quite boring (since, again, it’s the entire plot). The characters and the world also honestly feel kind of lacking in depth, too, even though the lore itself is mildly interesting. The writing itself is also fine. The FMC is also kind of annoying because she constantly repeats the same “what ifs”and problems she has over and over again.

This ends on an interesting cliffhanger, and if this book were more fun to read I might’ve actually wanted to continue, but… the plot itself is kind of boring, and the romance feels like it’ll resolve quickly, especially since he’s a rational guy and is probably going to be in love with her again very quickly. 1.5 stars.

A leviathan, pheonix, wolf, dragon, and human walk into a bar.......

No actually not a bar but a beach. The shifter lore in this book was really cool. Not something I had ever read before and I really enjoyed it. Mesa is a different type of main character. I wasn't sure if I was going to like her but I really do and I love her growth and realization if her self worth in this first book. And Tuslin.... we don't know much about him yet but he is interesting and I am excited to see how his and Mesa's story progresses. There is an epilogue link at the end of the book and it is from Tuslin's POV and that kind of was thr icing in the very good cake to me.
These books are scheduled for the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th releases all within this month and December. For those that like to wait for multiple book release you won't have long. Pick this up. It's worth it.

As much as I love Lola Glass's contemporary/urban fantasy, her second world fantasy is always the greatest. This book was no exception, and has won my top spot for favorite Lola book!! I could not put it down. The world building was really cool. I liked the concept of all the different packs and how shifters work in this world. All shifters have a wolf form, and most have even more. And then there's the two queens- the human queen and shifter queen. The magic was really interesting too.
The best part is of course the characters. Mesa is the human queen forced into hiding when a rogue pack attacks, killing the shifter queen. Now she's on the run and hiding, but found by the fearsome Blood Pack. The rumors of the blood pack paint them as a ruthless group lead by an even more terrifying alpha. But what Mesa finds isn't the cutthroat, blood-soaked land she expected. She's taken care of and even starts to make friends, all while trying to keep her true identity secret. But she catches the blood alpha's eye. Trying to protect her identity and play the part of a shifter being magically punished while also trying not to fall in love with the deadliest shifter in history...
I loved Tuslan too. I liked that he wasn't the jerk rumors made him out to be. He protects his pack and isn't afraid to dole out justice when needed, but he cares for his people and wants to keep them safe. And I loved seeing him and Mesa grow together. It's not as romance heavy as some of her other books, but it's there. And it's a lot of building up to more in the next book. I liked that it's not insta-love or love just because of the magical connection. Mesa still has autonomy and a voice.
I really loved the other Blood Pack characters and Mesa's growing friendships with them. I definitely hope we see more of them in the coming books.
So much happened at the end of the book, and I'm so excited to read the next one!! I can't recommend this book enough! If you like shifters, unique magic, great world building, and fresh takes on tropes like fated mates, you'll love this one!!!

When soon to be Shifter Queen Mesa Royal runs from her home after an attack on her life, she hides in the dreaded Blood pack, lead by the terrifying Alpha Tuslan, in this fantasy romance series.

I read the trilogy back-to-back so I figured I would write a review about the entire series rather than each individual book. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first two books of the series. Mesa and Tuslan had tons of chemistry, and the circumstances surrounding Mesa's arrival in the Blood kingdom create a perfect amount of tension and secrecy between the two. The second installment of the series continues to build their romance as Mesa's lies unravel in the face of her true identity. While their romance and character development starts strong, it fizzles out in the third book. Their characters both become too powerful and too perfect to create any sort of tension.

If found family is your thing, you might love this series. The Blood Pack members all play a part in creating a fun, found family vibe. In particular, I enjoyed the comradery the girls found with each other. It's always nice to see ladies supporting ladies in these stories. However, the last book introduces some new characters that, quite frankly, never needed to be in the story as they were only used as plot devices.

Probably the biggest let down is the magic system. The first two books were able to gloss over the world building issues, but the last installment requires a certain amount of understanding of the magic system to be interesting or understandable. The worldbuilding was murky at best, particularly the nuances of the magic system and the legend behind the Human Queens. While the ending may have been a let down, I enjoyed most of my time reading this series.
