Sex Wizards #1

Initiation

Rate this book
Magic is a rare gift that only exists in the bloodlines of the rich, the royal, and the reputable. Dominai of Airedale, a poor hunter and forest guide, is barely one of those things. But after a moonlit encounter with the wizard Allisande, Dominai's life is changed forever. She reveals that Dominai has magic in his lineage and provides him with a letter of introduction to the Crux, the center of magical study in the Kingdom of Straetham.

Magical study is a far cry from the dusty tomes and rituals Dom was expecting. Instead, it is sex and desire, submission and surrender, loyalty and love, and, above all, trust. But when the trust of the Crux is betrayed, Dom must face his own insecurities and the unknown to protect his new home and his fellow wizards.

Alethea Faust’s debut novel delivers risk-aware consensual kink, hard BDSM, budding relationships between kind, emotionally mature adults, and a lot of butt stuff.

Initiation is a full-length fantasy, the first in the epic Sex Wizards series set in a sex-positive, magical world. This novel has a kink-based magic system which crosses a wide range of play with varying degrees of intensity. The wizards of the Crux include pansexual, polyamorous, fantasy race, nonbinary, gender non-conforming and intersex characters. Please see book preview for full CW.

Umm I have no excuse other than I saw this book in a tik tok, I have a kindle unlimited free trial, and my curiosity got the best of me 🙈

The plot had no business being as interesting as it was. I was thoroughly entertained

If BDSM and high fantasy pique your interest at all, you are *absolutely* doing yourself a disservice if this isn't the next book on your TBR list.

When I say this is an exceptional book, it's not hyperbole - it's arguably my new favorite, and with more than 300 titles on my shelf this year, that's saying something. Initiation is an extremely engaging fantasy story with an absolutely fascinating magic system built on "schools" of kink practices. It somehow manages to mix heat and tenderness in equal measure, and really explores relationships, character motivations, and authenticity in connections while still being an insanely hot read.

Excellent representation and respectful treatment of a non-binary character, bi/pansexual relationships, racial tensions (orc-vs-human here, but the allegory's not hard to spot) and the hottest continual consent discussions I've ever seen on page.

I'm probably making this lovely piece of work sound a lot drier than it is - it's also really, really spicy, believe me. Sex drives the plot, and the magic, in this book, so it's a beautiful central theme that doesn't feel cheap, tawdry, or sex-for-the-sake-of-it the way some titles do.

I am leaving this review for the benefit of potential readers, so spoilers follow for context. I was interested to try this book because the originality of the magic system really appealed to me. I thought it was very clever and sensitive of the author to include content warnings at the beginning of each chapter, framed as what the type of magic would involve. I think a reader could skip any chapters they are not comfortable with, and still follow the plotline and enjoy the story. I was so happy to see a book like this feature incredible diversity of sexualities, including polysexuality, pansexuality, and far more. Reading the reviews, I was enthusiastic at the prospect of this kind of book emphasisng the importance of consent and care, so I was all set to give it a go with a positive outlook and open mind. I'm full of praise for the author for these aspects of the story, and I would encourage general readers to give it a go. But for some readers, the rest of my review may also be helpful to bear in mind before deciding if this is something you feel ready to try reading.

My first concern is with how consent is depicted in the book. The main character, Dom, is a complete novice to BDSM. While he makes the point he'll try anything twice, and the other characters are impressed at his openness, I found myself losing patience with the intention behind the emphasis on consent and boundaries, when the book never allowed Dom opportunities to use the safe word or not be 'alright' with everything, all the time. Personally I believe safe, sane and consensual should be the bare minimum of stories including BDSM (although obviously this isn't how it often goes down in fiction, sadly), and I was hoping for something more here. Perhaps it's a case of high expectations leading to disappointment. I would have loved to have seen how the characters handled Dom saying 'stop' even once, saying he wasn't alright. I think that would have been far more groundbreaking than him always being fine with everything. It often felt to me like Dom was meant to be a 'Gary Stu' avatar for the reader, so they could experience numerous varied BDSM scenes through his eyes, and know he was 'always alright'. Especially because in some scenes Dom goes right up to the edge of his tolerance, sometimes I felt as though I was meant to be experiencing enjoyment at his 'not quite alright' state, yet he was never given the chance to use the safe word or be cared for by the other characters. I understand this is perhaps my personal preferences impacting my enjoyment, but to me part of the Dom/sub dynamic is that the sub trusts the Dom enough to stop and care for them when they need care, and it's not only a matter of cheap words but also affirming actions.

My major issue, though, is that none of the reviews I read picked up on how rape is used as a plot device. This aspect of the book is what brought my rating down so low. Part of the plot involves wizards going missing, and in one scene, Dom sees a wizard he knows being mistreated while imprisoned. Another wizard goes through a scene and sees her friend being raped while she is in that headspace. Her reaction is to immediately send Dom into that headspace and have sex with him and another wizard, before anything else is done in reference to the friend she saw being raped. Literally this happens one paragraph after another. The only reference point is that she's upset having seen her friend being raped, and then there's a moment when Dom feels bad and worried about what the wizards are experiencing in prison. Once rescued, these characters are not referred to again, except a few references to the fact that the MC feels pity for how they've suffered; some of them get nightmares or seem traumatised; and mostly they are treated differently by the other unnamed characters - except for one, who seems relieved not to be treated like glass. Because of course the only rape victims worth representing are those who readily throw themselves back into sex straight away with no lasting harm.

I think the reason I'm so disappointed by this depiction is because there are many nuanced positions in BDSM for trauma survivors, and if you're going to include a plotline about survivors of rape in a story about BDSM, I'm going to have high expectations about the sensitivity in which it is handled. Even the briefest engagement with the character's motivations or emotions would have been enough for me. It would have been enough for her to say 'I'm upset having seen this, and I need to be dominant or top to get through what I've just witnessed'. It's OK that she responded by going straight to sex, especially considering the magical worldbuilding and the fact that they're wizards who want to save their friends with their sex magic. But by the book saying nothing about it and not explaining anything about her motivations, what came across to me as a reader is that watching a friend being raped is not worth anything at all to the narrative or emotional journey of the characters - it's simply there for drama and shock value. This was only confirmed with the comment towards the end about how the survivors (because of course they are one entity, and no one is given any time to express their pain or how to explore their recovery) don't want to be seen as broken or treated differently by everyone around them. Again, because no time is given to their story, their suffering feels utterly brushed under the rug, which - linking back to the connections between trauma survivors and BDSM - honestly did feel hurtful to read. Responses to rape aren't about 'emotional maturity', and I have to say I'm disappointed by how this aspect of the storyline was handled (read: ignored).

To confirm: I could have loved this book, and I was ready to do so. But the way the rape storyline was handled was incredibly disappointing, and since no other reviewers seem to have picked up on it yet, I wanted to take the time to deep dive, so anyone else who might be impacted by this is forewarned.

I'M BACK TO WRITE SOME WORDS. 🙏🙏🙏

I only had to process for 6 months, but I have indeed processed.

THIS BOOK WAS HORNY AF MY DUDES
The MF, MM AND COMBINATIONS OF ALL THE M&F's... all worked...?
A magic system built around fucking and 💦💦💦?? YES PLEASE.

This is the perfect book to read if you've ever thought.... "that's an interesting kink, am I into it? Let's find out.."

Each chapter starts with the kinks listed, so as a reader you can skip if necessary. (which I love as I hear book 2 has golden showers, and I am not into that, so that'll be a skippidy doo from me)

But honestly, I went into this for horny, and the horny gods provided. 🙏

Old review: It’s called sex wizards because it’s literally about sex wizards, I don’t know what else to say??? I don’t know how to rate this or how to feel??? Ahhahahaha 😂 I’ll process and come back to ya

Fun and spicy read perfect for anyone who is not afraid to explore their kinkier side.

I have to warn immediately, this book may not be for everyone. The content may be too explicit for some people. Good thing then, each chapter has their own individual trigger warnings (something I personally would have preferred at the beginning of the book as I don't pay attention to them and at the beginning of every chapter, I see them even when I try not to and it spoils the story for me).

Dominai is absolutely hilarious and delightful in his witty banter. I have to admit, I love him as a main character and can't wait for the next book. The whole magic system with regards to a particular kink, I have to admit that I love the idea. I had fun learning about this world and the way the magic works in it.

Alethea manages to find something new in every chapter and avoids repetitions (one of my personal horrors when it comes to this genre). Alethea never seems to run out of ideas and adventures to write for us. In addition to that, we do get to know all of the characters more as the story evolves, and in doing so, we can relate more to them.

What's more fun than going on adventures and vanquishing evil foes with magic made from smushing each other's private parts? Alethea, I think you're on to something and I cannot wait to find out what more Sex Wizards bring to us.

DNF @ 18% aka almost 2 hours into the audiobook.

don't get me wrong Blake Lockheart was killing the narration, but the story itself i don't think is my cup of tea... Its a wizarding school that to get a spell you do some sort of BDSM play to charge the 'focuses' and then you have sex then bam focus is all charged and ready to use as a spell, haha i got about 3 focuses in and i can tell i am not going to love this story.

this had an MF, MM and looks to be another MF sexy time all with Dominai aka Dom, (the wizard in training) learning from the teachers/masters of the different BDSM crafts..

it had potential, but idk i didn't connect with any of the characters i do think that Olbric was my fave of the characters we met so far, but i just couldn't care about the main character to continue.

i am bummed because who wouldn't want to read about sex wizards?! haha but sadly, i apparently don't want to read about sex wizards haha.

This book. This gods damn book.

I’ve been searching for a while for a story that has informative BDSM scenes, safe kinks and a genuine good plot, and this book skyrocketed those marks for me.

Initiation had the perfect blend of mixing fantasy elements & very intense, well written sex scenes, with a really unique magic based system. I was entirely invested in all the characters and how they related to the story, as well as our main character, and although I really loved the erotica, I was also so intrigued and curious of the plot that dabbled throughout the book.

Faust portrayed such a glorious depiction of consensual BDSM, embodying RACK/SSC. It’s kinky, it’s hot as fuck and it left me feeling proud, in a very odd and weird way. It felt good reading a story based on kink and relationships in such an explanatory way where it’s positive representation.

As well as the positive kink rep, the book is full of diversity and made me extremely happy while reading.

I’m honestly just gushing over how much I loved this book. It was definitely a book I needed and I can’t wait for the second instalment.

You’ve gotta give me more than just a kink-based magic system.

Who is the main character? Aside from being very open minded to getting his rocks off, what does he want and why? This is very basic stuff, and if I can’t answer any of these questions, I’m not going to care enough to continue.

Initiation is the first book in Alethea Faust’s new and excited Sex Wizards series. Can you guess what this series is about? That’s right: wizards who fuck. But with its lovable characters, intriguing plot, and amazingly detailed spellcasting system, it's also so much more than that.

Our main character is Dominai - Dom for short - and when it comes to magic, he’s a total newcomer. In fact, it takes him almost a year after having his magical potential sensed by a wizard he met on the road that he decided to finally give training a try. He ventures to the Crux, a place many wizards go to train their skills. It is a fortress with a series of tall towers that is essentially half-magical school, and half-sex dungeon.

The magical system Alethea has designed is just an unbelievable amount of fun. In order to cast spells, spellcasters in this world engage in various kink/BDSM play, with different types of play being tied to each traditional “school” of magic. Evocation requires impact play, abjuration needs bondage, and conjuration calls for chastity, just to give you an idea. The kinks in the book run a wide gamut, from common spanking to more extreme things like needle play. I would not by any means say there was an excessive amount, nor was it difficult to read, but if those things on the darker end squick you you may want to skip those parts.

If you are new to some of these kinks, don’t worry, because so is Dom. It’s all new to him, and we are in for a fun ride as he is gently taken through each of his first “castings.” For most of the book we see him in the submissive role during kink play, which he seems to have a natural talent for. There are moments of Dom being a dom (heh), which were equally enjoyable, and there were many hints that there was more of this to come in the future of the series.

Dom’s instructors through his magical curriculum are other wizards of the Crux. We have Olberic an evoclation master and the Crux’s resident pain slut, Galvia the kind yet exacting abjuration master, Cancassi, an intersex elf who is an expert in training and taming ponies (yeah, that kind), and so many more. There’s even a sexy orc named Garrett that Dom has to eventually contend with. In addition to their own personalities and quirks, seeing the ways the characters' dynamics all differ between them is fascinating.

Now, you all know I pretty much only read male/male stories (sorry straight people, but I get enough fo your romance literally everywhere), but Dom and just about everyone else appears to be either bi or pansexual. That means in addition to some wonderful man-on-man sex scenes, we also ahve many scenes in which Dom is fucking women, and as mentioend above, an intersex character. I will note that the main “pairing”' that gave off romantic vibes with Dom was with another male, but I could also see the story taking a polyamrous turn with some of the other characters in future books.

I don’t know how else to say it but this is honestly one of my new favorite books. As a writer of my own kinky queer erotica series, I really connected with it. I had so much fun reading this story, and the magical system Althea has defined is all at once hilarious, sexy, and incredibly fleshed out. And it all makes actual logical sense when you sit down and think about it. These characters were so much fun to follow, and as the plot develops you learn pretty quickly that there is more to the story than just wizards tying up. I know a sequel is in the works and I am thankful for that, because I am really eager to continue this series.

I often blame my reading choices on #spicybooktok.
But this one... I just desperately want to thank them for.

Perhaps it's because I've been reading a lot of books where everyone's an asshole, and that's supposed to make them so dark and broody and mysterious (there's a reason I'm a Spuffy fan from way back). But this was a totally surprising breath of fresh air.

The characters are individual, nuanced, and KIND. They're invested in the wellbeing of others. WHY DOES THIS FEEL SO REVELATORY? Faust (amazing pen name, btw) creates this incredible dynamic between these kinky wizards that is fundamentally undergirded by consent and care. It's a really wonderful depiction of what BDSM looks like when the trifecta of "safe, sane, and consensual" is followed.

It's also queer as hell, which I am HERE FOR.

Yeah, there is a lot of kinky fuckery going on here, but it privileges care and consent and it feels like the antidote to so much bad writing out there. Because yes--it's written beautifully. The world comes alive through the prose, and the plot was far more interesting than I would have dared to hope. It's often laugh-out-loud funny. And by the end of the book, I was openly weeping, because I was deeply invested in the protagonist's happiness.

So, yes, if you're up for some taboo-smashing, consensually-negotiated kink that features thoughtful and kind aftercare that's all in service to a pretty great story, then READ THIS NOW.

TL;DR: I came for the title, I stayed for the hot yet tender kink.

I cannot wait for Book 2.

Good fun!

It’s your standard country-boy-goes-to-wizard-school except they do all their magic via kinky sex. This is all explained and makes a weird sort of sense.

The characters are all great, there’s a plot and it’s cheerfully sex positive.

I really enjoyed how casual and light everyone is about all the sex, while insisting on consent.

There are trigger warnings here and there when the plot kicks in.

What got me to add this book to my TBR initially was a review which said that despite this being an off the charts smoldering smutfest is also had a lot of heart and phenomenal world building, and I honestly can't add anything to that. Like Dom, our protag, after reading this I am overwhelmed, overstimulated, and deeply satisfied.

(audiobook) This isn’t your usual magical school for sure. But the author builds a believable world–although an unusual one. There’s consistency, it’s surprisingly logical, and it all makes sense in the end.

It isn’t really romance, as Dominai isn’t in a relationship by the end of the book, though Olbric is a good candidate heavily hinted at. But as intimacy and kinks are used with a definite purpose–casting spells–they aren’t connected to deeper emotions. They all like each other, mostly, but it isn’t love that motivates them.

For the same reasons, there’s no straight or gay, nor Dom or sub, not even just two genders. For all intents and purposes, they’re all pansexual creatures. It allows the author to include in their world a really positive view of all inclinations. That was an interesting aspect. Especially if you add various species, and if the subject of prejudices isn’t glossed over.

Even though it’s an introduction to a new world, and the story revolves a lot around physical activities–if you know what I mean–there’s still a plot, and a violent one at that. Once Dominai has been accepted at the Crux, we learn that wizards from the school are hunted and in danger. The villain ticks lots of triggers, be aware that sensible topics can be found in this book.

The writing was just okay, but the author gets points for originality and consistency.

With only one point of view, one narrator was enough, and he does a great job keeping the listener interested. If you want to try something really new, it’s a good place to start.

Quickie

- Series: Sex wizards #1 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #fantasy romance #erotica #bisexual
- Triggers: mention of rape, multiple kinks
- Main couple: Dominai & “whoever wants it at the moment”
- Hotness: 5/5
- Romance: 3/5
- + interesting world building
- – though there’s plenty of heat, not sure if it qualifies as romance

I can't believe I'm saying this, but it has some great plot...

I mean, I'm even shocking myself a bit here, ladies and gentleman. But... there's enough plot in this book that I feel like some of you might like it.

📚 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Fantasy

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Dominai is a poor hunter, who gets a mysterious invitation to The Crux. He has magic in his blood line - and not only that, but it's powerful. As he learns his new powers, he is also faced with the fact that powerful wizards are going missing in the kingdom.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I'm just going to get right into it. Why beat around the bush? Let me tell you the dirty little details.

"Casting" spells basically means having sex. And your... uh...I. release creates the spell. And doing different things during your... uh sex... makes different types of spells. So you have the coitus, you get a magic sex bead for your wizard necklace, and you go about your day.

So you can see this is clearly erotica. It's also not for those of you who have (almost any) limits. The Crux is pansexual and pretty much a giant reverse harem, but even that sounds like too tame of a word because there's like 10 of them. There's men, women, beasts, and I swear on my life one time he's treated like a 🐎. I'm just giving you all of the facts here.

But here I am reading it as a joke, and I was actually super into the actual plot. I liked the characters, and thought Dom was a good person to lead the story through. I also appreciate that while the book was full of impct play and submission and roleplay, it was all written super well and responsibly. There's going to be more books that come after, but it didn't end on a cliffhanger

🔮 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲: Medium. If you've read HP, you'll get the world enough to move forward.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 5/5 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

Made Me Blush!

Edited to change the review from 4 stars to 5 because it's been over a year and this book is still on my mind! I've read several hundred books since this one but it's still the one my brain wants to think about the most.

Woah... woah. What are words? My heart rate has been dangerously high just the entire time I've been reading. I've been a high fantasy and magic fan all my life and I have never wanted to be a magic user more than right now. That was... something else.

If you're looking for something you've never read anything like and you love A LOT of spice then you should read this. Although the spice is a big part of the book the thought put into the magical process and the storyline fascinated me just as much and this is just a very well thought out and penned story. I just hope there's more.

3.5 stars. Well this was a book 🤣. A book about a lot of sex. But sex usually for a reason. The premise of the story was super cool and listening to the audiobook helped for sure for me to get through it (even if it was weird listening while I was at work)!

This is a single POV story told by Dominai who is new to the whole sex wizards thing so it was a great way of introducing the reader to the world and how the magic system works as well (loved how adding breath play to sex made the magic knock the breath out of the person the magic was used on). However, it made the story a bit boring sometimes even during a sex scene (note: sex scenes were between all kinds of pairings and numbers).

It does end on a cliffhanger but I’m not sure if I’ll continue at this point. If you’re looking for a fantasy with a cool magic system and just want to read about a bunch of sex then I definitely recommend!

I don't read a lot of erotica, and I was skeptical going into this one. I read books for the plot, and I really need to be attached to the characters to care about their sexytimes. I saw this book was short and was really worried it would not live up to all the hype about it on BookTok.

But let me tell you, I was SO WRONG.

I didn't expect to cry over a smut book. But I did. Either I'm getting hella soft, or this was just that good.

Like the ebook says, this is about a wizard school that uses a kink based magic system. Neat idea! I went in expecting that to be all there was and was pleasantly surprised by a well thought out plot, an exploration of the importance of consent, and romances that will make you go "Awwww" one minute and have you fanning yourself the next.

Even if you're not into erotica, I think this is a worthwhile read. This is such a wonderful, unapologetically queer book that it deserves all the hype and more.

I Can’t Believe I Read This, But Here We Are

Listen. I hesitated to even post about Sex Wizards because, well… look at the title. But dammit, I read it, and it counts. And you know what? It had absolutely no business being as plot-driven as it was.

Yes, there is a lot of sex. I mean, it’s literally called Sex Wizards—if you’re surprised, that’s on you. But what really got me was how actually engaging the story was. Between the wild (and mostly queer) magical sexcapades, there was an unexpected amount of world-building, character development, and dare I say… emotion?

The sex itself? Adventurous, creative, and weirdly educational (seriously, the range of kinks explored is impressive), but never overly graphic. It somehow managed to be fascinating without tipping into too much.

And guess what? There are more books in the series—and I am already onto book two. Let the adventures continue!!!

Wow. What an amazing story and world this author has created. I loved every minute of reading this book. The rep is fantastic, the consent is amazing, and the spice is HOT HOT HOT. The plot and worldbuilding had me riveted from page one. The mix of kinks, bdsm, and fantasy was perfection.

Very much looking forward to the next book.

I did not expect this to be so well though out.
The world building, the magical structures and the air of mystery added into what I thought would be a giggly smutty book?
Colour me surprised.
I find myself eagerly anticipating the continuation of this series.
Can't wait to get to know more in this world and the characters I got far too little time with.

Sex is magic. Intense sex creates strong magic. Menage sex creates potent sex. What a great concept for a porn-with-plot story. Every chapter has an extended scene with various amounts of BDSM and a range of partners, including one hermaphrodite! All variants of sexual activity, with a bit too much anal for me. Still lots of fun with solid characters.

This is the start of a long series, which I may explore later.

This book was a super fun read!
It's been on my TBR for so long, I am sad that I waited so long to read it. Harry Potter who??
Initiation is an exceptionally unique tale of wizards who use components of the B D S M Lifestyle to cast spells. I thought the author did a wonderful job using the potential triggers as spell-casting components. It gave the reader a direct heads up as to what they are about to dive into during that chapter.
I also enjoyed how fluid the characters are and how interwoven fantasy is throughout the story. Overall, I really loved it and can't wait to explore the rest of the series.

This was all smut and no plot, and while I don't mind that, this book is lacking in character development. You get a great diverse cast of fun and unique people and creatures, but you don't get past surface level with them.
